Longmont Community Foundation (LCF) improves life in the St. Vrain Valley though philanthropy and charitable leadership. “We’re a forever resource of funding to community organizations,” says Eric Hozempa, Executive Director. As a nonprofit organization created by and for the people of the Longmont and the St. Vrain Valley, the idea of the Longmont Community Foundation first came about in the
late ‘80s and was formalized in 1994. The organization serves three main functions: LCF is home to the Community Endowment – a “savings account” for the community that grows over time. It’s the investment earnings from the Community Endowment that fund small and large nonprofits each year. The grant deadline for the Community Endowment is the first Friday of each December. An experienced group of community volunteers reviews the grant applications and makes final recommendations each March. LCF manages charitable funds for families, individuals and non-profits—over 110 of them—in the Longmont community. They offer the power
and flexibility of establishing individual foundations without the legal paperwork, time and expense of running them. They can also help set up a donor directed fund that will maximize both tax advantages and a foundation’s impact in the community – now and forever. LCF advises non-profits and assists them in doing more with their resources. This includes offering technical assistance and coaching when requested. They offer free or reduced cost learning opportunities on board development, fundraising, and marketing. LCF is home to a giving circle called Longmont Legacy. Legacy is a group of individu-
als and families that pool their financial resources to make a larger cumulative impact in the community. To date, Legacy has provided $120,000 to organizations that are youth or education focused Recent Legacy grants include: Wild Plum Center for Young Children and Families, I Have a Dream Foundation of Boulder County, The Inn Between of Longmont, Inc., Atwood Emergency Shelter, and the Bright Eyes program. Longmont Community Foundation envisions a future where all people of the St. Vrain Valley lead independent, generous and creative lives.
The Longmont Community Foundation Creating a Donor Advised Fund is a great way to get your children involved in philanthropy, realize a charitable deduction, and give back to your community. Contact us to learn more 303.678.6555 or eric@longmontfoundation.org

They also extend their hours Tuesday through Thursday, opening early and staying open late so that patients can visit before or after work. “We have employees with

Cataracts can happen at any age. However, they are the leading cause of treatable visual loss in adults 55 and older. Cataracts don’t form on the eye but rather within the eye. It is a clouding of the natural lens, the part of the eye responsible for focusing light and producing clear, sharp images. As old cells die, they become trapped within the capsule. Through time, the cells accumulate causing the lens to cloud, making images look blurred or fuzzy. Common symptoms are cloudy, fuzzy or foggy or filmy vision, colors that seem faded,
glare from bright lights, halos around lights, not being able to see well at night, double vision and frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions. Anyone over 50 experiencing changes in their vision, who has not had a recent eye health exam by an ophthalmologist trained in all forms of eye disease and treatment, should schedule an appointment soon with Terry E. Partner with IMMUNOe and Take Part in Medicine of the Future IMMUNOe Health Centers is proud to announce that they will be opening a new office and adding additional healthcare services this November in Longmont. As some may already know, the Longmont Medical Research Network was closed and a new entity was formed in November of 2013 with IMMUNOe International Research Centers. By partnering with leading pharmaceutical researchers in the Longmont area, over 50 primary and specialty care physicians were able to stay on the leading edge of medical science and continue to provide patients with earlier access to new medications and technology. The department is currently staffed by fully trained study coordinators, dedicated regulatory personnel and a highly experienced Clinical Director of Research.
GLOBAL MEDICAL DIRECTOR As a respected leader in the field of immunology, Dr. Melamed has dedicated the last decade to researching the connection between the immune system and several immune related disorders. With over 25 years experience in clinical research, Dr. Melamed has served as a Principal Investigator on over 250 trials, published more than 100 papers and lectured in national and international settings
Led by Dr. Isaac Melamed— an internationally respected clinician—IMMUNOe Health Centers has decided to open a full service allergy, asthma and immunology clinic in addition to their current research center. Their core practice is based on the belief that inflammation is the root cause for most diseases – neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastro-intestinal, dermatological, hormonal, and yes, cancer. Together, “allergies” (an oft-misunderstood term) and immune deficiencies can link to begin a cascade effect, overwhelming the body’s natural defense mechanisms. Inflammation left untreated may also lead to ADHD, depression, tremors and even autism, depending on the pa-

tient’s profile. It is IMMUNOe’s mission to provide patients with only the finest in comprehensive primary, allergy and immunology care. To accomplish their goal, they have developed a unique, integrated delivery system that allows them to bring together the clinical expertise of providers in a wide range of disciplines with highly advanced, cutting-edge research and technologies. In doing so, they are able to focus on uncovering the mechanisms of disease, and not merely the treatment of symptoms. Given that inflammation has reached epidemic proportions, this is especially crucial. They are also able to create critical early intervention strategies. Key to their ap-
proach is the coalescence they are able to achieve with the ongoing projects of their research division, IMMUNOe Research. By working in concert with their efforts, IMMUNOe is able to practice—and develop—not only medicine for today, but, medicine for the future. At this point it’s safe to say it. Happy Hounds is a Longmont success story. Being voted Longmont’s Best Pet Daycare/Boarding three years running cements it. Why, you ask? Easy. That simple philosophy was in place when they opened their pens and play yards six years ago and it will continue to guide them into the years to come. Modena Wine Cafe 600 Longs Peak Ave. Longmont 720-438-7410 modenawinecafe.com Most people try to avoid making life-changing decisions at 6:15 a.m., two minutes after waking up. But that’s exactly what Christine Hollenbeck did around two years ago. And when husband Dave heard her speak with complete clarity about her vision, he was completely on board. “Christine said we were going to open a wine bar, and I knew she was serious. It was something we had discussed vaguely as a nice idea in the past, but suddenly she was completely committed. And that meant we both were.” Modena Wine Cafe, in the Roosevelt Park apartment building is the result— two years of hard work, culminating in the realization of the Hollenbecks’ dream. “My ambition was to share everything that I love about wine,” recollects Christine. “Not just the sheer enjoyment of a great big Cabernet or a crisp Pinot Grigio, but the sense of being with friends, laughing,

feeling completely relaxed and comfortable. And of course, that also means serving the kind of food that you’d serve your friends at home - your best recipes, the olives you picked up in Italy... we wanted to create a wine bar that felt like you were at a close friend’s house. The fireplace, the library, that’s all to help create the welcome we feel is so important.” Dave agrees. “It had to be somewhere people felt good about asking questions. Wine snobbery is the exact opposite of what we are trying to promote - so we have a young, upcoming Sommelier, Jamison Clark, who is very approachable, very knowledgeable, and
who really wants to make our wine accessible.” With over 150 wines by the glass, Modena Wine Cafe now serves the largest selection in Colorado with prices ranging from $4 for a surprisingly good table wine to over $100 for a couple of the most exclusive ‘special occasion’ offerings. “People still think wine is expensive,” says Christine. “But a glass of our house red is less than a bottle of Bud at your local bar. I think that represents pretty good value!” Dinner is served courtesy of Chef Eli Wiggs, a local legend, who they explain they could only hire because they gave him carte blanche to employ total creativity in the kitchen.

And then there’s lunch, afternoon Happy Hour from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m., and then evening dinner service, operating Modena is hard work until well beyond closing at 10 or 11 p.m. Is it worth it? In 2004, when the time and opportunity came to open his own shop, Stonum assembled a top notch team and jumped on it. And now almost 11 years later, that dream is growing. Stonum Automotive starting out with a 2,000 square foot shop and two bays quickly spreading into four units with more than 7,000 square feet and now they’ve outgrown their original building completely.
A new, much larger and more efficient, building is going up at 1812 Sunset Place in Longmont. At almost 14,000 square feet, the new building is designed to offer the most advanced and most comfortable service to both customers and employees. Where there used to be eight, 17 brand new bays will allow employees to have more cars in the air and more room to get to them. That will get customers in and out faster than ever before, while maintaining their current award winning level of service.
Accumulating the best in both equipment and employees since 2004, Stonum Automotive has proven themselves year after year to Longmontarea auto owners. Once again, they’ve been voted the best auto repair shop in Longmont by Times-Call readers and they never stop trying to earn it. All Stonum technicians are all ASE certified and provide service on all makes and models, including diesel engines and European models, and also offer tires, alignment, and windshield replacement. Topof-the-line tools and equipment allow them to do a great quality repair the first time. Each technician is equipped with a computer workstation to quickly access information which helps get automobiles fixed and back in
the hands of customers. “Our goal is to try and get every service done in one day,” he says. “We truly are a full-service shop to help our customers.” ‘Honest Car Care and Repair’ is more than just a slogan at Stonum Automotive, it’s the way they do business. “After all, I want to make a lifetime customer out of you,” Stonum says. Whether a customer decides to wait in the comfortable, family-friendly waiting area or opts for a free shuttle ride to their destination, they are able to get people back in their automobile in no time. Stonum Automotive always takes care of its customers with comprehensive auto repair services, affordable prices and superior customer service.

The Chinese Medicine Clinic 385 Main St., Unit D Longmont 303.834.9188 LongmontAcu.com Healing You Naturally… There was a need in Longmont for a full-service acupuncture and Chinese Medicine center. That prompted owners and husband-and-wife team, J. Hadyn Peacock, L.Ac., and Christine Dominick, MBA, to establish a presence in the place they’ve called home since 2005.
Integrated Chinese Medicine Close to Home “We found a lot of people from Longmont were going to Boulder for acupuncture,” says Dominick. “But why travel all that way when we could provide great quality, integrated acupuncture and Chinese Medicine right here?” With over 30 years combined experience, practitioners Peacock and Marian W. Caudron, Ph.D., offer the only center in Longmont with integrated Chinese Medicine. This includes acupuncture, Chinese herbs, Chinese nutritional therapy, Tai Chi and Qigong classes, and Medical Qigong. “The vast majority of our clients don’t get just acupuncture when they come here,” Peacock says. “A combina-
tion of services often impacts our clients’ health more profoundly than acupuncture alone. That’s why we decided early on integrated Chinese Medicine was the only way to go.”
Holistic Care for All “We see all kinds of people here – our youngest client is 3 and our oldest is 90,” says Peacock. “Everyone can benefit from Chinese Medicine to manage and alleviate whatever health issues crop up.” The Chinese Medicine Clinic specializes in pain management, women’s health, sports medicine, sleep and digestive problems, and autoimmune conditions. But it’s beneficial for dozens of health concerns. “We treat shingles, asthma, back and joint pain, migraines, and just about everything but the kitchen sink very effectively,” says Peacock. “Chinese Medicine is also highly effective for women at all stages of their life.”
studied with several masters and a grand master from China, and has taught Tai Chi and Qigong for more than 20 years. “We’re interested in teaching you practices that will improve the quality of your life,” says Caudron. “A lot of people have found it makes them more calm, patient, and happier. They bring that presence into their family and workplace and that helps everybody.”

organizations,” Dominick says. This year the clinic has made donations to Meals on Wheels, Mountain State Children’s Home, Longmont Friends of Feral and Abandoned Cats, The Inn Between, Longmont High School’s football team, and others. And what do clients think of The Chinese Medicine Clinic? “I took a leap of faith to come and I’m blown away, daily, by what he can do for your entire body, not just want you come in for,” says client Brooke Babcock. “It’s a gem here in Longmont.”

Phelps Shoe Repair 2255 Main Street, Suite 103 Longmont 303.776.9762
You may ask, How did two women get into this male dominated business? Owner Tawna Irvine and her colleague Tammy Orr worked for Phelps Shoes for 25 years, until the family wanted to retire. Tawna bought the business from them in 2009. She got started in shoe repair in Boulder during a recession; a friend taught her the craft. But it was through her years of on-thejob training in several shops that she learned multiple ways to get the best results. Tammy sews expertly. Put their talents together and expect excellence. “We have such good customers,” Tawna says. “They like us being women. We get really good feedback.” Tawna had training as a pedorthist – “like a pharma-
cist for the foot.” She takes overthe-counter Tammy orthotics, tweaks and fits them and makes them work for the customer. That level of knowledge makes Phelps different from other shoe repair businesses. If Tawna can’t make them work, she recommends getting a diagnosis from a podiatrist. Phelps also carries sandals and slippers from Vionic, one of the few brands with arch supports. When it comes to saving old shoes from the trash heap, Tawna is persuasive: “There is a lot of footwear that people think is not repairable – but it is. If you’re not

143 Years of Covering Our Community The Times-Call has been an integral part of Longmont’s history from the beginning. At the top of its family tree sits the Free Press, a newspaper established by brothers Elmer and Fred Beckwith of Burlington, Colorado that got its start the same year the City of Longmont was founded: 1871. Elmer and Fred moved to Longmont the following year, and Elmer started publishing the successor of the Free Press, the Longmont Sentinel. The paper changed its name twice in the next few years, becoming the Colorado Press and finally the Longmont Press. In 1879, competing newspaper Longmont Ledger led its first issue with coverage of a fire at the Longmont Press building. In typical Longmont community-centric style, the Ledger printed the Press for several weeks. Elmer and his staff rebuilt the Longmont Press and renamed it the Longmont Weekly Times, which became the Daily Times by 1893. In 1898 another newspaper came to town: the Longmont Call. The city and the publishing industry were booming. Longmont supported three newspapers for more than three decades, but that level of coverage proved unsustainable. The Times and Call merged in 1931, creating the

Ronald Turner, 72, of Divide appeared in Boulder County Court on Thursday for a preliminary hearing on the charges. He already was charged with three counts of second-degree burglary, two counts of violating a protection order, second-degree kidnapping and being an accessory to those crimes. On Thursday, prosecutors filed additional charges, including three new counts of first-degree burglary, felony menacing, use of a stun gun, third-degree assault, second-degree kidnapping, violation of a protection order and child abuse. Defense attorney Scott McComas did not make arguments after initial evidence was presented Thursday. Ronald Turner “There is a question about what the involvement of the defendant is in this case,” he told Boulder County Judge John Stavely, who ruled there is probable cause on all counts and set arraignment for Aug. 30. According to police and prosecutors, Ronald Turner helped his son, Monty Turner, to plan to and ultimately kidnap Monty Turner’s 3-year-old son, Luke, from the boy’s mother’s Longmont home May 25. Police testified that Ronald Turner had misled police looking for the boy when Monty Turner failed to return him to his mother in July 2012 as scheduled. The boy was missing for nine months in the first case, but because Monty Turner still had parental rights to the boy, the disappearance was not initially treated as a kidnapping idnapping case. Police retrieved Luke Turner in March from Monty Turner’s family’s Washington County property, but they did not arrest Monty Turner or anyone else. Brandy Turner then sought custodial rights for the boy and secured them. Investigators reported that Monty Turner on May 25 forced his way into Brandy Turner’s Longmont home, sprayed her with Please see TURNER, on A5

ONGMONT — Morgen Frank rode her first miniature bull Thursday night. It won’t be her last. “That was great,” said the 14-year-old Berthoud girl, who nearly made it to an eight-second scoring ride on her first try. “A little nervous, but fun.” “I held my breath the whole time,” admitted her mom, Kim Frank. “I was thinking ‘No injuries, no injuries.’ ” No kidding. Despite their name and their stubby height — not even 4 feet tall — miniature bulls still have some serious mass behind them. And when a half-ton of “tiny” beef gets on the move, all a young rider can do is ride out the storm, or get out of the way quickly.

Browsing through all of the locally sourced meat options at Frontière Natural Meats.
Frontière Natural Meats 476 17th Ave. Longmont 720.204.6813 frontierelongmont.com Though you may not have heard the name Frontière Natural Meats, odds are you’ve eaten their products more than once. Fontière has been supplying quality organic and natural meats to area restaurants and select grocery stores since 2009. The 2014 opening of the retail location (on the south end of Westview Plaza, facing 17th Ave.) was a first for the company, though. So, why Longmont? Since both company founder, Robert La Point, and store manager,
Richard Honey, live in Longmont, they have a knowledge of the community. It seemed a natural choice for their first brick and mortar store. “Longmont has a rich living off the land, agricultural background - so it seemed to be a prime location,” says Honey. Living and working in Longmont gives them specific insight into what the community needs and wants. The goal is to be “community-centric in what products we bring to the store and how we respond to the shopping habits of the community,” he says. Walking in to browse, you might be surprised by their prices — in a good way. Frontière demonstrates that healthy
choices don’t have to mean sky high prices. Sourcing right here in Colorado definitely helps. “We are a ranch-to-table company - raising the animals in partnerships with the ranchers, doing our own processing and bringing superb quality products direct to the consumer,” Honey explains. Frontière’s beef, bison and elk stand alongside chicken, pork, brats and hot dogs — all-natural, organic, grass-fed and waiting to improve your favorite recipes. Pick up a variety of rubs to complement your selection and find a new recipe on one of two touchscreen tablets. And... as much as we hate to think about it, Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Frontière’s organic and all-natural turkeys are sure to please your guest and they
are currently taking orders for pick-up on November 22. Not only are they providing restaurant quality meats, they are reaching toward becoming a destination within the community with on-site classes and events. Classes cover such topics as preparation tips, nutritional content, and how your body responds to the nutrition of organics and all natural meats. And events like the upcoming First Annual Chili Cook Off on November 1, promise a fun future. For more information competing in the chili cook off or upcoming events, seminars and tastings (or to order your Thanksgiving turkey) visit frontierelongmont.com or drop by and say ‘Hi’. customers at the store. Quality standards are important to The Flower Bin and its employees. The employees at The Flower Bin are knowledgeable about the products they provide. The department managers and growers have hundreds of years of combined gardening experience. If a staff member does not know the answer to a question, they make the effort to find out and will call customers at home, if necessary. This kind of customer service and knowledge is second to none, and one would be hard pressed to find such assistance elsewhere. Of course, none of this would be possible without the owners, Don and Lee Weakland, who have done a fine job of growing the business into a successful entrepreneurial masterpiece. Don’t forget, The Flower Bin is open all year and always ready to serve Colorado gardeners.
