To sharpen the blade, you need a vise to keep it in place, a pair of gloves so you won’t get metal chards under the skin and a mill bastard file. Lay the file almost parallel to the blade of the shovel. Put weight on the outer edge. Pull it through and lift. Go one way. File the entire blade. To polish the blade of the shovel, use a soft cloth with lubricating oil to prevent rust. While you’re polishing, don’t forget the handle. Sofa
Style
Discover the perfect fit for you, your room By Mary Carol Garrity Scripps Howard News Service
If you’re like me, your sofa is such an important part of your daily life that when it’s time to get a new one, it’s like adding a new member to your family. And just like family members, sofas have definite personalities. Here are some tips for picking the perfect one for your home.
Size It Up Interior designers like to argue about whether it’s more important for a sofa to fit the scale of your room or the contours of your body. In my opinion, you need one that does both, because in the long run, you won’t be happy with a sofa that isn’t the perfect proportion for your room or for your posterior. To make sure your sofa suits the space, before you shop, measure your room and make note of the size and scale of additional furniture you will need to work around. Then, as you shop, forget your inhibitions and flop down on the sofas just like you would at home. Your body will tell you in a flash if the sofa is a fit. Pick the Right Parts Just like people, sofas have backs, arms, seats and legs. And if you’re like most of my customers, you will have

a strong preference on each facet of your sofa’s anatomy. First, pick a back that suits your taste and touch. If you want a formal, tailored look, check out a tight back design, where the back is upholstered and has no removable cushions. If you want a sofa that’s more comfortable and casual, you might prefer a loose-back sofa that’s covered with cushions or pillows. Next, consider the arms. The most common style is a rolled arm that curves outward – an ideal pick for those who like to nap on the sofa. If you’re looking for a more modern look, however, you might prefer a crisp, square arm. As important as arm shape is arm height. How high do you want your sofa’s arm to come? Third, decide whether you’d like your sofa to have a cushioned, bench or tight seat. Cushioned seats consist of separate cushions that fit snugly together, and they are a great option if
you want to remove the covers for laundering. A bench seat is one large cushion that spans the entire length of the sofa. Tight seats are built into the frame of the sofa and cannot be removed. They are usually firmer and more formal in appearance. Finally, look at the sofa’s legs. Do you want a straight, modern leg or a more traditional look, like curved legs on castors? Or would you rather cover the legs with a skirt featuring kick, inverted, button or box pleats?
Superb Style If you’re overwhelmed by the dizzying selection of sofa styles, start by checking out a few of my favorites. The English or Club sofa was my pick for my own living room. This timeless style features slightly rounded arms set back from the rolled back. You can dress this sofa up or down simply by changing your accent pillows. If you like sofas with high arms, the

Knole style may be just right for you. This mainstay of the English country look has a straight, high back and angled arms. Traditional models feature finials wrapped in cords at the juncture of the back and arms. If I had a formal library, I’d get a Chesterfield sofa in a heartbeat. Usually upholstered in leather, Chesterfields feature tufted backs, high rolled arms and tight seats. My customers can’t get enough of the traditional Bridgewater sofa, with its low, rolled arms and cushioned back and seat. Unassuming and ageless, this beloved style fits most people’s lifestyles and bodies. Check out the Camelback style, with its tight, arching back and high rolled arms, for a charming look that harkens back to the 18th century. The Lawson, with its low, square back and either square or rolled arms, is boxy and hip – an ideal choice for a contemporary or modern home.

Rocks add unique structural elements to any yard By Joel M. Lerner, APLD Special to The Washington Post
Not so long ago, people wanted to get rid of rocks in their yards. Now they often request them as part of the trend toward more naturallooking gardens. Rocks are the easiest sculptural elements to incorporate into a garden to create a natural-looking landscape. They add color, contrast and interest; require no maintenance; and provide a bit of surprise. They fill another need, too – security barriers. Rocks and plantings strategically placed will keep even the smallest of vehicles from harming public and private buildings. Now is the perfect time to design and place landscape stones. Arrange them around early bulbs and plants that are just breaking dormancy. That way, you can see the “bones” of the landscape and know where your landscape rocks will fit best. Rocks come in every size, from giant Stonehenge-like slabs to tiny pebbles the size of peas. They come in a natural kaleidoscope of colors, including brown, tan, red, pink, blue, green, white, black and gray. The big issue with rocks is that they can weigh a ton – really. You will need equipment and assistance to transport and place them. Positioning is important, so everyone involved needs to be patient. Like other large, heavy objects, specimen rocks can be expensive. And the effort to transport them might limit your use of ornamental rocks in the landscape. However, nature has

Utilize your small yard Article Resource Association
A baby boomer couple downsizing, a working professional’s downtown city condo, and a young family’s starter home in a metro suburb – the trend of people moving to smaller homes with smaller yards continues to grow. If you are one of them, how do you make the most out of your small outdoor green space? With the right tools and strategies, you’ll find the possibilities are endless. “When people move to smaller homes, they want to make the most of the green space they have,” says Ashton Ritchie, lawn expert and master gardener for Scotts. “They still want that outdoor retreat after a stressful day.” Ritchie says that smaller yards can be some of the most
stunning because they require less time and homeowners can focus more on what they really enjoy. “The difference is with a small green space, it’s not an overwhelming full-time job. I’ve seen many beautiful small yards with intensive gardening and great landscaping.” Here are Ritchie’s tips for getting the most out of small outdoor green spaces.
Make It Your Own If you want to create an outdoor retreat, a small yard holds many possibilities. Your priority should be deciding how you are going to use your yard. If you enjoy cooking, have much of your space dedicated to a great vegetable and herb garden. If you want to use your space to unwind at the end of the day, create an outdoor room
with relaxation elements. If you plan to use your small yard as an additional space for entertainment, incorporate sitting space and tables for overflow from the house.
Use Contrast to your Advantage. The nice thing about a small lawn is the contrast you can easily achieve in the foliage. Lush green grass is the foundation that contrasts with the colors and textures of other plants. Keep your lawn vibrant and consider planting flowers, shrubbery or an herb garden. The contrast in these elements provides a visual frame that is
appealing.
Fertilize You Lawn Green grass provides us with a soothing, relaxing feeling. But the No. 1 problem with grass is it ends up malnourished and starves. Therefore it’s important to fertilize four to five times a year so you get strong root and top growth. Outdoor Decor Adds Appeal Consider adding elements to your yard that interject your personal style. For example, adding a water feature is a great idea that is visually appealing plus it adds a water sound that creates a relaxing atmosphere.
You could also add a bird feeding station to attract wildlife. If room is limited, consider a small hummingbird feeder.
Use Space-Saving Furniture Small spaces do not call for big and bulky outdoor furniture. Benches can be a good option because they seat multiple people and also take up less space. Look for pieces that are multifunctional like a bench or table that also opens up to provide storage space. Finally, make sure furniture can withstand temperatures all year long since it probably won’t be stored in a different location.

My foothill soil eats rototillers for breakfast. Between the heavy clay and rocks, the soil has either ripped out the transmission or broken the tines of all but the most expensive hard-core tillers. In summer, the rocks heat up, baking plant roots from below. We can go without rain from May to November, challenging every plant not on a sprinkler system. This illustrates the plight of folks in the rugged terrain of Western mountain ranges, where the combination of problem soils and arid climate challenges all but the super-adapted native plants. Catalogs from New England, books by English gardeners and expert advice from east of the Mississippi simply fail to acknowledge how challenging the Intermountain West can be. And because the Western natives for landscaping are so difficult to maintain in pots, the average garden center is unlikely to carry them. The hardest part of growing Western natives is finding the plants to buy. Most retailers shy away from them because they are hard keepers. Water at the wrong time or lack of it quickly spells their demise. Western natives have become a real specialty, and the growers who have mastered them are the best place to order locally. But if there is no suitable grower nearby, you must go online. Two well-established online plant retailers offer a fabulous selection of Western native plants. Among these are coveted perennials, shrubs, vines, grasses and even trees. High Country Gardens is without question the best perennial source. It is headquartered in Santa Fe, N.M. Those at this business know something about the rocky high desert, with its blistering summers and bone-chilling winters. They get what gravelly soil really means. The High Country Gardens catalog is like a book on the best native perennials for gardens. It offers the greatest range of truly cold-hardy selections of penstemon and salvia – the species and their more contemporary hybrids. The way High Country Gardens presents and groups the plants is inspiring, taking the guesswork out of planting compositions. Because many companion plants from arid eastern Asia and the Mediterranean ask for similar conditions as our Western natives, this catalog carries them and shows you how to mix and match. And there is no better resource for creating hummingbird gardens. For a good range of natives exclusive to the Intermountain West, try Rugged Country Plants. This
From top to bottom: This south-facing rocky cliff studded with lupine and monkeyflower illustrates Western natives that require minimally fertile soil. Nearly all penstemon species are native to the arid Western states, where they thrive under trying conditions. I heard from a homeowner this week who was told by her lender to make her fifth month of temporary payments because the lender just can’t get to the paperwork. I heard from another borrower who began the loan modification process eight months ago and whose loan has only now been modified. Most borrowers have no idea if the process they have gone into will count against their credit history and credit score and don’t know whether the modification will help them. Worse, they don’t know if someone will forget they’re in the temporary program and never send them the finalized paperwork. A highly placed source in the Treasury Department said homeowners in this situation should only start to worry when they receive a foreclosure notice. “If your lender tells you to keep making temporary loan modification payments, and you haven’t received a foreclosure notice or any other indication that something’s wrong, then that’s what you should do,” said the source, who asked not to be named because his

Organize the family room These simple tips for organizing your main gathering space will put the family back in your family room.
Welcome the Wastebasket If trash tends to accumulate in the family room, adding a wastebasket might cut down on clutter. Keep Flat Surfaces Clutter-free The family room is often more cluttered because it’s a central gathering place in the house. A two-drawer lateral file will help. Make a quick sweep of all flat surfaces by piling papers in a bin, then sorting and purging as necessary. Take a vow, and get your family to follow it, to put papers in files rather than on the coffee table. – HGTV

Bathroom updates on a budget Article Resource Association
Want to wake up your tired bathroom, but think the price tag might be out of your budget? Don’t be so sure. Remodeling activity may be down, but it’s not out, especially in the bathroom. In fact, the bathroom topped the list of rooms for renovations, according to a recent Consumer Reports survey. Fortunately, there are many simple updates and unique and affordable products that can give your bath a customdesigned look on a bare minimum budget.
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall With 30 percent of homes having at least one plate glass bathroom mirror, why not create a focal point in the bath by adding a mirror frame? For approximately $250, products such as Mirrorscapes Mirror Frames from Moen offer a variety of five styles of customizable frames ranging from classic elegance to modern sophistication and come in a wide variety of metallic and wood finishes. The innovative system is available for purchase online (www.buymirrorscapes .com) to help even a novice do-ityourselfer order the correct pieces with the mirror’s dimensions. Freshen Up Don’t underestimate the power of a good coat of paint for your bathroom. A gallon of quality paint costs approximately $20 and is a great way to add some color, freshen up the walls or
There are many simple updates and unique and affordable products that can give your bath a custom-designed look on a bare minimum budget. help pull the room together. And today, most paint manufacturers offer non-toxic paints with low volatile organic compounds (VOCs), like Glidden’s Evermore interior paint, to reduce gaseous pollutants in your home. These paints are not only healthier for you, your family and the environment, but they are vibrant and durable, as well.
Eco-Fabulous Faucets Until now, eco-friendly options have been less than trendy. Fortunately for environmentallyconscious homeowners, you can swap your faucet to save water and update the look of your bathroom with the latest designs. Installing a new lavatory faucet with a water-saving aerator, such as one from the Banbury bathroom collection from Moen, allows water to flow at 1.5 gallons
per minute and reduces water usage by up to 32 percent.
Maximize Shower Space Most homeowners want to make their bathroom larger and enhance their shower. By installing a curved shower rod you can accomplish both goals and feel like you have an oversized, lavish shower without adding any square footage. Plus, it’s an affordable solution that provides up to seven-and-a-half inches of elbow room while adding terrific style and visual appeal. Curved shower rods are available in both fixed and adjustable lengths that offer easy installation and adjust to fit enclosures from 54- to 72-inches wide. Quick Fixes Wish you could replace your bathroom cabinets but don’t have the extra funds? One budgetfriendly, quick fix is to replace the hardware on your cabinets and doors. Not only is it a simple, yet effective, bathroom remodeling update, but it will make a huge difference in giving your space a new look. Final Finishes To help complete your budgetfriendly bathroom renovation, bring in the finishing touches that make all the difference in a small space. Adorn your new accessories and curved shower rod with high-quality linens, such as a new shower curtain. Add fresh flowers; framed, personal pictures; candles; or a lamp for a decorative touch.

A penny for your thoughts By Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson
COLDWELL BANKER LONGMONT ON TOP OF THE LONGMONT REAL ESTATE MARKET
Scripps Howard News Service
Dear Helaine and Joe: I am enclosing photos of a coin (with an American Indian holding a bow and arrow on one side). I have owned it for more than 25 years, and for some reason, I’ve held onto it because I wonder if it might be valuable. – B.J.D. Dear B.J.D.: We answer this question with great trepidation for two reasons: 1) the picture is so poor that it is difficult to see the details on the coin; and 2) it is impossible to tell whether or not this is a re-strike without seeing the piece in person. During the period of the American Confederation – between the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the founding of the U.S. Mint in 1792 – a number of states established mints to make coins. In October 1786, Massachusetts approved an “Act for establishing a Mint for the coinage of Gold, Silver and Copper.” No gold or silver coins were made, but in 1787 and 1788, copper cents and half cents were produced, all with the image of an American Indian holding a bow and arrow on one side and an eagle with olive branches and arrow clutched in its talons on the other. We are not even going to suggest a value for this coin because we cannot ascertain the condition, when it was made or by whom. B.J.D. needs to take this piece to a specialist for further evaluation. But its insurance-replacement value is almost certainly less than $1,000, and probably less than $500.

Home prices finally on the rise in some areas bankrate.com
30.6 percent increase in home values year over year.
Home prices rose across a large swath of the country during the second quarter, adding to the growing list of signs that the housing market has stabilized. Out of 155 markets included in the survey, 125 showed median price increases compared to the first quarter of this year. Overall, the National Association of Realtors reports a nearly 4 percent rise in the median sales price for single family homes since the first quarter of the year, from $167,300 to $174,100. In addition, several distressed markets are getting some much needed relief from the quarterly hammering they’ve been taking since the housing market peaked in the second quarter of 2006. Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Miami Beach, Fla., actually saw a 0.7 percent increase in home prices, breaking a losing streak going all the way back to the first quarter of 2007. Other markets that weren’t as hard hit are showing signs of life, as well. The Davenport-Moline-Rock Island area of Iowa and Illinois showed an impressive

fact, 39 states showed an increase in sales over the first quarter, including Idaho (67.5 percent), Hawaii (24.2 percent), New York (22.3 percent) and Wisconsin (21.7 percent). “With low interest rates, lower home prices and a first-time buyer tax credit, we’ve been seeing healthy increases in home sales, which are a hopeful sign for the economy,” says NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun in a statement. Don’t get too excited, though. Home prices nationwide are still down 15.6 percent year over year, and 23.4 percent since the housing bubble peaked in 2006. Of the 155 metropolitan areas surveyed, 129 reported lower median existing single-family home prices compared to the second quarter of 2008; just 26 showed price gains. Also, the rise in sales traffic continues to be driven in part by foreclosures and short sales, which accounted for 36 percent of transactions in the second quarter, according to NAR. For the third straight quarter, the Cape Coral-Fort Myers area of south-
west Florida recorded the biggest slump, falling 52.8 percent year-overyear. Since 2006, median prices in the region have taken a nose dive, plummeting from $268,200 to $84,000.
