Loan modification can be troublesome

Tips for planting spring trees

Exotics Add intrigue to your home with unique plants

If you’re interested in planting either the Sensitive plant or Venus flytrap, make sure to consult a florist. Otherwise, keep some of these tips in mind when starting out your exotic planting adventure.

Venus flytrap

(Dionaea muscipula) • Make sure you don’t use fertilizer. These plants are use to nutrient-poor soil, so they do fine without it. • Do not overfeed the plant. Make sure you keep its diet to one small insect like a fly once every month. • Try to keep this plant in a humid environment. The less humid, the less likely your plant will thrive.

Sensitive plant

(Mimosa pudica) • To help the plants germinate at a quicker rate, nick a bit of the seed cover off until you see a white or greenish inside before planting. • Keep this plant in moderate to high humidity in a well-lit area. The ideal temperature range for these plants is 75 to 85 degrees. • Even though most will enjoy watching these plants’ movement, if you touch them too often they will eventually lose this ability.

Choosing exotic houseplants By Esteban L. Hernandez

Longmont Times-Call

Few can deny the aesthetic appeal of colorful flowers lining the outside of a home. Finding suitable plants for indoor is just as simple. But houseplants are usually less colorful and less interesting than those outside. Adding a dash of intrigue to any home can be achieved by growing exotic plants such as the carnivorous Venus flytrap, or the odd but appropriately named Sensitive plant. The Venus Flytrap Inside the humid walls of one of the greenhouses at the University of Colorado at Boulder, manager Thomas Lemieux overlooks the several hundred species housed inside. “I love plants. They don’t talk back,” he says laughing, standing next to a plant resembling a small tree. CU is home to four greenhouses, one for chemistry and three for the biology department. Lemieux is responsible for the three biology sheds. All together, the university houses some 1,000 species of plants, including the notorious Venus flytrap. Lemieux says the plant is readily available in most nurseries. “They make a decent houseplant, but more as a novelty because people often don’t know how to care for them in order to keep them going for a long period of time.”

These plants often do not thrive because of what Lemieux calls a lack of cold dormancy. “Generally people don’t put them through their dormancy so they may last a few years,” he says. However, with the right steps this plant can turn into a perfect, if not odd, annual centerpiece. Lemieux, who is not an expert in carnviours plants, explains that dormancy refers to the period these plants would normally go through in the wild during the winter months. It’s a type of plant hibernation, so to speak. Native to North and South Carolina, the plant does not grow during the winter months. To mimic their natural cycle, Lemieux had a relatively simple solution for those interested in growing the plant. He suggested placing the plants in a plastic bag then keeping them in a refrigerator for a few months out of the year. If the plant turns black and appears dead, you’re on the right track. “It’s actually better to do that,” he says. “Make sure they don’t get totally dry. You can keep them in a plastic bag and then bring them out after a few months and they’ll start to produce some new leaves.” Another issue Lemieux pointed out: many people who grow the plant tend to overlook the plant’s sensitive diet. “Kids often like to feed Venus flytrap little pieces of meat and stuff, they don’t realize that those kinds of plants don’t eat that much.

News and Press Releases

So they often get overfed. And then they die of obesity.” The Sensitive Plant At first glance, the Sensitive plant appears like a common fern, with skinny leaves extending from a single stem in an orderly fashion. But graze a single tiny leaf with a hand and before your eyes the leaves of this plant will begin to close in on themselves, as if attempting to flee from the finger that touches them. This bizarre behavior makes the Sensitive plant one of the few members of plant kingdom capable of such rapid movement. “Sensitive plant is kind of a weed in the tropics. Sometimes we have a little difficulty growing them, but they grow quite readily from seed,” Lemieux says. Like the Venus flytrap, acquiring the seeds for a Sensitive plant is not difficult. He said they are available locally and can grow quite well. Unlike the Venus flytrap however, the Sensitive plant can be fertilized with plant growth. “The Mimosa is not an insectivorous plant,” he says, referring to the Sensitive plant by it’s genus name after comparing to a Venus flytrap, “so you can fertilize that one normally.” While the appeal these plants bring to a home is an exotic one, Lemieux doesn’t necessarily recommend the growing of these plants to amateurs.

Experience planting a tree

Carol O’Meara

three-times as wide as the width of the root ball. Straight sides are a no-no, because they limit root expansion, so to get your tree off to a fast start try sloping the sides of the hole. Keep the soil you remove nearby to use in backfilling the planting hole once the tree is placed in it. Remove tree from its container, clip any girdling roots, score the root ball, then set it in place. The “knees of the root ball – the top edge of the soil where the first major root lies – must be about 2 inches above the planting hole. If your tree has a dogleg from grafting (a curve in the trunk just above the graft), turn the root ball so the inside curve faces north. This helps that sensitive spot avoid sunscald. Pack soil around the lower third of the root ball to help stabilize it, then backfill the rest of the hole with the soil you removed at digging. There’s no need for mixing the soil with amendments, which can change its texture and create a risk for the roots from girdling or water logging. When the hole is half-full of soil, water it to settle the soil around the root ball. Fill in the rest of the planting hole, water it again and then mulch the tree. Looking for recommendations on great trees? Join Louisville’s Horticulture and Forestry Advisory Board for an evening of tree recommendations by Jim Ord, from J. Frank Schmidt & Co., and Chris Lichty, Louisville City Forester, March 31, 6:30 p.m. at the Louisville Public Library, 951 Spruce St. They’ll discuss fruit trees and under- or over-utilized trees along the Front Range. Colorado State University Extension

It is my belief that the game of slug bug is far too easy. Many people play this game, where you punch someone on the arm or leg and yell “slug bug! every time you see a Volkswagen beetle. It’s popular with my family, since the fellows in my house love cars and I’m an easy mark to play with. You see, I’m terrible at it, because I rarely look at cars. I look at trees. And after spending time riding around getting pummeled (albeit gently) whenever the guys see a dome-shaped German car, I long for the day that we play this with trees, so I can scream “Austrian pine! or “Mugo! and indulge in a little payback. My family viewed this suggestion with disdain, because they’re slug bug purists and resist any attempt to change the game with new items to spot. But I think it’s a capital idea, one that can be easy to do by spotting over-planted ash or honeylocust, or difficult, by limiting the targets to rarities, like Bosnian pines. Gardeners should love this game and, with tree planting time upon us, you can help those of us playing this new game by popping in a unique tree to stump the players. If you’re planning to add a tree this spring, follow this step-by-step advice. If you’ve never planted a tree, keep in mind that they must be planted as correctly as possible. Planted too low or too high, and the tree suffers, unable to root out enough to support their 100-plus-year lifespan. Planting depth is crucial to the success of the tree; the goal is to have the trunk flare at the soil surface. Measure the height of the root ball to determine the depth for the planting hole, which should be 1 to 2-inches shorter than the root ball. Then find the topmost major root that branches from the trunk by gently brushing away soil from the top of the root ball. The depth of the hole should allow this root to sit 1 to 2 inches above the soil line. Dig a saucer-shaped planting hole, making sure it is

Splashes of blue add to winter decor

Head vases have dropped in value By Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson

These two Asian inspired head vases are charming, but their value has dropped. (SHNS/ Treasures In Your Attic)

Scripps Howard News Service

Dear Helaine and Joe: I have two head vases that are in perfect condition. The female is 8 inches tall and the male 7.5 inches. Printed on the bottom is “Art Studios of Madison, Wisconsin” around a “C” in a circle. I received these on my first wedding anniversary on Oct. 8, 1950. Can you please tell me their value? – S.M.T. Dear S.M.T.: No matter how much this pair of so-called “head vases” or “head planters” might be worth monetarily, their greatest value to S.M.T. will always be as her first-anniversary present from her husband. The name of the maker given in the letter is not exactly right. It should be the Ceramic Art Studio, which was founded in Madison, Wis., in 1941 by Lawrence Rabbit and Reuben Sand. They

reportedly manufactured china figures, “artware” and florist wares, such as these two head vases. The company used local clay in its products and made a wide variety of items, many of which were designed by Betty Harrington. In 1955, Reuben Sand retired and the company was relocated to Japan, where it continued to produce many of the wares formerly made in Madison. It should also be noted that “Manchu” and “Lotus” can be found as wall plaques, but these

are not as desirable to most collectors as the head vases. Valuing the “Manchu” and “Lotus” head vases presents something of a problem because prices for these sorts of items have apparently fallen in recent years. In 2009, it was widely reported that this pair should be valued in the $400 to $450 range, but as we check more current reports, we believe this amount is too high for the 2011 market. We feel that the value of this pair has dropped by one half or a bit more.

ify for a traditional loan refinance due to their participation in the government sponsored loan modification program. Recently released statistics indicated that only a small number of people who applied for loan modifications actually received a permanent loan modification. Those that did not receive a loan modification and were bounced from the trial loan modification received a rude awakening when their lenders told them that they would now have to cough up at once the money needed to bring their loans current, even though they paid the amounts they were told during the trial loan modification. Now those same borrowers that were attempting to keep their homes faced a higher chance of foreclosure than before their participation in the loan modification plan. You didn’t indicate why your loan modification didn’t work for you, and you need to decide for yourself whether you should or should not make any more payments to your lender. You might want to get a copy of your credit history from www.AnnualCreditReport.com and see how the loan modification has impacted your credit history. You can download a free copy from each of the three major credit reporting bureaus at this site. The site will also offer you a copy of your credit score for about $8. You might find this information helpful in seeing where you stand now, what impact a foreclosure will have on your future credit history and score, and what you will need to do the next several years to restore your credit history. Have fun with fabrics Fabrics can fulfill a fascination with textural elements more than any other interior decoration. Here are hints to help you choose the right ones for a specific look. Choosing your fabric first is probably the simplest way to begin a room’s design – you can always match a paint color to the pattern. But you may have a piece of artwork or furniture or an accessory that “speaks” to you, so don’t feel compelled to hold off if you haven’t found the perfect swatch. If you have decided on a particular style, research the look in magazines, books and online, tour show houses and browse furniture stores to get a feel for the textiles that best set the mood. Patterns – pick your favorite fabric and leap off from there. Take note of the background color, intensity of the hues and scale of the print. Then, select two or three fabrics in smaller patterns and possibly varying textures, all within the same color story. If you can’t find other fabrics that match your favorite or just don’t want more than one, bring the colors together through different materials, like leather, stained wood or metal. Select upholstery based on how the room is used. If kids and pets have the run of your place, look at sturdy woven materials like chenille and denim for informal rooms and damasks and tapestries for formal settings. Coordinate not only colors and patterns, but also sheens and textures. Use fabric in unexpected places. Line the back wall of a shelving unit, use it to decoupage furniture or hang a piece as art. Look outside of traditional fabric stores for your inspirational piece. Maybe you have a beautiful sweater that’s on its way to a thrift store because it’s too small – turn it into a fun pillow cover and dress it up with buttons or beads instead. – HGTV

Q: I was going into foreclosure, but the bank gave me a loan modification. I agreed to the modification at the beginning, but now I see it was a mistake. Now I feel that foreclosure would be better. What do I have to do, just stop paying? A: A quick answer to your question is yes. If you stop making your payments, the lender will certainly reinstitute the foreclosure proceedings to sell the home and satisfy all or part of the debt you owe the bank. The whole loan modification process has been a nightmare – not so much for the big box lenders but for troubled borrowers. The government held out the promise that loan modifications would help people save their homes. But it was far from the truth. At first, lenders were overwhelmed by the volume of applications. Lenders took forever to get through the files. In the course of the loan modifications, borrowers were given the initial impression that they would be considered for a loan modification if they met a certain minimum standard and were granted a trial loan modification. That trial loan modification was anything but a trial. Borrowers were told to follow the lenders’ instructions, pay a certain amount and wait for a response from the lender. However, what the borrowers got was months on hold waiting for lenders, lenders that reported those same borrowers – whom they claimed they wanted to help – to the credit reporting bureaus as either delinquent on their loans or as paying less than required on their loans. Those same borrowers looking for help were being hurt by the system that was supposed to be helping them. Borrowers that had stellar credit histories and credit scores soon found out that their trial loan modifications had hurt their credit scores so much that they would be unable to qual-

With so many gardens still buried under the snow and ice of this month’s blizzard – the frigid effects of which were felt as far south as Mexico – it might be hard for many to get in the mood to start the seeds for their spring gardens. But that time is upon us. For many novice gardeners, starting plants from seed is a bit of a mystery. For the last few decades, the trend has been for gardeners to buy plants from their local garden center or DIY store rather than starting their own from seed. But experienced gardeners know the advantages of buying seed: It saves you money, and it vastly expands the variety of options for your garden. DIY stores and mass retailers buy their plants from commercial growers, who usually only supply the basics. That typically means the standard fare in vegetables, such as a few types of lettuce, a few varieties of tomatoes, and one or two types of peppers. Seed catalogs, on the other hand, offer gardeners pages of different choices for each type of vegetable, often selling heirloom varieties as well as new hybrids. Starting seeds is easy – provided you meet the requirements for the plants you want to grow. The hardest part is selecting from the abundance of interesting options. Once you have selected your seeds, the next step is to figure out when to plant. First you’ll need to find out the last expected frost date for your area. Frost dates are averages, and are provided as a range of dates. The best way to find this information is to contact your local agricultural extension service. When you know your last expected

frost date, check the information provided on your seed package to find out how many weeks prior to the frost date you should plant that particular seed. Counting back from the last expected frost date will provide you with a planting schedule. Note that sowing schedules can vary widely depending on the type of seed involved. When growing from seed, planning ahead will help ensure success. Having all the necessary equipment such as soil, a watering can and a designated area for seed trays will make the process fun instead of a chore. Most seedlings have similar requirements: adequate light, proper temperature and proper moisture levels. Space tends to be the biggest problem for most seed growers. Fortunately, seedlings do well under fluorescent grow lights, so you won’t have to cram seed trays in every south-facing windowsill in the house. Once you enter into the world of seed starting and realize how easy it is, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start earlier. This time honored tradition can turn an ordinary garden into an extraordinary one.

Consider longer mortgage to combat money troubles By Allan Kunigis

bankrate.com

When money is scarce, borrowers may benefit from turning conventional wisdom on its head and opting for a mortgage refinance over the longest possible period. This can help lower monthly payments and free up hundreds of dollars each month for other obligations. “If you’re trying to stave off a short sale or foreclosure, extending your loan term will surely help make your mortgage payments affordable again,” says Ritu Agrawal, co-founder of The Money Ladder, a personal financial advisory firm in Minneapolis. Agrawal acknowledges some drawbacks to opting for a longer loan. “One is that you will pay more in interest over the life of the loan,” she says. “Also, if you were to sell your home after a few years, you would accumulate less equity than you would have under a 15-year or shorter-term mortgage.” But borrowers struggling to meet monthly financial obligations or facing foreclosure have far more pressing concerns than how much more they might pay or save over the life of the loan. “Our clients who have experienced an adverse event, such as a layoff, divorce or a major medical expense, often seek to reduce their mortgage payments while they try to get their finances back on track,” Agrawal says. “It’s much better to have a longer-term mortgage than to risk losing your home or damaging your credit by making late payments.” Jay Dacey, a mortgage planner in the Minneapolis area, also believes it can make sense to extend the mortgage term and reduce the monthly payment. “Let’s say life happens and you are stuck paying for a new furnace, car transmission or Junior’s tuition bill,” he says.

“Having a 30-year term instead of 15 years lowers your monthly hurdle. You can always pay extra (from month to month), but never less.” Although many people equate being debt-free with wealth or security, Dacey calls that concept outdated. “Just because your home is free and clear of mortgage debt doesn’t mean you are wealthy,” he says. “But having your assets compound and pay you dividends can build wealth.” While refinancing might be beneficial, not everyone will qualify. In the posthousing bubble period, credit is not always easy to obtain. A borrower’s credit score is important. “You are in the driver’s seat if you have a 740-plus score,” Dacey says. Borrowers in the 620 to 660 range will tend to pay 2 to 3 percent more in fees or a 0.5 percent higher rate. “Certain FHA lenders still fund refinances for borrowers with sub-600 credit scores, as long as the applicants meet other criteria,” Dacey says. Such criteria include having appropriate debt-to-income and loan-to-value ratios and adequate asset reserves, Dacey says. Some borrowers facing a mountain of financial difficulties may find it difficult to overcome the tendency toward inertia, says mortgage banker Jason Bonarrigo of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage in West Roxbury, Mass. “It’s human nature to want to bury your head in the sand,” he says. But he advises talking to your bank or to an attorney. “Consider a short sale, which is much better for your credit than a foreclosure is. Let’s agree that this isn’t going away, so go forward now to minimize the damage to your life so that you can turn it around faster.”

Save time and organize your photos Follow these 10 steps to capture and protect memories for generations to come. 1. The best camera is the one you have with you. 2. Invest in two smaller memory cards as opposed to one large one. 3. Delete as you go. 4. Move pictures from your photo card to your computer each day. 5. On your computer, sort photos in a folder structure that makes sense to you. 6. Consider using a photo-management

tool. 7. Utilize an online photo-sharing website. 8. Learn to recognize corrupt files. 9. Reformat your memory card. 10. Many photo applications and photo-sharing sites allow users to tag photos with keywords, so you can find photos easier in the future. Tag as often as time allows. – Courtesy Leslie Judson on hgtv.com
