Make outdoor furniture last with planning, care An ongoing renovation at my house has included the purchase of some outdoor furniture. I had some difficulty finding durable items for a reasonable price. I also wanted to minimize the impact my purchase had on the environment. One major cause of tropical deforestation is the demand for tropical timber used in manufacturing outdoor furniture, according to the Forest Stewardship Council. The vast majority of garden furniture available in U.S. stores is made from tropical hardwoods. These woods are prized for their durability and good looks, but illegal logging and destructive forest-management practices continue to harm many endangered tropical forests. Americans import more outdoor furniture made from tropical wood than any other country, according to the FSC. As responsible consumers, we can encourage and patronize those stores that sell wood products that come from well-managed forests. To support sustainable forests, look for the FSC tag on furniture. For more information, visit www.fscus.org/productsearch/retailers. Most outdoor furniture will last for years if properly cared for. Oil your wood furniture and clean wrought iron, aluminum and other metal on a regular basis. Make sure the cleaner you use matches the furniture manufacturer’s recommendations. To stay within a budget, look for used outdoor furniture. A good cleaning and new cushions will make most furniture look like new. – Mary Collister, St. Petersburg Times

Pierhead painting holds value most always painted from a broadside view with all the sails set and pennants flying. These portraits were often exact and technically accurate; in fact, when one of these ship paintings is compared to a photograph of the same vessel, it is amazing how similar the two images turn out to be. As J.H. notes, Luca Papaluca generally painted in watercolor and gouache, and only occasionally worked in oil, which probably took too long to dry for his purposes. Louis Papaluca, however, moved to the United States and worked far more frequently in oil than his more famous father. Regarding today’s item, it is unclear which Papaluca’s signature adorns the painting. We feel strongly, however, that the artist for this piece is the younger Papaluca, because it is oil on canvas and is a New York scene rather than a pierhead. This piece is a beautiful representation of the New York Harbor replete with the Statue of Liberty. At auction, the painting should bring around $600 and be worth only a little more for insurance purposes. Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson are the authors of “Price It Yourself” (HarperResource, $19.95). Contact them at Treasures in Your Attic, P.O. Box 18350, Knoxville, TN 37928. E-mail them at treasures@knology.net.

Our home-office renovation was not expensive. We stripped the old wallpaper, and then primed the wood trim. My husband and I did all the painting ourselves. The pine bookcases, mine since childhood, languished in our old basement for years, but my husband sanded and painted them. I hung a pair of Roman shades that we brought with us from a previous house. Before that, they were in my parents’ house – a good reminder that if you get custom window treatments, choose a neutral color because windows often are standard sizes and you may be able to use those window treatments again. The furniture – a pine trestle table, rolling chair and a small, drop-leaf desk – are all things that we already owned. Because the drop-leaf desk is small, I

cleaned out the drawers and use it to store paper, pens, envelopes and other office supplies. I bought a white-framed bulletin board at a local Pottery Barn outlet for less than $25, and moved in a lamp from the bedroom for my desk. We now have an attractive, functional home office. Since we didn’t have to buy furniture, window treatments or office equipment for the room and saved money by doing the painting and other labor ourselves, I decided to splurge on a highquality Tibetan wool carpet. Even that, though, we purchased online from the manufacturer in a closeout sale, at a price that was more than 75 percent off the suggested retail. The result is a room that, aside from the rug, cost less than $200.

Budget-friendly office redo

By Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson Dear Helaine and Joe: I have this painting that is signed “Papaluca,” and it depicts the New York Harbor. I am told that it is unusual for this artist to paint in oil, as his usual medium is watercolor. Is this correct? Can you tell me the value of the painting? – J.H. Dear J.H.: What’s in a name? Obviously, a great deal when it comes to artists and their work, but the last name Papaluca is not one that springs to mind when the topic of collectible art comes up in casual conversation. In addition, a problem arises because there were two artists with this last name who painted seascapes – Luca the father (1890-1934) and Louis the son. Both worked in a similar style and both signed their paintings L. Papaluca, which has caused endless confusion among auction houses trying to sell their wares and collectors who admire their work. Luca Papaluca was a well-known “pierhead” painter in Naples, Italy. This term is probably unfamiliar to most, but it refers to an artist – usually not formally trained – who painted souvenir portraits of ships for the seamen and passengers who sailed on them. Pierhead artists often had to work fast to complete the painting. Because pierheads had to satisfy the expectations of their clientele, ships were al-

Creating an irresistible gate Scripps Howard News Service

“A door opened, and I went through it,” said Temple Grandin, the brilliant autistic woman who revolutionized the cattle industry in America. Such a simple statement is far more meaningful than we could ever even imagine, for it embodies the lure of portals to another world. In a film about her life, doors became a metaphor for moving forward into the unknown, both in a literal and figurative sense. In the design of landscapes, gates can act as those metaphysical doors.

This yellow gate is simple to make, but the addition of great hinges and a latch gives it plenty of character. (SHNS/Courtesy Maureen Gilmer)

Today’s smaller plots of land include side yards and other unconventional spaces for outdoor living, in order to extend indoor views or even to grow food. Therefore, the traditional dogeared, side-yard cedar fence is suddenly front and center. Now the gate must change from merely functional to something visually appealing that beckons one closer. Those with money can buy antique gates imported from India and Africa, where the designs are both rich and tactile. The carved edges, surface textures, rust patterns and heavy handmade hardware are unsurpassed in lending character to a garden. But antique gates cost money, and many of us don’t have a dollar to spare. Fortunately, there are alternatives for small-budget gardenmakers to create irresistible gates. Color can be the most visually profound choice for a gate makeover and particularly useful in a modern design. Veneer becomes the cover-up equivalent to interior paneling or wallpaper, offering a source of textural changes. And the hardware is the perfect way to get that fabulous rustic gate you’ve admired in the magazines for only a few dollars online. Color Paint can be your best friend; color makes a huge difference

when used in small, intense applications. A bright paint job can turn an afterthought into a focal point, hide ugly water stains, disguise cracks and even cover graffiti. You will find that people just want to go through a painted gate for the fun of it, so make yours as irresistible as possible. Veneer If you have an ordinary board gate, use it as a structural background for another lightweight material. For example, broken bamboo-slat roll-up shades removed from indoors can be cut and applied to a board-gate surface. They are lightweight and easy to handle, particularly for smaller urban spaces. Just cut the panel to size, and screw it onto the front or board side of the gate at the corners and edges. The bamboo will give the gate a real Asian character. Hardware Large, decorative hinges can turn a perfectly ordinary gate into something far more artistic. In fact, you can turn a new gate into a faux version of those expensive antique gates by using rustic, newly made Mexican hardware. It’s easy to get online at Direct From Mexico (www.directfrom mexico.com). In Mexico, the “clavo” is a metal nail used to hold heavy wooden doors together. Modern clavos are

decorative nails that can be bought online from 75 cents to $3. Pre-drill the hole, then screw in the clavo with some glue to make it more secure. Smart ways to save money Loan modification

hurdles can be hard

Article Resource Association

Summer is a great time to install a rain garden, improve storm-water runoff in your yard, redo your windows or siding, or even change the look of one of the rooms inside your house with new paint and furniture. No matter what project you have on your summer to-do list, you’re going to be shopping for supplies, and depending on how large your project is, the price can add up quickly. Here are some tips to get your home improvement projects going, while keeping a bit of extra cash in your pocket. • DIY – If you have any handy talents, you can save a lot of money by doing the project yourself, or by only contracting out part of the work where a professional might be required. If you aren’t certain about installing a wood floor in your living room or are in need of landscaping ideas for around your back porch, head to your local library and check out several books on the topic for background knowledge. • Negotiate work agreements with your friends – Having more hands on deck to help with the work will make the job go much faster, but you don’t have to

hire the help. Offer your friends a trade – maybe you’ll take them out for dinner. Or volunteer your services on one of their home improvement projects. Just make sure they understand the trade before the work gets started. • Put cash back in your pocket when purchasing supplies – You can find great deals on supplies from home improvement retailers. • Look for contracting specials – If you do need to hire a contractor to help you with your project, look online to find specials being offered this summer. You can also find coupons for discounts in home improvement newspaper tabs. Some of the more popular coupon topics include insulation, siding, windows, doors and roofing projects. • Stage your project over time – You might discover

your project is too much to handle – both physically and financially – in one season. The best recommendation is to break it down into mini projects. For example, if you want to landscape the entire yard, consider concentrating first on a vegetable garden or a flower garden that outlines the house. One advantage to breaking down a huge project is it allows you to discover how much maintenance and upkeep work you need to do on a yearly basis. As the summer winds down, fast forward your imagination to this fall where you are enjoying that new room inside the house, or are sitting on your refinished deck and admiring your backyard with its fresh gardens. And you should feel a smile spreading across your face as you remember how much money you saved on your project.

New rose plentiful with petals

Rosa ‘Sir John Betjeman’ is a repeat-flowering Leander Hybrid with approximately 130 petals. It’s a rose of more modern character than most English Roses. The flowers start as small buds, opening to full-petalled, wide-open rosettes of a bright, deep pink, the color intensifying further with age. The flowers are 2.5 to 3 inches across and are produced freely. They have a light, rather ‘green’ fragrance. A healthy and very bushy shrub of medium size with a slightly arching habit. With its bright coloration this is a good choice to create some contrast in a border of other roses of softer coloring. Sir John Betjeman was a writer, journalist and broadcaster, who was born just more than 100 years ago. Size: 3.5 feet tall by 2.5 feet wide. Hardiness: USDA zones 5 to 9.

First-time homebuyers almost always make a few mistakes when buying their home. Perhaps they pay too much, choose the wrong type of mortgage or neglect to budget for needed home improvements. Working with a trustworthy, experienced lender can help prevent such mistakes. But consumers also need to take responsibility for their budgets and choices. “Before buying a home, consumers need to develop a short- and long-term perspective on their purchase,” says Michael Harrison, area director for MetLife Home Loans in Southwest Ohio. One mistake comes when lenders qualify buyers based on their incomes and debtto-income ratios without considering how much the borrowers spend on items such as transportation, savings, food and other necessities. “A lot of first-time buyers are optimistic about the future and excited about buying a home, so they borrow the absolute maximum they can afford instead of allowing themselves wiggle room for a partial loss of income or for future expenses such as children,” Harrison says. Financial experts recommend that consumers decide how much they want to spend each month on housing before meeting with a lender. “Every buyer should create their own budget and know their limits,” says Stephen Adamo, president of Weichert Financial Services in Morris Plains, N.J. Adamo says many first-time homebuyers experience a sizable change in their housing payments. Some new owners may go from $500 per month in rent to a monthly mortgage payment of $2,000, he says. “You need to deal with payment shock,” Adamo says. Meeting with a lender for a buyer consultation and prequalification for a mortgage should be the first step toward homeownership. Yet many first-time homebuy-

ers wait until they are ready to start house hunting before contacting a lender. “It’s never too early to set up a free buyer consultation with a lender,” Adamo says. “Every buyer needs to get prequalified early enough in the process so that they can make some changes if they need to or correct errors on their credit report.” Some buyers may need to spend up to a year saving more money, increasing their incomes or cleaning up their credit before making an offer on a home. A buyer consultation should include creating long-term financial goals and strategies for buying property, Adamo says. While most consumers know it’s important to have a high credit score, not everyone understands how costly a low score can be. “All mortgage lending is done with a tier of interest rates and terms based on consumer credit scores,” Harrison says. “A credit score of 720 or above will earn you the best rates and can potentially save you thousands of dollars.” A score of 680 to 720 can get you good mortgage rates, while a FICO score of 620 is usually about the lowest score to qualify for most loans, Harrison says. Consumers should learn about credit scores the minute they start working, Harrison says. Many websites provide information about how to improve your credit score. Even after a mortgage approval, consumers must avoid applying for new credit or taking on new debt, Adamo says, because a second credit check is now often required before settlement. First-time homebuyers today typically opt for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage. Their conservatism is a reaction to stories about the dangers of interest-only mortgages and adjustable-rate mortgages. Homebuyers eager to build equity in their homes or who are older and want to live mortgage-free in retirement should consider a 15-year fixed-rate loan or, if they can afford it, even a 10-year mortgage to reach their goals.
