Color trends for 2011 Rosemary Sadez Friedmann Scripps Howard News Service

What colors are predicted for popularity in 2011? Benjamin Moore seems to have all the answers this year. The paint company conducts an annual Color Pulse program that forecasts color trends. This Color Plus forecast has won awards and even received international recognition, so it stands to reason we should check it out. Let’s explore. The theme this year is balance because color affects our mood and represents the surrounding world. As I’ve said in the past, if you are comfortable with the colors around you, you will be in better spirits and perhaps even experience better health. Four trends in the balance theme are: farm, order, escape and tribe. Each theme has a storyline. Farm represents society’s need to get back to basics, and that makes perfect sense right now. The feeling and color combinations are cow prints, textured hay and burlap feedbags. Also included are tea-stained colors, giving a rustic effect. The bright and vivid colors in this arena are taken from fruits and vegetables, including peas, corn and carrots. Yes, those colors were popular in the 1970s. As usual, what goes around comes around. Whites will be a little creamier, and we will see more butter yellows. Green is really in. Earthy soil replaces gray as a neutral, and stenciling is back in full strength. Order involves a minimalistic, geometric, stacking sort of Puritan look, bringing order into our chaotic lives. Outlining is in, by means of strong colors on door jambs and baseboards. Bright stripes and polka dots are in, too. Primary colors will be popular; so will black and white, with accents in bright, primary colors popping through. This theme works for the busy person who likes primary colors. It is bright, bold and geometric. Escape is next. Ever feel you want to escape from reality? If the feeling is strong and constant, this theme is for you. Translucent, soft retro colors that inspire elegant fantasies and fairy tales are your answer. Pearl and satin finishes will flourish, and pink will be the new red. Tribe gets us back to our core values. Communities (or tribes) have become more important. The colors in this theme are rich orange and berry hues, paired with spicy browns and bronze metallic. Rosemary Sadez Friedmann, an interior designer in Naples, Fla., is author of “Mystery of Color.” For design inquiries, write to Rosemary at DsgnQuest@aol.com.

From there, the banned them for life. But love gnomes caught on, with societies promoting them and fan clubs devoted to ‘freeing’ them. Though Travelocity’s gnome mascot travels the world willingly, most gnomes are victims of pranksters who steal them to send abroad. Flamingos are newer, introduced in 1957 by Don Featherstone, an artist who worked for

Union Products. Sold in pairs, with one standing tall, the other with head lowered to eat, flocks of these fowl are often used as a prank, planted onto lawns as a surprise greeting to the homeowner. To celebrate one famous flocking, the Madison, Wisconsin, Common Council declared the plastic pink flamingo the official city bird in 2009. “I have no idea why people love flamingos so much, but we get calls from across the country from people who want them,” says Claude Chapdelaine, vice president of Cado Products Co., makers of the original plastic pink flamingos. Purchasing the copyrights and molds in 2010, Cado Products are keeping the American icon alive after a brief stint out of production. “It’s taken us a little time to get ready for full production,” Chapdelaine says. “We had to put an addition onto our factory in order to make them. But demand is huge, and this year we expect to sell over 100,000 pairs of them.” Gardeners are drawn to displaying this kitsch for two reasons, Ott says: to make an ironic statement celebrating tastelessness (which we actually really love), and as a conversation piece

in particular spaces. Stumble upon one in the garden, and you’re sure to question the gardener about their sanity. Are the differences in devotees of gnomes or flamingos? Ott believes so, speculating that what you display says a lot about how you want the world to view you. Someone who favors gnomes is projecting a playful personality, one of ironic sensibility. Gnomes are whimsical, but because they’re small, they’re less noticeable. Flamingos tell a different story; the neon pink ornament is in-

your-face, projecting a sense of counter culture and flaunting of rules. “By displaying flamingos, people are being transgressive; there’s almost a subversive element that’s less true of gnomes,” Ott says. “They’re socially edgy; the adult version of being a punk rock teenager with colored hair.” Carol O’Meara is a horticulture entomologist with the Colorado State University Extension office at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont. War lithograph a casualty of neglect By Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson Scripps Howard News Service

Dear Helaine and Joe: I’ve attached a photo of a print with the words “Einzug in Paris ... am March 1871.” Eighteenby-22 inches, the print illustrates the German victory in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. I took it to a conservator, and the rips are not repairable. The major rip in the left upper quadrant was mended years ago by gluing the back of the print to a piece of stationery. I am certain the print must be at least 100 years old. I am advised to sell it “as is.” Can you appraise this for me? Thank you. – B.W.

Dear B.W.: Many collectors are fascinated with war- and military-related items, everything from guns and uniforms to medals and personal letters from the battlefield. This particular print appears to be a chromolithograph – or colored lithograph. Chromolithography is a mechanical process, but it can be an expensive one if done well and can take some time to produce a number of prints. However, it became a way to mass produce popular images and make them available to buyers, particularly those who lived in urban areas. Godefroy Engelmann patented this process in France in June 1837, and it first appeared in the United States around 1840. This particular chromolithograph is ti-

The real issue here is the condition of B.W.’s print, and there is only one word to describe it – terrible. The tears, the grime, the missing pieces of the margins that go into the print itself and the glued-on piece

of stationery all conspire to make this item a marginal value at best. We advise B.W. to frame this piece and love it, because finding a buyer at almost any price will be difficult, if not impossible. In this deplorable condition, a value of $20 to $30 is generous.

tled “Einzug in Paris” (“Marching into Paris” or “Entering Paris,” depending on the translation); it shows the Prussian army under Helmuth von Moltke and Otto von Bismarck entering the French capital after the Prussian victory in the short-lived war (July 1870 to May 1871). A number of lithographs depicted this scene, including an American version titled “Der Sieges Einzug der Deutschen in Paris,” printed by H. Schile of New York and published by George Schlegel Lithography in New York.

Q: I am 67 years old and own a rental property. I would like to sell the home but don’t want to pay taxes on the gain. Should I live in the property for two years and then sell it? I am still working, but I’m in the poverty income tax bracket. The house has no mortgage, but the taxes, insurance and utilities are eating up my savings. Is there any way I could declare a hardship and avoid the capital gains taxes? A: Before you make any decision, you need to know what effect the sale of your home would have on your federal income taxes. If you don’t make much money now, you’re probably not paying much to the federal government. If you know what sales price you might get from the sale of the rental property, you then can decide whether to sell it and not worry about the tax consequences. However, if you’ve owned the property for many years and the taxes you owe will be quite significant, you may have some options to limit the amount you pay without fully eliminating the entire tax bill. The only sure way to defer the payment of capital gains and other federal income taxes on the sale of rental properties is to use a company that specializes in 1031 exchanges. When you use a company that handles 1031 exchanges, you basically sell the current investment property, place all the proceeds from the sale with the exchange company and buy a replacement investment property of like kind within a certain time period.

Ilyce Glink & Sam Tamkin Tribune Media Services

Using a 1031 exchange will allow you to sell the property but won’t let you get to the money. That money would be tied up in the new property you would be required to buy. It seems that you probably want to sell the property and keep the money. If that’s the case, you won’t want to use a 1031 exchange. You talked about living in the rental property for at least two years. Well, when it comes to your primary residence, if you have lived in the primary residence for two out of the last five years, you can exclude from federal income taxes all profits up to $250,000 (or $500,000 if you are married). But the key there is that the home must be your primary residence and you must live in the home for two out of the last five years. In your situation, you could move out of your current home and into the rental property and live there at least two years. But a couple of years ago, the IRS changed the rules: If you owned a rental property that was later converted into your primary residence, you would still have to pay capital gains and other federal income taxes due on the sale of that property

based on how long it was an investment property and how long it was your primary residence. So, moving into the home would not eliminate your obligation to pay capital gains taxes or other taxes to the federal government, but through time would decrease some of the tax obligation. Still, it’s worth finding out exactly what you’d owe. Because the highest capital gains tax rate right now is 15 percent, you might find that if you sell the property now, you won’t pay all that in capital gains taxes. Real estate investors typically take a tax break on their federal income taxes by depreciating the property. That depreciation may result in a reduction in your federal income taxes previously paid. When you sell the rental property, the federal government requires you to repay that benefit previously given to you at a rate of about 25 percent. In other words, if you took $100,000 in depreciation on your rental property through the years, you’d owe $25,000 to the government when you sell. Given all of this information, you need to understand what your ultimate liability would be if you sold the property. If you have someone who helps you with your federal income taxes, you can work with that person to see what it is you might have to pay if you sell the rental property. Samuel J. Save energy in your home

By Charlie Nardozzi

Family Features

While it’s easy this time of year to just daydream about next year’s garden, there are some chores to be done. Late winter is the perfect time for one of my favorite garden tasks: pruning fruit trees. Most gardeners are nervous about making cuts to their precious trees, and, consequently, they prune only a little, and poorly, or not at all. Pruning New and Old Trees When pruning young trees, the goal is to create a strong branch structure and proper angles for future growth. Prune to create three to five branches that have a 45- to 60-degree angle from the main trunk. These branches should ideally be evenly arranged around the trunk and at least 2 to 3 feet off the ground. You can spread the branches when they’re young to grow at the right angle. Hang fishing weights with nylon wire on the branches for one growing season, or use wooden “spreaders” to push the branches apart to create the optimal angle. For established trees, always remove dead, diseased, broken and competing branches back to the trunk or a main

Basic Pruning Cuts Keep these basic tips in mind: • Use sharp pruning shears for any cuts on branches smaller than 1/2 inch in diameter. Use loppers or a pruning saw for larger diameter wood. • Cut thin diameter branches 1/4 inch above a bud that is facing in a direction you want the new branch to grow. Make the cut on an angle to shed water and promote faster healing. • Horizontal branches produce more fruit than vertical ones. Prune vertical branches back to a main stem or trunk. • Prune moderately every year to keep the tree healthy and fruiting consistently. The tendency of some fruit trees to bear in alternate years can be caused by insufficient pruning.

branch first. For a neglected tree, try not to prune more than 25 percent of the tree in any given year. Too much pruning can cause a lot of sucker growth that year. The exception would be a very old tree that needs to be stimulated to put out new growth. The goal is to have large diameter limbs near the bottom of the tree and smaller ones at the top. Don’t prune limbs flush to the trunk or main branches.

heating and cooling equipment and more. In fact, by switching out non-Energy Star appliances that are more than 10 years old for the following Energy Star qualified counterparts – refrigerator, dishwasher, clothes washer, room air conditioner and water heater – you could save more than $2,500 over five years. • Remove and recycle your old, inefficient appliances. Every year, Americans throw away 9 million refrigerators. Collectively, that’s more than 1 billion pounds of metal, glass and plastic, as well as more than 18 million pounds of harmful toxins like CFCs, CPBs, mercury and oil. • Unplug electronics you aren’t using. Many electronic products for your home are consuming energy even when they are not on. Using a power strip can make this easier. If you are considering buying a new electronic, such as a TV, DVD player, computer or any home theater or office product, think about buying Energy Star qualified models. • Be smart about your home climate. Depending on where you live, replacing your old heating and cooling equipment with equipment that has earned the Energy Star label can cut your annual energy bill by more than $200. Lowering the heat or turning off air conditioners and fans when you are gone can also help keep your energy use down.

It’s amazing what we can do to our homes today to make them more energy efficient, from green roofs to geothermal heating. While some new homes are built with green in mind, you can also make your existing home more environmentally friendly while saving some cash. Whether you are looking to conserve energy or save money, reviewing the EnergyGuide label on appliances and looking for the Energy Star label on appliances, electronics and other energy-using products is a great way to identify the most energy-efficient products on the market. By making a few adjustments in your home energy use, such as choosing Energy Star qualified products, you can save on your utilities bills and make a positive impact on the environment as well. “From switching your light bulbs to your appliances, there are many ways to reduce your energy consumption,” says Ty Pennington, the host of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and spokesperson for the Sears Big Switch program, which aims to help families make the switch to 5 million Energy Star qualified appliances. The program helps educate even more Americans about Energy Star and encourages them to make the switch to more energy-efficient appliances and electronics. Here are a few tips from Pennington on how to conserve energy in your home: • Switch out your incandescent light bulbs for compact florescent light (CFL) bulbs, which use 75 percent less energy and last about 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs. An Energy Star qualified CFL bulb will save about $40 through its lifetime and comes with a two-year warranty. Also, you can use motion-sensor lights in outdoor areas so that you aren’t leaving lights on overnight. • Consider buying energy-efficient, Energy Star qualified appliances, electronics,

The winter months often mean time indoors. So, why not give the two rooms that you spend the most time in – the kitchen and bath – a function and fashion facelift? Luckily, minor updates that are easy, quick and inexpensive can make a major impact. Try some of these simple suggestions from real do-it-yourselfers, and you can make your kitchen and bath more stylish, safe, organized and enjoyable – all in eight, easy steps.

One of the easiest and most affordable ways to make over a bathroom is to update with new accessories. With a variety of designs and finishes, accessories such as towel bars, towel rings, robe hooks, towel bar hooks and shelves help get you more organized, while making a dramatic style statement. And don’t stop in the bath, towel bars and robe hooks are ideal kitchen additions to keep pot holders and towels close at hand.

Next, install new bathroom faucets. With nearly limitless finish, style and function options available, the simple change of a faucet can transform a room in only minutes.

It’s one of life’s constants: Toilet paper always runs out. But changing the roll doesn’t have to involve a spring-loaded bar flying across the room. Depending on your decorating tastes, choose from an innovative pivoting paper holder that features a bar you simply lift up to replace the roll or a European-styled design that features an open end for easy roll replacement.

Add style and space in the shower in minutes with a Curved Shower Rod from Moen. Originally seen only in upscale hotels, this unique product adds up to seven more inches of elbow room in the shower. Plus, new S-shaped Shower Rod Hooks snap right onto the shower rod, offering convenient access to hang a variety of items – from towels and robes, to loofahs and shaving kits.

When it comes to decking the walls in the kitchen or bath, there’s no need for expensive art. Try adding your personal touch with framed photos of family or friends to share experiences and keep memories alive.

Looking for storage? Need a place to keep your Merlot or champagne? Wine racks are the perfect answer, and they can even be functional in the bath. Choose a rack in a finish to match the rest of your bath accessories and fill it with rolled hand towels and washcloths.

Making your basement liveable, versatile

steps to facelift your kitchen, bath

Times-Call / Home & Real Estate Weekly

Turn a boring, plain bathroom mirror into a work of art by adding Mirrorscapes Mirror Frames. Mirrorscapes transform plate-glass mirrors into style statements in a matter of minutes. Available in a variety of styles, these easyto-install frames create a beautifully coordinated, custom-designed look.

While style is always a concern, bathroom safety should be, too. In the bath, add grab bars or hand grips. Moen Home Care offers a variety of products such as SecureMount Grab Bars or Hand Grips that are stylish – available in many designs and finishes – and easy to install. In the kitchen, make sure your smoke detectors are working properly and keep a fire extinguisher under the sink for easy access.

What would you do with an extra floor of living space in your home? Create a fitness area or home theatre for your family? Go ahead and dream a little. “Found space” in your next home can easily be obtained by having your basement made from a pre-cast insulated foundation system. “Basements can be extremely versatile rooms in the home when they’re built with both functional and decorative products,” says Matt Weber, a professional remodeler and editor of Extreme How-To magazine. To begin the process, Weber recommends homeowners research steel-reinforced concrete Xi wall panels. Backed with 2.5 inches of DOW Styrofoam insulation, this system from Superior Walls creates a permanent barrier against sidewall water penetration, making the basement damp-proof. “When constructing your basement, you can request pre-cut areas in the foundation system for windows,” Weber says. “That way, whether you’re working in a home office or shooting pool with friends, you can crank out acrylic block awning or hopper windows to allow in lots of light and fresh air. And, if the window opens out to an unsightly area, like a window well, the acrylic block ’hides’ that area while adding decorative appeal to the interior of the basement.” Available in a wide selection of sizes and styles, acrylic block windows from Hy-Lite, a U.S. Block Windows Co., also provide energy efficiency features. This way, whether your basement is used as a study zone for children or a family game room, everyone is comfortable year round. For fast and easy moulding projects, Weber recommends adding durable Fypon urethane millwork. Lightweight miterless moulding systems require simple straight cuts and eliminate mitering hassles. Two-piece ceiling medallions can snap into place around ceiling fans. The pieces all resist insects, warping and moisture while providing instant designer appeal to the basement. “Having basement space that’s comfortable and functional makes so much sense for homeowners,” Weber says. “By making the right decisions at the time of construction to use pre-cast insulated foundation systems and other reliable products, homeowners are making a long-term investment in their family’s happiness and in the resale value of their house.” – Metro Services
