Keeping holiday plants alive Gardeners beware of offering advice
Chaos turns into

Order seeds early, start them indoors in February, plant more perennials, shrink my lawn and grow more cool-season crops. These are just a few of my favorite things I vow to do at the start of each new year. You know what I’m talking about. We gardeners are a pretty ambitious group. Unfortunately, my resolutions are often based on fantasy, not reality. But this is the year – isn’t that what we always tell ourselves? – I’m finally going to get those to-dos crossed off my list. Some years are better than others. But overall, I always want to do more. I’m sure it goes along with a commonly known fact about a gardener’s garden: It’s never really finished. In the hopes that you find some common ground in the shared frustration of not get-

ting it all done, here are a few of my outstanding resolutions for 2010 (and likely beyond). • Install window boxes. It would add so much to the look of the front of the house. • Plant the window boxes. Set aside an extra hour for this. • Install a pond. How long have I been longing for this? Let me count the years. • Use more containers. It’s such an easy addition for high impact. What’s taking me so long? • Incorporate more garden art and hardscapes. I write about the four-season garden. It would be nice if I did more of it in my own garden. • Study botanical Latin more. Which is it again, clem-a-tis or clem-at-is? • Do something with the seed catalogs this year other than throw them in a pile for later review. They really do deserve to be looked at more.
They’re mini-encyclopedias of plants. So much information, so little time. • Find a home for the plants I’ve had in nursery pots since moving from Atlanta. Three years and counting is more than enough time to prove a plant’s container hardiness. • Install a stone walkway from the front stoop to the street. This goes along with my window-box project. They would add so much to the curb appeal, and create an inviting approach. • Install pea-gravel pathways in the backyard. I love the sound that gravel makes underfoot, and it’s a great way to reduce runoff. • Remove the invasive volunteer plants that are overtaking my backyard beds. This should be on everyone’s to-do list. • Propagate more plants from cuttings. Aside from the fact that I love doing this, the

money saved in making more plants is amazing. • Save more seeds. Especially heirlooms. It’s good for the wallet and a great family activity. • Actually plant more of the seeds I save. What is it with me? Those seeds only last so long. • Take pictures of my garden more often to show the changes through the seasons and years. (And once I do all the things on my list, those pictures

Keep holiday cacti alive and beautiful into the new year
By Kathie Bond-Borie Family Features
With their exotic-looking flowers adorning gracefully drooping stems, holiday cacti are favorite plants. But once you take the colored foil off, how do you keep the plant healthy and happy for the New Year? These spineless, succulent cacti are native to the Brazilian rainforest, which gives an indication of the kind of care they require. Unlike desert-dwelling cacti, these plants need to be kept moist, and they don’t need full sun. Bright, indirect light and evenly moist soil most closely replicate their natural environment, where they are typically found growing in pockets of leaf mold high in the trees. Mimic these conditions and your plants will have the best chance of thriving. A plant in bloom will often drop some flowers when it’s brought into a new environment, often because of sudden temperature changes. To reduce this loss, keep plants away from heat sources such as hot air ducts and fireplaces. Holiday cacti grow well in our typical 70-degree homes, and turning down the thermostat at night helps them, too. Give them an acidic

soil with high organic matter content, such as a mixture of 60 percent peat moss and 40 percent perlite. Once the plant has finished flowering, reduce watering but don’t let the leaves shrivel, and place it in a cooler location for the next several months. When new growth begins in spring, begin fertilizing at half strength and continue until fall. If possible, set the plant outside in the shade for the summer. If you leave the plant outside (temperature permitting), it will naturally begin blooming in late fall. To encourage blooms at Christmas time, in mid October start giving the plant 14 to 16 hours of complete darkness at night. Move it into a closet, cover it with a box, or place it in a room that you don’t use at night. It will take at least three weeks of this treatment for the buds to show about one-eighth-inch long, at which point you can stop the long-night treatment. Holiday cacti flower best when kept somewhat root bound. Every three or four years, repot your plant by removing it from the pot, cutting off about one-third of the outer roots, and repotting it with fresh mix.

Don’t spend all day cleaning. Home economist Deborah Taylor-Hough tells how to get it all done in 10 minutes. • Make a game of it. Set a timer for 10 minutes, and tell the kids to pick up as much as they can before the alarm goes off. • Run a load of non-dishes in the dishwasher when it isn’t quite full. Clean things like stove burners, vases, candlesticks and even children’s plastic toys contained in a mesh bag. • To keep bathroom mirrors from fogging up, rub them with dish soap and let them dry. It will take vigorous rubbing to work the soap in, but it should prevent fog from forming for up to two weeks. • If more than one child uses a bathroom, label old shoeboxes with each child’s name, to keep the toiletries separate. • Clean the dust off stuffed animals by running them through the dryer on fluff cycle with a dryer sheet. • Time’s Up Cleaning Strategy: Take just five minutes a day to tidy up each room. This technique is not to be used as a substitute for deep cleaning, but it will keep the clutter under control. • Vacuum first and then dust, so the vacuum won’t kick dust back into the air and onto your furniture.
• Clean dingy vinyl dolls by slipping a soft sock onto your hand, then dipping the end of the sock first in water, then in baking soda. Gently rub the doll with the soda. • To absorb refrigerator odors, place an open bowl filled with two to three charcoal briquettes on a back shelf.

Settled In Family finishes the third level in their dream house
Candice Olson HGTV
Just a few months after the birth of their first child, Jaime and Kyle bought their dream house in their dream neighborhood. Settling into family life was great, but soon Jaime had to get back to work. The problem was that she works from home, and her office was on the third floor in a huge space that doubled as a gym and display area for the memorabilia from Kyle’s days as a professional rugby player. The open-concept room had a lot of potential, but wasn’t working at any level. Jaime wanted an office that was comfortable and motivating. Kyle wanted a masculine gym. And they both wanted to incorporate a lounge space for the whole family. So I grabbed my team and prepared to get this space back in the game – stylishly and beautifully. I started by choosing a color palette. I wanted to keep a masculine vibe but add feminine touches. The plywood floor had a beautiful butterscotch shade, so I used that as my jumping-off point and rounded out my palette with deep browns, cool creams and inky charcoals.
I painted the walls in a light-straw shade except for the feature wall by the gym equipment that I painted in a dramatic blueblack. I then mapped out the room into three areas – an office, a lounge and a gym. I created the office area by the window, so Jaime could have a nice view. On the window, I put up simple linen drapes with a striped band and textured woven blinds for light diffusion. I kept Jaime’s father’s old banker desk, but repainted it and flanked it with mirror-backed bookcases in a darkespresso finish. I gave Jaime a comfortable plush brown work chair, put an upholstered, button-detailed pin board above the desk and added a family portrait gallery on the wall beside her desk. Across from the office area, at the dark feature wall, I started organizing the new lounge. On one side of the wall, I put in a long bar counter in beautiful white quartz, a sink, a bar fridge and a coffeemaker. Next to the bar area, I put in a dark-wood console for the television and a lot of storage cabinets. Across from the television, I installed a
large, L-shaped sectional in a light-gray-andblack tweed pattern, a coffee table and a lot of pillows in menswear-inspired fabrics such as argyle and pinstripes. I also put in two chairs in sleek, black leather. Then I added a small console table and put a funky 1950sinspired light pendant in the living space. This whole furniture arrangement sits atop a big area rug in a brown checked pattern. I still had to incorporate Kyle’s gym equipment. So I put down rugged carpet tiles in one corner of the room, put in some lighting, arranged his workout gear – and then covered the area up with sliding woven panels to keep it out of sight. This room had finally made its transformation from locker room to multifunctional room. By organizing the space into zones, mixing the masculine and feminine, and playing with colors and textures, I toned down the sports and turned up the style. Now it’s a perfect space for the family to work in or workout in. Dear Helaine and Joe: These appear to be old jewelry boxes. The black one has “336” on the bottom. Printed on the bottom is “Have Crest.” Any information would be appreciated. Thank you. – W.B., Arcadia, Neb. Dear W.B.: These two pieces are indeed jewelry boxes or jewelry containers. The black one is just that – a small decorative box intended to hold jewelry on top of milady’s dresser. Objects similar to the second piece were used as pin trays, ashtrays or “jewel trays.” But since this piece has a textile lining (probably satin), it was certainly not an ashtray or a pin tray (the pins would have snagged in the fabric and been difficult to retrieve). It is a small, open jewel tray. The two fancy handles suggest that it never had a lid and was designed to be a luxurious container in which the lady of the house placed her
rings or other small jewelry items before going to bed. The idea: She would put on her baubles in the morning so there was no need to store them away in a box. While the jewel tray was simply a pretty receptacle for short-term usage, the 5-inchwide metal box was typically used for more long-term storage, allowing the lady of the house to choose her adornment before she attended a special occasion. The metal box was probably once silver-plated, and it was likely made from Britannia metal, a type of pewter commonly used for silverplating in the middle to late 19th century and beyond. Britannia consists of tin hardened with copper and antimony. The insurance-replacement value of this Wave Crest jewel tray is between $100 and $125. The metal box is a bit less, at $75 to $95. Streamline your kitchen to simplify life If your quest for a simpler life has led you to the kitchen, you’ll find a lot of opportunities for streamlining. But contrary to what you might think, the most valuable ideas come from examining your already established work style, not by developing new habits. “People put too much effort into antiquated ideas like the work triangle, which isn’t individualized enough to work well,” says Chicago designer Jessica Kalina, of Kalina Kitchen & Bath. “Most designers today start with how you work in the kitchen, from sink to fridge to dishes, and then design a personal solution for simplicity instead of expecting you to change your behavior to fit a one-size-fits-all kitchen organization.” – HGTV 04-140562

While the tumultuous real estate market has many people hunkered down hoping it will all blow over, proactive homeowners are looking beyond the uncertainty. They’re weighing a decision about whether to refinance their current mortgage or trade up to a house they couldn’t afford three years ago. Making a move more alluring, interest rates continue to hover at 4 to 5 percent and tax credits of up to $8,000 for first-time homebuyers and up to $6,500 for buyers who have been in their homes for at least five of the last eight years consecutively are available. But before you take the leap, real estate professionals caution that the same basic rules about buying a home still apply. Here are four questions to ask yourself: How long do I plan to stay in the new home? The rule of thumb is to stay in a home for at least five years to make a new mortgage worthwhile. Do I really need to move or just want to grab a deal? Can I cover the costs to close and relocate? With every winner, there’s usually a loser, and you could be both if you find a great deal on a bigger house but can’t sell your current home. If I stay in my current home, does it make sense to refinance and maybe add that extra bedroom or build a deck to improve the property? Take a deep breath and analyze what you really need, not what the market seems to be telling you. “The decision depends on the individual. Are they
looking to move because their family has grown or has their job changed locations, or do they want a shorter commute? Those are reasons to look at buying,” says Bernard Markstein, senior vice president of the National Association of Home Builders in Washington, D.C. But don’t move just for the sake of moving, says Elizabeth Blakeslee, an associate broker with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Washington, D.C. Now is a great time to buy, but prospective homebuyers should make sure that’s what they really should do. “You have to figure out your motivating factors,” Blakeslee says. “If you’re just trying to get a deal, you might want to think about it a little longer. These low interest rates are certainly a consideration for people, but as with every decision in life, you have to ask yourself, ‘What is my goal?’” Markstein says there are several good reasons to buy a house now. “Rates are historically low; it’s essentially a buyer’s market. And for people moving up, obviously they won’t get as much for their own home as they would have a few years ago. But if they’re reasonable and set a good price and they find another house at a good price, the two together could be a real benefit,” Markstein says. If you’re not really looking to move, but you just don’t want to miss the real estate bargain boat, Markstein says it might be smarter to stay put. “If you look around and say, ‘I like my neighborhood, I like the schools and the services, I like my
Zinnia proves beautiful and undemanding Special to the Times-Call
A stunning combination of new and old describes Zahara Starlight Rose. Zinnias are old-fashioned flowers but these rose and white flowers are a new bicolor for this sun loving class of annuals. Other new traits are the proven resistances to leaf spot and mildew, which can devastate healthy plants and cause an early death. These superior qualities resulted in long lasting zinnia plants that provide generous color all season. Zahara Starlight Rose is heat and drought tolerant and easy to grow in gardens. It is a perfect plant for the novice gardener because it is so undemanding with a maximum number of blooms. The mature plants are midsized, about 12 to 14 inches tall and wide, large enough to make a bold statement in containers or patio urns. Gardeners will be able to grow Zahara Starlight Rose from seed or plants.
house, and I don’t really want to move,’ then you have two choices,” Markstein says. “You can do a simple refi, and that’s straightforward and will save you money in most cases. Or if you have enough equity, you can refinance and add a room or upgrade something in your house.” Loans based on actual equity homeowners have sunk into their property for years are worth asking about. But if you bought your house in the last four years and didn’t put much money down, Markstein says to forget refinancing. Home prices have come down to levels seen around 2003. “If you’ve been paying your mortgage for six to 10 years, chances are you have built up a lot of equity,” he says. Refis for home improvement usually pay off if you stay in your home for at least another three years, Markstein says. Again, the time may be right. Contractors’ fees have come down substantially from the real estate boom. Blakeslee says if you’re on the fence about whether to sell and move or stay and improve, do your research. Get your credit score. Find out what kind of mortgage you could qualify for. Look at the tax credit deals which expire June 30, 2010 (although binding contracts must be signed by April 30), and figure out your real motivation. If it’s just to save money, you could stay where you are and add a little extra to every month’s mortgage payment. “You’d be surprised how that adds up and saves you money in the long run,” Blakeslee says.
