Decrease your home’s carbon footprint Article Resource Association
Let’s face it, the Earth needs our help and families everywhere are looking for ways to help out. Recycling, driving less and bringing reusable bags to the grocery stores are great ways to reduce your family’s carbon footprint, but did you know there are things you can do to reduce the impact your home has on the environment, not to mention your wallet? Hannah Keeley, lifestyle expert and host of the PBS program “Hannah, Help Me!” offers energy efficiency tips that can yield big returns for your home, your budget and the Earth.
Fill in the Cracks Never underestimate the power of weatherproofing your home. Check all windows and doors for drafty areas. Caulking holes and cracks will keep your home from losing heat. Or consider replacing your existing doors with more energy-efficient Fiberglas options. Therma-Tru Fiberglas doors offer five times the insulation value of wood, which will do a world of good in creating a more energy-efficient home. Use Less A seemingly obvious solution is to simply use less energy. Raising your thermostat a few degrees during the spring and summer months translates into big sav-
ings in both energy usage and utility bills. A programmable thermostat will automatically adjust your thermostat throughout the day, helping to control the temperature of your home. Lighting accounts for almost 20 percent of the average homeowner’s monthly electric bill, but many people overlook this key opportunity to save energy and money. To reduce lighting bills, homeowners can choose lighting controls from Lutron Electronics. An incandescent bulb dimmed by 25 percent will use 25 percent less electricity and last four times longer than a bulb that has not been dimmed.
Consider a Dual-Fuel System Installing a part-electric, part-gas hybrid heating and cooling system provides more control over your home’s energy usage by automatically sensing and operating in the most economical mode. For example, as outdoor temperature increases throughout the day, the Heritage Hybrid comfort system from American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning will use an electric heat pump to efficiently cool your indoor air. When the weather turns cooler and heating with natural gas becomes more efficient, the furnace takes over. With a hybrid comfort system, you can save some serious cash – even when confronted with unpredictable utility costs.
Raising your thermostat a few degrees during the spring and summer months translates into big savings. (ARA)
Make Smarter Choices Choosing the right home appliances is vital, as well. No matter which room of the house we’re talking about an outdated or inefficient unit can drain your bank account and increase carbon emissions. To combat this, look for Energy Star certified appliances. That way you know you’re getting the most energy efficient products available. 29-130411

Fall containers overflow with color
Carol O’Meara Colorado State University Extension
African daisies (Brian Smith/Times Call)
August is rolling in, and with it, the time to turn our thoughts to fall containers. Though that splash of color near your doorstep looks good now, when summer wanes and temperatures cool, a new look is in order for the changing season. Shopping for plants should be on your August to-do list, when fall bedding plants make their way into nurseries and garden centers. Look for perennials to perk up your pots, overwintering them with a blanket of mulch in a protected location. Complete the groupings with a few annuals and you’ve got a porch pickme-up that will dazzle any guest who comes to your door. Planted in August, containers have time to fill out and look their best in time for fall. Not all plants can take the frost; look for those with bold colors and a tough disposition. Here’s a list of a few that caught my eye. For an outstanding fall display, look for coral bells (Heuchera) with leaves in purples, amber, chartreuse and frosted green. Easy to grow in containers, coral bells add texture and color to the pot. Every year new colors hit the market, making this one of the best choices for designer containers in festive autumn shades. A tender perennial to consider is efanthia (Euphorbia amygdaloides hybrid), a thriller in containers that turns green and burgundy as temperatures cool down. The narrow evergreen leaves look perfect combined with the gold and orange of crème brulee heuchera and toffee twist sedge (Carex flagellifera).

The tiny, petunia-like bells of calibrachoa are loaded with blossoms throughout fall, making your container a cheerful welcome for any passersby. Stems of this beauty trail over the pot’s edges and lift up through other plants, giving their blossoms a chance to pop out of all parts of the container without smothering its neighbors. Match this with plants that like drier conditions, such as ajuga or euphorbia – calibrachoas are prone to root rot in constantly moist soil. One of my favorites is the African daisy (Osteospermum) because when the weather cools, their blooms return in a spectacular autumn show. Blue accented eyes pair nicely with purple or blue-toned petunias, verbena, nemesias or calibrachoas. Use verbena or calibrachoa to highlight blue eyes, then match the petals to strongly colored foliage of heucheras or sedums. A bit of a bully in beds and borders, bugleweed (Ajuga reptans) can do well in containers where its leaves can grow under other plants, forming a visual platform for other, brightly colored plants. As an alternative to more common trailing plants, let ajuga spill over pots where it will soften the edges. For a dark purple backdrop, the variety mahogany is your choice, but designers like burgundy glow for its varying tones of pink, white and green. Stonecrop (Sedum spp.) fills the pot with a succulent look, and many turn lovely shades of

contrasting colors after frost has nipped them. Boldly burgundy garnet brocade provides a deep, rich tone but if you’re looking for a spiller with light, chartreuse-gold, pick angelina. Strawflowers (Bracteantha bracteata) are a perfect fall flower, adding a papery, spiked pinwheel to groupings. As a bonus, it makes a lovely cut flower for bouquets. This drought tolerant plant is ideal in the wet-then-dry conditions of container plantings. At 14-inches tall, it is best used as a filler in the center of the display. With a cheerful yellow eye punctuating the bloom, strawflowers are easy to pair with complimentary fall colors. Look for them in bronze, gold, orange and white. Mix and match your plants or ask your garden center staff to help you with pairings. For more gardening tips, check out my blog at gardeningafterfive.wordpress.com. Versatile retaining walls are a do-it-yourselfer’s best friend Article Resource Association
Segmental retaining wall systems are one of the most versatile tools available to the do-ityourself landscaper. Besides traditional walls designed to hold back soil, these innovative systems also can be used to build a whole array of landscaping features. “Fire pits, outdoor kitchens, seat walls, stairs, columns, tables, even plantable walls that become a part of the landscape are possible for homeowners willing to invest a little creativity and sweat equity in their yard,” says Shannon McGregor of Patio Town, a Minnesota landscape supplies retailer. Imagine yourself entertaining guests around a built-in grill in your backyard. Using a retaining wall system you can create a freestanding kitchen island wrapped around a grill and refrigerator and topped with a granite slab. One of the most popular backyard features for do-ityourself landscapers is a fire pit surrounded by a patio and seat walls made from retaining wall units. Several courses of pavers may be used to encircle the fire ring. The seat walls are simply freestanding walls built at an appropriate sitting height.
These may be capped with bullnose pavers for added comfort. Freestanding columns constructed from split wall units stacked and glued in a foursquare pattern make an attractive landscape feature that can be used to perform a variety of functions. Standing alone at the end of a driveway or on either end of a freestanding wall, columns can be finished with natural or cast stone caps. Retaining wall units are stacked in tiers to make the stair’s base pedestal. Stair treads are made from wall cap units, pavers or precast treads. The stairs can be fully inset into a wall or exposed on one or both sides. “These are kind of like the building blocks of landscaping. You can do almost anything with them,” says Austin Keay, owner of AKeay Landscaping in North Branch, Minn. “Hot tub enclosures, raised paver or natural stone patios, mail box stands – we’ve done it all.” Some homeowners prefer the look of greenery to hardscaping but still need a high-performance retaining wall. The new Versa-Green plantable wall system by Versa-Lok gives them the best of both worlds.
Most versatile retaining wall systems can build stairs, freestanding walls and columns using the same product. Solid retaining wall units can be easily cut to fit a grill or refrigerator and topped with a nice stone slab. (ARA)
“Versa-Green is a natural option in situations where significant soil retention is required in a wall but visibility of the wall isn’t wanted,” says McGregor. “Plantings in each individual wall unit grow up to conceal the courses above or hang down to cover the wall below. Eventually, the wall appears to grow right into the landscape,
much like a vertical garden. The result is a functional wall that becomes a living part of your landscape.” Working with segmental retaining wall systems doesn’t require a lot of expensive tools. Those that may be needed can be rented on a daily basis or your supplier may have them available.

“Investing in landscaping is a sure way to add value to your home,” McGregor says. “That, coupled with an increasing trend toward entertaining at home, make segmental retaining wall systems an appealing solution for the do-ityourselfer with a bit of imagination.”

Spruce up summer cabinetry Article Resource Association
With the dreary shadow of the economy looming, what better way to cheer your family’s mood r than by incorporating a creative color palette into your living room, bathroom or home office? With Americans spending more time at home these days, many are investing in home upgrades. Take a cue from Mother Nature and bring in functional and affordable cabinetry in surprising colors. Designers are reporting increased demand from consumers for cabinets with painted finishes, according to the Research Institute for Cooking and Kitchen Intelligence. Cabinet manufacturers are expanding finish op-
tions beyond the traditional brown and reddish tones to include bright and relaxing hues that create a summer retreat within your own home. For example, Diamond Cabinets recently introduced several new cabinet finishes to its Inspired Collection, including a sunny, buttery yellow called Honeysuckle; a lagoon blue appropriately dubbed Oasis; a chameleon-like neutral, Portobello and Tidal Mist, which is reminiscent of foggy, ocean-front summer mornings. Finishes from the Inspired Collection are also available with an heirloom technique, which creates a worn look around the cabinet edges, giving them a vintage feeling. The key is to have fun when incorporating a bright palette into your home. Pair colorful finishes with modern dark wood cabinetry to create a look that will be fresh for years.
Sleek, versatile storage The open, airy personality summer evokes can be easily mimicked throughout the home. For instance, an x-shaped wine cabinet is ideal for clearing bottles of your favorite summer wine selections off high-demand counter space. Its fluid design makes storing bottles of varying sizes a breeze. The x-shaped cabinet can be put to good use in other rooms of your home as well. Use it to neatly tuck away rolled-up towels in your
bathroom; in your home office to store stationary or other small items; or in a playroom where it creates a compact home for children’s toys. Whatever your use, the sleek, open storage allows your personality to peek out without making your home look cluttered. While you may enjoy quiet summer evenings listening to rustling tree branches and singing cicadas, you may feel the urge to grab your favorite summer tunes to liven up an afternoon barbeque. Find tunes easily with a smart CD/DVD rollout insert cabinet, which allows you to smartly store your summertime favorites. Incorporating cabinetry with playful colors and smart design into your home is a sure-fire way to invite the ease and excitement of summer living into your family’s life all year-round.

Living room redesign gets couple back in the game Oliver and Mirjana met while playing basketball in college. Many games and many years later, they found themselves married, with two kids, in a suburban townhouse. The house was new when they bought it, and instead of going for any upgrades, they decided to stick with the builder’s finishes. But after living there for eight years, they started to get tired of their beige surroundings – particularly the living room. The room was boring and bland, and didn’t have enough functional space for entertaining friends and family (not to mention the whole gang after shooting hoops). Longing for a vibrant, warm and multifunctional living/family room, they called me in to see if I could get them back in the game, and take a shot at turning their ordinary space into something extraordinary. First, I got rid of the beige. I wanted a vibrant color scheme so I searched high and low and finally found it in a spectacular glass-andmarble mosaic tile. Since the tile (comprised of brown, gold, Candice Olson cream and gray HGTV tones) was so beautiful, I decided to use it to create a real contemporary wow factor in the room: a new, elevated fireplace. I covered it from floor to ceiling in the tile and added a gas insert in the middle, which adds both visual and physical warmth to the room. The tiles created the perfect jumpingoff point for my entire color scheme. I turned the beige walls into bold charcoal, ripped up the neutral carpet and put down rich hardwood and tore down the washed-out drapes and replaced them with copper silk panels and woven blinds. I then started filling up the room with furniture and finishes. Oliver and Mirjana wanted to keep their piano, but everything else was sent packing. Along one wall, I put an 11-foot, L-shaped sofa in an earthy gray microfiber, with a lot of throw pillows in striped and floral
patterns, and two wooden side tables. In this same seating area, I added two creamy lounge chairs and a high, round table, so there will be a lot of elbowroom for guests. Across from the sofa, I updated the room’s existing cabinetry to look like a large built-in unit by adding creamy paint, new trim, a few mirrors and glass shelving. This new unit was the perfect place to showcase artwork and accessories – and a flat-screen television (for watching basketball games, of course). To help brighten up the space, I installed recessed lighting, mono-point spotlights and two super-stylish drum pendants with organza shades above the two side tables. After some final accents, including a wooden coffee table, a beautiful area rug and striking pieces of art, the room was complete. By mixing luxurious colors, warm fabrics and stylish furnishings and fin-
ishes, I turned Oliver and Mirjana’s boring, beige living room into a beautiful, comfortable space where they can kick back with family, friends – or a basketball team or two. Now that’s what I call a slam-dunk. And that’s divine. Interior decorator Candice Olson is host of HGTV’s “Divine Design.” For more ideas, information and show times visit www.HGTV.com or www .divinedesign.tv.

Enhance outdoor living Article Resource Association
With warm weather and plenty of guests, the benefit of having outdoor living space for relaxing and entertaining becomes readily apparent. Homeowners love having extra space where they can hang out, and outdoor environments are a huge plus for those trying to sell or rent a home. Overall home improvement project budgets are shrinking in 2009, while low-cost improvements are growing in popularity with both residential homeowners and landlords who want to give their properties a little added boost, according to the National Association of Home Builders. Outdoor lighting is a popular improvement. In addition to traditional landscape lighting, deck lights, post lights and recessed path lights extend the livability of outdoor decks and patios, and offer a low-cost update with the benefit of improving the usability of outdoor spaces. “Today it seems that the more practical the upgrade, the better. And lighting is an easy upgrade that adds instant function, ambiance and value,” says Jay Savignac of Aurora Deck Lighting. Taking your backyard deck or patio from daytime roost to night time entertainment space is easy. In fact,
there have never been more product options available to homeowners for lighting up their deck or fence, and creating an inviting and usable outdoor area for night time enjoyment. Best of all, outdoor lighting products can be installed without the aid of an electrician and, in most communities, no permits are required. Homeowners have a variety of options to consider. • Post lights are easy to install on the tops of deck posts and fence posts. They can be positioned directly on top of posts or mounted on the rails
using special mounting brackets. • Post lamps mount vertically on deck or fence posts and offer spot lighting, which can add security and safety in dark areas or near stairs. • Recessed deck lighting, like the Aurelle from Aurora, is a product that can be installed under seating, in deck floor boards, or even overhead inside patio covers to add lighting using the same concept as recessed lighting indoors. For more information on outdoor lighting and installation, visit Aurora Deck Lighting’s Web site at www.auroradecklighting.com.

Box was not from Napoleon’s estate By Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson Scripps Howard News Service
Q: Are you able to help me with this Limoges box that was left to me by my mother? I recall her saying the box was brought to this country from France by my greatgrandmother and that it was from Napoleon’s estate. I believe it was produced in the first half of the 19th century, but I cannot identify the “N” and crown mark. – A.S. Dear A.S.: We are scratching our heads wondering how this box was identified as being Limoges when the mark was not identified. The truth is that this piece was not made in the French town of Limoges, and we
doubt that it was ever part of Napoleon’s estate. The story really starts in the mid18th century when King Charles III of Naples, Italy, opened a porcelain factory in the castle of Capo di Monte that stood just outside Naples. The year was 1743, but the factory closed in 1759 when Charles left Italy to become king of Spain. The factory was revived at Villa Reale in Portici in 1771 by Ferdinand IV, but it was moved once again, in 1773, to Naples. where it was in operation until 1821. It is thought that very little actual porcelain was made in this factory during these time periods, but the mark used on occasion was a crown surmounted with an “N.” We are not sure of the exact size of
this interestingly shaped, bronzemounted Capodimonte-style box, but if it is a good size – say, about the size of an open hand – and in good condition, its value for insurance purposes is between $350 to $450. Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson are the authors of “Price It Yourself” (HarperResource, $19.95). Contact them at Treasures in Your Attic, PO Box 27540, Knoxville, TN 37927. Make children’s rooms unique Do you have a small fry or two (or more) living under your roof? Lucky! Enjoy them! What about making their room special? Let’s explore some possibilities. Michelle Williams of Michelle Williams Interiors has some suggestions. “When creating a child’s room that has staying power, you still want it to be young at heart. The trick is to incorporate the more childlike elements in areas that can be easily (and somewhat inexpensively) changed – like wall color.” Now that’s good advice. Get the kids involved. Let them pick their theme and their color or colors, perhaps with a little guidance on your part. And remember, the color on the wall is only paint. It can be repainted when that bubblegum pink is outgrown. Not only should you entrust the theme and color to them, you should also employ them to paint the walls, hang the pictures and rearrange the furniture. It will be theirs if they really help with the work. And if it is theirs, they might respect it and keep it clean. Wishful thinking, perhaps. Now, painting the walls black or navy blue or bright pink or purple might be easy to change as their tastes change. But when it comes to more expensive items, such as carpet or other flooring, be careful not to get carried away. Choose neutral flooring such as tan or gray. Even though it is their room, there should be a flow of some connection to the rest of the house, if only in the flooring or at least flooring color. If the flooring throughout the house is of the gray theme, for example, keep it going in the child’s room. Bedding is inexpensive enough, particularly at bargain stores, so anything goes. You can theme the bedding to fit or perhaps command the overall look of the room. When the mood changes as the years progress, new wall color coupled with new bedding will bring a complete change in the room. Furniture is expensive, so start with quality furniture that is not too childish. This way they can grow with various themes through the years yet keep the quality furniture throughout the entire growing process. Perhaps even keep the furniture for the children of their own. Williams suggests a chandelier in a girl’s room, which is something she might love at 8, as well as at 18. It does give a princess feel to the room. Crown molding, if affordable, is a great architectural feature in any room and would make a child’s room more regal. If this is not affordable now, add it later when that more mature look is requested. – Rosemary Sadez Friedmann

Kitchen updates
Local housing inventory drops Existing-home sales rose for the third consecutive month nationally with inventory easing and home prices declining less sharply in June, according to the National Association of Realtors. Existing-home sales – including single-family, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops – increased 3.6 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.89 million units in June from a downwardly revised pace of 4.72 million in May, but are 0.2 percent lower than the 4.90 million-unit level in June 2008. According to Freddie Mac, the national average commitment rate for a 30-year, conventional, fixedrate mortgage rose to 5.42 percent in Reid Williams June from 4.86 Longmont Association of Realtors percent in May; the rate was 6.32 percent in June 2008. Mortgage interest rates have trended lower in recent weeks. Total housing inventory at the end of June fell 0.7 percent to 3.82 million existing homes available for sale, which represents a 9.4-month supply at the current sales pace, down from a 9.8month supply in May. Raw inventory totals are 14.9 percent below a year ago. Here in Longmont, we have seen much of the same throughout the year. However, one change is that we did see was inventory in June down below 20
percent. For the first time this year we have seen sales drop lower than the inventory drop of the previous year. Looking forward, I believe that we need to see more job growth in the area and inventory to continue to drop in order for our market to improve. With all of the prospect activity the Longmont Area Economic Committee has seen recently and inventory continuing to drop
we might see some changes toward the positive in 2010. Other positives we are seeing in the market are that Colorado is leading the nation in the absorption of foreclosures. Along with great interest rates, this is a great market for buyers. Reid Williams is the president of the Longmont Association of Realtors. Bringing your kitchen into the 21st century is less expensive than you think if you know which upgrades to invest in. With a little creativity, our experts can save you from unsightly laminate cabinets and Formica countertops without over-spending. Just how expensive can it be? In order to compare cost, Remodeling magazine uses a 200-square-foot kitchen with 30 linear feet of cabinetry and countertops as the base for three kinds of kitchen remodels – minor kitchen remodels, major kitchen remodels and major-upscale kitchen remodels. If you’re balking at even a minor kitchen remodel, here are four alternatives that won’t have you spending five figures. 1. Paint, Paint, Paint Painting cabinets, including wood cabinets, can completely transform a kitchen. “Paint is your best friend and your biggest bang for the buck,” says Kenneth Brown, Los Angeles interior designer and host of HGTV’s “reDesign.” “It’s better to have a high-quality painted finish than a medium-quality wood finish.” 2. Add New Kitchen Hardware Even if you’re stuck with hard-topaint laminate cabinets, you can still update your kitchen by changing all the cabinet handles and drawer pulls. 3. Invest in a New Backsplash Kitchen backsplashes provide muchneeded focal points for many kitchens, and are a great way to add new life to an old design. 4. Upgrade Your Kitchen Floor Spending money on quality flooring is well worth it, because flooring is so crucial to the overall look and feel of the room. – Courtesy Kathy McCleary on HGTV.com

When I visit someone’s home, I am instantly drawn to the family photos on display. I enjoy hearing people’s stories about their loved ones and the memories they have captured forever on film. When you showcase snapshots in your decor, you not only celebrate the special moments and special people in your life, you also tell others volumes about yourself. If you would like to put your favorite photos front and center in your home, here are some of my favorite ways to create picture-perfect displays that are as stylish as they are sentimental.

Create a Photo Gallery A friend created one of the best family-photo galleries I’ve ever seen, in the upstairs hallway of her old farmhouse. She select-

ed photos that told her family’s history, starting with her ancestors and working forward in time to her own children. To give the display some visual energy, she picked a wide assortment of frames – thick, thin, square and
oval. To unify the odd assortment of frames, she painted each one cream and used matching cream mats. She then marked two horizontal lines on the wall with painter’s tape, spaced about 3 or 4 feet apart, breaking the lines around doorways and windows and continuing them on the other side. Next, she hung the photos in chronological order, creating a tight mosaic of pictures that fit snugly together between the tapelines, which she removed when finished.
Tabletop Tableaus One of my favorite ways to display photos is to tuck them into existing tabletop tableaus all over my home. The key to making these photo displays effective is to mix the snapshots in with other interesting accents.
