Nature’s bounty inspires fall interiors The warm tones of the autumn harvest provide an inspiring palette for home decor by bringing seasonal beauty in from the fields. This transforms your indoor haven from one resonating light summer frivolity to something a little richer with more depth. Fall thrives on all things rustic and natural – so it’s no wonder that a home enhanced by a backdrop of deep brown, gold, green and purple reflects the season’s warmth. Nothing says fall more definitively than a cozy room designed in a diverse palette of warm, nature-inspired hues. “A fall-based color palette offers some of the most enticing and exciting variety of colors to work with,” says Donna Schroeder, color marketing and design manager for Martin-Senour Paints. “It’s truly an unexpected integration of color, and each shade adds depth and character that you’ll appreciate as you ready your home for the cold winter months ahead.” Paint, in general, is a savvy, cost-effective way to transform your interior from the light, airy summer palette to autumn’s bolder, warmer hues. A simple change of wall colors lends a completely different feel. For example, hues found in Martin-Senour’s fall color palette include goldenrod gold, truffles brown, pine smoke and cubicle clay. “These colors work together to create a unified feel within your home. Set off gold walls with rich wood furniture and patterned upholstery interweaving the season’s rich truffle-based brown and clay tones. Or, let it pop by mixing it with a timeless neutral, such as this season’s workhorse – gray,” Schroeder says. “And don’t stop with the walls. Consider using these paint hues to refresh tired furniture, too.” While the pairing of blue and brown remains popular, designers have mined a new combination of colors for fall interiors: green and brown. Homerun Heating & Air 727 Main St., Longmont two most prevalent colors, this sophisticated, yet accessible, combination plays well in a variety of interior rooms and settings. While color is critically important, don’t forget, in any painting project true success lies in the initial legwork and the tools you use to get the job done. Make sure you properly prepare your walls before painting. You’ll be glad you did. Repair any holes or cracks, sanding the spackle smooth. Wash the walls to remove any debris or grime, then prime with a quality latex primer to provide the best possible canvas for your new palette. The quality of tools you use is also important. A poorly constructed brush or roller cover can make a great color look terrible when it’s applied. Selecting the right brush and roller is crucial. Cheap brushes can lose bristles and spread paint unevenly. Armed with a palette of rich autumninspired hues, a high-quality wall paint, the right applicators and a sense of creativity, you’ll easily be able to reinvigorate your home into a vibrant reflection of the harvest season. As Schroeder notes, “Paint truly is the perfect seasonal reinvention solution.”

Choosing a professional
Get the job done with these error-proof tips By Summer Stair Longmont Times-Call
As the days become shorter and cooler, more homeowners start spending more time indoors. This fall, spruce up your home or favorite room with a quick, cheap makeover that will not only leave you feeling like you just stepped into a different home, but one that will leave your room shining. Painting a room can easily be done in a day or two, depending on the size, and can transform a room for as little as $40. The following are some tips Tracey Imhof, store manager at Sherwin Williams in Longmont, offered to help homeowners paint like a professional. • Get a straight edge with the tape and caulk trick. To make sure paint doesn’t bleed under the painter’s tape, Imhof recommends that if you are painting the wall to tape off the ceiling, apply caulk in the crease and then wipe off any remaining caulk with a wet rag or finger. This will leave a small amount of caulk only in the crease. This will assure that your paint line will be as straight as your tape is and no bleeding should occur. • Pull the painter’s tape as soon as you are finished painting. Leaving the tape on for too long could make the removal of the tape harder once the
paint dries. • Always plan on using two coats of paint. By applying two coats, the paint will wear better throughout time and it will also diminish uneven paint spots on the wall. • Use a primer on a new wall or one that has recently been textured. This will give you a smoother surface and it will hold the paint better. As far as using a primer when changing colors, Imhof says it is optional. Primers are often less expensive than a gallon of paint, so Imhof says if a homeowner is painting a large room sometimes they opt for a primer first to cut down on the cost. Colors, such as red and yellow, often need a primer to assure the intensity in the color goes on smooth
and even. • Clean, dry and fill in any holes or cracks on the wall before you start painting. The paint will adhere and look better on the wall if this is done prior to painting. • If painting the trim and the wall, paint the trim first and then the wall. Imhof says once a painter has applied the tape and caulk trick from above, they can also trim out the windows and walls first with a “weenie roller” or a roller that is 3 inches long and three-quarters in diameter. This is specifically made for lining around objects. Imhof says this roller makes the job faster, easier and provides better coverage than a brush.
If painting a room isn’t your idea of a fun time, hiring a professional painter can take the burden off your shoulders and ensure a job done well. Paul Ferris, vice president of operations for Perfection Painting in Longmont, offers these tips to guarantee you get a well-qualified painter. • Ferris recommends before calling prospective painting companies to first check and see if they are a member of the Better Business Bureau and local chambers. See if anyone has placed any complaints against them while you are at it. • Also, check references and ask friends and family about specific companies and see what kind of reputation they have on the street. See how long the company has been established, as well. Ferris says in the painting business there are a lot of small companies who are here today and gone tomorrow. You want to make sure the painter you choose will be around to guarantee their warranties. • Along those lines, make sure a warrantee of some kind is offered. Ferris says most companies will ensure their work and offer a one- to fiveyear warranty. • Be wary of anyone asking for money upfront. Ferris says a well-established business will guarantee the job is done to the homeowners’ satisfaction before being paid. If someone asks for money in advance it means they are not established enough and may not finish the job to your liking, Ferris says. Look for a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee. • Meet with the painter in advance. Are they professional? Would you want them in your home? A homeowner should feel comfortable with the painter they choose. The painter should be personable, well-dressed and drive a company vehicle. Ferris says a professional painter should be dressed in all-white, the theory behind the all-white outfit is the cleaner the painter’s clothing is, the cleaner their painting job will be. A company vehicle also implies the company takes pride in what they do. • Make sure you get a bid for the job beforehand along with references. A company should always give you references to contact, if they don’t they may not want you to talk to past clients.

Adding unique temporary decor fancy. For those people living in rentals, decorating can be a bit more challenging when painting and adding the perfect touches aren’t always an option. In what ways can people spruce up their home if it’s not a permanent location? Dena Blackburn of Encore Home Styles in Longmont gave some pointers on ways to decorate that won’t leave permanent marks, but will dress up a room in order to make it feel more like a home. • Add curtains. They are easy to take down and take with you for use in another space. Most apartments require that you leave standard blinds in place so dress up the blinds by installing drapes over them. Installation is simply a few screws in the wall which can be patched up with a little spackle when moving out. • Hang artwork. It not only takes up space but adds color to any room. One doesn’t even need to purchase a big expensive piece of art, simply frame a favorite poster.

Your deck has probably given you hours of enjoyment this spring and summer. But family gatherings and summer barbecues can take their toll on any deck. So before the chill in the air turns to harsh winter weather, clean, restore and protect your deck to prepare for the long winter months ahead. Here are a few easy deck maintenance tips to help keep your outdoor living space looking great for years.
Clean and Restore Start by cleaning your deck thoroughly to remove any grayed surface fibers, ground-in dirt, barbecue stains and stains from mold, mildew, moss and algae. For pressure-treated wood, use an environmentally friendly, acid and chlorinefree, oxygen-powered powder concentrate cleaner, such as Wolman DeckBrite Wood Cleaner & Coating Prep. If your stained or painted deck has
seen better days, consider stripping any faded or deteriorating finish with Wolman DeckStrip Stain & Finish Remover. It removes both oil and latex solid, semitransparent or transparent, toner-type stains and prepares your deck for new water repellent sealers or stains.
Protect your Deck After cleaning, it’s important to apply a water repellent finish, such as Wolman RainCoat, F&P or DuraStain to your deck before winter’s onslaught. Formulated to stop rain, sleet, snow and ice from penetrating wood surfaces, Wolman water repellent coatings minimize water damage such as splitting or warping. The products offer a guarantee against water damage, and provide long lasting protection, so you won’t have to reapply annually. Plus, they are available in a variety of colors and opacity levels – from totally clear to sheer, transparent natural wood tones to semi-transparent shades.

Twin Peaks Liquor’s wine cellar in Longmont. (Lauren Seaton/Times-Call)
Imagine a basement room with cool dirt floors, a ceiling supported by rustic wood beams, walls lined in oak barrels and wine bottles layered in dust – the quintessential wine cellar. But few of us have $30,000 cellars, hundreds of wine bottles to store or much time to wait. However, to truly enjoy a wine, little time is needed. “About 95 percent of the wines produced aren’t made to store for long periods of time. It’s not going to make the wine better,” says RT Magley, general manager of Twin Peaks Liquor, adding that most wines are made to be drunk in the first five years. So, go ahead and drink that 2005 Ravenswood Cabernet. But know that any varietal being aged – whether because of quality or sentimental value – will be affected by how it’s stored. “The biggest thing is to try and keep the environment regulated. You don’t want huge changes in temperature. Essentially, you want a cool dark place,” Magley says. Temperature regulation is manageable but the

lack of humidity in Colorado can be problematic. When corks get too dry, oxygen gets into the bottle, spoiling the contents. Magley suggests storing wine in an unused closet with a humidifier to control both light and humidity. The temperature of whites and reds is more complex than warm and cold. Magley explains that the gauge room temperature – which refers to the proper temperature to drink a red wine – actually came from the days when the majority of wine was stored in cool basement cellars. Room temperature does not mean as warm as your living room, and red wine shouldn’t be either. Before pouring a glass of red, put the bottle in your refrigerator for 15 to 30 minutes, he suggests. When drinking white wine, take the bottle out of the refrigerator 15 to 30 minutes before pouring it. Then enjoy your wine, but not in just any glass. The correct wine goblet and a decanter improves every wine, even if it came from the $10 bin. “That’s why you aerate wine,” Magley says. “If you open a bottle for a little while and let it breathe it can taste better.”

Declutter
your Garage
By Kate Frasure Longmont Times-Call
Walking through a neighborhood, homeowners believe neighbors can only see the outside of their cookie-cutter house and the freshly cut lawns with flowers illuminating the yard. Little does the owner know that there is one room that is exposed to the rest of the world on a daily basis. The garage. Don’t consider it a room? Think again. “The garage is one of the largest rooms of a house and the most neglected,” says Mike Harty of GarageTek in Berthoud. So why shouldn’t one’s garage reflect the beauty of the rest of the house? With summer coming to a close, it has never been a better time to tackle the mess in your garage. Harty, who has been in the business of garages for eight years, says safety, organization and cleanliness are the three keys to any garage organization; safety being the most important factor.
Safety “Every garage has hazardous materials,” Harty says. Whether it is neighborhood children who wander into a garage and come across dangerous pesticides or a shovel falls onto a vehicle, the garage can be an unsafe place. The first step in creating a safer garage is to establish zones. For example, an automotive zone would be where all car-care products can be locked and stored out of the reach of children. Sharp objects, like tools and rakes, should be attached to the wall or placed in a cabinet where they cannot be knocked off the wall and harm someone. With winter approaching, Harty suggests covering garage floors with a slip resistant coating. “Every garage should also have a fire extinguisher, first aid kit and even a carbon monoxide detector,” he adds. Budget According to Harty, a standard organization system can run anywhere from $1,800 to $3,500 and more complex systems can run $5,000 and more. “The least expensive home remodel you can do is on the garage which can run $15 to $30 a square foot. It all depends on the size of space and what you are looking to accomplish,” Stern says. Organization and Cleanliness According to Harty, the key to any garage organization is to have everything off the ground and in it’s respective zone. He suggests using cabinets, shelves, hooks, activity racks and utilizing the ceil-

ing for storage with overhead racks and brackets to hoist bikes. “To preserve the investment you need to have a modular system,” Harty says. “With a mod system, anything you have on the wall, can be changed and rearranged.” Barbara Stern of Affordable Closets in Boulder
recommends creating cubby systems for each member of the family. That way all the messy sports equipment, tools and other items that can not be kept in the house can be organized for each member of the family. “You need to design around your lifestyle,” she says. “Keep things you are using now easy to access.”

Follow steps for gorgeous grass next season Article Resource Association
Summer has wound down and soon it will be time to drain the gas from the lawn mower and safely store the string trimmer. You may feel like summer yard work is done for another year. But don’t turn your back on your lawn just yet. Take care of some essential lawn chores this fall and you’ll reap the rewards next spring – in the form of a lush, healthy, beautiful lawn. In the fall, lawn grasses need to become especially strong as the weather cools. Give them some TLC now, and your lawn will reap the benefits throughout the winter and into next spring. During the fall, your lawn is getting ready to go dormant for the winter. Your grass will rely on its roots throughout the winter season to obtain nutrients until spring. Following these five simple steps will ensure a sensational start to lush lawns next spring.
thatch interferes with nutrient and water absorption. To gauge thatch’s thickness, take a 6-inch-deep plug of sod and soil from the lawn and measure the thickness of the packed thatch. If your thatch layer is more than one-and-a-half-inch thick, your grass will struggle to grow.
Start with the Soil and Aerate The healthier your soil is the healthier your grass will be. Good, aerated soil will make room for water, nutrients, air and roots to move with ease. Aerated, healthy soil will hold water like a sponge, but at the same time promote drainage. Aerating also creates a good environment for the micro-organisms, worms and other life forms necessary for healthy turf. Without good soil you will find yourself doing a lot of weed control and over-fertilizing.
Supply Soil Conditioners Also called soil amendments, soil conditioners added to soil improve plant growth and overall health. Soil conditioners are not fertilizers, but they do improve soil’s drainage and some will also increase the water holding capacity of your soil.
Don’t Delay Dethatching Thatch is the layer of dead grass that settles in between the soil surface and the green foliage of the grass. Too much
Sow Your Seeds Sowing grass seed will increase turf density and improve the overall health and appearance of your lawn. Seeding in
the fall helps the lawn recover from heavy summer traffic and it influences the lawn’s look for the following spring. A dense lawn is also the best natural defense against weed and insect damage. For a wide variety of grass seed choices specifically formulated for your geographic region, visit www.outsidepride .com. An increasingly popular addition to backyard beauty is planting wildflowers instead of grass in hard to maintain, problem spots, like slopes and banks. Outsidepride.com offers a e variety of blends for nine areas of the country, from the rainy Northeast to the dry Southwest. Adding wildflower seed this fall to your backyard will add beauty and diversity to your landscape next spring.
The Easy Way When it comes to labor intensive fall lawn chores like aerating, dethatching and soil conditioning, brute force isn’t necessarily the best, most efficient way to get the job done. You could rent a core aerator to pull up finger-sized cores of soil, but it takes a strong back and plenty of time to manage the heavy equipment. If your lawn is small enough, you can do the dethatching job using a thick-bladed thatching rake. But bigger lawns call for a power thatching mower. Soil conditioning is easier, yet still time-consuming. Try a labor-free, easy, all-natural option that’s a liquid product, such as LazyMan Liquid Gold. You can tackle the tasks of aerating, dethatching and soil conditioning with a hose-end sprayer. Non-toxic and all natural, LazyMan Liquid Gold’s polymers penetrate hard soil and alternately attract or repel water molecules, opening pathways to allow free passage of moisture and nutrients. A brew of microbes feeds on dead plant tissue in the thatch layer, reducing thatch by half with just three applications at four-week intervals. Finally, humic acids and soil fungi promote soil fertility and plant growth. After one-step spraying of LazyMan Liquid Gold, you’ve accomplished three essential fall lawn care tasks. Now, all that’s left to do is seed and feed. By following these simple lawn care practices in the fall, you can put your lawn to bed and sleep easily knowing that when your lawn awakens from winter it will be healthy and super-charged for spring. Best Buy’s Top Picks Home Theater in a Box: Sony HDX589W – $430 By Brian Smith
This 5.1 surround sound system has a five DVD disc changer, is iPod ready and has semi-wireless back speakers. It’s small compact size and mountable rear speakers are ideal for the average home owner.
Longmont Times-Call
With the winter months approaching, most Coloradans find themselves trading in their bathing suits and barbecues for a comfy couch and a good movie. You can take your movie viewing experience to the next level by investing in a home theater system. Once thought of as an expensive luxury item for the living room, home theater systems are becoming a reality for many families thanks to dropping prices and simpler set-up and installation.
Gearing Up According to Best Buy home theater expert Jennifer Scott, the first thing to think about when gearing up to go shopping for a system is what your living room already has. An ideal home theater consists of a high definition television, a DVD or Blu-Ray player and a multispeaker audio system with receiver. If you still have a big clunky tube TV set, you should consider upgrading to an HDTV, either plasma or LCD. Scott recommends at least a 42-to-47 inch television to maximize the home theater experience. Parts and Pieces You should tailor what you already have around what you need. Many consumers are opting for the home theater in a box or integrated systems, which usually provide speakers, a DVD player, receiver, remote and the proper connections. These boxed sets are often less expensive than purchasing the components separately and offer an easy set up process. Boxed systems also keep size in consideration, as most consumers don’t have huge living rooms to dedicate to a home theater system. Some, however,

limit what other devices besides your DVD player can be routed to the speakers, some may sacrifice audio fidelity for cost considerations and are not usually upgradeable in the future. If you already have some of the pieces or are an audiophile with picky ears, buying the pieces separately might be the route you are looking for. Purchasing the parts separately may not be as easy to set up or as cheap, but you can customize your theater experience and upgrade as new technologies develop. Scott recommends consulting a home theater expert before buying any equipment to make sure the components you are choosing are compatible.
Great Expectations Before going to the store, it is important to consider what you want out of
your system. All systems should offer the basics such as radio tuners, Dolby Digital and DTS surround-sound support. Some players also offer a USB input for iPods or satellite radio compatibility. Other considerations include the number and size of speakers you think your living room could comfortably host, what other devices you would like to connect to the system, such as a gaming system, and how you plan to route the speakers to the system.
Happy Hunting When making an investment in home entertainment, it is recommended to visit a store to test out the systems they have on display and get the advice of a representative on what system would meet your needs best. Discover a home’s
History
By Brian Smith Longmont Times-Call
“I’ll believe it when I see it” is my response to most people when they bring up the supernatural or ghosts. However, when my mother told me about my childhood “night time friend,” I became suspicious. I certainly don’t remember seeing ghosts or apparitions as a child, but my mother swears that when we lived in a small apartment on Francis Street in the early 1990s, I would tell her about “the man who visits me in the night.” I’m sure my mother would have dismissed my claims as just the jibber jabber of a little kid looking for attention if it was not for the strange occurrences which took place within that apartment.
Getting Started A quick call to the Boulder County Clerk and Recorder’s office got me started in the right direction. Boulderassessor.org has a link to a property record search where you can search by street name, address and subdivision among others. This search gave me a detailed record of the building at that address including the name of the company which owns the property. Unfortunately, the records through the assessor’s office only contain the current owners of a property.
Throughout the years, I have heard the story of my mother watching a jar of cream mysteriously move across a dresser and fall on the floor a thousand times: the supposed work of our ghost “Trevor.” This is where journalism and superstition meet for me. My natural curious disposition led me to wonder if during the history of that apartment complex, there was ever a man named Trevor that lived there. Perhaps a murder? Or was it built on a sacred burial ground? Did a spirit have unfinished business? My imagination ran wild until I decided to do some research. But like many homeowners, I didn’t know where to start when researching the history of properties.
Digging Deeper The owner of the property was a rental company, but I wanted names so I navigated to the clerk and recorder’s Internet record search. From this search, I entered the reception number (or deed number) from the assessor’s property record to see who the owners were. Listed in the results are the grantor and the grantee. Using the name from the grantor, I was able to back navigate through deed changes and trace this property to 1966 when it was purchased by the Longmont Land Company. I found the name of the owner of the rental company who had managed the properties since 1972. Unfortunately, my search turned south when the owner told me she did not keep records of previous tenants and had heard nothing of a ghost haunting the unit we lived in.
Continuing Your Search Although my search was fruitless to find the mysterious Trevor, many people live in a house with a historical past and don’t know it. Here are a few tips that local independent historian Mona Lambrecht recommends to help turn up facts on properties. • Consider what you are interested in. You will have to search for information on the people who lived there differently than the architecture styles or construction. Come up with a list of questions you want answered. • Cover the basics first. Check your local library for information on the history of your community that may mention your home. Such items include architectural surveys and historic resource inventories. • Ask your neighbors or the previous owner to see if they know of any resources to lead you. They may also know of any remodeling that has occurred through the years. • Get governmental. Search the clerk and recorder’s office, as well as the assessor’s office to see who held the deed. Once you have names, you can search newspapers for obituaries or other articles. Try census records or city directories for more information. • Try to find the original building permit through the department of building inspection. This can provide the date which it was built and by what company. Depending on what city you live in, building permits may be located in different departments.
So What Next? Researching the history of your home can be an exciting quest into the past. According to Lambrecht, you can do a lot with what you discover including making a time capsule to leave in the house, give as a gift to a family member or even apply for a landmark designation if qualifications are met. As for my search, the ghost of Trevor and the falling jar of cream ... I guess some things are best left to the imagination.

The Warmth of Metal Artist hand forges metal for custom creations Story by Kristi Ritter • Photos by Paul Litman Longmont Times-Call
Straight from the stove, a fiery rod of metal is pulled out by artist Randall Trahan. He acts quick before the rod cools, twisting and hammering it into the design he envisions. Then it’s back into the stove to heat it up again for the next step in forging the metal. While the project of the day was creating spiral rods for part of a display rack, Trahan’s ideas are endless when working with metal. For Trahan, the ability to work with metal and forge it into his own creations has become a passion of his for the past 10 years while operating his business, Trahan Metal Studios, from his Longmont home. While he started in southern Louisiana as a carpenter, moving to Colorado allowed Trahan to get his foot in the door at a Boulder metal shop before branching out on his own. In addition to his studio work, he also works full-time for David Norrie Studios in Berthoud. Norrie is an artist blacksmith renown for his unique architectural hand-forged metalwork. Most of the work Trahan does for Norrie consists of residential accents such as sculptures, railings and furniture. “Working for David, I do things most people wouldn’t ever dream of,” he says. “It raises the bar.”

Randall Trahan created this railing from forged metalwork, as well as the deck sculpture above, for Longmont residents Mike and Terri Terbrueggen.

Everything in its Place Laundry rooms used to be relegated to the basement, but more people are finding space for washers and dryers in convenient areas of the house like upstairs near bedrooms. Experts say installing a “laundry nook is not only a good investment and can raise the value of your home, but it can make hauling baskets of clothing up and down flights of stairs a thing of the past. The closer the washer and dryer are to living spaces the more important it is for them to be quiet. “Look for machines with new technologies that reduce vibration for nearly noiseless laundry sessions, says home design expert Doug Wilson. “If your washer and dryer are out in the open, look for colorful and sleek models that can stand out stylishly on their own. washing motions – rolling, stepping, swinging and scrubbing. Cold care, heavy duty and enhanced hand-wash cycles use a combination of these motions to gently and effectively clean clothes. Look for the Energy Star label on washing machines, and you can cut your water costs by up to 50 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. There are also machines that automatically adjust the water temperature and the amount of water used for each load to prevent excess and waste. Detergent designed for use in cold water helps to save energy by effectively cleaning clothes without hot water. Another trend in laundry is the use of steam for greater energy and water efficiency. Steam washers and dryers also offer enhanced clothing care options such as short, steam-only cycles that help to reduce wrinkles and remove odors from clothing with using water and detergent and can help cut down on trips to the dry cleaner in the process, helping to save money in addition to energy.

Feng shui helps create positive energy By Lauren Seaton Longmont Times-Call
Feng shui is far more intricate than colorful hand towels, crystal balls and angled couches as Western culture has defined it. This chic version stems from only a portion of the ancient Chinese art. Feng shui began more than 6,000 years ago, and it focuses on positive energy flow, the relationship between the body and land, and harmonious placement of objects to encourage good energy. Gary Hendrickson, managing director of Feng Shui Design International works in Boulder, as well as the Denver metro area. He also works nationally and internationally with architects, landscapers and home and business owners to improve lifestyles and success. According to Hendrickson, “The more accurate you get, the more effective you’ll be.” But accuracy stems from understanding, and feng shui is often misunderstood. While it is often discussed as a single art form, there are actually 12 different types of feng shui and they all do different things, according to Hendrickson.
This living room and adjacent entry area had intrinsic accident-prone and stuck money flow energy that was mitigated by having no Earth element decor colors. (Courtesy Gary Hendrickson)
www.mainstlandscaping.com
Don’t have the time or money for a full feng shui makeover? Try Gary Hendrickson’s quick tips. • Learn about directions. Sleeping in the correct direction can promote health and luck. • Get a water fountain that flows in one direction and face it toward your house. Then the luck will flow in. • Avoid a front door that opens directly to a back door or window. Divert or slow down the energy by placing a screen or plant in the pathway between the doors. • Add plants. They bring life to any environment.
For instance, the Bagua technique used within the Black Hat Sect is the most recognized form and is often represented in books on feng shui. But Flying Stars analysis is the best system to use for choosing color, while Water Dragon is most successful for harnessing energy from water flow. The five elements of feng shui – Earth, water, fire, wood and metal – correlate with five colors – yellow, black, red, green and white. “There’s a lot of information, but it’s easy to learn,” he adds. Hendrickson generalizes feng shui as having six purposes. The first is to analyze existing structures. “The goal is to mitigate glitches and blocks and enhance good energy,” he says. The second is to understand how energy flows in and out of the Earth. The third is a personality analysis that determines how people relate to the land, buildings and each other. The fourth purpose focuses on timing of the universe. The fifth is for planning new buildings or complexes, and the sixth involves burying the dead in auspi-

cious ways. This last purpose is popular in Asian cultures but is the only one Hendrickson doesn’t utilize. Along with six purposes, there are four kinds of energy and four kinds of buildings. One form of energy flows as water and air. Another moves in cycles of time and can be used to identify the energy of a building. Magnetic energy is the Earth’s directional energy and intentional energy is, in Hendrickson’s words, “what you focus on, you attract more of.” The four types of buildings are divided into really lucky, two levels of average luck and really unlucky. An unlucky building often has multiple challenges including financial, mechanical or structural issues.
Hendrickson explains that there are unlucky houses and poor placement of buildings, doors, windows and furniture. “Most people have way too many Earth tones (in their homes),” he adds. By determining what is impacting a person or business the most, feng shui consultants, including Hendrickson, can then map out where water should flow, what direction doors should face and what colors to use. Feng shui can result in improved sleep, finances and health, and results come from making both small and big changes. For one client, that meant cutting down a tree that overshadowed her front door. For a bagel shop in Denver it meant changing the angle of the entrance which lead to increased business.

Make your kitchen shine with Budget Home Center It’s been said the kitchen is the heart of the home, and why shouldn’t it be with top-of-the-line finishes, cutting-edge cabinets and showy lighting to set the scene? The kitchen experts at Budget Home Center in Longmont have a number of great products that will make any kitchen sparkle. Vernetta Angelo, kitchen and bath designer, says the store offers a number of displays that give people great ideas when sprucing up an existing kitchen or starting from scratch. Through a new line of cabinets from Diamond called Logix, organization in the kitchen is now more effective, including roll out trays to built-in bins. Angelo says a popular seller in this line is a pullout trash can. Not only does it make the kitchen look nice, it’s easy and accessible for anyone in the home. Roll out drawers for pots and pans are also ideal because people no longer have to search the back of their cabinets for a certain pan. And with the addition of a broom cabinet you will always have a place to store a broom and other cleaning supplies. The cabinet takes up only 6 inches at the end of the run of the cabinets and will help keep you organized. Kitchen pantries are now anything but the ordinary with roll out shelves that can withstand 250 pounds and shelving attached to the door making use of all available space.
Topping off these unique cabinets are countertops that sell. While granite is still a popular seller, Angelo says synthetic quartz is getting more attention. While it feels like granite and is as thick and strong as the natural stone, synthetic quartz has a varying look that gives people the ultimate in durability and strength. This material is already sealed, so there is no maintenance to keeping the product looking as good as new. For homeowners looking to be eco-friendly, PaperStone offers a recycled paper-based material that is made from post-consumer waste, recycled paper and proprietary, petroleum-free, phenolic resins. Paperstone is the “greenest” architectural surface on the market today. Other trends for countertops include using different colors in the kitchen, such as one color on the counters around the outside and another on the island. Customers may also choose different materials for those two spaces, such as granite along the back wall and a laminate on the island. Moving from the countertop to the backsplash, Angelo adds many customers get stumped with how to make the backsplash a feature point. While many people think they have to go with the same material as the countertop, the best idea is to

From sleek modern lines to stained glass globes and rustic finishes, the styles for lighting depend on the homeowner and the look they seek. While the options are endless and you may feel lost at first, the helpful, friendly staff at Budget takes all the stress out of it. “We will do our best to make it as easy as possible,” says Angelo. “When it comes to picking out colors and materials we will take samples over to the kitchen display that you like and help you visualize.” For more information, stop by Budget Home Center at 780 Boston Ave. or call 303-678-8800.
