With the winter chill settled in, there is nothing more comforting than a warm, fuzzy hat or scarf to wrap up in. Longmont company DohmIcebox has been handcrafting wool knit hats for the past 15 years. But what makes them different is their commitment to sustainability, which starts with the company’s line all made on antique knitting machines. Furthermore, the hats are made of woolly yarns produced in strict environmental standards. And to further show their commitment to the environment, they created a collection of upcycled items called Xob where no two items are alike. The pieces and parts of recycled wool are used to make the

fun and funky items in the line, including hats, scarves, pillows, headbands and more. And nothing is left unused at Dohm-Icebox, because the scraps are used to stuff Xob the Recycled Sweater Monkey with the help of individuals from the Center for People with Disabilities, Boulder County. Dohm-Icebox has grown from a small company that sold to sports retailers in the area to a national and international supplier of handcrafted accessories. This line of hats, scarves and accessories make a great gift for anyone on your list. Find them in Longmont at Adorn Home & Gift Gallery and Old Firehouse Art Center, or visit their Web site at www.dohmhats.com for a complete listing of retail stores.

Creative Gifting A little imagination goes far in gift card baskets By Kimberly Crater Longmont Times-Call

Finding the perfect gift for everyone on your holiday list is hard enough. Finding a gift that is not only perfect, but also has that “wow” factor and doesn’t go over budget might as well be impossible. Sisters Erica Eggers and Cassy Potestio, who own Real Deals in Longmont, understand how challenging it can be to find that elusive perfect gift. Real Deals has inexpensive items that are unique and not available in most stores. The perfectly stacked rows of merchandise in many stores can be tough for shoppers to sift through. Deciding how to present the gift can be a larger challenge. At Real Deals they make sure all the items they sell are not

stacked on shelves, but instead displayed in the store how they might be seen in life outside the retail world. They often work with customers to help them create original ideas. While working with customers they get to know shoppers’ personal styles. “We can’t even call them customers, they are more like friends,” Eggers says. To create your own original gift, find small, unique items and combine them with a gift card for a personalized touch. For frenzied shoppers, gift cards are wonderful alternatives and budget savers. For some though, gift cards are too impersonal to give as gifts, especially to friends and family members. Creating a gift basket to accompany a gift card allows you to be creative and give a gift that will have the family talking until next year.

Let the creativity flow in gift basket creation If you need a little inspiration, think about combining a gift card with a more unique item. • For the handymen (or women) in your family, make a bouquet out of tools, like a hammer and screwdrivers. Add a gift card to a home improvement store so they can get exactly what they need for their next big project. • If someone in your family loves decorating and design, try giving a gift card to a home decorating store along with a subscription to an interior design maga-

zine. Try including a piece of home decor, like a large wall clock or decorative mirror, to inspire another great design. • Gift cards to coffee shops are always a hit. So for the early-risers on your Christmas list, add a mug or travel cup with a subscription to their favorite newspaper or magazine to read while they enjoy their fresh-brewed cup. • For the couple who is always too busy with the kids to take time out, give them everything they need for a date night. Combine a gift card to their fa-

vorite restaurant with one to a nearby movie theater, or add tickets to a concert or play. Include a handwritten certificate offering to watch their children for the evening so they can have the entire night to themselves. • The chefs and food lovers topping your list might appreciate a gift card to a grocery store. Create a basket including cooking essentials, like utensils and knives, with a unique kitchen accessory, like handmade stoneware or home decor to give their cooking space some flair.

Blu-ray vs. DVD

Blu-ray disc took top prize in the latest formatting war after edging out high definition-DVD last year. However, many consumers are still wondering what Blu-ray is and how it compares to the DVDs they already own. Blu-ray, started by Sony, is the newest technology in storage discs. People looking to upgrade their home entertainment system are “running” to Bluray, says Dylan Ham, operations senior at Best Buy in Longmont. Blu-ray players play high definition Blu-ray movies and standard DVDs. Deciding whether or not to spend the money on a Blu-ray player can be tough. Blu-ray does have higher quality picture and sound and offers more special features, but for LG Blu-ray player with 1080 output. some that is not always

worth the cost. People who prefer to purchase and own their movies generally opt for a Blu-ray system. However, people who prefer renting their movies usually choose to stick with a standard DVD player or upgrade to an upconverting DVD player, Ham says. Upconverting DVD players fill in pixels to make the image appear more like a Blu-ray image. While the visual quality is better on an upconverting player, it is still lower than Blu-ray. While Blu-ray is considered the highest quality, they are expensive and the prices are not likely to drop soon, even during the holiday season. Blu-ray players can range from $150 for a low-end

The increase in processing speed does create a better picture with more vibrant colors, but those differences are barely noticeable to most people. Standard DVD players are becoming more difficult to find in stores as they are edged out by Blu-ray and upconverting DVD players. However, a standard DVD player should cost between $20 and $40. DVD upconverters typically range between $60 to $100.

Along with the holidays comes indulgence. From rich foods to neglecting that healthy dose of daily exercise, holidays are often primed to lead to rigid New Year’s resolutions. When you’re out shopping for loved ones on your list, keep their health in mind. What if you could give the gift that tastes great or makes the body feel even better? Instead of worrying about what new video game will be the hot commodity this season, give the gift of health and fitness. Shauna Adler, sales associate and (Courtesy Lifetime Fitness) fitness enthusiast, and Mike Rosasco, manager, of Sports Authority in gestions for everyone on your list. Longmont, offered fitness gift sugThese gifts are a good way to jump start the fitness season that often starts in the new year. Here are some of their recommendations: • Heart rate monitors • Pedometers • Yoga kits, blocks and mats • Jump ropes • Kettlebells • Medicine balls • Resistance bands • Treadmills and elipticals • Bosu Ball • Perfect Push-up These are just a few ideas for gifts that are good to give, good to receive and convey hopeful messages of spending more holidays in the future with happier and healthier friends and family. Your healthy gift list might also include healthier holiday foods and snacks. Greg Leidich, general manager at Two Moms in the Raw in Lafayette, believes healthy and organic snacks, such as their sea crackers, are a great way to find a good balance during the holidays. When his wife, Shari Leidich, started the business with his sister and mother in 2006, she was dealing with health issues and wanted to use ingredients

Making Merry

On A Budget By Summer Stair • Photos by Paul Litman Longmont Times-Call

Great gifts under $20

There’s no secret to why half of a person’s Christmas budget is spent on gifts – it makes people feel good to make others happy. For many people, the best part about Christmas is not only being with friends and family, but it’s about seeing the joy on one another’s faces as gifts are opened. Despite Christmas budgets not being as big this year, there are still great gifts to be had. Here are local gift ideas, all under $20, for everyone on your list.

For the Woman in Your Life Kitchen gifts are always popular around the holidays and are almost always a safe bet, says Kirsten Pellicer of Garden Acres Ace Hardware in Longmont. This year, try something a little different and don’t go for the usual pots, pans or blender. Try something out of the ordinary yet still practical. The battery-operated Multipeeler from Zyliss is one such gift and retails for $19.99 at Ace Hardware. If your gift receiver is more of the outdoorsy type, give them something they can use on a daily basis. The Soho Coffee Mug from Trek allows you to take your coffee with you. The added bonus: The mug is designed to fit into a bike bottle cage and retails for $14.98 at Bike & Hike in Longmont.

The multipeeler from Zyliss is available at Ace Hardware.

Give Him the Gift of Ease Everything we buy today is about making things easier and quicker to complete. So why not give him the Auto Wrench from Black and Decker, which retails for $19.99 at Ace Hardware. Fun tools like this make great gifts because people often won’t buy them for themselves, even though they are practical, Pellicer says. Keep with this philosophy and get your man a new bike lock from Trek. The Dreadlocks bike lock allows you to set your own combination so you don’t have to worry about forgetting. It retails for $16.98 at Bike & Hike. Helpful Kid Gifts Discard the doll or toy truck this season and think of gifts that offer practical play. The Cool Tools for Kids from Head Chefs will allow your little one to help out in the kitchen or play on their own. The kitchen utensils are brightly colored, and are decorated with faces,

hands and legs. Each retails for $9.99 at Ace Hardware. Choose from a measuring cup, knife, whisk, stirring spoon, pastry brush, turner, spatula, sifter or measuring spoon. For kids who ride their bikes, help them accessorize with the Universal Ultrabright tail light from SERFAS. Kids will like the bright light associated with this gift, while parents can be reassured their kids are safe. They retail for $11.98 at Bike & Hike. So remember when shopping this holiday season that it is not about how much you spend, but the thought that is put into each and every gift you give this year.

Gifts of

Gold

Choose gifts this season that sparkle

By Kristi Ritter • Photos by Paul Litman Longmont Times-Call

With twinkling lights and sparkles of glitter, the holiday season is full of magic and mystery with lights glowing up and down streets, and shops catching the eyes of passersby with shiny gifts in the window. While all colors and accents come and go, gold has proven to be a popular choice this year in clothing, accessories, jewelry and more. Linda Snyder, owner of Snyder Jewelers in Longmont, says yellow gold has made a return in decorating people’s fingers, necks and wrists. “People want bold and chunky jewelry that is not only beautiful, but functional as well,” she says. Functionality is key with many new selections of jewelry with adjustable necklaces that go from short and stylish to long and slender, all without changing

out the item. Reversible jewelry is another trend making its way into fashion. No longer do people want to carry silver and gold jewelry, they want one piece with both. Today’s jewelry designers are making necklaces, bracelets and earrings that flip from silver to gold easily, cutting down on the number of items people have to travel with or own. But gold isn’t enough for some people who crave something a little different, such is the case with colored gold. Chocolate, green, rose and black gold are made by adding alloys to the gold that

Colored gold is a popular trend in jewelry, such as this braided chain from Snyder Jewelers in yellow and chocolate gold, and far right, the individual necklaces in yellow, green and chocolate gold.

change the appearance for a stunning result in colored golds. While some people seek variations of gold, there are gifts that suit the traditionalists in all of us. Ron R Fine Jewelry in Longmont offers a selection of watches for both men and women, rings, earrings, money clips and more. Owner Ron Hogsett says two-tone jewelry has been especially popular, with both yellow and white gold used in a piece. Gifts of gold go beyond jewelry, however, with fashion accessories for women including handbags and headbands, as well as gold ties for men. Lillians in Longmont offers every woman something from fashion handbags to pashminas to accessories to finish off the look. Even check out the hottest new trend – flat wallets – that make organizing all of those cards and IDs a breeze. Owner Jill Smith says gold and peuter are the most popular sellers for accessories because they go with anything. As for men, gold gifts are numerous at Dillard’s in Longmont, from gold ties in various color tones to numerous other gifts.

For the Kiddos “Wag” By Patrick McDonnel Another beautifully illustrated book by McDonnell, creator of the nationally syndicated comic strip, Mutts. Find out what makes a dog’s tail wag in this sweet dog tribute.

By Daelena Tinnin Longmont Times-Call

The holidays are a great time to curl up with a good movie or an interesting book. Crank up the fireplace, grab a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy these top holiday books for adults, children and the whole family, courtesy Mandy King, marketing and promotions manager at Boulder Bookstore.

“Odd and the Frost Giants” By Neil Gaiman Find out what happens when a boy named Odd goes on a magical adventure with Norse Gods.

“The National Parks” By Dayton Duncan and Ken Burns In this companion volume to the 12-hour PBS series, Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan explore the history of national parks.

“The Lacuna” By Barbara Kingsolver Barbara Kingsolver is one fan favorite and this is her first novel in a couple of years, following her foray into non-fiction, “Animal Vegetable Miracle.”

“Where Men Win Glory” By Jon Krakauer From the bestselling author of “Into the Wild” and “Into Thin Air,” “Where Men Win Glory” is another great from Jon Krakauer. “He peels back the layers on the life of a heroic man and exposes truths about our society,” King says.

“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” and “Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters.” These classics are mashed up with a little zombie and sea monster fun. “Even if you’re not a Jane Austen fan, these books will appeal to your sense of humor,” King says.

“Half Broke Horses” By Jeannette Walls Walls memoir, “The Glass Castle” delighted fans with its raw honesty. “Half Broke Horses” draws on family stories, such as the life of Walls’ fearless grandmother, Lily Smith.

“Spells” By Emily Gravett “Visually exciting, amazingly illustrated and cleverly written,” King says. “Spells” is a story about a frog that finds a book and wants to kiss a princess.

“Magician’s Elephants” By Kate DiCamillo Kate DiCamillo writes brilliantly in this tale about orphan Peter Augustus Duchene, his trip to a fortune teller and his linked future with an elephant.

“Catching Fire” By Suzanne Collins The sequel to Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games” tantalizes readers with more stories of Katniss and Peeta and still leaves more to be told in the final book of the trilogy.

As the wireless revolution continues to dominate our personal and professional lives, a laptop or netbook is a hot gift for those close to you this holiday season. Netbooks were even included in Amazon’s list of top holiday gifts last season and their popularity is only growing. But how do you know which laptop or netbook is best suited for your loved one? With so many options available, it is important to know the different features of each computer, as well as how the owner will be using it. “There is a wide variety of laptops and netbooks available today. Purchasing a new laptop can be daunting and overwhelming, especially when it is a holiday gift. Creating a list of must haves is a good way to start your search,” says Mark Grace, vice president of consumer business of Absolute Software, a company specializing in computer theft recovery, data protection and IT asset management. Absolute Software has developed a list of basic questions to help make choosing a laptop or netbook an easy part of your holiday shopping. • How will the laptop be used? Laptops are becoming more than just the family computer and are being used for movies, photos, gaming and

music. So, before purchasing a laptop, figure out what it will be used for most to determine what features it should include. • What is your budget? The economy is affecting each and every one of us so now, more than ever, it is necessary that you get the most bang for your buck. So, before shopping, identify how much you want to spend and what features you can skimp on to stay within budget. • How durable is the laptop or netbook? It is crucial that your new equipment can hold up in a variety of conditions. It should have a long battery life and an exterior tough enough to handle being carted about. • How much will you be storing on this new device? When purchasing a laptop, think about how much information will be kept on the laptop versus an external hard drive. If the owner is planning to store larger items, such as videos or digital photos, choose a laptop with a larger hard drive. • What accessories will you need? An extra battery for longer use, a discreet laptop bag or an extra power cord could come in handy and will ensure your gift is ready to be used and enjoyed right out of the box.

Something for Everyone Gadget Grands More grandparents are joining the digital age. Help them get online and stay in touch with family by setting up a free family Web site at myfamily .com or familylobby.com. Give them the latest family photos on a digital photo frame, or help them talk to all the grandkids with free video calls through Skype. If their computer doesn’t have a built-in Web cam, you can get one for around $50.

Not sure what to get the gadgetlover in your life? This quick gadget guide will give you the scoop on what to look for so you can spread some holiday cheer.

Mobile Mom

E-book Reader What it is: A small, portable device that lets you download entire books, newspapers and magazines in digital format. Made to mimic ink and paper publications, you can read with ease any time, anywhere. You’ll find a range of prices and services with Sony Reader, Amazon Kindle, Cooler, iRex iLiad and Bookeen Cybook. What to look for: Long battery life and an easy-to-read screen. The reader should be easy to carry and must be readable even in bright sunlight.

Cell Phone Signal Booster What it is: A small electronic device that reduces dropped calls and improves cell phone signal by capturing the stronger signal from the outside and amplifying the signal indoors. What to look for: Make sure the signal booster meets the needs of the intended user. Think about: • How much mobility will they need – will they be working at their desk or within a larger area? • How many phones or devices need signal boosting, one or several? • Where does the reception need to

be improved, indoors or in a vehicle?

Bluetooth Headset What it is: A wireless headset that lets you talk on the phone handsfree. You can find headsets from $20 and up. What to look for: • Make sure the headset runs the same version of Bluetooth that the user’s phone does. • If they wear glasses, look at inear headsets rather than those that go over the ears. • For extra clarity, consider a headset with a boom microphone.

Upgrade mom’s cell phone to a smart phone to help her manage family life with ease. If a smart phone isn’t in the budget, but she still needs a way to connect while on the move, look into a personal mobile e-mail device, such as a Peek Pronto, that lets her text and send e-mails from anywhere.

Road Warrior Know someone who’s on the road all the time? Make their drive easier with a GPS, more pleasant with a satellite radio subscription or safer with hands-free phone accessories.

Fill your home with candles for the holidays Family Features

Nothing captures the warmth of the holidays quite like the gentle glow of candlelight. This season, set the mood with delicious holiday scents and decorations by making fragrant candles your centerpiece. Mom and lifestyle expert Amy Clark says, “I love adding candles to my mantle or dining room table to create a cozy atmosphere.” Clark offers up simple tips to help you light up your home for the holidays with well-designed displays at an affordable price.

Choose a Festive Space Holiday centerpieces on the dining room table are a beautiful tradition. But don’t limit your creativity to just one place, including: • Mantle • Inside of the fireplace or on the hearth • Entry table • Bathroom • Kitchen A good rule of thumb is to take up no

more than one-third of a table with your display. This will leave room for people to set down items without bumping into the display.

Cover Your Bases For surfaces that need to be protected from candle oils, heat and wax, choose an interesting base for the display. Trays, beveled mirrors and candle plates are often used. Candle Groupings Many designers believe that odd-numbered groupings are more pleasing to the eye than even-numbered ones. So gather candles in groups of three, five or seven. Creative Touches You don’t need to buy a lot of extras to make an attractive display. Look through what you already have to get inspired. With a little imagination, you can create holiday displays that make you feel a little merrier all season long. HG2-138250

Family Fun With

Three playful takes on a holiday favorite

Gingerbread

Family Features

Sweet and slightly spicy, the taste of ginger has a way of stirring up fond memories of the holiday season. Imagine the warm aroma of gingerbread, slip back into childhood and remember fun-filled family gatherings in the kitchen. Embrace this classic flavor by baking up some treats this year. With one basic gingerbread dough recipe, two festive cookie variations are just a mixing bowl away. Whether the classic gingerbread man or a fun new interpretation inspired by the introduction of a chocolate “drop,” these flavor-packed treats merit a place in tomorrow’s memories of this holiday season. Gingerbread inspires whimsical creations for the entire family, and it’s easy to make this favorite sweet the centerpiece of any holiday gathering. The McCormick Kitchens suggest enlisting helpers of all ages to help mix and measure recipe ingredients

and lend a hand with the decorating, for a fun holiday activity. To get started, use the basic dough recipe to roll out a batch of Gingerbread Men. After baking, let the kids help pipe on simple vanilla frosting and decorate with traditional cinna-

Top 5 Children Movies By Daelena Tinnin

December 6, 2009

Purchase toys with lasting power

Longmont Times-Call Article Resource Association

The holidays are a great time to curl up with a good movie. Grab a cup of hot chocolate and enjoy these movie picks for children, courtesy Colette Dervan, owner of Video Vault in Longmont.

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” Releasing Dec. 8. The sixth installment of the Harry Potter series finds Harry, Ron and Hermoine finding love and danger.

“G-Force” Releasing Dec. 15. Enjoy a Disney family comedy with a highly trained team of guinea pigs on a quest to save the world after the FBI shuts their unit down.

“Up” Bring one of the biggest kid movies of the year home and bond with 78-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen and 8-year-old wilderness explorer Russell on their journey to a lost and magical world.

“Night of the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian” The hilarious comedy sequel features more living history as Larry Daley’s, night time friends are being retired to the archives of the Smithsonian Institute. “Santa Buddies” Follow the buddies to the North Pole as they try to save the spirit of Christmas and bring back the real meaning of the holiday around the world.

With family budgets a little tighter this year, many parents may be taking a closer look at their children’s toy lists. You still want to put smiles on their faces and build holiday memories, but you also want to make wise choices with lasting value. Play is important to your child’s development. Toys add magic and excitement to learning – about life, about how things work and about how to get along with others. And of course, as children grow, their skills and needs are continually changing. So keep that holiday wish list, but make sure it works hard for both you and your children. Take a closer look at the toys your child has requested or that you are considering. Will the toy allow your child to experience long-lasting playtime or a more complete play experience? Are there toys on the list that your kids will enjoy coming back to again and again – or will they lose interest after the first time they play with them? If you have several children, can the toys be enjoyed by siblings – or even the whole family? Child development expert Dr. Kathleen Alfano has several suggestions. Alfano is senior director of Child Research at Fisher-Price. “Toys don’t have to be expensive to benefit a child,” she says. “But playtime is an opportunity to promote every aspect of development, fostering physical, social,

emotional, language, cognitive and imaginative skills. Some toys develop all of these in an integrated way, while others focus on one or a few.” Alfano suggests looking for toys that enhance skills in different areas: • Solo play – helps children learn about themselves, fostering self-esteem, self-direction and values. With Splatster, a new plug and play from Fisher-Price, children can explore their creative sides on their own by creating mess-free virtual masterpieces on

their TV. • Team work – helps them practice social skills such as sharing, negotiating and cooperating with others. • Imagination – stimulates and enhances creativity and imagination, providing a rich resource for language development and social competence. • Physical activity and motor skills – promotes movement, improving eye-hand coordination and balance while increasing strength and agility.

tle story of “The Night Before Christmas” is based on Clement C. Get your packages safely home for the holidays Family Features

Tips on Shipping

With families spread out all over the country, shipping holiday gifts to loved ones is a part of the season’s traditions. And while Santa has done an admirable job of delivering holiday cheer for many seasons, he often gets an assist from helpers like Bill Yelle, a UPS driver for more than 16 years. “I might not have a long white beard and wear a bright red suit,” says Yelle. “But it’s always fun to see the smile on a customer’s face when I arrive with packages during the holidays.” To help your special gifts arrive intact and on time, there are a few simple things you can do.

Use the Right Packing Materials Use what the professionals use – sturdy, corrugated boxes, foam packaging peanuts and bubble pack – to protect your gifts. Leave enough space between items in the box, and wrap individual items with double cushioning if necessary. Allow at least 2 inches on all sides of the items being packed, including the bottom and the top. Place the item in the center of the box and fill the remaining space with additional packaging material. Check With the Experts If you have fragile or unusually shaped items to ship, or you just don’t have the time to get your packing and shipping done, it can pay to turn to the professionals. “I love this time of year,” says The UPS Store owner Mary Hart. “We put so much effort into helping our customers

ship their holiday gifts that we share their sense of excitement. We firmly believe the same care should go into shipping gifts as into selecting them.” For the do-it-yourselfers, Hart offers these simple tips: • Hart has had to perform a package intervention or two during her 25 years in the business. “People should never be embarrassed to ask for help,” she says. “We’re specially trained and certified packing professionals. We can handle any shipping job.” • One other essential thing to do – be an early bird. Waiting too long to ship packages can jeopardize their timely arrival and cost you a lot more money. Having to ship items via air takes a lot more out of your wallet, so plan ahead.

• Include an address label on the inside of the package with both the destination and return addresses. • Use a shipping option with a tracking number. • Take batteries out of gifts before shipping. • Don’t wrap boxes in brown paper or tie them with strings. • Don’t use materials like newspaper or real popcorn to cushion items. • Don’t use old boxes or gift boxes for shipping items. • Don’t use duct tape, masking tape or cellophane tape to seal packages. • Don’t ship perfume or cologne since they are considered hazardous materials.
