Look for long-day varieties that form bulbs once we have 14 or more hours of sunlight As the plant prepares to bulb the neck will feel
a little soft and if your soil is hard from the summer sun, gently loosen it to let the plant expand. Keep weeds to a minimum, since they rapidly crowd out the less-vigorous onion. Careful, shallow hoeing around the plants is a must to avoid damaging the developing bulb, so if you’re a bit of a brute with the hoe, mulch is a good option for your onions. Thrips are common insects in our area, rasping off the surface of the onion leaf, leaving a tell-tale trail of silver. They hide out on weeds, so weed suppression is key to control. You can tell if your onion is mature by its floppy tops, which start laying over in midAugust. Hold off on watering at this point and when most of the tops have fallen, gently lift the onions from the ground. Let them rest on top of the ground for up to two days, trying to keep them oriented the same way they grew in the ground to prevent sunburn. After two or three days, take the onions into a warm, dry location to cure for several weeks until the necks are completely dry. Trim the tops, then store the bulbs in a mesh bag out of sunlight in a cool location. Indoor glamour comes to the great outdoors By Melissa Rayworth The Associated Press
Outdoor living has always been a priority in the sunniest parts of the country. Interior designers Brian Patrick Flynn and Mallory Mathison often focus on the exterior when working with homeowners in the South. But even in the North, outdoor dining and entertaining have become a priority, says designer Janine Carendi, who primarily works with clients in New York City. “Not only isn’t it the last thing people want to think about,” she says, “but in New York, where outdoor space is so rare, it’s often the first thing they start with.” Flynn says many homeowners have come to think of their outdoor space as an additional living room and dining room, decorating the space as though it’s inside. At large homes, outdoor space has become the focal point, much the way kitchens and baths have garnered extra attention in recent years. And at smaller homes, outdoor areas are a great tool for maximizing living space. Retailers have taken notice. The range of outdoor products – furniture, rugs, draperies – that look as though they belong indoors has increased considerably. “If you look hard enough and have the resources,” Mathison says, “you can find anything for outside that looks as good as for inside. It’s
a huge advance from five years ago, and even in the past two years.” Comfy Club Chairs, Low Slung Tables The shape and scale of outdoor furniture is changing, Mathison says. “You see people taking a cue from European lifestyle and doing al fresco dining, with dining tables that are a lower height, and chairs that are a lot more comfortable than standard dining chairs,” she says. “ It’s all about lingering and really enjoying being outside, having long conversations.” Flynn loves the latest offerings from Jason Champion Outdoor, which capture a lounge, relaxed feeling perfectly. Indoor Elements Brought Outside Mathison recently saw an antique armoire that had been outfitted to hold an outdoor barbecue grill. “At a show house recently, you see this armoire, and then they open it up, and it has a grill inside ... with all the utensils and equipment hanging inside,” she says. Televisions, too, have migrated outside: Flynn says moisture-resistant, flat-panel TVs are a popular outdoor accessory, though they are easy targets for theft. Indoor/outdoor fabrics and rugs are also being used to amplify the living-room feeling. They add indoor style to an outdoor space, Carendi says, but also stand up to the elements and are easily cleaned. Patterns have changed. Rather than relying on

Architectural Accents Old signage, reclaimed columns, old windows found at flea markets: Bits of commercial or retro architecture are becoming a popular way to put a unique stamp on outdoor spaces. These pieces are used on their own as decoration or to construct a pergola to cover and draw focus to the dining or lounging area.

awning stripes and other outdoorsy styles, these products are designed with an indoor look. Mathison likes outdoor rugs from Williams-Sonoma or Ballard Designs. For fabrics, Carendi and Flynn both like Trina Turk’s outdoor designs for Schumacher. Outdoor Kitchens The outdoor kitchen is here to stay, says Flynn, with a growing number of people going beyond an elaborate grill to create a full cooking and serving area. Outdoor refrigerators, outdoor ice makers and separate coolers for beer and wine are becoming more common, he says. Mathison agrees, adding, “You see outdoor cocktail stations ... and things like warming drawers and prep areas for grills.”

Defining an Open Space Gazebos, pergolas and other garden structures are a great way to define a space and make it feel like an indoor room that happens to be outdoors. Mathison loves the choices at Smith & Hawken, but says even Home Depot has attractive pergolas for a few hundred dollars. These structures limit sun exposure without blocking light entirely, and they’re great for hanging lights or potted plants. For patios that are simply a slab of concrete, Flynn suggests painting the concrete with bold color stripes or other designs. You’re essentially creating an outdoor rug out of paint. For roof gardens, his current favorite product is Newgrass. “No matter where you live, it instantly adds green space in a city, even for a tiny, 6-by-6 (foot) terrace,” he says. Unlike prickly fake turf, he says, this artificial grass looks lush and feels great to walk on.

Mixed metals in the bathroom The rule for bathroom decorating has always been to coordinate finishes. But sometimes breaking the rules creates something unique and more interesting. That’s certainly the case with bathroom fixture finishes. Today’s homeowner has an array of finishes to choose from when searching for faucets, cabinet hardware and towel bars. But can they be mixed effectively? With planning, mixing finishes is not only possible but great looking too. Coordinated Fixtures To make the finishes work together, it’s helpful to find coordinating elements that will play against them. For instance, in the bathroom pictured, the shiny porcelain bathtub, toilet and sink fixtures play against the matte finish tile and against the satin stainless tile inset into the shower and backsplash of the sink. The sparkle of the polished bath fixtures pops rather than blending in, which is what satin finish plumbing fixtures would have done. The bright chrome finish adds life to the room and makes a dynamic statement. Floor tiles with soft satin steel buttons at each corner
bring the backsplash and shower accent tiles together for a cohesive look that unifies the whole room. The contrast between the satin design elements (which also include the cabinet hardware and light fixture) and the polish of the bathroom plumbing fixtures gives the bathroom a certain balance that keeps it from feeling bland. Had the fixture finishes been satin, the bathroom would have missed some important design zip that gives this bathroom standout appeal. How to Mix Finishes Ordinarily, mixing finishes is difficult to do. But when a secondary element is added – in this case, the backsplash and tile inset – the look goes from good to incredible. And it’s this secondary element that unifies the two different finishes. If you want to mix finishes, look for a lighting fixture or other decorative element that has a mix of colors to help bring the look together. Another way to mix finishes successfully is to keep all the plumbing fixtures in the same finish, such as polished nickel, and then select lighting and cabinet hardware in a satin finish. When done right, mixing two distinct finishes looks up-

bowl sink. In this instance, both the sink and the faucet become much more noticeable than if the faucet matched the finish of the rest of the plumbing fixtures. The faucet would look especially good if it were a completely different color finish than the remaining plumbing fixtures. It’s not written in stone that metallic finishes must match – and sometimes it looks better when they don’t. So be daring and experiment.
scale and uniquely fresh. But don’t try to introduce more than two finishes, or the look will become distracting and disjointed. Different Colors Is it possible to mix different colored finishes such as bronze and nickel? It is if you have a third unifying element, such as tiles or wallpaper that reference both colors. Another way to carry this off is to create a visual focal point by selecting a unique finish for a standout fixture, such as a tall lavatory faucet for a vessel
When you’ve had enough of winter and crave spring color, why wait? Ready-grown potted tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and other spring bulbs are widely available during late winter and early spring at supermarkets, home centers and other retail outlets. Pick up a few, take them home, pop them out of their plastic pots and replant them along the walk, the front stoop, your deck or balcony or wherever you’d like an early dose of spring. For best results using potted bulbs outdoors, wait until local overnight freezes have passed. Choose young bulb plants with tight buds. Acclimate the potted plants to colder weather for a day or so, keeping them in a cold protected spot such as an unheated garage or porch. Then transplant them into a large decorative pot or even the garden if the soil is workable. Water the bulbs after planting. No other care is necessary. Hyacinths have a heady fragrance, making them perfect to place near walks and entryways. Colorful tulips and bright daffodils are perfect anywhere. Inheritance will remain separate from spouse
Ilyce Glink Tribune Media Services
Q: I’m married and recently received an inheritance, which I would like to use to buy some real estate as a sole and separate owner. How do I do this to avoid any spousal claims to rights, title and interest in the property? And how do I steer clear of any IRS infractions? I’m afraid that if I don’t somehow separate this purchase from our joint household business, I could create some spousal claim on the property and future IRS tax issues. A: Even if you’re married, the IRS recognizes the ability to keep an inheritance separate from marital assets. You are entitled to use funds that are outside the marital estate (like an inheritance) to buy property that you own on your own. You should start by finding a good estate attorney or real estate attorney who can help you figure out what you want to do and what will be the best vehicle for ownership of the property. You may want to purchase this property in a trust, which the estate attorney could draft
for you, and then the real estate attorney can help you close on the purchase. If you don’t know how to find a good attorney, contact your local bar association and ask for the chair of the estate and real estate committees. Those attorneys will be well connected locally and will be able to point you to attorneys who can help with your specific issues. You should also remember that once you have purchased this property and claim it to be separate from your household, you shouldn’t use any marital assets to pay for expenses relating to that property. Q: My ex-spouse and I live in the same town. He wants to leave his house (which I lived in with him when we were married) to me when he dies. He is thinking about using a quitclaim deed form. Is there a form he can complete before he dies, or is there another way that the transfer should occur? And do we have to go through a lawyer, or can he do it on his own? A: Your ex-spouse sounds like a
generous fellow. He should set up a revocable trust (you can pay for it if he can’t) so that the house automatically becomes yours upon his death. Assuming that Congress gets around to fixing the estate tax at some point in time and reinstates the stepped-up basis, you will be able to inherit the property at the then current market value upon his death. Right now, whether he gives you the property or you inherit it, you’ll get it at his cost basis. If he is going to die soon, then a quitclaim deed will work just fine. But the idea of using a quitclaim deed now – when he is still living – doesn’t make too much sense. A quitclaim deed is generally used to transfer the interest in property from one person to another at the present time. In some states, you can use a transfer-on-death document or deed that would transfer title of the home from your ex-husband to you upon his death. You could consider that option if it’s available to you in your state. Otherwise, transferring title of the home into a trust would be another solution for you.
If he were to use a trust, he would still own the property until his death, whereupon his trust document would instruct the trustee that you would become the owner of the property. He could change his mind in the future, but if he didn’t, you would avoid probate upon his death and become the owner of the property. You can buy trust forms online for your state. You may also be able to buy a transfer-on-death deed or quitclaim deed online. Be sure you follow all the directions about having signatures notarized and properly preparing the documents. If a document needs to be recorded, make sure you take all the steps necessary to record the document properly. While many people do this themselves, many don’t do it right, causing problems later on. You may want to engage an attorney or title company to help make sure you do it right. Ilyce R. Glink’s latest book is “Buy, Close, Move In!” If you have questions, you can call her radio show at 800-972-8255 any Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST. Dear Helaine and Joe: I’ve enclosed photos of an old ironstone ABC bowl. The mark on the bottom indicates that it was probably made in East Liverpool, Ohio. (I estimate 1850s to 1880s.) Can you tell me the maker, age, value, etc.? – J.E.

Dear J.E.: ABC (or alphabet) plates and mugs have been around for a long time. They were most popular between the 1820s and 1860s, but they actually originated in late-18thcentury England and continue to be made to this day. Our ancestors wanted everything a child encountered to be an educational experience, either religious or secular. ABC plates and mugs were designed not only to hold food but also to teach the little tykes their alphabet while they ate – and played with – their food. Many times, these ABC items also had moralistic sayings designed to deliver the double whammy of teaching reading skills and instilling values at the same time. Other ABC objects skipped the platitudes and offered entertaining images of games (baseball, cricket or marbles), animals (dogs, cats, donkeys, chicks, stags, lions or elephants), nursery rhymes, foreign scenes, flowers, Civil War images and pictures from books such as “Robinson Crusoe.”
Still another series had a large letter in the center of the plate such as a big “B” and the phrase “B is for ball” (and so forth). ABC pieces can be found made from pottery (creamware, pearlware and ironstone), glass and tin with the pottery items being the most desirable as a general rule. A large number of pottery makers located in Staffordshire, England, made these alphabet pieces, but late in the 19th century, American versions became available, as well. It is difficult to read the mark on the piece in today’s question, but after a few false starts, we determined that the D.E. McNicol Pottery Co. in East Liverpool, Ohio, and Clarksburg, W.Va., manufactured the piece. This would be a charming piece except that it is seriously damaged beyond all repair. Grease has seeped under the glaze over the years and caused an ugly brown discoloration; the transfer-printed decoration is so worn it cannot be clearly seen; and most seriously, the bowl itself has been cracked in numerous places (probably when it was placed directly on a stove to reheat the food). In this deplorable condition, this baby’s dish has only sentimental value; there is no monetary value whatsoever. Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson are the authors of “Price It Yourself” (HarperResource, $19.95). Contact them at Treasures in Your Attic, P.O. Box 27540, Knoxville, TN 37927. Twinny Peach snapdragon wins bedding award Special to the Times-Call
Who took the snap out of Snapdragon? Twinny Peach the AAS Winner, is a snapdragon without the snap. Why? Because it is a double or butterfly flower form that does not have the jaws or joints to snap. The double flower form is the origin for the name Twinny or twins. Another unique
quality is the blend of peach tone colors. The soft shades of peach, yellow and light orange are distinct, and no other snapdragon offers this range of colors. Match Twinny Peach with blue tones of Salvia farinacea or purple foliage plants and your garden will be a knockout.
In a full sun garden, Twinny Peach will produce abundant flower spikes, plenty to cut and place in vases for fresh indoor bouquets. Plants will continue to flower all season with little garden care. Like all snapdragons, Twinny Peach is easy to grow and it exhibited heat tolerance in the AAS Trials.
