A roundabout find
By Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson
Scripps Howard News Service
Dear Helaine and Joe: A woman gave this chair to my parents in 1916 as a gift. She had originally received it from another woman in Newport, R.I. How old is it? What is its value? – J.R.R.
Dear J.R.R.: With its provenance – or the known history of the object – it might be easy to assume that this chair is American, but it is not. The particular piece in today’s question is a corner or “roundabout” chair. In American and English cabinetmaking, the corner chair is generally described as an openbacked armchair designed to be placed in a corner when not in use and then pulled into the room when needed. Corner chairs are said to have originated in the early 18th century in England, and typically were designed in the Queen Anne, early Georgian and Chippendale styles. While this item is definitely a corner chair, it does not meet the exact configuration. This conventional wisdom had us thinking that it was probably Continental European, of Germanic origin. Now when we say “Germanic origin,” we do not necessarily mean it was made in Germany proper, but
in some locale that was greatly influenced by German culture. A little additional research, however, surprised us, and we found that this exact style of chair is indeed English, and we even found one – a much simpler and less attractive version – that had been offered for sale. It turns out that most of these rustic English corner chairs were made from oak, but this one appears to be finer and made from walnut. This is a sophisticated example of a rustic English corner chair, and because of this sophistication, we feel it was probably made in the first half of the 19th century. For insurance purposes, it should be valued in the $750 to $900 range. Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson are the authors of “Price It Yourself” (HarperResource, $19.95). Choosing a color palette can be a difficult task, but set yourself up for success by knowing the basics of the color wheel and how different schemes work. • Follow the color principle of 60-3010 to create an aesthetically pleasing color scheme. Divide your color choices into percentages: 60 percent is a dominant color, 30 percent is a secondary color and 10 percent is the accent color. • Always consider how lighting will affect color choices. Before finalizing your selections, see how each color will look
in the room during different times of the day. • While beige is a neutral, shades of your favorite colors can also act as neutrals in your room. A neutral just needs to be a balance of warm and cool tones. • Adding a trendy color to a room’s palette can be the fresh take you need. Wall colors and accessories can be easily switched out, but when purchasing furniture, choose shades that will stand the test of time. – HGTV

Take pest control into your own hands
Add sass and class to the summer garden Netherlands Flower bulb Center
Summer is gardening’s crowded hour. So many perennials and annuals thrive in that season’s sun and heat that it can be easy to overlook the role that flower bulbs play. Most gardeners are familiar with tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and other bulbs that dominate the spring landscape. But there is another class of bulbs entirely comprised of summer bloomers. These include some of the most exotic flowers found in any garden, and spring is the time to plan and plant them. Summer bulbs include Oriental lilies, gloriosa and a wide range of dahlias that are literally flower factories. “You might expect such stellar plants to be hard to grow,” says Sally Ferguson of the Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Center in Danby, Vt. “The surprise is that they’re not at all tricky.” As an introduction to these savory summer flowers, the NFBIC has created a new Summer Bulb Primer on their informational website, www.bulb.com. The Primer is a photo-filled, informationpacked resource that profiles the top 10 bulbs for the summer garden that are available from garden retailers as either DIY bulbs or as “ready-to-go” pre-grown potted bedding plants. The primer includes exotic garden treats such as climbing gloriosa vines, tufted tropicallooking pineapple lilies (Eucomis), multitudes of tall and short leafy cannas, new colorful callas (Zantedeschia) with metallic-spotted leaves, flamboyant fragrant lilies, bounti-
fully- blooming begonias, bigleaved elephant ears, oodles of oxalis and caladiums, and dahlias of all types and coloration. All are suited to garden beds and summer containers. Most summer bulbs are tender by nature and cannot survive cold winters without protection. Depending on where you garden, summer blooming bulbs can be grown as annuals or perennials – or something in between. In warmer USDA zones, summer bulbs in the garden will readily come back as perennial performers. At season’s end in cooler areas, gardeners can choose to save summer bulbs for growing again in future seasons. Where winter exposure is an issue, lift and store bulbs indoors overwinter. Even easier, bulbs grown in containers can be stored overwinter “as is” (right in their pots) in a protected area. Just cease watering until it’s time for start-up next season. Even so, saving bulbs is optional, a benefit not an obligation. Likewise, don’t let “where you live” limit which tender summer bulbs you grow. In summer, tender bulbs will grow most anywhere. In hotter areas, even cool-loving dahlias can thrive if provided with mulch and afternoon shade. In colder zones, the most outrageous, heat-loving tropical plants fare beautifully if protected from cold at the growing season’s beginning and again at its end. To get started with summer bulbs, make a quick visit to www.bulb.com’s Summer Bulb Primer. To take things to a higher level, visit www.bulb .com’s Summer Bulb Glossary.

Warm weather welcomes more than just outdoor barbecues, summer vacation and vegetable gardens – it brings back the pests that like to annoy us. Insect problems are more than just irritating – they can potentially pose serious risks. If you’re struggling to solve a pest problem in or around your home, and don’t want to pay for someone to solve it for you, there are solutions that are effective and affordable. “While not all insects are harmful, some, such as ticks, mosquitoes and fleas, can carry life-threatening diseases,” says Larry Coltharp, director of insect control research and development with Black Flag, a leader in pest control solutions. “Some insects prefer building dangerous nests outside your home, while others find little voids to creep inside and then lay eggs in hidden areas around your house. This is when it can become a serious health threat to small children and pets, and becomes necessary to treat your house to remove these risks from your environment.” A new product from Black Flag, Extreme Home Insect Control, is ideal for do-it-yourselfers looking to solve or prevent bug problems on their own, especially in today’s tough economy. The Pump ’n Spray unit, available at Lowe’s for around $16, offers an average savings of $100 versus calling a professional exterminator. The new system creates a long-lasting perimeter of defense against bugs, notably up to nine months against German cockroaches. The 1.33-gallon Pump ’n Spray container requires just 12 to 15 pumps to produce up to 10 minutes of continuous spraying. Children, pets and adults can enter treated areas once the spray has fully dried. For maximum protection against pests, Coltharp recommends applying the spray around the perimeter of your home, indoors and out. Prevention is the best solution, so spray all possible points of entry for insects, including doors, cracks, crevices and exterior windows. Don’t forget to cover areas like the attic and garage. – Article Resource Association

Ever wish you could see through the hype to hire the best real estate agent for buying or selling your home? When it comes to choosing real estate agents, “we don’t have the information that we have about other service professionals,” says Stephen Brobeck, executive director of the Consumer Federation of America, in Washington, D.C. However, there are things you can do to pull back the curtain and accurately assess a real estate agent’s past performance and potential success with your home. Whether you’re the buyer or the seller, here are seven ways you can find out more about your agent before you hire. Ask agents to provide a list of what they’ve listed and sold in the last year, with contact information, says Ron Phipps, president-elect of the Chicago-based National Association of Realtors. Before you start calling the names, ask the agent if anyone will be “particularly pleased or particularly disappointed,” he says. With past clients, “I’d like to know what the asking price was and then what the sales price was,” says William Poorvu, professor emeritus at Harvard Business School and co-author of “The Real Estate Game: The Intelligent Guide to Decision-making and Investment.” And, if you’re the seller, ask if these past properties are similar to yours in price, location and other salient features, Poorvu says. What you want is someone who specializes in exactly what you’re selling. Another good question for sellers is: How long has the home been on the market? States will have boards that license and discipline real estate agents in those states, Phipps says. Check with your state’s regulatory body to find out if the person is licensed and if there have been any disciplinary actions or complaints. Some states, including Virginia, Arizona and California, put the information into online databases that consumers can search. “But I think very few people do,” says Robert Irwin, author of “Tips & Traps When Buying a Home.” Peer-given awards count, Phipps says. One that really means something is the Realtor of the Year designation awarded by the state or local branch of the National Association of Realtors. “These agents are the best as judged by their peers,” he says. “That’s a huge endorsement.” Just as doctors specialize, so do real estate agents. And even generalists will get additional training in some areas. So that
alphabet soup after the name can be an indication that the person has taken additional classes in a certain specialty of real estate sales. Here’s what some of the designations mean: • ¸CRS (Certified Residential Specialist): Completed additional training in handling residential real estate. • ¸ABR (Accredited Buyer’s Representative): Completed additional education in representing buyers in a transaction. • ¸SRES (Seniors Real Estate Specialist): Completed training aimed at helping buyers and sellers in the 50-plus age range. If the agent calls himself a Realtor with a capital “R,” that means he’s a member of the National Association of Realtors. By hiring a Realtor, “the most important thing you get is an agent who formally pledges to support the code of ethics,” Phipps says. Five years ago, one-third of real estate licensees were Realtors, he says. “Now, it’s half.” You can often find out how long the agent has been selling real estate from the state licensing authority. Or, you can just ask the agent. “If they haven’t been in business five years, they’re learning on you and that’s not good,” Irwin says. Ultimately, what you’re looking for is someone who is actively engaged in a particular area and price range, Phipps says. You’ll want to know what knowledge of those two factors they can demonstrate and “what kind of market presence they have,” he says. Check out an agent’s listings online, Brobeck says. Two places to look are the agency’s own site and Realtor.com, a website that compiles properties in the Multiple Listing Service into a searchable online database. Most buyers start their search on the Internet, and you want an agent who uses that tool effectively. “A key thing is an attractive presentation on the Web,” Brobeck says. You also can look at how closely the agent’s listings mirror the property you want to buy or sell. Are they in the same area? Is the price range similar? And does the agent have enough listings to indicate a healthy business but not so many that you’d just be a number? A good agent should know about other available area properties “off the top of his head,” says Irwin, who wrote “Tips & Traps When Buying a Home.” Mention a house in your area that sold recently or is for sale. If the agent knows the property and can give you a few details that means he or she really knows your area, he says. Says Irwin: “You want someone like that who’s on top of the market.”

Bring on the Birds
Furnishing the family space can be tough By Rosemary Sadez Friedmann
Simple solutions to turn your backyard into an avian oasis Article Resource Association
Who doesn’t love spring? Flowers bloom, trees bud and bright songbirds return to the area. The renewed resurgence of radiant life may make you want to get in on the action. But if gardening’s not your thing and you just don’t see yourself as the type to go on a long outdoor hike, you can still engage in spring’s revelry and bring beautiful birds to your own backyard. Convincing songbirds and favorites like hummingbirds to visit your yard is as simple as providing them with plentiful sources of food, water and nesting material. The avian experts at Songbird Essentials, a leading provider of accoutrements and food for outdoor birds of all species, offer a few tips for attracting some popular, feathered friends to your neighborhood. Birds need to eat a lot to survive every day. While natural food sources are plentiful in warmer months, they’re just as happy to dine at your backyard buffet. You can attract delightful birds with the right mix of food and feeder types. Start out by overlooking a few dandelions when you’re weeding your yard. Goldfinches love dandelion seed. They also like company when they eat and will dine in large groups. Look for feeders, like the Three Tube Finch Feeder, that allow 24 or more birds to perch and dine at the same time. Orioles, with their glossy black coats trimmed in bright orange or yellow, will fill your backyard with distinctive whistles and songs. They migrate at night and arrive in your neighborhood tired, cold and hungry, so if you wait until you actually see them to put out food, you might miss them altogether. Set out oranges, sliced in half with the juicy side out, before you see the first oriole of the season. Or try feeding them all new BirdBerry
Jelly, a human grade product that’s better for the birds. It’s all natural – no preservatives – and is lower in sugar content than most jellies. The unique grape/blackberry flavor attracts orioles and other species and keeps them coming back for more. Try using a feeder like Songbird Essentials’ Grand Slam Oriole Feeder made of recycled plastic. It holds four orange halves and has two serving bowls for jelly. Other birds that love jelly include woodpeckers, robins and warblers. Hummingbirds are among the most intriguing and adorable birds to watch. Nearly every region of the United States has at least one native species of these tiny, speedy little birds. There are several ways you can tempt them into your yard; try these tips: • Provide plenty of nectar feeders – the more the merrier. Dr. J.B.’s Hummingbird Feeder is a good choice; it is dishwasher safe and easy to clean, has an extra wide mouth for easy filling and is bee resistant. Bob Sergeant, president of the Hummer Bird Study Group, the world’s largest association dedicated to the study and preservation of hummingbirds, simply says; “This is the best hummingbird feeder ever!” Plus, the hummers love it. • Be sure hummers see red. Plant red
• Let the water flow. Hummingbirds prefer moving water sources like sprinklers, fountains, waterfalls, misters or drippers. Attract hummingbirds by keeping water sources fresh and clean and positioning them near food sources. • Provide natural nesting material. Hummingbirds won’t nest in birdhouses or nesting boxes, they build their cupshaped nests in trees. Encourage nesting by providing materials such as Hummer Helper Nesting Material, recommended by the Hummingbird Society of North America. An all-natural product, Hummer Helper comes in an open wire frame that allows hummingbirds easy access to natural nesting material.

open-throated plants. Or, if planting is not possible, tie a big red bow in your yard near your feeder.

Living rooms and family rooms are always fun to decorate, though sometimes they can be a challenge. Let’s start with an open-plan room. What I mean is a room that has basically one solid wall and another wall that is mostly windows. The other two walls don’t exist, but instead are open to other rooms. Where to put the furniture? If this is the look of your living room, the sofa can rest by the solid wall with armchairs flanking both sides. Fill in the room with a few end tables, trees and plants. Add a couple tasteful pictures and lamps, and the room becomes a welcoming haven without much fuss. If the room is on the small side, put a chair on only one side of the sofa and limit the extra decor. If you have a family room, place a wall unit on the solid wall. Fill the wall unit with the right-sized television and books, accessories and family pictures. The sofa should then face the wall unit with armchairs again flanking the sofa. Or, if you prefer individual sitting for watching the tube, set two recliners with a table between facing the wall unit, and flank those chairs with small love seats on either side. Again, if the room is small, have only one love seat with a couple of ottomans on either side. In either of these rooms, entertain the idea of creative storage. Use a trunk as the cocktail table so it can double as a storage unit. Some ottomans also come with a storage compartment which are ideal for games and toys. Purchase end tables with drawers for added storage. If there is room behind the sofa or the love seat, put a low bookcase there for book storage. The top of the bookcase could be used for a lamp. In the family room, big, square, extralarge pillows can serve as seats. They are easy to move around, and adults as well as children love them. Always be sure there is sufficient lighting. A variety of light sources is ideal so the room can be bright when necessary and softly lit other times.

Finding the right lighting The Layered Look When it comes to illuminating a room, lighting pros recommend thinking in terms of layers. In general, every room should have three basic layers of light: general or ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting.

A: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, because procedures vary. Check the manual. If that’s not available, check the manufacturer’s website.
Q: How does one check a carbon monoxide alarm to make sure it’s working?
The test button on some alarms will test the circuitry as well as the CO sensor, while the test button on other units tests just the circuitry.
