Icelandic poppy (Papaver nudicaule) is the dainty darling of the group, seducing gardeners with fragrant flowers that come and go quickly in spring. A tender perennial, it survives for two to three years in gardens, and because it thrives in areas with cooler summers, grows well at elevation. Spread seed early in spring and cover with a little soil. Chronically moist areas are fatal to Icelandic poppies; pick a spot that drains quickly, but close to walks or patios where you can enjoy their perfume. As much fun as these smaller poppies are, they can’t compare to the stunning effect of Oriental poppy (Papaver orientale) planted en masse. Root cuttings and plant divisions, generally planted in fall, can be successfully placed in the garden in spring. Oriental poppies come back each year in a dazzling display but leave a gaping hole in the garden in mid-simmer, when the foliage goes dormant. To cover this, gardeners plant the poppies to the back of the bed and let summer plants mask the gap. In fall, new leaves often sprout, and require winter mulch for protection. TV Dinners Add comfort with class to mealtimes in front of the tube By Kim Cook The Associated Press

No one’s on the fence when it comes to TV dining: You’re either an enthusiastic proponent, or horrified at the idea. Our family sits unapologetically in the former camp. We’ve tried using the excuse that both my husband and I work in media and we’re taking one for the team, but really we’re just avid TV viewers. Good food and good television simply go together. Far from being a replacement for a social meal, TV dining can be a great shared experience. And if you aren’t in the convivial spirit, a quiet meal can be savored solo in one’s comfiest chair, with digital entertainment at hand. Sheila Jeffrey, a landscape designer in Toronto, likes to whip up white pizza and salad, and pop in a Hitchcock classic. “I do, grudgingly, equate the practice with a less than desirable level of refinement,” she admits. “But truth be told ... I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve eaten at the table when I haven’t had guests!”

Philip Tracey of Framingham, Mass., a publicist for a national home decor retailer, says after a long day at work, he wants to catch up on the news and his favorite taped shows. “Eating my dinner in front of the TV is like killing two birds with one stone – it’s multitasking,” he says. He laughingly acknowledges calling the leather ottoman in his living room “my second dining room table.” And ottomans aren’t the only options for casual TV dining. Remember those divided food trays from summer camp? Designers are having some fun with the TV dining trend by reworking that tray. David Weeks has used a bright red melamine to reintroduce the actual dinner tray used by Sing Sing prisoners. And Brooklyn artist Lorena Barrezueta turns fine porcelain into the Munch Deluxe tray, part of her Gourmet Collection, in tomato or turquoise. The TV tray table of the 1960s (recently seen in an episode of Mad Men) has evolved into something a little sturdier, and

much more stylish. There are smart ebony or cherry-toned wood tables at most big box retailers, usually sold in sets of four with a stand. Simplytraytables.com has some interesting painted ones, including a set of woodland birds that give off a nice cottage-y vibe. For those who prefer a tray that can be carried from kitchen to TV room, there are several clever, colorful versions. Ashley Hatcher in Georgia has invented a tray with a non-slip silicone pad. She says the idea came from “a focus on function and entertaining.” West Elm offers a compact square wood tray that neatly holds a plate and glass, and would do double duty as a serving piece. Where do you put the tray? Casual dining calls for sturdy, easily cleaned surfaces. Large square coffee tables offer ample space for a group nosh. Modernists on a budget will love Innovation’s simple yet sophisticated Irock Tables in an array of vivid hues. This season, trunks have returned to the living room – another example of the trend toward multifunctional furniture. Store

cozy throws and extra floor pillows inside the large ones. Use smaller styles for seasonal accessories or board games, when space is at a premium. Most of the new trunks won’t remind you of your college dorm. Clad in luxurious leather and trimmed in polished metal, these are smart and sophisticated. Some decor-watchers see the waning of the storage cube ottoman, while others say its versatility makes it more popular than ever. There’s no doubt the ubiquitous cubes are practical additions to family rooms and smaller spaces. Several have a lid that inverts to a tray. West Elm has a well-priced trunk upholstered in rugged jute, in either cream, espresso or the newly hot Ikat print. There are handsome upholstered benches, like Pottery Barn’s with a kilim fabric, that do double duty as table and stool. And finally, consider a simple painted or stained wooden bench, which takes up a small footprint in a space-challenged room. It’s easy to relocate to a hallway or the foot of a bed when the mood strikes.

Add curb appeal with shutters

Article Resource Association

Even in the throes of winter, when most gardens are hibernating under a cold-weather blanket, it’s easy to bring the warm, vibrant feelings of spring into the home with colors, textures and patterns. From the saturated colors of fresh fruits and flowers to the neutral hues of pavers and fountains, the promise of new spring gardens can provide an endless source of decorating inspiration. In fact, styling a home is much like planting a garden: Begin with a base color, then add pops of lively hues to complement the space. Reminiscent of violets in the garden, try purple vases on the fireplace mantel. Finally, add accents such as a green rug, as if there were freshly cut blades of grass underfoot. The color experts at Sherwin-Williams have selected several botanical shades in the Refreshed palette of its Today’s Colors collection. These bright hues look especially fresh when paired with light, natural wood tones. “Our Refreshed palette is a playful exploration of a kaleidoscope of colors,” says Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. “It encourages the use of exuberant combinations like bright tangerine orange with sunny yellow – exactly what you would find in a springtime garden bouquet.” Using fabrics with botanical motifs is another way to reflect the cheery mood of spring renewal. Furniture upholstery, pillows and curtains can interweave organic elements into the home. Experimenting with muted, natural colors is another twist on garden-style decorating. For example, the Treasured palette from the Today’s Colors collection includes neutrals reminiscent of vintage, glazed pottery. Accent a room with an understated coral, yellow or green to give a home the feeling it has been well loved for generations. Relaxed neutrals are often at the center of nature’s palettes, according to Jordan. Mixing in weathered browns or desert tans can add comfort and provide a serene backdrop for favorite flea market finds or energized colors, she says.

“To really bring a room to life, bring things that are living and growing into it; whether it be a beautiful orchid plant, magnolia leaves or a giant bowl of Granny Smith apples,” says designer Larry Laslo, president of LL Designs. Wonder whether a splash of spicy tomato red can add character to a living room or if weathered-stone grays can refine the walls of a master suite? Test colors without ever picking up a paint brush. The new Upload Your Own Photo feature at sherwin-williams.com allows do-it-yourselfers to experiment with the paint retailer’s entire color spectrum, including interior and exterior facades. To breathe easy while painting indoors in the midst of winter, try a low-odor, low-VOC paint. The paint’s durability and ease of cleaning will keep a room looking as beautiful as the day it was painted. To view the complete Sherwin-Williams Today’s Colors collection, or to experiment with the new Upload Your Own photo feature on the Color Visualizer, visit sherwin-williams.com.

Easy ways to inspect household appliances Metro Services

One often overlooked aspect of cleaning is the inspection of household appliances. While it’s common to make sure air conditioning units are ready to go before summer, other household appliances often receive no such inspection. However, homeowners can easily examine common household appliances when doing their cleaning, ensuring everything is

running at optimal strength. • Dishwasher – Check for water leaks around the dishwasher. If leaks are apparent on the floor or under the sink, an air-gap might be needed. An air-gap keeps contaminated water from entering into the water supply. • Range – When cleaning the kitchen this spring, check the burners, broiler and oven to ensure all are operating at

maximum capacity. Gas ranges might require a professional inspection, so if any problems result from an informal inspection, consult a professional. • Refrigerator – Check to make sure a refrigerator and freezer are staying cool. Condensation could be indicative of a problem with the refrigerator or freezer, and be sure to check the condition of the refrigerator’s door gaskets.

Window shutters aren’t a necessary home element any longer, but they certainly can add decorative appeal to both the exterior and interior of a home. Today, shutters are largely a decorative accent. It is difficult to pinpoint when shutters were invented and first used. However, many historians surmise it took place in ancient Greece. It is believed these shutters were made from fixed marble louvers and provided light control, ventilation and protection from the tropical climate. Eventually builders discovered that wood was a more versatile shutter material, and moveable louvers were made that could vary the amount of light or air that entered a dwelling. Shutters have also had practical applications on this side of the Atlantic. Shutters can protect windows against winds and storms, which is why they are often found on homes in coastal towns. Decorative and operable shutters generally are sold in three styles: louvered, raised-panel and board and batten. Traditionally, raised-panel shutters were used on the first floor for privacy, and louvered shutters were used on higher levels to allow heat to escape the home. Homeowners looking to add something a little extra to their homes may want to consider shutters as a design element. While shutters used to be largely constructed from wood, now shutters are made from vinyl or composite materials for longer durability. Shutters are also at welcome on the interior of a home. They can replace other window treatments, such as curtains or blinds. They remain a perfect way to add architectural and historical detail to a home. Interior shutters are generally attached to a thin frame that rests on the inside of the window or the outside of the window casing. The shutters will swing open and shut, allowing light into a room or blocking light and other distractions from entering. They can be an ideal way to add privacy to a home in a decorative manner. – Metro Services

FLOORING 101 Selecting the right style for your home Article Resource Association

Your home’s flooring does more than provide you and your family with a comfortable surface. It’s an extension of your personal style and taste. It says something about you and your home to everyone who walks in the door. Selecting the right floor for your home isn’t easy. Chances are if you’ve visited your local flooring retailer, you’ve found yourself wandering through a sea of options, evaluating different materials, designs and overall durability and function. The question is: How do you choose when everything looks so good? You need to consider a few factors, including your style, budget, where the flooring will be installed, traffic flow and performance concerns. Cost is often a deciding factor. Set a price range and begin evaluating the features of

products in that bracket. If you’re not planning to install the floor yourself, don’t forget to factor in the installation costs, which are often in addition to the square-foot cost. Fashionable Features Appearance is the first factor to consider. The flooring you choose should blend with the style of your home, whether that style is contemporary, Victorian, eclectic or country. Also keep in mind the size of the room where you plan to install the flooring. Tiny tiles will be too busy in a large room, while large-scale products will overwhelm a smaller space. While many homeowners immediately gravitate to such attractive natural materials as slate, stone, bamboo and hardwood, don’t limit your options simply to those for mere aesthetics’ sake. Modern flooring technology such as resilient and laminate offers the best of both worlds – good looks, comfort, function and easy maintenance. “Today’s laminate and resilient flooring options offer many attractive features that rival, and even surpass, those of their natural counterparts,” says Gary Finseth, Tarkett Residential marketing director. “Not only do laminate and resilient flooring cost

Laminate flooring can give you the look of wood without the upkeep. (ARA)

Besides being far less expensive and offering great designs, resilient sheet flooring is warm and comfortable underfoot, is water- and moisture-resistant, and stands up to scratches, scuffs, stains and indentations. (ARA)

less than wood and ceramic tile, they come in a wide range of colors and patterns that authentically mimic traditional wood grains, natural stone, ceramic and even metallics. There’s something for every decor.”

looks. It also offers improved foam density for added performance and durability, as well as warmth, comfort and a quiet living space.

Chic Comfort Beyond aesthetics, contemporary flooring options also hold up to the demands of everyday living comfortably. Comfort of flooring refers to how it feels underfoot. It also includes its insulation properties and whether or not it carries sound. Other products, such as resilient and laminate flooring, have been engineered to provide the best of both worlds. FiberFloor resilient flooring from Tarkett, for example, features more than 200 distinctive colors and designs, including natural-looking wood grains, such as oak or exotic teak, rustic tiles and earthy stone

It’s a given that hardwood or tile floors look great in most spaces, but too often, these floors don’t hold up to the rigors of everyday traffic and living. Consider how the flooring you want to install will react to such factors as direct sunlight, water spills, furniture scrapes, tracked-in dirt and ongoing foot traffic and how they will hold up to cleaning, too.

Defined Durability

For those who seek a true visual match to real wood, consider installing laminate flooring. In addition to providing high style, this flooring reflects the look of real wood yet holds up to extensive wear and tear.

Two easy ways to winterize your house, according to ServiceMagic: Replace the filter in your furnace, because a clogged or dirty one causes the fan in the unit to run harder and longer, wasting energy. To prevent plumbing freezes, turn off the supply to your outdoor plumbing pipes and hire a professional to blow the excess water out of your underground sprinkler pipes to prevent a frozen pipe from bursting. If you travel or leave for an extended time, set the heat to at least 55 degrees. For more information, visit www.servicemagic .com – Al Heavens, The Philadelphia Inquirer

Everything you need to know about the homebuyer tax credit By Marcie Geffner bankrate.com

The basic rules of the federal homebuyer tax credit are not difficult to figure out. But the credit, which has been amended and extended, also contains more than a dozen little-known twists and traps that can affect whether a buyer will or won’t qualify for the full amount of up to $8,000 for first-time buyers or $6,500 for repeat homeowners. Here are some facts homebuyers should know about the rules that became effective Nov. 7, 2009. The amount of the credit technically isn’t $8,000 or $6,500, but rather 10 percent of the purchase price of the house up to those amounts for a buyer who hasn’t owned a home in the last three years or a homeowner who has occupied the same principal residence for five consecutive of the last eight years, respectively. For example, if the home cost $50,000, the maximum credit amount would be $5,000, not $8,000 or $6,500. Buyers can elect to claim the credit on their 2009 or 2010 tax return, whichever is more advantageous for them. Buyers who claim the credit on a 2009 return must file on paper forms, not electronically. Expect to wait 12 to 16 weeks for a refund from an amended 2009 tax return. The home may be a detached house, condominium, town house or co-op home or a mobile home, manufactured house or travel trailer that’s affixed to land owned or leased by the homeowner. A mobile home or travel trailer that’s on the road doesn’t qualify. If the home costs more than $800,000, the tax credit drops to zero. That means the credit cannot be taken if the home costs more than that amount. The home cannot have been bought from a close relative of the homebuyer such as a grandparent, parent, spouse, child or grandchild. The buyer can rent out a portion of the home and still claim the tax credit if the home is also the buyer’s principal residence. The income limits for the full tax credit have been increased to $125,000 for singles and $225,000 for married couples who file a joint tax return, effective Nov. 7, 2009. The higher income limits aren’t retroactive. “Income” in this context refers to the homebuyer’s modified adjusted gross income, or MAGI, as defined by the Internal Revenue Service. The MAGI might not be equal to the buyer’s salary reported on a W-2 tax form. Homebuyers whose income is up to $20,000 higher than those limits can

qualify for a partial tax credit. For example, a married couple that earned $235,000 could qualify for 50 percent of the $6,500 tax credit, or $3,250, because their income is at the midpoint between the full-credit limit of $225,000 and nocredit limit of $245,000, according to the IRS. A buyer who earns no taxable income or doesn’t owe any federal income tax can still qualify for the tax credit and can file a tax return just to claim it. The tax benefit is not a deduction, but rather a refundable credit. That means a homebuyer could receive a refund check from the federal government up to the full amount of the credit. An unmarried homebuyer or at least one spouse of a married couple must be at least 18 years old to qualify for the tax credit. Individuals who are claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return cannot qualify for the homebuyer tax credit. Nonresident aliens, as defined by the IRS, cannot claim the tax credit. Housing agencies in some 19 states offer qualified homebuyers short-term second mortgages that can be used to “monetize” the tax credit and apply the money to a down payment or closing costs. The National Council of State Housing Agencies, or NCSHA, in Washington, D.C., has compiled a state-by-state list of these programs. These loans may charge little or no interest and can be repaid with a tax credit refund, according to the NCSHA. Buyers who move out of the home within 36 months must repay the tax credit in full on that year’s federal income tax return. Certain U.S. military personnel, U.S. Foreign Service employees and federal employees in the intelligence community who move out of the home due to qualified official extended duty outside of the U.S. are exempt from this rule. Certain U.S. military personnel, U.S. Foreign Service employees and federal employees in the intelligence community get an extra year to buy a home. They must enter into a contract by April 30, 2011, and close by June 30, 2011, to qualify. Three Web sites that offer some useful information about the tax credit are the IRS Web site at IRS.gov, the National Association of Realtors Web site at Realtor.org and the National Association of Home Builders Web site at FederalHousingTaxCredit.com. Mortgage rates fell for the third consecutive week.

Literary books rarely valuable By Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson Scripps Howard News Service

Dear Helaine and Joe: I’ve enclosed a series of photographs of a book I found at Goodwill for $5. It is titled “The Fireside Encyclopedia of Poetry” and subtitled “Comprising the Best Poems of the Most Famous Writers, English and American.” Henry T. Coates compiled and edited the book, published by Porter & Coates in Philadelphia. The only date I can find is 1878 or 1879. Does it have any value? – M.L., Evansville, Ind. Dear M.L.: Old books are endlessly fascinating, but few have great monetary value. Current collectors tend to focus on first editions, books with their original dust jackets and books autographed by their authors. There are many types of books that are unlikely to be valuable, including schoolbooks and the most common

book on the planet – the Bible. Founded by Robert Porter and Charles Davis in 1848, the Davis & Porter Co. specialized in publishing trade and art books. Henry T. Coates (1843-1910) joined the firm in 1866, and it became Davis, Porter & Coates; in 1867, Davis left, and the firm was renamed Porter & Coates. When Robert Porter left in 1895, the publishing house became Henry T. Coates & Co. And when Coates retired in 1904, he sold the business to the John C. Winston Co. In any case, the book in today’s question appears to be the first edition, and it should have 1,002 pages – later editions (such as the 28th edition in 1888) have 1,016 pages. We feel it has an insurance-replacement value in the $35 to $50 range – not bad for a $5 purchase. Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson are the authors of "Price It Yourself" (HarperResource, $19.95). Contact them at Treasures in Your Attic, P.O. Box 27540, Knoxville, TN. 37927. E-mail them at treasures@knology.net.
