All America Selections are all-stars for the garden Getting your garden started seems simple: you dream big, make a wish list, then with warm weather, head to the garden center to pick out plants. But as those doors slide open to the warm, moist air of the greenhouse, a daunting tableau unfolds: bench after bench filled with seedlings, rolling racks bursting with trays and containers crowding Carol O’Meara floors, until all that’s left is a narrow Colorado State University Extension path snaking down aisles. At this point, gardeners react either in frenzy, gathering everything within grasp until their cart resembles a Dr. Seuss tower; or in fear, by turning on their heels and fleeing to a more orderly locale. This is understandable when facing an ocean of plants. How do you know which plants will work, or what to avoid? “When I first started gardening and went to the store, I was in awe of what they offered, overwhelmed by the number of plants available,” says Diane Blazek, executive director for All America Selections, an organization dedicated to testing and recommending plants for gardens in North America (all-americaselections.org/). “But most gardeners just want to know ‘what’s going to do well in my yard?’” Putting plants through rigorous trials since 1932, All

America Selections winnows out the best of the best, finding tough plants that are star performers in almost every garden. Capturing a coveted AAS Award Winner designation is like getting the Better Homes and Gardens Seal of Approval, says Blazek, because if they do well in 30 trial gardens across the United States, they’ll probably grow in your backyard. “The seed breeding world is competitive; everybody wants their products in front of gardeners. There must be a way to ensure that they live up to their claims, if not, breeders can say whatever they want but it’s not always true,” she says. To put their claims to the test, corporations, individuals and universities developing plants enter the yearly trials. “We have plants from large seed companies, but we like to give smaller guys a chance too, like Gordon Smith. He was breeding peppers in his Illinois backyard, entered and won – now we have Cajun Belle, a pepper developed in his home yard.” Once the breeder has what they think is a winner, the journey from seed to celebrity spans a season. Contestants are entered in November and seed is dispersed to gardens across the country for trialing the following summer. The number of places a plant is tested depends on its category: vegetables are trialed at 32 locations, cool season bedding plants in 25 and flowers in 42 gardens. Judges are given strict guidelines for growing these

plants: do nothing special. “We insist that they treat them like an average gardener would so we’ll see how they are on their own. Don’t spray them, fertilize them more or treat them special,” Blazek says. Throughout the season, contenders go through a litany of competitions, where contestants are judged against one another, plus two to four outsiders – ringers that excel in certain traits. “Not a lot of trial programs have testing like ours. We compare them against one plant for size, and another one for disease resistance; then they compete against a third plant to see which is earliest, or a fourth for bloom size. An AAS winner has to be better than them all, in every category.” Look for 2011’s AAS winners this year: Gaillardia Arizona Apricot (Gailardia x grandiflora), a blanket flower that blooms all summer; Ornamental Kale Glamour Red (Brassica oleracea), for intense color that shows off in fall; Salvia Summer Jewel Red (Salvia coccinea), with brilliant red, early spikes of bloom; Viola Shangri-La Marina (Viola cornuta), a pale blue, mounding viola for cool locales. The small pumpkin Hijinks and two tomatoes perfect for containers, Lizzano and Terenzo, round out the winners. Carol O’Meara is a horticulture entomologist with the Colorado State University Extension office at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in Longmont. If they can’t or won’t make you happy, then you should consult with a litigation attorney with experience in seller disclosure issues. If you bought the property as a short sale, the sellers likely don’t have any cash to make things right, and suing them might be a complete waste of your time and money. If this is the case, you might be stuck for the cost of fixing these problems, unless you can prove that the seller’s agent knew these problems existed, had a legal obligation to disclose these issues to you and failed to tell you. Make your home efficient • Replace washers as needed or call a plumber for bigger jobs. Small leaks can waste precious water. • Give your kitchen an extra-thorough cleanup. • Store bins of untreated kitty litter or traction grit at key points along paths, and in the car. • Flip, spin and vacuum. Gardening indoors will keep your green thumb working Snow and frost often bring bittersweet feelings for gardeners. On one hand, you reflect warmly on all that was accomplished during the season – be it a bumper tomato harvest or vivid memories of the color displays during each part of the growing season. On the other hand, you can’t wait to get the spade in the ground in the spring and it’s driving you crazy. But just because the outdoor growing season has ended, there’s no reason you have to put your garden on the back burner. If your thumb remains perpetually
green, there are plenty of ways to satisfy your gardening itch during the off season. While you can spend the colder months doing your homework for next year’s garden, it’s also possible to continue the physical part of gardening within the comfort of your home. Improvements to grow lights have made it easier than ever to bring your garden inside. Once known for devouring electricity, grow lights have become efficient, making indoor gardening a more realistic option. For example, SonnyLight LED grow light systems use only 15 watts per unit or about $12 per year. Product developer Leo “Sonny” Hayes noted that plants use only a small portion of the visible light spectrum, enabling him to design a light using only the necessary amount of energy needed for plants to grow. If you’re wondering what types of things you can do with an indoor garden, here are a few ideas: • Start your seedlings for next year. Rather than paying for greenhouse seedlings, grow them yourself. SonnyLight provides the traditional garden flat, for easy
transplanting outside once the weather warms. • Plant flowers to brighten up your house. Flowers can add a little extra life to dark winter days. Use them to freshen up your living space or let your children take care of them while they grow before taking them to their rooms for decoration. • Grow herbs for cooking. If you’re used to cooking with fresh vegetables, one way to liven up your winter meals is to use grow lights for nurturing fresh herbs. You
can even spend the winter with gardenfresh tomatoes grown under these lights, and you can spice up tomato-based pastas with fresh basil and oregano. • Take care of your exotic plants. Keep orchids and perennials that are accustomed to warmer climates happy by making sure they get enough light indoors when it can’t be provided outside. Using grow lights during the winter may allow you to experiment with more exotic species in your garden anytime of the year.

Before buying a home, get financing in order By Dana Dratch
bankrate.com
You might be ready to buy a home, but are you armed with the knowledge you need? Do you know about credit score requirements? Are you familiar with flexible standards on Federal Housing Administration loans? Whether you are a first-time homebuyer or an experienced owner, buying a house requires a “preflight check,” in the words of Barry Zigas, director of housing policy for the Consumer Federation of America. “It’s a brave, new world with respect to credit requirements for mortgages,” says John Ulzheimer, founder of 2StepCredit.com and formerly of FICO, which pioneered credit scoring. One old rule still applies: The higher your credit score, the lower your down payment and monthly payments. On the other end, a score of 700 to 720 will get you a good deal and 750 and above will garner the best rates on the market, Ulzheimer says. Improve your chances by pulling your credit reports and ensuring you’re not being unfairly penalized for old, paid or settled debts, Zigas says. Stop applying for new credit a year before you apply for financing. And keep the moratorium in place until after you close on your home, Ulzheimer says. The buyer’s mantra: Get a home that’s financially comfortable. Various rules of thumb will help you determine how much home you can afford. If you’re using FHA financing, your home payment can’t exceed 31 percent of your monthly income. But, with some mitigating factors, FHA will let you go higher.
For conventional loans, a safe formula is that home expenses should not exceed 28 percent of your gross monthly income, says Susan Tiffany, director of consumer periodicals for the Credit Union National Association. Improve your chances by trying on that financial obligation long before you sign the mortgage papers, Tiffany says. Before you home shop, calculate the mortgage payment for the home in your intended price range, along with the increased expenses (such as taxes, insurance and utilities). Depending on your credit and financing, you’ll typically need to save enough money to put down 3.5 to 20 percent. You’ll also need money to pay closing costs, which run from $2,300 to $4,000. Improve your chances by setting aside money every month. A good rule of thumb: On average, you’ll spend 2.5 to 3 percent of your home’s value annually on upkeep, repairs and maintenance, says Joseph Gyourko, chairman of the real estate department at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. For serious home shoppers, “the No. 1 thing is they better have everything in order,” says Dick Gaylord, past president of the National Association of Realtors. That means that, before the real home shopping begins, you want to get financing in place. The preapproval process is “much more extensive” than it was a few years ago, he says. Improve your chances by getting financing in place “before you walk through the first house,” Gaylord says. Otherwise, he says, “How do you know how much you can afford?”

Burl bowl is knot too shabby
Proudly Serving Buyers and Sellers Since 1976
The fast and easy way to find a home that fits your price range....
Dear Helaine and Joe: I found this 18inch-diameter circular bowl on one of my treasure hunts. The reed trim around the top edge is in excellent condition. The patina is gorgeous, and the piece is quite heavy. Perhaps it was made on a lathe? I wonder if you could tell me what kind of wood it is, where it might have come from, its age and value. Thank you, J.M.
LONGMONT Ope
Dear J.M.: Treasure-hunting can be a great deal of fun. Sometimes you find something beautiful, sometimes you find something you like but know little or nothing about it and sometimes you find something that is valuable. The question is: What category does this rather large wooden bowl fall into? Collectors refer to this type of piece as a “burl bowl.” Burl is wood that is characterized by interesting shapes and ring patterns. This kind of wood is used in making a variety of objects that range from furniture and sculpture to decorative objects such as this unusual bowl. Burl wood does not come from a specific tree. To name just a few, burls can be found associated with maple, ash, apple, plum, redwood, mahogany and oak to more exot-
ic woods such as amboyna. A burl is caused by fast growth that may be formed by things such as fungus or insect attack. A burl is an abnormality – a rounded, deformed lump on a tree. It is hard to determine from photographs exactly what wood a particular piece might have been made from, but after close examination, we feel this one might have been crafted from a maple burl. Artists love to work burls from exotic tree species because the result can be a spectacular display of “tortured” wood grain, “eyes,” beautiful colors and a variety of other anomalies. . Antique burl bowls of this size and larger can bring significant amounts of money at auction. One sold in 2004 at Garth’s Auction in Ohio for a staggering $56,000. This more modern example, however, should be valued, for insurance purposes, between $500 and $750.
