Use Asian veggies in a tasty way The Associated Press
Asian vegetables are pleasing to the palate, nutritious yet often overlooked as ingredients in American menus. Here is a glossary of some of the most popular Chinese edibles and herbs, and how they might be prepared. • Bok choy (also known as pak choy, celery mustard, Chinese chard and spoon cabbage). The mild, slightly sweet flavor of its leafy white stalks complements strong flavors and is popular in stir-fry and soups. Younger or baby versions are often cooked to bring out their tenderness in a side dish. • Mustard greens (gai choy, takana, Chinese or Indian mustard). Nutritious and fast-growing with a pleasantly spicy taste when eaten raw. Young leaves are good in salads; older leaves have a stronger taste, which becomes sweeter when steamed or stir-fried. • Snow peas (shid dou, ho lan dou, sugar peas). Tender, sweet and
taste best when eaten young in their flat pods or before the peas mature. The flavor breaks down quickly after the peas are picked. Use fresh in salads; saute briefly and serve as a side dish. • Chinese cabbage (wong bok, hakusai, Napa cabbage). You’ve eaten Napa cabbage if you’ve sampled kimchi, the pickled (and fiery) national dish of Korea. A vase-shaped cabbage with dark, curly leaves and white stem. Has a mild bite when eaten raw; cooking sweetens it. • Flowering kale (wu tou gan lan, hwa choy, flowering cabbage). Makes a colorful salad and an even better garnish. • Chinese radish (daikon, winter radish). Large leaves and huge roots. Generally cooked, although also popular pickled or raw. All parts are edible. • Chinese eggplant (aubergine, gie zi). Creamy texture and nutty flavor. Generally smaller and more colorful than its European counter-
parts. Can be grilled, like zucchini, or sauteed with other vegetables. Add unpeeled to stir-fry. • Chinese broccoli (kalian, gai lan, white flowering broccoli). Tender stalks and flavorful leaves. It’s eaten stems and all when cooked up in stir-fry, steamed or tossed into salads. • Garlic chives (jiu cai, gow choy, Chinese leek). Combines the taste of onion with garlic. Sprinkle fresh over salads; strengthens flavors in soups, pasta, eggs or casseroles. • Cilantro (coriander, Chinese parsley). Adds zest to salads or eggs; makes a great seasoning when added toward the end of the cooking cycle to stews. Seed can be crushed and used in breads and soups. • Edible soybeans (edamame, da tou). A great appetizer or snack when cooked in the pod; nutty and buttery when eaten fresh from the garden. Pick before the pods turn yellow. An excellent fresh vegetable in winter when eaten as a sprout. A broad spectrum of experiences gave interior designer Julianne Fallert a fearless appreciation for living life in a full array of color. She grew up in Minneapolis, Tokyo and Brussels and went to college in Evanston, Ill., where she got an economics degree from Northwestern University. That peripatetic existence left her with a vivid perspective on design and an understanding that beige is for the bland at heart. Working as a textile sales representative reinforced that notion: “It was a really well-paying job, so I had to keep it,” she says, laughing. “The way I decorate is from the gut. I do claim to have a leg up as a designer because of my travels. The more you see the better you are.” The moment you enter the family’s Fox Chapel, Pa.-area home, the crispness of the blue walls and white trim hit you like a fresh

sea breeze. The center hall staircase’s custommilled, bright white banister with simple, straight spindles is set off against a backdrop of Benjamin Moore Starry Night blue. An arrangement of yellow sunflowers, sitting on the Kenya table by Hickory Business Furniture, pops against that brilliant background. A lime-green carpet leads upstairs to rooms used by two of her three daughters. The girls’ rooms are decorator perfect in pink but not so precious to be unlivable. Color is everywhere, from the Coneflower Yellow in the family room to the Spring Moss Green and Twilight Blue walls in the dining room. But the truth is this designer never starts with the paint color. “I always start with something someone loves, whether it’s a painting or a rug or whatever,” she says. “In the dining room there is a painting by a Japanese artist. It means a lot to me since I spent six years there as a child.” The living-room focus is “Abyssinian Wall,” a painting by Pittsburgh artist Marie Kelly. The rug is a commissioned piece that was handloomed in Tibet, and the Donghia club chairs are upholstered in a 1940s horizontal stripe fabric by Maharam with a contrast welt by Kravet.

Each room blends into the next like a sophisticated rainbow because she and her husband wanted the house to accommodate family and friends with laid-back charm. “It’s comfortable, that’s my thing,” she says. “We have pancake breakfasts here for our daughter’s swim team, so I didn’t want a place I had to worry about.” Worry-free, colorful and comfortable is the Maine Cottage furniture she used in the girls’ rooms and the kitchen. A massive granitetopped island (it took 13 men to carry in the 5by-9-foot slab) and cherry-stained cabinets look out toward a wall of windows and the pine kitchen table. The sun used to be so strong coming in the wall of glass that for a while she kept a basket of sunglasses on the table. The room was so bright that she had a 3M film applied to the windows. It’s a trick she often uses in her work. “It really cuts the glare but is completely unnoticeable. One of the first things I do is have clients protect their textiles and fabrics by doing that. Those can be big investments, and this prevents sun damage and fading. “It’s a happy house,” Fallert says. “Even my teen-age daughters and their friends like to spend time here and hang out. They love it.”

HGTV series “Bang for Your Buck” takes a look at Boulder home remodels to estimate the value and whether the homeowners will recoup their investment on a future sale
Story by Kristi Ritter Longmont Times-Call
Photos by Ron Forth Photography
Homeowners Jim and Julie Barber worked with Longmont architect Bill Sawyers of W.J. Sawyers and Associates to create a master suite that reflected their comfort style.
Remodeling a home takes careful consideration as it’s hard to determine which choices provide the greatest return on investment. But thanks to Home & Garden Television’s “Bang for Your Buck” series, homeowners chosen for the show can find out whether their choices will be recouped in a future sale. Local homeowners Jim and Julie Barber recently remodeled their master bedroom and bath with the help of Longmont architect Bill Sawyers, who owns W.J. Sawyers and Associates and Precision Construction. In June, Sawyers saw a posting on the city of Longmont’s Web site advertising HGTV’s request for a local remodel. He immediately contacted HGTV and was chosen at the final moment to be featured on the show, which will air on HGTV Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. MST. In each episode, three homeowners from the same city – in this case the Boulder area – renovate the same room in the house with the same budget. The master suites on next Fridays show were done with a $90,000 budget – one a traditional master in a historic home, another a chic contemporary and the Barbers, a traditional master in a ranch home. HGTV designer Sabrina Soto and a local real estate expert came in after the renovations to evaluate the value of the home and reveal whether they thought the remodeling choices were a wise investment. While Sawyers had not heard of the show before
contacting them, he says the experience was exciting, even though they were not featured on the show – only the homeowners were filmed. But the involvement was still fun with a huge effort at the end to pull together everything the show’s producers requested in terms of costs and materials used for the remodel. Sawyers has worked with the Barbers for years on different jobs after they saw his work at a Parade of Homes. Their home featured in “Bang for Your Buck” is located near Haystack Mountain in Niwot and incorporates their keen design sense along with Sawyers architectural influence. “They have a very good design sense, so they were very involved in the design,” Sawyers says. “They have a very comfortable home.” The master suite remodel was just a part of the entire house remodel which upgraded everything. Sawyers has more than 30 years experience, getting a start in Boulder and now in Longmont for the past 10 years. His work ranges from high-end residential to business development throughout Boulder County. Currently, he’s working on the design and building of 380 Main St. and recently completed the interior space for Cayenne Kitchen on Main Street. Neither the Barbers or Sawyers know how the show ended up and whether their remodel was marked as a “Bang for Your Buck.” Tune in next Friday to find out.

Loan modifications are supposed to lower payments By Ilyce Glink Tribune Media Services,
Ilyce Glink Tribune Media Services
Q: My aunt heard you talking on your radio show about the new law for home loan modifications. I currently have an FHA loan through one of the big box lenders and am now three months behind, due to medical reasons. I have talked with a representative from my lender, and they are supposed to be doing a medical hardship loan modification for me once I get everything faxed over to them. The lender is giving me a three-month trial loan modification to see if I can make these next three payments on time. If so, they will modify my loan. Our normal payments are $1088.83, and the three payments they have us set up on are $1130.39. My question is, do you think this is the route I should take or should I wait for the new law to take effect? I would greatly appreciate any help or advice you can give me. I am trying to avoid foreclosure and will soon be three payments behind. Thank you for your help. A: I’m confused as to how you can afford to spend more on the modified loan than you did on your old payment schedule. It sounds to me that the lender has simply tacked onto your payments what you owed and re-
amortized your loan payments. That’s not much of a loan modification. A better option would simply be for your lender to extend your loan to a 30- or even 40-year term to get your payments down. This might allow them to leave your payments where they are or even make them lower. You might also press your lender to lower your interest rate all the way down to 2 percent, if it will get your payments back to around 31 percent of your gross monthly income (or even less than that) so they are affordable as you come out of this medically induced financial crisis. I’m concerned about you signing up for a loan modification that requires higher payments. Almost 70 percent of loans that were modified have gone bad, most because payments weren’t reduced at all, and in some cases were higher. I don’t know what the lenders are thinking, but if you can’t afford your payments before your loan is modified, how can you afford to make higher payments during the trial loan modification period? You don’t mention where you are with your health issues, but I hope they’re all behind you now. For general knowledge, all loan modifications are temporary for several months, and can be made permanent after you have made three on-time payments. I don’t know what new law
you’re referring to, but the big box lenders and other loan servicers are being pushed by the federal government to step up their actions to help more people modify their loans. Currently, the Obama administration is attempting to get lenders to modify borrowers’ loans under the Making Home Affordable loan program. Under the plan, lenders are encouraged to modify terms for troubled loans by reducing the interest rate or extending the term. In some cases, interest rates can be reduced to two percent and terms can go out to 40 years. FHA announced a new program for loan modifications that would allow a modification to be based on 70 percent of the loan. The remaining 30 percent would be a silent second loan at zero percent interest. You would not have to pay off the second until you pay off your first mortgage or sell your home. I’d go back to your big box lender and ask them to do more to cut your payments. You may be eligible for an FHA streamline refinance, which would simply cut your interest rate. Ilyce R. To make a clean start this year, a financially friendly facelift might be what you need. “While home decorating may not seem like a priority this year, there are countless quick and inexpensive do-it-yourself projects that can brighten a home,” says Lisa LaPorta, lead designer and co-host of HGTV’s Designed to Sell. To help make lived-in homes feel new again, LaPorta offers simple tips.
A Clean Start with Color Applying a fresh coat of primer and paint is the easiest way to transform a space with minimal time and money. Save this year’s rich reds and golds for accent pieces like trim, picture frames and pillows. Try painting interior walls with shades of deep taupe, warm grey or soft brown. Commanding Centerpieces for Flair Fill a glass vase with an arrangement of lush red and orange flowers, simple twigs and glass beads or your favorite fruit for a statement. Enchanting Kitchens Won’t Break the Bank New appliances have the greatest impact on kitchen appeal but can be costly. If you’re unable to make a large investment, achieve a similar effect by updating cabinetry with paint.

Warming up the bed this season By Mary Carol Garrity Scripps Howard News Service
When you live in an old house that’s full of drafts, you have to get creative if you want to stay warm in the winter. One of my solutions is to head to bed early, bury myself in blankets and get lost in a good book. If you’d like your bed to be a warm and welcoming cocoon this fall, try some of these tricks.
Toss in a Throw Blanket Since I’m a fan of Sunday naps, I need a warm throw blanket on my bed. This fall I’m transferring the adorable cable-knit throw, which usually adorns my sofa, up to my bed. However, it might get sent back downstairs again soon because I’m thinking of using a Pashmina shawl as a throw blanket instead. Made of cashmere wool, these incredibly soft shawls make fabulous throws because they feel wonderful next to your skin. Get one in an accent color
that will add a pop to the foot of your bed.
fitted sheet so it looks as if it’s been upholstered.
Pick the Perfect Pillows When you spend as many hours reading in bed as I do, you need just the right-sized pillow to support your back and neck. I’ve found my ideal match with Euro shams. No longer just a greatlooking bedding accessory, these large, square pillows will be the hardest-working accents on your bed. If you’re feeling practical, try matelasse cases that you can launder easily.
Feather Your Bed Every fall, I pull out my featherbed topper to place on my mattress. I feel like a princess, floating on clouds of soft feathers. Some of my friends complain that a featherbed topper makes their beds too warm, so if you get hot when you sleep, they may not be for you.
Ditch the Dust Ruffle An increasing number of my customers are saying goodbye to dust ruffles. They don’t like how easy dust ruffles are to step on and tear, or how they tend to get dirty. If you’re of like mind, and if the sides of your bed are beautiful enough to be exposed, you can toss your ruffle, too. Instead, cover your unsightly box spring with a mattress pad and high-quality
Get Colorful If you’re in the mood to redo your bedding, think about adding pumpkin to your color palette. Pumpkin is the hot color this season, and I adore this cheery hue because it goes with just about every accent color imaginable – apple green, navy, cream, even bright pink. When you tackle your new bedding set, re-examine your entire bedroom. Often, this hardworking room is last on our list when it comes to decorating.
One way to cozy up your bed for fall is to add Euro shams to lean against when you read. (SHNS/Courtesy Landon Collis)

COLDWELL BANKER LONGMONT ON TOP OF THE LONGMONT REAL ESTATE MARKET
By Kathleen Hom The Washington Post
Painting is one of the simplest things you can do to reinvigorate a room. But choosing a color can be a daunting, stressful task. Hundreds, sometimes thousands of paint-chip cards blanket hardware stores, making a decision seem like an extraordinary test. After you’ve picked a color come the challenges of coordinating palettes and prepping walls. To help you, we recommend a handful of Web sites that encourage you to take risks with paint and liven up your home.
Colourlovers This Web site (www.colourlovers.com) encourages visitors to combine hues, inspiring a massive range of palettes and patterns to browse through. Registered users can vote on color combinations, become fans of palettes and patterns, leave comments or ask questions in forums. The site can help you decide what shades won’t clash with adjoining rooms or your favorite plum chaise. Colr.org If you’re having trouble meshing colors, try Colr.org. It fragments photos that are posted on the photo-sharing site Flickr or uploaded to the site. These images inspire a color palette, proving that generic snapshots of nature or photos from your last vacation can be excellent sources for color coordination. Photos are fragmented into little color boxes that users can click on to get a larger swatch. You can also randomly create “schemes” or color groupings with a click of the mouse. ConsumerSearch ConsumerSearch (www.consumersearch.com) includes reviews of interior paints under its Home & Garden tab. The site compiles Web reviews from Consumer Reports, DoItYourself.com, Paint Talk and Contractor Talk. You can find out the best-reviewed paints in such categories as coverage, general purpose, budget and zero-VOC, low-odor interior paint. Plus, you can compare prices, see which stores carry the brands and read tips on what to look for when choosing paint. House Beautiful House Beautiful magazine’s Web site (www.housebeautiful .com) includes PaintBrush, a tool for virtually painting rooms. Pick a room from stock photos, including images of kitchens, bathrooms and foyers. Alter the colors of the room’s walls, trim, ceiling and accent space. The colors correspond to those from Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams and Valspar, and the paint numbers are provided. You can also save projects and e-mail them.

Antique News
Table not quite considered antique By Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson Scripps Howard News Service
Dear Helaine and Joe: My family has always referred to this item as the “Hekman table.” We do not know whether the piece is an antique or valuable in any way. Hope you can help. – G.M., Chicago Dear G.M.: These tables were popular in the mid-20th century, particularly from the 1930s to the 1950s, so this item is not technically an antique. We think this piece is known as a “Hekman table” because it has a label in the drawer or because the purchaser remembered the manufacturer’s name. The history of the company is fascinating and, in an extremely tangential way, intersects with a bunch of elves. In 1893, Edsko Hekman moved from the Netherlands to Grand Rapids, Mich., one of the most prolific
furniture-making centers in the United States. During the Panic of 1893, Hekman could not start the furniture company he dreamed of founding. Instead, he had to fall back on his first profession – baking. He sold cookies door-todoor and eventually founded the Hekman Biscuit Co. This firm later became part of the famous Keebler Co., which, of course, is associated with elves making cookies in a hollow tree. Hekman’s dream of opening a furniture factory became a reality owing to his three sons – John, Jelle and Henry – who opened the doors of the Hekman Furniture Co. in 1922. Today, Hekman products can be found in most large, midpriced furniture stores. The piece is generally known as a drum table; its design is loosely based on 18th-century Georgian designs. In this country, Duncan Phyfe popularized the style in

Transplant trees, shrubs in fall for best results By Joe Lamp’l Scripps Howard News Service
Throughout the year, one of the most common questions I get relates to the best time to plant or transplant trees and shrubs. My quick answer is that as long as the ground isn’t frozen, you can plant any time, although you decrease your chances of success substantially if you don’t do it in autumn; no matter where you live, fall is the best time. Even in the warmest regions, the cooler air and warm soil temperatures of fall make the best combination for establishment. Cooler air is kinder to plant foliage, and reduces the chances of an energy-zapping chain reaction throughout the rest of the plant. Another benefit to fall transplanting is that many plants and trees are entering a period of dormancy. With no need to
allocate resources into foliage, plants are now transferring all their energy into roots and storing nutrients and resources for the cool months ahead. By spring, the result should be a well-established root system and plants that are better equipped to handle the upcoming demands of spring and summer. Here are a few additional tips to ensure the success of all your fall transplants. When preparing any hole for an incoming shrub or tree, make the hole two to three times wider than the current root ball, but don’t make it any deeper than the plant was growing in its previous environment. An even better guide with trees is to look for the flare of the trunk near the soil level. In the planting, don’t place the tree to a point where any part of that flare is ultimately covered with soil. I pro-
vide this added bit of guidance because, unfortunately, even nurseries sometimes put plants too deep in the containers. I go one step further by placing transplants in their new environment with up to onethird of the root ball higher than the surrounding soil level. I then taper soil up to cover all the roots and add a generous layer of mulch above that. Newly disturbed soil has a tendency to settle, and plants growing below grade can easily succumb to root rot or disease. In my book it’s always better to plant a tree or shrub slightly high and allow the area to drain than for a plant to sit in a bowl and collect excess water. Contrary to traditional planting methods, new research indicates that you should not amend the hole with additional organic material; plant roots growing in amended soil rarely
venture into harder native soil. The long-term effect is a smaller root system, reduced growth and a less hardy plant. Instead, simply break up the clumps in existing soil and remove the rocks and backfill. Be sure to lightly tamp or hand-pack the soil around plant roots to ensure good soilto-root contact. I add water to the hole after backfilling it halfway. Not only does it provide needed moisture, but the extra water also helps eliminate
air pockets that could otherwise result in dead roots. The final step is to mulch with 3 to 4 inches of organic matter such as shredded leaves, ground bark or straw. Mulch helps retain moisture and keeps soil temperatures moderate. Winter conditions can be dry, so water throughout the winter to prevent soil conditions from becoming too arid – roots are still growing, and soil moisture is essential for proper establishment.

Mesa Yellow is the first hybrid blanket flower with a controlled plant habit and prolific flowering. The 3-inch daisy like flowers and globe shaped seed heads offer a superior presentation of color which continues throughout the summer. Gardeners will be glad to know they can cut the blooms for casual bouquets. The flowers, when left on the plants, will attract butterflies. Judges noted the improved plant habit of Mesa Yellow with mature plants reaching 20 to 22 inches in a full-sun garden location. The neat, mounded plants are adaptable to smaller space gardens or any type of containers. When planted near the inside edge of the container, they will cascade down the container. They are relatively maintenance free. Mesa Yellow plants proved to be wind and rain resistant, meaning the plants recover quickly from severe weather. Mesa Yellow was bred by PanAmerican Seed Co. and blooms two to three weeks earlier than comparisons.
