As the mercury drops and days get shorter, you may be snuggling up to a wood-burning stove to keep your feet warm. With today’s economy, alternative heat sources may become more popular as penny-pinchers try to minimize gas and electric bills. While wood-burning and pellet stoves can be quaint and efficient, they can also be dangerous. To avoid injuries and damaged property, ask yourself these four questions, posed by QBE Regional Insurance Senior Vice President Charles Valinotti. He’s seen many dangerous stove set-ups and the devastation that can result. 1. Was it installed by a professional?
Installing a stove isn’t a do-it-yourself job. Work with a professional. If the stove was installed before you moved in, it’s worth having it inspected. One tip-off is if it has more than two connector pipes, it’s probably been tampered with, Valinotti warns. 2. What’s above, under and around your stove? Don’t find out after it’s too late, like one Oregon homeowner did. He woke in the night to put another log in his stove, but didn’t close the door all the way. As he snoozed on the couch, the kindling shifted and a log rolled out, igniting his carpet. While the man luckily escaped unharmed, his home was destroyed. Make sure your floor is covered with non-combustible material all
around your stove in case a log accidentally escapes. 3. When was your stove last cleaned and by whom? Your answer should be: It was cleaned within the last year by a professional. “We ask this question of our General Casualty and Unigard policyholders, and I can’t tell you how often they say it’s been ages since the last cleaning or, just as bad, that they clean it themselves,” Valinotti says. 4. How do you dispose of your ashes? An elderly woman in Washington recently swept ashes from her wood-burning stove into a plastic bucket and put it on her deck. Still smoldering, the ashes destroyed her home and belongings, totaling more than $400,000 in damage.

So you have a room that needs updating, but you don’t have a lot of time or money? These quick-fix ideas will spruce up a room in no time without emptying your wallet.
Bathroom If you like old fashioned tin ceilings, try ceiling tile paintable wallpaper. It’s textured wallpaper that looks like embossed white plaster, and you can paint it any color you want. Put it up under a chair rail to make a unique wainscoting in a weekend. Bedroom • A new duvet cover or com-
forter and matching shams will instantly change the look of your bedroom. Reversible covers give you even more design bang for your buck. • Paint an accent wall to bring a new color into the room. If your other walls are neutral, go with a bolder color on the accent wall. • Fabric remnants are an inexpensive and easy way to dress up your room. Recover pillows or add a colorful band to your drapes.
Living Room One of the easiest and cheapest ways to change up a room is to rearrange the furniture. Take
everything out and start over. • Don’t forget the floors. If you have wood floors, put the shine back into them with wood cleaner. If you have carpet, add a colorful area rug. • Go green with plants. Whether it’s a single palm leaf in a vase or a pretty silk tree, greenery adds a lot to a room.
Kitchen • Replace cabinet hardware with decorative pulls and handles. It’s an easy way to add personality to ordinary cabinetry. • Dress up your windows with a new valance. A fresh color will perk things up in no time.

you’re feeling adventurous, try sheet composting directly onto the garden ground, where dead, brown plants are layered along with fresh, green material and left to break down into a crumbly humus. Because this is a passive method – where the pile doesn’t get turned – choose only plant material that is disease free, as pests can survive the composting process.
To Sheet Compost Also known as lasagna composting, start by removing all weeds and plants from the area that will host the compost, then lay down corrugated cardboard or a few sheets of newspaper (black and white pages only). Add leaves, vines, grass clippings – any plant parts that aren’t woody – taking care to add both carbon (brown) and nitrogen (green) materials. Woody plants, sawdust, pine needles or wood chips take too long to decompose and should be put in a compost pile that can stand for a year or longer until those harder to decay materials break down. Wrap it Up Lift hoses, coil them and hang them in the shed for winter. Exposure to snow, plus freezing and thawing temperatures, can shorten your hose’s lifespan. Tuck them away where they stay out of the elements. Clean soil off of tools, sharpen cutting tools (or have them sharpened), and apply a light coating of tool oil to the metal to protect it from rust. Game On! Hockey family looks to entertain in style
Candice Olson HGTV
AFTER Ruhuni and Barry are the ultimate hockey parents. Sons Jacob and Noah are so heavily into the sport that their lives revolve around game schedules, ice times and practices. But when not at the rink, Ruhuni and Barry love hosting the team’s social events in their large home. They recently renovated their kitchen and had plans to continue into the adjoining dining room. But once the kitchen was completed, they ran out of steam, and the dining room morphed into a storage room for the boys. When they wanted to entertain in the room, Ruhuni and Barry would pull out a cafeteria-style table and a bunch of fold-up chairs. The couple were eager to reclaim the space and turn it into an inviting place for family and friends. So I gathered together my crew and got set to turn the space from a sports locker into an allstar room that would be casual enough to suit little hockey players, but elegant enough to host their parents, too. I wanted the tones of the kitchen to flow into the dining room, so I had to work with a neutral but sophisticated palette of beiges, browns and creams. I kicked off the redesign by wallpapering
three walls in the space in stunning espresso wallpaper that is made of textured grass cloth with a large damask pattern. On one side of the room, I put in a gorgeous wood side table, some beautiful artwork and a few stylish lamps. On the other side of the room, I got to work on the windows by installing dummy panels in creamy linen fabric with bands of chocolate brown in the same pattern as the wallpaper. I then set out to find the ideal diningroom table for the room. This table had to have a huge “wow factor” because it would anchor everything else in the room. I settled on a 7-foot-long (expandable to 10 feet) dark wood pedestal table. Keeping with the casual and elegant flavor of the room, I chose diningroom chairs with a neutral, durable fabric on the front and a beautiful textured pattern on the back. The real focal point of the room, though, is a new electric fireplace. I created a simple surround and mantle out of MDF (medium-density fiberboard) to give it presence and painted it all in a creamy color to offset the dark wallpaper. The visual warmth of the raised fire-
place can be enjoyed from each seat around the dining-room table. I also flanked the fireplace with mirrored panels that add depth and dimension and work to reflect light into the room. With all of the dark wallpaper and wood in the room, I wanted to add special lighting to keep things bright. So I hung a huge, antiqued bronze chandelier with six arms and traditional shades above the table. Lastly, I got to work on the details – an area rug, a few tables, artwork and candles – and the room was complete. By adding functional furnishings, elegant colors and casual touches, Ruhuni and Barry’s dining room came a long way from hockey gear and fold-up chairs. It is now comfortable enough to survive a lot of little hockey players, but stylish enough to host their parents – and the occasional dinner party or two. Now it’s game on – for everyone. How divine. Priceless Design Low-cost projects that make your home look like a million bucks If you have big design dreams but are working with a small budget, no fear – you don’t have to sacrifice style and professional-looking results. Try these budget-friendly decorating tips from designer and contractor Amy Matthews of the DIY Network’s “Sweat Equity” and “Bathroom Renovations” to help get you the priceless design you’ve always wanted without breaking the bank.
Shed a Little Light Give your kitchen an instant and inexpensive makeover by replacing outdated fixtures like faucets, lighting and hardware. You can also add a tile backsplash or under-cabinet lights to dress up your kitchen. Not only are these functional and design-oriented, they help deliver a big bang for your buck.
A Little Dab Will Do Before you commit to a paint color, buy samples and try them out on the wall. See how the color looks during the day, at night and under various types of lighting. Also, be sure to have painter’s tape on hand, such as ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape for Delicate Surfaces. Whether you’re painting one accent wall or tackling the whole house, masking trim, baseboards and other areas with painter’s tape lets you avoid a mess and achieve clean, sharp paint lines. Something Old, Something New Add one special piece in the living room that makes a great conversation starter. This could be a lighting fixture, a piece of furniture or a unique rug – something signature to your style. You
can find great pieces by shopping at designer sales and discount showrooms, or uncover treasures in your own house. Rummage through the attic or basement to rediscover pictures, vases or your grandmother’s antique chest. You’ll be surprised with what you may find.
Accent on Accessories Fancy towels aren’t just for your guests’ bathroom – treat yourself to new towels in the master bathroom and quickly transform it into an updated and inviting space. For your living spaces, changing couch covers seasonally will keep your decor fresh and make it look like you purchased new furniture. Try brown microfiber for fall, white linen for summer and sage green in the spring.

Affordable ways to liven up your home
Refresh YOUR NEST Family Features
As the saying goes, there’s no place like home. And these days people are looking for ways to make their home a more enjoyable living space. “Rather than flipping homes, like people did when the housing market was strong, we’re seeing more and more families embracing what they already have,” says Bob Maricich, president and CEO of World Market Center Las Vegas. “The idea of refreshing one’s environment, even in the smallest ways, can have
a restorative power and transform a house to a home.” Home furnishing experts say it’s important to recognize that it’s the littlest things that matter when you’re making enhancements to your home. Simple touches of a new sofa or end table, rug or even a decorative lamp shade will create a different look and feel to a room or space. This is a small lifestyle change, and not an unobtainable luxury. Nancy Robinson and Julie M. Smith, of Nine Muses Media, have put together some timeless trends that will help you visualize and explore the possibilities for updating your home.
Calm Yourself Living with a neutral interior palette is like being enveloped by a cloud. Get the look by blanketing rooms in the softest neutral shades: cream, mocha and, most especially (and perhaps surprisingly), gray. “A dash of a neutral metallic accent, such as silver, adds a welcome sparkle,” Robinson says.
Smaller desks pack big benefits, such as this Origins laptop desk by Aspenhome.
Distressed to Impress Modern Country is ageless and exudes a comforting charm that takes imperfection to new heights. Natural finishes, heavily distressed surfaces, reclaimed woods, rattan, wicker and other natural textures are livable finishes for busy families. And the look fits farmhouse
style or urban loft with equal ease.
Ethnic Inspiration Far-reaching global influences are no longer far flung. Ethnic-inspired fabrics are turning up all over in American homes. “The organic patterns, vibrant color palettes and handcrafted looks create an aura of sophisticated warmth,” Smith says. What to look for: motifs inspired by traditional African design; susani patterns from Central Asia; ikats and batiks from Indonesia; and handblocked woodprints from India. Power Play A smaller footprint, lighter weight and better performance are important purchase considerations when buying a new laptop. The same things matter when buying home office furniture. In fact, Robinson and Smith note that as laptops have become the most popular home computing choice among consumers, so, too, have writing tables and petite desks moved to the fore. Unlike their executive suite predecessors, these modestly scaled workstations don’t take up an entire room. Instead, they slip easily into most interiors, providing needed workspace without taking up too much space – or too much money. Seeing Black and White The go-to item in your closet may be the little black (or white,
Black and white never goes out of style, including this Côte de Rhône bedding ensemble by Amity Home. Top: Imperfections can be the perfect accent, with this trunk by Regina-Andrew Design.
depending on season) dress. In home furnishings, it’s the combination of the two that offers the most impact. It’s twice the look in one great product, and it never goes out of style. Smith and Robinson say to consider making a statement with a black and white combo in bedding ensembles, window treatments, wallpaper or upholstery fabric. Refreshing your nest doesn’t have to be out of reach. With a few simple changes it’s possible to fall in love with your home all over again. For more inspiration and tips, visit HomeYet.com.

There won’t be a better time to buy With more news articles appearing every day predicting and even declaring that the U.S. housing market is bottoming out, it’s becoming clear that the end is near — or already here. After two years of declines and uncertainty, it now seems to be only a matter of time before we begin to see signs of an upswing. What this means is that anyone who has been considering a new home purchase would be wise to act quickly. Waiting any longer could mean missing out on the best possible opportunities.
The right price Housing prices have been hovering at historic lows for an extended period of time. Throughout the com-
ing weeks and months, with no flashy new price cuts making headlines, potential home buyers might not feel any urgency to act quickly. However, just because a price hasn’t dropped recently doesn’t mean you aren’t getting the best deal possible. With a potential upswing on the horizon, buying now rather than later could translate into significant savings.
Premium incentives The same holds true for incentives. You may see tens of thousands of dollars worth of discounts, upgrades and other incentives available now, but many of them could be reduced or eliminated soon. For example, Kemmons Wilson Communities is currently offering $20,000 to $25,000 in incentives when purchasing an inventory home in one of their low-maintenance communities. Such generous incentives, though, are likely to be temporary.
The choice is yours Because more buyers will be reentering the market soon, one additional point to consider is selection.
With so many homes available right now, not only are you more likely to land a reasonable price and attractive incentives, but you are also more likely to find the right home for you. From existing homes to beautiful new low-maintenance homes, the choice is yours if you act now.
To schedule a discovery tour, or for more information on lowmaintenance homes from Kemmons Wilson Communities, visit www.kwcommunities.com or call Terry at 303-772-7600. You’ll also be entered to win an Orlando, Florida vacation just for touring.

Maintain your furnace this winter Follow these recommendations to keep your furnace heating system running properly. • Run the heating system at least once during the off-season. It isn’t good for the system to be out of operation for long periods of time. • Have a professional technician service your heating system before the start of the heating season each year. • Replace or clean the air filter monthly to maintain the maximum efficiency and air flow during the heating season. If you’re replacing it, make sure you use a new filter of the exact same size and type. You may need to change the filter more often if the heating system is in constant use or if you have pets with fur. – HGTV

Turn the tables on
Thanksgiving Dinner
By Mary Carol Garrity Scripps Howard News Service
Every year at Thanksgiving, Dan and I face a dilemma: How should we use our dining room table to best accommodate the friends and family who join us for this food fest? Should we attempt a traditional sit-down dinner, with everyone squeezed around our dining-room table? Or should we use the table as a buffet, letting guests scatter about the house, snatching a seat in any chair that does not hold a sleeping cat? Every year, our answer is different. So through the years, I’ve learned some tricks for making both presentations beautiful and special.
Dine In Thanksgiving dinner is a really big deal at our home, and we relish the chance to sit around the table with family and friends, laughing and telling stories long into the night. So when we can manage it, dining at the table together is always our first choice. If you’re expecting an intimate group, set a lavish table, one worthy of this grand holiday. Use your silver serving pieces, china and crystal. And take the time to add special touches, like names and menu cards. But if you’re entertaining a large group, you’ll need to plan the table efficiently so you can economize on space without compromising on style. One way Dan and I save coveted table space is to plate each guest’s meal in the kitchen, then use a butler’s cart to hold refills. I also keep individual place settings simple so they don’t gobble up much room. Pour your creative energy into creating a centerpiece that’s attractive yet streamlined. One Thanksgiving, I placed white pottery urns and cachepots down the table’s center, being sure to vary the heights to keep things interesting. Then I filled the containers with green and
white gourds and fall foliage.
Carry Out When the size of our party outstrips the space around our table, we switch to Plan B and create a sumptuous buffet on our dining-room table. Secretly, I love this option because buffets are easy to set up yet are every bit as beautiful as a wonderfully set table. Start with a dramatic centerpiece. Last year, I filled a huge cylinder vase with branches, then added in fall foliage dotted with berries and pods. The arrangement was light, loose and airy, yet incredibly powerful. Next, enlist your finest serving pieces, like silver chafing dishes and trays, crystal pitchers and compotes, and china vases and plates. For contrast, include rustic pieces like a wicker basket holding silverware bundles. One secret of an eye-catching
If you’re entertaining a crowd for Thanksgiving, use your dining room table to set up a dramatic buffet. (SHNS/Courtesy Bob Greenspan from “Nell Hill’s O Christmas Tree”)
buffet is to use a variety of heights in your food presentation. A sea of platters and plates set flat against the table can be monotonous. So generate visual energy by elevating some of your selections. Use a three-tiered server to hold cheeses. Stack one cake plate on top another to display fresh fruit. Fill a compote with rolls. When you arrange the serving dishes, make sure the order makes sense so guests can flow around the table without having to double back to get an out-ofplace item. Pewter platter valuable across the seas By Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson Scripps Howard News Service
By Rosemary Sadez Friedmann Scripps Howard News Service
It’s time to talk about a good night’s sleep. With all the stress we are subject to, a peaceful, relaxing sleep is health-restoring and rejuvenating. There are some innovative mattresses available to help achieve blissful sleep. Let’s explore. A company called Art Van (www.artvan.com) boasts a Sleep to Live diagnostic bed that includes an intuitive computer system. It uses data gathered from millions of body profiles to help the consumer determine the right sleeping surface for his or her body type. Yet another company called Park Place features an entire line of mattresses called Sleep Therapy. (Sleep Therapy is a registered trademark of Wickline Bedding, a West Coast bedding producer; www.wicklinebedding.com). One of the options is an aromatherapy mattress that features ticking that emits a lavender scent. The smell of lavender is said to be relaxing and, in turn, can help the body get into sleep mode. Upcoming models will offer vanilla and country-linen scents. The aromas are said to last three to five years. Park Place also produces a heat-therapy mattress. This mattress uses temperature-regulating technology called Outlast that balances the sleeper’s temperature continuously during the night. NASA actually uses this temperature-regulating technology for astronauts’ gloves. Outlast reduces overheating, perspiration and chills and also adapts to the body’s thermal needs. Oxygen Therapy is yet another mattress product designed for better sleep. It utilizes Holofiber, a material that has been proven to increase blood-oxygen levels in the body. This is good for those who go to bed aching from hard labor or extensive body workouts. The increased blood-oxygen levels in the body allow for faster recovery and ease of muscle use. The means by which Holofiber does its magic is through the ticking, which emits wavelengths that penetrate any fabric, such as sheets or pajamas, and stimulates blood cells to increase oxygenation. There’s more! The eco-therapy mattress is made with bamboo yarn and latex. Bamboo yarn is said to have natural antibacterial and moisture-managing properties. The ticking is soft as cashmere and silk, but durable like cotton. The bamboo yarn also acts as a deodorant, keeping the mattress fresh. Finally, there’s the Magnetic Therapy mattress, which embeds magnets in the ticking. Magnets are said to improve blood flow, cure a number of ailments such as joint pain and migraines, and, of course, provide healthful sleep. All of these mattresses retail at about $999 to $1,999 and sound blissfully relaxing.
Dear J.B.C.: This is certainly a lovely piece, but we would refer to it as being a fish platter rather than a tray. It was designed to hold a whole fish when it was being served as the fish course during an elaborate dinner party. Orivit is the name of a special kind of metal alloy that consists of approximately 89.5 percent pewter (tin), 7.9 percent antimony, 1.9 percent copper and 0.12 percent silver. The company Orivit-AG was founded in 1894 as Rheinische Broncegieserei fur Kleinplastiken by Wilhelm Ferdinand Hubert Schmitz in Koln-Ehrenfeld, Germany (most American would say Cologne, Germany).

Sweet mattress dreams
Dear Helaine and Joe: I have a pewter tray that is 26.5 inches long and 12 inches wide. The fish and seaweed are raised. It is marked “Orivit” along with what looks like a bird. There are other marks that are hard to read plus the number 2655. I have found some information on Orivit, but have been unable to find anything on this tray. Can you give me any information? Thank you, J.B.C., Colebrook, N.H.
In 1900, the firm name changed, but it was still Orivit-Ag. Orivit-AG was famous for its pieces in the Art Nouveau style. Unfortunately, the company went into a total financial meltdown in 1905 and was acquired by the famous WMF (Wurttembergische Metalwaren Fabrik). WMF continued to produce wares marked Orivit from 1905 to 1914. Orivit is famous for the metal mountings it made for art glass and pottery. Occasionally, pieces made by such companies as Loetz can be found with an Orivit signature on the metal areas. These metal-mounted glass pieces are among the most valuable items associated with Orivit, but its items with extravagant Art Nouveau designs are also in great demand – particularly in Europe. J.B.C.’s platter is style number 2655, and it is charming with the beautifully detailed fish. As for value, this piece is more valuable across the Atlantic, but the platter should have an insurance replacement value of between $500 and $700 or a bit less in this country.

What’s new about the first-time home buyer tax credit
Ilyce Glink Tribune Media Services
Since Senate negotiators announced they had reached an agreement on extending and slightly expanding the $8,000 first-time home buyer tax credit, my inbox has been filling up with questions about the credit and who will qualify for it. I’m also getting a lot of comments from people irritated that they purchased in the past year and would have qualified but now get nothing. This week, the Senate voted 98 to 0 to extend and expand the tax credit. Here’s a sample of the questions I’ve received. Q: Love your advice column. When is the compromise bill going up for vote? We could sure use the $6,500 credit. A: The vote happened this week. Senator Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) was able to attach his legislation as an amendment to S.1699, the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2009. Since the current $8,000 firsttime home buyer tax credit expires
on Nov. 30, 2009, real estate industry professionals felt it would be helpful to know the extension and expansion is in place before then. If people believe the tax credit is coming, but don’t know when, they might push back their closing, or decide not to bother shopping for a home at all. At least that’s what real estate agents think. The question for the real estate industry now is whether pushing the tax credit expiration date back to April 30, 2010 (if you have a completed contract you have to close by June 30, 2010) will give buyers the impetus they need to purchase a home sooner rather than later. Q: When my husband and I married in 2007, he owned a home in which I lived, but my name was never put on the deed. In July 2009, a mobile home was purchased and the title is in my name. Do I still qualify as a “first time homeowner?“ I have not owned a home in the

last three years. A: Do you own the land on which the mobile home sits? Is it permanently attached? Is it titled as real estate or a vehicle. The answer to your question depends on how you answer my questions. As far as buying a home because your home isn’t in your name, the answer is no. The IRS treats a husband and wife as one unit. The rule states that if either spouse owned a house in the last three years, both are disqualified from claiming the tax credit. But under the new proposed rules, if you lived in the home for at least five years, then you might qualify. Full rules for the current law are on my site or at the IRS.gov. If you decide to purchase another home after Dec. 1, 2009, then you might qualify for the trade-up $6,500 tax credit, provided you don’t earn more than $225,000 as a married couple (or up to $125,000 as an individual) and you lived in your previous home for five years.
Q: I closed earlier this year on my first home, but I didn’t get the full amount of the tax credit. It was only $6,300 because I earned more than the current $75,000 income limit. But now that the income limit is being raised to $125,000 for an individual, I’d qualify for the whole $8,000 tax credit. Can I reapply for the tax credit? A: Nope. The new rules only apply to purchases that close after Dec. 1, 2009. You have to think of this version of the $8,000 first-time home buyer tax credit and $6,500 trade-up buyer tax credit as entirely new tax credits that have nothing to do with whatever came before. Elements provides the best of both materials in an entirely new surface option.” Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, backsplashes, fireplace surrounds and commercial applications the countertops are monolithic in nature, homogenous in consistency and solid through and through. There are no
laminates to bubble and crack and no porosity to allow liquid penetration. As a result, the countertops never require sealing, are anti-bacterial and anti-fugal, have earned NSF 51 certification for food preparation, are low VOC emitting, and offer the highest heat resistance of any material on the market. Made in the United States, elements features a contemporary look that is silky smooth, timeless and clean, making it the countertop surface of choice for any design style be it traditional elegance or contemporary minimalist. Available in seven basic colors or in customized colors of your choice its versatility is its strongest attribute. More information on epoxy and quartz surfaces is available at leezadistribution.com.
