In decorating, black is one of the most feared colors in the spectrum. (SHNS/HGTV)

Classic black decor offers couple elegance Candice Olson HGTV

Black is both timeless and elegant. Everybody loves a little black dress or a sleek black sports car. But when it comes to decorating, black is one of the most feared colors in the spectrum. Many people think black will make a space too dark. But good designers know that, if used properly, black is a powerful tool. I demonstrated this during a recent design project for my clients, Joanne and John. They live in an elegant house that was lovingly renovated throughout time by her father. Sadly, he passed away before he got to work on his dream project: the dreary basement family room. I decided to pick up where he left off. The room was shabby, with wood-paneled walls, an outmoded fireplace and uncomfortable seating. However, the rest of the house had a lovely, traditional feeling with a neutral palette and a few black accents. I chose to bring this design scheme into the basement, but incorporated black to add muchneeded sophistication. There was some structural work to attend to first. A new ceiling was installed, the room was rewired and a mysterious door that didn’t open was replaced with a wall of windows. I then painted the wooden walls a tranquil cream

(after dealing with a lot of primer, that is), put up some 36-inch-high white wainscoting and put down a plank-style, brown cork floor. I now had a soft, neutral room, but with a neutral scheme, the eye wanders with no place to land. Black accents help focus the eye, but you have to use them wisely – by punctuating, not overpowering. The right amount of black will add excitement and enhance the other tones in a room. I created an L-shaped seating area along two adjoining walls, brought in two beige chenille-covered sofas and added black and black-accented pillows. These sofas share a charcoal ottoman, a round side table and an area rug with a black and neutral pattern that speaks to the new black-andgold floral drapes. Nestled in the corner of the two couches is a tiny nook that I turned into a showpiece. I backed it with grass cloth wallpaper and put in gorgeous, white cabinetry with tempered glass shelves. Along another wall, I created a fireside lounge. The room had an old stone fireplace that was a bit of an eyesore, so I built up the mantle, painted it white and refitted it with a gas insert. To one side, I put in two cool designer chairs that are called “smoke chairs’’ and added a huge wall mirror and a

black side table. No matter where you sit there is a good view of a new 54-inch television, which I put against the final wall. The television sits atop a long wooden console and is flanked by black-and-white framed photographs. When designing with black, lighting is especially important. So, in addition to recessed lights, I installed a crystal drop pendant outlined in black, two fireplace sconces, a bronze table lamp and a photographer’s tripod lamp. I also added some accessories: baskets, bowls, vases, artwork and framed photographs – including one of Joanne’s dad, the master renovator. One way to elevate good style to great style is to embrace a bit of drama. And that’s exactly what I did in Joanne and John’s space. By setting up a neutral canvas and then strategically adding dabs and dashes of black, I created a comfortable family room that has just the perfect stroke of sophistication. Dear Helaine and Joe: I acquired a Steiff animal a few years ago from a relative and wondered how much it might be worth. It is in fair condition and still has the yellow collar tag that reads “Zwergspitz.” It also has the Steiff button. Thank you. – S.D. Dear S.D.: It appears that this column is going to the dogs. Last week, we discussed Snoopy, and this week we offer an adorable Pomeranian plush toy. A Zwergspitz is more commonly called a Pomeranian, Pom or Pom-Pom. This dog breed is descended from the larger German spitz, and the Pomeranian name is derived from Pomerania, a region on the south shore of the Baltic Sea. The popularity of the Pomeranian can be traced to the British royal family. Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, owned two that were depicted in paintings by Thomas Gainsborough. At that time, the Pomeranian was a larger animal – Charlotte’s dogs

weighed between 30 and 50 pounds. Soon after, Britain’s Queen Victoria became the most important proponent of the Pomeranian breed; she bred them in such a way that their size was reduced to 12 pounds. We have covered the story of Margarete Steiff and her stuffed toys in the past, so we will only briefly touch on it here. Born Appolonia Margarete Steiff in Giengen, Germany, in 1847, she developed polio as a toddler, but survived and lived her life in a wheelchair. Margarete learned to operate a sewing machine and, along with her sister, Pauline, established a home-based enterprise making women’s clothing. By age 32, Margarete was making felt clothing and outerwear under her name. In 1889, she moved her operation to a toy factory. Margarete Steiff GmbH is still in business, but collectors prefer the items made before 1950. On Oct. 13, 2010, a Steiff dog exactly like this one sold for $395 at Christie’s in London. If S.D.’s dog is in a similar condition, it should have a value in the $500 to $600 range.

Colorado Garden and Home show provides ideas

Carol O’Meara

Colorado State University Extension

You wouldn’t expect a garden in Colorado to come with a Great White Shark, but at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, an ocean of beauty is waiting for you just inside the door. At the 52nd annual Colorado Garden and Home Show, now through Feb. 20, water is in celebration, as ponds, waterfalls and seas are recreated during a frosty time of year. Visitors to the region’s largest house and landscape show will be treated to lush gardens, do-it-yourself tips and expert companies ready to help you surf through home improvement projects. Garden after garden fill the 400,000-square foot hall, showing off the natural landscapes and urban getaways that are possible for your yard. Landscapes add to home investment, adding between 7 and 12 percent to the value of a home, according to a Michigan State University study. If you’re looking for other Continued on 5

Headlining the wish list in 2011 are tips for turning your backyard into a retreat, where relaxation and entertaining friends can be done in style. Environmentally savvy consumers are clamoring for sustainable products, so exhibitors are showcasing products made from recycled materials, renewable energy sources or energy conservation. Edible landscapes are hot, adding food and beauty to the yard. Check out the suburban agriculture garden, built by Europa Landscape and Agriburbia, which demonstrate how to incorporate food plants into an ornamental planting. Look for the Colorado State University Extension booth, where tips for making the most of your sun exposure are showcased. From broiling western spots to cool, shady northern yards, the Colorado Master Gardeners are ready to help you with information on plant selection, placement and irrigation. Leave time to browse the Plant Select portion of the CSU booth; the plants on display are proven best for Front Range gardens. Add romance to your home

Keep crawlspace free of condensation By Dwight Barnett

Scripps Howard News Service

Q: I have a crawlspace under my house. Last fall, I put insulation between the joists of one room to try to warm the floor somewhat. I put roll insulation between joists and nailed 4-by-81/2inch foam sheets with foil lining to the joists. I put plastic on the dirt. This spring, I went into the crawlspace and the foam sheets were wet with condensation. If I put a fan in the foundation for ventilation, will it cure the condensation? What do I need to do? A: The main problem with insulating between the floor joists is the high humidity normally associated with the crawlspace. Even when a heavy 6-mil-thick plastic vapor barrier covers the soils, the crawl area tends to have excessive moisture levels in the air. Humidity will travel

from warm to cold and from more to less. As the moisture from the warm room air travels to the cooler crawlspace, it has to pass through the insulation installed between the floor joists. The insulation is now a giant wick, cool on one side and warm on the other. Most of the floor insulation I have seen has been affected by the various moisture cycles that happen with the changing seasons and has fallen out of the floor-joist cavity because of the weight of the trapped water. By adding a foil-faced foam panel, you have increased the chances of trapping more moisture between the joists. The foil is a vapor barrier and will not allow for the passage of moisture from the room to the crawlspace air. If you have radiant heat in the home, a small electric fan can be installed in the floor to equalize the room air with the crawlspace air to condition the crawl area.

Scripps Howard News Service

Valentine’s Day is a lot of fun, but why reserve the romance for just one day of the year? It’s easy to make your daily life more romantic just by adding a few special touches to your decorating. Here are a few ideas to inspire you. Flowers aren’t just for Valentine’s Day. Treat yourself to a lovely bouquet of cash-and-carry flowers every time you’re at the grocery store, whether it’s a bundle of sweetheart roses or a mixed arrangement. One of my favorite ways to use these inexpensive grocery-store bouquets is to separate out the flowers, trim the stems of each short and place a few blooms apiece in several small vases. Tuck the little bouquets into unexpected places, like on a bookshelf display, on your kitchen windowsill or counter, next to your nightstand or on your dining table. Whether tonight’s fare is pot roast or meatloaf, daily dinners don’t have to be ho-hum. Make midweek dinner a delight by adding a few romantic touches to your table. If you’re in the mood to go big, surprise your family by pulling out the china, silver and crystal, or just add a lovely serving piece. Put your table water in a fine glass decanter with matching glass-

es, or pop the cork on a bottle of bubbly and serve it chilled in a silver ice bucket. Isn’t it wonderful to be at an upscale hotel or quaint bed-andbreakfast where they serve your morning coffee from a silver carafe? You can do the same thing at home. Instead of heading to the coffee pot and filling up that same old stained and chipped coffee mug you’ve used for years, make your morning caffeine ritual special. If you have hundreds of wonderful photos of loved ones stored on your camera’s memory card, in your computer or a disc, don’t let them go to waste. This week, re-

solve to print your favorites and display them in your home in frames. In addition, if you like to keep functional things like boxes of tissues out where they are in view, make them more attractive by finding a nice tissue-box cover. Instead of lining up unattractive bottles of cooking oil or vinegars, put them in a fun galvanized tin container or an English footbath so they look nicer. And take that pile of mail on your kitchen desk or table and stow it in a bowl. The column has been adapted from Mary Carol Garrity’s blog at www.nellhills.com. She can be reached at marycarol@nell hills.com.

Seed catalogs trumpet the promise of spring By Sean Conway

Tribune Media Services

There’s not much to get excited about in the garden this time of year. Most gardens, including mine, lie dormant. But one look at the counter space in my office would tell you there’s plenty of expectation about spring. The 2011 seed catalogs have been arriving in the mail and are spread out across my office. After gardening for many years, my backyard is overflowing with plants, and the last thing I should be thinking about is adding more. However, the excitement sparked by the beautiful photos and lavish descriptions of plants I’ve yet to grow never fail to get the best of me. Every year, I pour over the “new this year” sections first to check out the latest results from plant breeding programs across the country. Here are a few of the tantalizing offerings I’ve found so far: Burpee seed, the venerable seed company that’s been in business for generations, has two new sunflowers that look Real Estate Transactions are supplied by Prospects Unlimited Inc., 1151 Eagle Drive Ste. 467, Loveland, CO 80537.

remarkably different from the run-of-the-mill varieties often sold as cut flowers at roadside stands. The first is a hybrid called Coconut Ice. Rather than the typical orange-yellow petals seen on most sunflowers, this flower’s creamy white petals surround large black centers. The plant grows 4 to 5 feet tall and the blossoms would be perfect as cut flowers. The other unusual selection is another hybrid called Frilly. Growing 5-to-6 feet tall, this va-

riety features an abundance of narrow, yellow and wavy petals. Two other notable offerings from Burpee include a black petunia and a multi-branching white coneflower. Petunia ‘Black cat’ is touted as the world’s first black petunia, and if the photos do it justice, it’s sure to be a standout. There are few true black flowers, and I’m looking forward to seeing if this one makes the grade. If it does, the container possibilities will be amazing. The white echinacea, or coneflower ‘PowWow White,’ is a hybrid of the rugged plant once found growing in native prairies. PowWow White sports multiple white flowers on sturdy stems from a well-branched 20-to-24-inch plant. Coneflowers are tough and grow from Minnesota to Florida. While your garden is asleep, enjoy the down time with a few good seed catalogs (or websites) and start picking out those must-haves for your plot. Sean Conway’s book “Sean Conway’s Cultivating Life” (Artisan Books, 2009) describes 125 projects for backyard living. www.cultivatinglife .com.
