Avalanche of Buds in Bloom
Winter marks the appropriate time to buy affordable bulbs to display in the home Netherlands Flower Bulb Co.
Winter winds carry more than ice and snow, they bring a blizzard of colorful spring flowers. For winter is the season when shops and supermarket floral departments are laden with the widest selection of fun, affordable bulb flowers in pots. These winter wonders are largely spring bulbs such as tulips, daffodils and hyacinths that have been brought into flower early by nursery growers using an age-old process called forcing. Forced bulbs might more accurately be called fooled bulbs, as the growers use a combination of cooling and light treatments to trick the bulbs into flowering early. The happy results of this deceptive behavior are stocks of colorful flowers ready to be scooped up and taken home to brighten winter days. Normally sold in modest plastic pots, forced bulbs lend themselves to a variety of creative decorating ideas. At home, they can be featured “as is” or repotted into new containers. Another option is double-potting in which the plastic pot is slipped inside a second, slightly larger and prettier pot called a cachepot (from the French word for hidden pot). No matter how you choose to display forced bulb flowers, following some simple tips will heighten enjoyment of these colorful, midwinter bloomers.
Buy Green and Watch Them Grow For longest enjoyment, choose potted plants with tight buds or barely open flowers, not those in full bloom. In these plants, the flower is fully formed and ready to burst forth for your enjoyment. In winter, it’s just as much fun to watch the green plants grow as it is to watch the velvety flowers bloom. Dress Down or Up Potted bulbs are great displayed casually in
their plastic nursery pots or wrapped in decorative foil. Or, they can easily go upscale dolled up in myriad ways by using more decorative containers, repotting or using the double pot cachepot technique. • To repot: Select a container that has a drainage hole at the bottom (later, place a plate or saucer below the pot to protect table tops from moisture). Transplant the bulbs by gently removing the plants, soil and all, from their nursery pot. Then simply replant into the new pot. For a more dramatic display, consider bringing home several inexpensive pots of flowers to combine by repotting into one larger container. Combining pots is a fun, easy way to creatively “garden” indoors in the middle of winter. • To double pot with a cachepot: Select a decorative container that’s large enough to hold the existing plant, pot and all. In this case the inner nursery pot provides drainage, the outer pot is for show. You can even use this technique in porous containers such as baskets, but you might want to add a plastic tray at the bottom to catch any leaks.
So Easy, So Colorful Water potted bulbs as needed, keeping the soil moist but not soggy. To enjoy maximum bloom time, avoid placing blooming plants in direct sunlight, in drafty spots or next to sources of heat.

Minimize bathroom clutter with these simple tips Article Resource Association
While bathrooms are some of the smallest rooms in the house, they tend to be the areas where a lot of personal items are stored. Typical bathroom sink counters and shelves are crammed full of cosmetics, medications, hair-styling items and dental care tools, looking cluttered and messy and making it difficult to clean them. “Research shows that many homeowners don’t like clutter in the bathroom and seek storage at their fingertips,” says Steve Bissell, president of Robern, a Kohler company and leader in bath storage solutions. For an innovative storage option, Robern has designed a new mirrored cabinet for people who want storage along with the aesthetics of a seamless mirror. The Uplift cabinet isn’t like the standard medicine cabinet over the vanity that opens out and may block your access to the sink. The seamless mirror lifts upward, with a position-hold feature allowing it to stay partly open while you access everything inside. It is deep enough to safely contain medicine bottles, toiletries and a small radio and has an optional mount for an LCD TV. Interior lights and outlets for up to six electronic devices make the Uplift cabinet perfect for bathroom storage so you can have all those items you need at your
fingertips. And, they aren’t cluttering the countertop anymore. If you need additional storage space in the bathroom, try rolling shelves or pull-out baskets that can hide in the cabinets under the sink. You can include one basket for each family member and, since they pull out, you don’t have to crawl on the floor to reach a bottle way in the back of a cabinet. If you don’t have cabinets under your
sink, there are many options for creative storage including bins and baskets to hold items like extra toilet paper, perfumes and colognes or hair-styling accessories. Depending on how tight space is, you can put a cabinet above the toilet, or find a stand-up container to fit between the toilet and the vanity. Another option is to find containers that work well on top of the vanity, allowing you to keep items within close reach.
In the shower, don’t trip on loose bottles of shampoo, conditioner and soap. Find an organizer that fits over the shower head or attaches to the shower wall with suction cups so you can get those items off the sides of the bath or the floor. If you have more than one person using the shower, consider getting each family member a separate organizer. To keep your outlets uncluttered, make your nightlight part of the vanity mirror. The Uplift cabinet has an interior light to illuminate items stored inside and an optional nightlight along the handle that allows you to see well enough to move about the bathroom safely. “Sometimes the most inspired ideas are the simplest,” Bissell says. “Who wouldn’t want to walk into his or her bathroom at night and find a softly glowing cabinet that allows them to navigate easily?“ To provide the best task lighting for your mirror, place lights to the side of the face to avoid shadows, and keep the lights less than 40 inches apart to create the ideal illumination. The Uplift Pendant lights hang from the ceiling directly in front of the mirror for a unique and striking look that provides ideal, even lighting. Make working at home a breeze with a fully furnished home office By Rosemary Sadez Friedmann Scripps Howard News Service
Raise your hand if you work from home. Aha! I knew it. There are many of you. Let me see – one, two, three, 25 million, give or take. In order to be successful, you should have a well-organized, well-designed home office. So let’s get started. Pick the room that will become the office. The guest bedroom is usually a good choice. Furnishings should be minimal and functional. The desk should be big enough to get work done
and so you won’t have constant clutter on it because of lack of space. If necessary, and if space permits, get a desk that wraps around so you have plenty of surface area to spread your work out. A desk and separate credenza works just as well. With all-in-one printers so affordable now, be sure to invest in one. And get one that has all the bells and whistles, because you will find that more options are not only convenient, but can also lead to enhanced creativity. As for computers, most people these days are opt-

ing for laptop computers for portability. The seat behind the desk should be comfortable and fit you perfectly; otherwise, stress and fatigue can set in. Most desk chairs are ergonomically sound, but sit in a few first to be sure you get the one that works best for you. Some might be too big or small for your size, so try them out before you buy. The bedroom closet can be easily converted into a storage area for files and supplies by visiting a closet company and having it design one that customfits your needs.

And now for the decor. Pick a theme. Make sure it is something uniquely yours so you feel at home in your office. The more comfortable it feels, the better you’ll be able to work. Carry that theme throughout the room with wall colors or wallpaper, artwork, carpet and furniture color. Don’t get too busy and don’t overdecorate, because you don’t want to make the space feel crowded or messy. Now it’s time to get to work. Take time for a post-snow garden checkup
Carol O’Meara Colorado State University Extension
The recent snowfall was a welcome end to the year, and if you spent any time shoveling, you’ll know that this fluffy stuff was heavy with water. The moisture is welcome, trickling into soil that softened under the insulating snow. Water during winter keeps tree and shrub roots healthy, helping the plant survive mid-summer heat. But storms like the ones that came in December leave side effects gardeners should be alert for, such as broken branches, light and air starved lawns, or trees with girdled trunks. Now that the ibuprofen has done its job and we can appreciate the slowly receding whiteness, take time for a post-snow checkup on the landscape to prevent disease and larger garden problems. • Prune off broken or cracked branches in shrubs and trees. Where the bark is shredded from the tear, surgically remove the dangling bits with a sharp knife. There is no need for wound paint, sealants or Elmer’s glue; woody plants will seal the wound them-
selves. • Branches larger than 2 inches in diameter should be removed in sections or their weight can cause more tearing of the bark. Make your first cut 12 inches outward from where you want the final prune to be, sawing upward from the underside through one-third of the branch. Then saw downward through the branch 1 inch outward from the undercut. At the point of no return, branch weight will snap the limb, but the undercut will stop the bark from tearing. Make your last cut just outside the branch collar, the spot where branch and trunk join. Branches larger than 4 inches in diameter should be removed by an arborist. • Check junipers soon for signs of cracked and broken branches. After heavy snow like this, many look like they have cowlicks; prune off any broken branches to prevent disease. With junipers, pruning takes a little thought and art to regain form. If possible, snip branches to just in front of a growing side shoot.
• Voles foraging for food strip bark from young tree trunks, tunneling under the snow to stay safe from predators. Two of these small, mouse-like creatures, the Meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) and Prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster), are common along the Front Range. Junipers, apple and pear, or other thin-barked trees are most at risk. Voles girdle the trunk and often kill branches or the entire plant. Pull snow drifts away from tree trunks, leaving it piled up under the drip line (outer tips of branches) of the plant to melt into the soil. • Broken rose canes should be lightly pruned back to just past the damage. Winter is not done with us yet; freezing temperatures may still kill back canes previously blanketed by insulating snow. Leave as much of the rose as possible now, saving the final pruning for spring when the canes green up. • We might see Pink Snow Mold (Microdochium nivale), particularly in the areas where snow lingered
on the lawn. Once the ground is soggy and soft, alternating weather of thaw and snow cover (or frost) aggravates this disease. Most turf grass is susceptible, particularly those with heavy thatch. Pink Snow Mold appears as water-soaked spots, rapidly growing to a foot or more in diameter. With the pinkish border of fungal growth along the outside edge, this disease leaves lawns with a festive tie-dyed appearance. The spots often have a frog-eye center of green, turning reddish brown to tan. The disease will subside once turf dries out under warm sunny weather. Lightly raking the spot to lift grass blades for faster drying helps, but don’t rake into healthy grass, since this disease is easily spread by contaminated tools. Overseeding affected spots will speed recovery of the area. Add value, living space with a basement Article Resource Association
Economists predict the worst of the recession is over, but the housing market still has a way to go to complete recovery. It pays to think positively and improve your home, both to boost its value as the market recovers, and to enhance its livability for your family now. Improving your home is usually a good investment, as long as you focus on improvements that offer high return on your dollar. Renovated kitchens and baths increase a home’s value, as does a great deck or patio. Finishing the basement remains a good way to improve value and livability while also expanding square footage. Think of it as double the return on investment – not only are you creating an appealing space in your home, you’re actually
making the home bigger for potential buyers who want maximum living space. Finishing a basement is a favorite technique of home flippers – investors who purchase distressed properties for a low price, renovate them and sell for a profit. While flipping may not be in your future, you can still borrow a page from the flipper’s handbook and finish your basement to improve your home’s value. One hit home improvement TV show bought a home in Hamden, Conn., to flip. The 1,200 square foot Cape Codstyle home, built in 1950 had fallen into major disrepair. While extensive interior and exterior renovations could give the home curb appeal and entice buyers, the flippers knew that finishing the basement would be a fast, cost-effective
way to add living space and square footage in a neighborhood where they were competing with homes that offered more updates. Many unfinished basements are dark, damp and don’t provide homeowners any enjoyment of the space other than use for storage. The flippers used the Owens Corning Basement Finishing System to quickly finish this basement, giving it a new life with light and usable space. Where normal drywall construction could have taken several weeks and blown the flippers’ renovation schedule, using the Basement Finishing System allowed them to finish the basement in just two weeks. The renovation added 500 square feet of finished living space to the small home, and ensured potential buyers found
a bright, inviting space when they toured during the open house. Finishing a basement is also a great way to improve the healthfulness of a home. A dark, damp basement that could have been a breeding ground for mold and mildew associated with respiratory disorders instead became a dry, bright and tidy showpiece area of the home. While you might not have
your own full-time construction crew like a home flipper, or the spotlight of a national TV show, when it comes to finishing a basement you don’t need to. Professional installers can finish a basement in about two weeks using the Owens Corning Basement Finishing System. The system features built-in thermal and acoustic benefits, and the walls are durable, resisting dents and stains.

Agent provides free info for homeowners facing hardships Local real estate agent and community advocate, Jim Green of Wright Kingdom, announced the creation of a new information Web site for Longmont-area homeowners in distress. The site, http://hosted.cdpe.com/ jimgreenhelps, contains vital facts about the options available to these homeowners, to help them make educated decisions. “I developed this site with my community in mind,” Green says. “When faced with the possibility of foreclosure, I’ve seen too many homeowners make poor choices, even walking away from their homes without calling their lender or a real estate agent. These people didn’t know the options available, or even how to find any information on their situation. I want more for the people of Longmont, and more comes with making informed decisions.” Green The Web site is a hub for information on the issues for struggling homeowners, putting all the necessary information in one, easy-to-use location. The information and materials located on the site are regularly updated to reflect market changes, trends, new lender requirements and industry updates. Green earned the Certified Distressed Property Expert designation, which provides real estate professionals with specific understanding of the complex issues confronting the industry. Damage to Kewpie doll lowers value significantly By Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson Scripps Howard News Service
Dear Helaine and Joe: I am sending pictures of a Kewpie doll that I have had for some years. About 3 inches high, he is made of bisque porcelain. I have not been able to find out anything about him and would like your assessment. He has a chip on the back of his head – I have enclosed a photo of that, too. Thank you. – A.D., DuBois, Pa. Dear A.D.: The beloved character with the impish topknot and the small blue wings sprang from the mind of illustrator Rose O’Neill. The name is derived from Cupid, the Roman god of beauty and nonplatonic love. It is reported that O’Neill based the image on drawings of her little brother that she made when she was a child herself. According to O’Neill, “Cupid gets you into trouble, and the Kewpies get you out.” Kewpies were supposed to embody O’Neill’s philosophy of “Do good deeds in a funny way. The world needs to laugh or at least smile more than it does.” Most sources say that Kewpies first appeared in the Ladies’ Home Journal in 1909. The Kewpies were an instant success, and before long, merchandising began to spring up around them. At first, there were paper dolls that could be cut out of the magazine. But O’Neill kept getting requests for a doll that children could hold, so one was sculpted as a model and the J.D. Kestner
Co. of Waltershausen, Germany, began producing them in bisque porcelain in 1913. Other German companies made all-bisque Kewpies, but they can also be found with bisque heads and composition bodies. Bisque, incidentally, is unglazed porcelain that has been fired only once, which leaves the surface with a sort of grainy texture that some say feels a bit like human skin (yes, some people find that to be creepy). Over the years, Kewpies have been made in celluloid, composition, hard plastic and vinyl. Most of the Kewpie figures are standing with their legs together, arms jointed, their eyes to the side — and naked as a proverbial blue jay. However, a class of Kewpies, called Action Kewpies, depicts the character doing various things. There is a Kewpie “thinker,” a fireman, farmer, governor, mayor and soldier. There is a Kewpie with a cat, one with a character called Doodle Dog (valuable), one at a tea table and one in a bisque swing (also valuable), among many others. The example in question is called Kewpie “traveler” and shows the character, which should be 31/2 inches tall, carrying a valise-style suitcase and an umbrella. These are

beyond charming, and in perfect condition, they have an insurancereplacement value in the $300 to $400 range. Unfortunately, the damage on this piece may seem small and even trifling, but to a collector, it is a serious defect that will decrease the value significantly. In the photograph, it appears that this can be easily repaired, but still, the value has probably dropped by half, or perhaps even a bit more.

Limit winter wear on your home Article Resource Association
No matter what part of the country you live in, the winter months can be downright abusive on your home. From frozen Minnesotans dropping heaps of water-logged clothing on the floor after digging out of 5 feet of snow, to tanned Floridians grinding gritty sand into their carpeting, every home takes a beating in the winter. As harsh as we can be on our most expensive investment, a variety of easy and inexpensive precautions can greatly diminish the amount of winter wear and tear imposed on our homes.
A Foot in the Door It all starts at the doorway. For northerners, winter means traipsing in and out of the house with mud, salt and snow on your shoes. Being bundled up carrying groceries many times means you nudge the door open with those muddy boots, leaving scratched paint and stains on perhaps the most visible part of your home. A simple solution to this is investing in a durable kickplate. Kickplates are available in a variety of sizes, finishes and quality. Choose
something that complements the door’s hardware (doorknob and knocker) and will be an appropriate size.
Baseboards that say “Bring it On” Baseboards are often overlooked until they are so dirty and worn that they stand out like a sore thumb. By design, baseboards are meant to preserve the lower portion of walls and withstand normal bumps and scuffs. However, choosing an appropriate paint for these baseboards can make all the difference when it comes to durability. Paints designed especially for heavy traffic and easy cleaning are best for baseboards. Look for interior latex paints infused with stain resistant materials. Clean Carpets Tile, laminate and wood flooring are incredibly easy to clean because they are not extremely porous. Carpet, on the other hand, is designed to be lush, meaning there are ample nooks, crannies and spaces for dirt and grime. Investing in a stain-resistant carpet cleaner that repels substances from entering your carpet will maintain your
carpet. Keeping spot carpet cleaners when minor spills occur is essential.
Slip and Slide Even though your house may have tile, laminate or wood floors, tracking outdoor substances such as muddy wa-
ter or slush on them can add wear and tear, especially during the holiday season. Simple carpet runners can help prevent these unsightly and potentially dangerous issues.

Even in the midst of economic turbulence, it is important to continue to invest in your home as an asset. Now more than ever, improvements should go beyond adding aesthetics and provide return on investment (ROI). One home improvement that provides ROI in any climate is awnings. Awnings, both aesthetically appealing and functional, can provide savings on home cooling costs by reducing heat gain, and therefore the load on air conditioners. In most homes, more cooling energy is lost through glass doors and windows than any other part of the house. No one wants to see their dollars flying out the window in the form of energy costs. 04-140562

Do Not Be Driven By Greed One big mistake many sellers make is to get a little greedy, particularly if the first offer is above the minimum acceptable price. Then the negotiation becomes a game of how much they can get. Remember, a successful sale means everyone walks away feeling happy. If you get so greedy that the buyer walks away, you’ve let the deal get the best of you. You should also know that there are fewer buyers out there, and if you lose a buyer it might take you a long time to find another one.

Installing your way to shower power
By Marilyn Kennedy Melia bankrate.com
By Ed Del Grande HGTVPro.com
Along with a new showerhead, you’ll need an adjustable wrench, two pairs of slip joint pliers, Teflon tape and electrical tape. Wrap a small amount of electrical tape around the teeth of the slip joint pliers to help prevent scratching of the chrome shower-arm pipe coming out of the wall. Keep the chrome shower-arm pipe from spinning by supporting it with the slip joint pliers. You’ll be removing the showerhead from the chrome showerarm pipe by turning it counterclockwise with the adjustable wrench. Size and place the adjustable wrench in the flat slot of the showerhead threaded fitting. If there is no slot on your present showerhead fitting, use the second pair of slip joint pliers to remove the showerhead threaded fitting. With a good, strong grip on both wrenches, slowly turn the old showerhead counterclockwise while holding the chrome shower-arm pipe firmly in place. Keep turning the showerhead fitting by resetting the wrench when necessary. Once the showerhead is loose enough to turn by
hand, set the tools aside and finish the removal by hand. Installing the new showerhead is even easier. Make sure the chrome shower-arm threads are clean and apply a few turns of Teflon tape to the threads of the arm, following the direction of the threads; this should be clockwise. Now prep your new showerhead according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This may include inserting washers or filter screens needed for installation. With a good hold on the showerhead, start turning the head’s threaded fitting, clockwise as well, onto the chrome shower-arm threads by hand. Once snug, place the pliers back on to the shower-arm pipe to hold it in place. Now continue to tighten the new showerhead fitting with the adjustable wrench. Once the head fitting is tightened, remove any excess strands of Teflon tape and polish the chrome arm.

Many home sellers are losing money ... precisely because they’re determined not to lose money. So why won’t your home sell? One reason homes are languishing on the market is because owners are suffering from “sunk cost fallacy,” observes Ohio State University economist John Kagel. A condition recognized not by physicians, but rather by behavioral finance experts, this fallacy describes the reluctance people have to selling for less than they’ve paid or put into a home, even when hanging on, waiting for the right price, will ultimately prove costly. It can be hard to shake this faulty logic, even when homeowners’ income has dropped precipitously or they’re living off a limited amount of money, like a severance package, says financial planner William Suplee of Structured Asset Management, in Paoli, Pa. Here are three questions to determine whether you could benefit by losing money on a home sale. 1. Will you slash your housing costs with a move? Owners under financial pressure who could find relief on their monthly cash flow by moving to a lower-cost home that they either buy or rent are the ones grappling with the sunk cost fallacy. Suplee tries to help owners get a clear view of
their best option by preparing spreadsheets that lay out the costs of different living arrangements. Don’t forget all the ancillary expenses, like commuting costs, that go along with a particular housing choice, adds Lexington, Ky., financial planner D. Scott Neal. Laying out the annual costs of staying in a home that cost his client $800,000 several years ago was the only way to convince her that she would soon deplete her savings if she stayed put, says Rapid City, S.D., financial planner Rick Kahler. Even though she’d probably sell for about $300,000 less than she paid, the monthly outlay was unsustainable, Kahler says. The pain of loss is softened, somewhat, he adds, because she can buy a home that is also valued less than it was several years ago. And, the recently passed tax credit of up to $6,500 for repeat buyers under certain income levels also applies to many in this position. 2. Do you know what’s a realistic price? Recognizing that conditions dictate selling at a loss doesn’t mean that you’re ready to accept any offer, however. Indeed, experts stress that the only way to proceed confidently with selling at a loss is to thoroughly research the housing market in your area. Ask your agent to provide a lot of recent prices on sales of comparable homes. In some states, agents can also provide recent sales data by getting the prices of homes under contract, says John Huggins, president of
Coldwell Banker Legacy Real Estate Group in Bowling Green, Ky. Home sellers can also ask to tour other properties for sale to get an idea of how their home compares with other properties being offered at various price levels, he says. Homeowners who owe more in mortgage than they can likely net in a sale have to investigate whether they’ll have to add in their own cash to pay off the loan, or whether the mortgage lender will agree to accept a lower amount. In cases where owners have to pay out of pocket to sell, that outlay could alter the advantage of moving, says Neal. 3. If you hold out, could you avoid a loss? Going against the natural inclination to avoid loss means that you’ve analyzed the cost of holding the property and are reasonably confident prices won’t spring back up. The National Association of Realtors forecasts home prices nationwide will end 2010 up just under 4 percent from the end of this year. Moody’s Economy.com predicts prices will stabilize in mid-2010, but there will be no appreciation. Economy.com housing economist Celia Chen expects some middle and higher-end housing at risk for further decline next year, and thinks that some homeowners will not see prices return to what they paid for at least several years. Real estate trends are local, adds Huggins. He advises looking at prices for similar homes in your area and gauging demand against inventories.
