Winter Weather Carol O’Meara Colorado State University Extension
The recent lull in the weather has eager vegetable gardeners planning to start early this year, with soil preparation on their mind. Plans are in order to bring in manure, sheet compost or dig the ground until it yields to the desire to turn it into chocolate cake, instead of Colorado clay. But till too early and you could end up harming your garden instead of enhancing it. Despite the balmy conditions through the past few weeks, our soil needs this time to recharge moisture without having it turned up by tilling. Let the garden lie a little longer, and you’ll have an easier time of it when planting. Turning the ground now will expose the soil to drying winds and sunlight; any available moisture necessary for spring and early summer growth will be wicked away. Allow the soil to rest and build up the moisture charge until March or April. Supersize this by gathering up the snow from unsalted walks and drives during the next few snowstorms, and dump it on your garden – you’ll build soil moisture as well as strong muscles. Once March arrives, wait until the soil is somewhat dry before working it. Tilling soggy soil will cause cement-like clumps to form that are difficult to break up. If you feel the itch to get outside and putter about the yard, consider pruning trees and shrubs.
Get a head start on spring with proper soil preparation
Late winter, before bud-swell, is a perfect time to get out the loppers and shape your woody plants. Begin by checking the plant for any branches broken by storms, nipping them off with a clean cut. Next, look for branches that may be crossing each other, rubbing the bark off and leaving open wounds. Once you’ve pruned these off, you can indulge in a little shaping, should the plant need it. Training or shaping should be done with an eye for beauty and form, without haphazard shearing. Good pruning will take advantage of the plant’s natural shape and requires less work to maintain. Before you begin, look at a picture of the growth habit of the plant, and try to keep that form as you remove branches. Some shrubs are compact, needing little pruning; others splay out like fountains, growing with exuberance but no control. These can be brought into line with judicious snipping, but be careful not to overdo the pruning. Stand back and look at the plant before starting, labeling each branch to be removed with a colored string or twist tie. After each branch is removed, step back and look at the result before continuing with the pruning, to ensure that the form is being preserved. When pruning, remove up to but no more than

one-third of the plant. This applies to the plant as a whole or to individual branches if they are larger than 2 inches around. Large branches on trees should be removed over several seasons by cutting back portions of the branch instead of lopping them off in one fell swoop. Winter watering is one of the best ways to keep trees healthy throughout the year. Dry soil conditions kill off tender roots, which take up water and nutrients to support the tree. If, during summer, your trees have scorch, twig dieback or poor leaf size, chances are you need to give them a drink during winter. February is a notoriously dry month for us, so water once per month through March if we don’t get 1 inch of water from storms. Measure snowfall at your house with a ruler, then write each storm’s amount on your calendar and add it up every four weeks. If it’s less than 12 inches of snow, it’s time to water. Choose a warm day when no snow is on the ground and the soil isn’t frozen, then trickle the water slowly into the soil.

Below: Before, romance novelist, wife and mother, Teresa had an empty living/dining room in her large home that was a cold, blank slate that lacked passion and furniture. Right: After adding final romantic details, such as area rugs, vases, pictures and some books, the redesign was complete. (SHNS/ HGTV)
Novel ideas create a romantic makeover Teresa is a busy wife and mother, but at every available opportunity, she escapes into a fantasy world. You see, Teresa is a romance writer, and her active imagination is helping write her third book. But Teresa had a real-life problem. She lacked an inspiring place where she could compose her novels. She spent most of her free time writing in a local coffee shop, but she wanted a space at home where she could write and gather with fellow romance authors to work out ideas, celebrate victories and commiserate over rejection letters. She had an empty living/dining room in her large suburban home that suited the purpose perfectly, but the cold, blank slate of the room lacked passion – and furniture. So I decided to bring in my team and trans-
form the space into a sophisticated and romantic writing retreat for Teresa. The space had great bones – high ceilings, Palladian windows, crown moldings and hardCandice Olson wood floors – but HGTV lacked the “wow” factor. To help achieve this, I infused the room with a bit of color. I put up silvery floral-patterned wallpaper in most of the space, and then painted the rest in a serene shade of cream. Then, because the space was originally fashioned as two rooms and had columns

that separated the two areas, I decided to divide it into two functional spaces, a writer’s retreat and meeting area. In the writer’s retreat, I installed a new desk that blends function and fancy. The piece is a combination desk and bookcase done in a light cream with a beautiful darkwood work surface. I worked in a little seating area for Teresa and her friends, which includes an Lshaped sectional in subtle, silvery linen, and a gas fireplace surrounded with stone and a stunning mirror above. I hung soft and gauzy sheers with goldsatin trim that diffuse light softly through the large windows at the front of the room. In the meeting area, I put in a wooden table where the romance writers can gather (and maybe Teresa’s family for the occa-

After adding some final romantic details, area rugs, vases, pictures and books – the redesign was complete. This space was crying out for a happy ending. So I gave it a dreamy makeover full of traditional details, cool colors and feminine inspirations. Now it’s the perfect blend of fantasy and reality. Now that’s divine. Tulips
A Valentine’s Favorite
Netherlands Flower Bulb Co.
This Valentine’s Day, buy her flowers and she will probably be moved. How much better would it be if the flowers moved too? If you agree, then tulips are for you. While most cut flowers are the definition of static, just sitting there until it’s time to retire, cut tulips continue to shimmy and shake in the vase. That’s just one of the interesting tulip tips available at www.savedbythebud.com, a site designed to provide clueless guys with all they need to know concerning women and flowers. As to why cut tulips move in the vase: unlike other cut flowers, tulips keep growing taller after being cut, plus their phototropic qualities make them curve toward light, while gravity tugs at the large flowers. With all this going on, tulips seem to dance. Once arranged, they are likely to rearrange themselves. One must admire flowers with minds of their own. Girls apparently do, as cut tulips are edging up on roses as a Valentine’s favorite. This is good news for guys as February is when cut tulips are at peak availability and affordability. Below are Valentine’s flower tips for men of all ages from savedbythebud.com and the experts at the Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Center in Danby, Vt. The Basics • Be special, bring flowers. The act of bringing cut flowers makes a certain statement. There’s just something about them. If you know she’s the type to have a vase around, no problem. If not, be prepared to improvise. • Do not bring a vase. Why? Because bringing her a vase would imply that you didn’t think she’d have one. Even if she doesn’t have one, the fact that you thought she was the kind of girl who wouldn’t have a
vase might get you in trouble. Makes no sense? That’s why real men (and many others) need Savedbythe bud.com. Luckily a lot of things, from empty milk cartons to coffee cans, can serve as a vase in a pinch. Be creative. • An exception to the vase rule. You can bring a vase if it’s a neat vase, something you got especially to go with the flowers. Want to look really suave? Take your nifty vase to the florist and say, “fill ’er up.” Your friendly florist will be happy to oblige. Note: If you do this, you’d better really like this girl. Not only will this approach call for a significant cash outlay, it’s a particularly thoughtful gift. That’s right. A gift this thoughtful is sending a positive signal. Make sure you’re ready before you hit the transmit button. • Back away from the flowers. Let her fuss over the flowers. They’re hers now. You don’t need to be involved unless you see her visibly floundering. Open the wine. That’s a good guy thing to do. You can always show her savedbythebud.com. Girls can use it, too. The Mechanic’s Guide to Buying Tips • Buy at peak availability. When it comes to flowers, it makes sense to choose what’s in season, just as when buying fruits and vegetables. (No, not the ones in a can.) When you choose what’s at peak, you get the best quality, greatest range of types and colors, and best pricing, too. • What’s at peak when? For every thing there is a season. For Valentine’s Day, roses and tulips reign supreme. As a bonus: Every year, January through April is also the actual real season of peak abundance for cut tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. • Take a tip from Goldilocks. Look for flowers that are “just right,” not too green or too fully open. You want flowers that are not too immature to ever open, nor ones that are so far gone that the show’s nearly over. With tulips, choose flowers with buds that show some color (ie they’re a flower color, not totally green) and still have the tulip’s familiar classic egg shape. Once the Tulip Has Landed: Care at Home • A quick strategic cut. If she confesses flower ignorance, step in. Give the stem ends a fresh cut (cut off about one-half inch) to
basically ‘blow their valves’ so they can suck up water from the vase. Use a sharp knife and a cutting board. Scissors are OK if you don’t crush and mangle the stems as that messes up the water uptake. • Cool clear water. What most flowers need is a clean vase and plenty of cool clear water. Top off water as needed and replace it entirely with fresh water if it clouds up. Tulips are particularly heavy drinkers, check their water level daily. Most flowers like those little packets of florist flower food, but not tulips. No flower food is needed for tulips, they like their water straight. (By now, you’ve probably noticed that tulips are real party animals. They’re heavy drinkers but don’t eat, they droop and dance, they shimmy and shake. Party, hearty tulips!) • Keep cool. Most flowers, potted or cut, last longer when the blooms are placed away from direct sunlight, drafts and sources of heat such as lamps, stoves and really old TV sets.
One must admire flowers with minds of their own. Girls apparently do, as cut tulips are edging up on roses as a Valentine’s favorite. This is good news for guys as February is when cut tulips are at peak availability and affordability.

For me, there’s nothing as good as stepping into a steaming hot bath, slipping down until the water is up to my chin, to chase away the deep-down-in-your-bones chill of deep winter. Since my bathtub is where I go to relax and rejuvenate, I’ve made my bathroom into a personal oasis. Why don’t you do the same?
Step Two: Make Repairs If you’re like me, you pretend not to see all those repairs and improvements your bathroom so desperately needs. Now it’s time for us to face facts and get the job done. If your tub looks dingy, consider having it resurfaced. Does your shower need new grout? Do the light fixtures need to be upgraded? Is it time for a fresh coat of paint? Step Three: Freshen Your Linens There’s nothing like wrapping yourself in a soft, fluffy towel after a good soak in the tub. If your towels are past their prime, donate them to an animal shelter, hit the white sales and restock your linen closet. Shower curtains are the focal point in many bathrooms, so be sure yours is a

Step One: Clean Up Most of us have a graveyard of toiletries in our vanity. Remember those cosmetics that just weren’t the right color, that hair product that didn’t deliver on its promises and those scented lotions that have turned sour? Get a trash bag and excavate your vanity, tossing anything you’ll never use and everything that’s past its prime.

show-stealer. Step Four: Design the Space Decorate your bathroom as beautifully as you would any other room in the house. If space allows, use regular furniture, not the kind specifically made for bathrooms. Fill the room with great accessories, and be sure to fill your wall space with wonderful artwork, especially if your bathroom is so small that you don’t have room for furnishings or accents. Create a tableau in a bookcase out of your favorite things, like a small clock, bud vase and a miniature painting propped in an easel. Dear D.M.: Books on flora and fauna were popular during the 18th and early 19th centuries. A number of naturalists, primarily in Europe but also in the United States, published tomes on exotic (and domestic) birds, animals and flowers. Illustrations from these books are now widely collected, although purists prefer to have the entire volume intact or a complete set of volumes that originally contained these prints. It is important to remember that while some of these prints did not make it into books, most of the illustrations from this time period were once contained in a publication of some sort. As a general rule, in order for a single image to exist, it had to be removed from a book – a desecration to many people. There were actually two English flora-and-fauna illustrators named Nodder who made engravings such as those in today’s question: Frederick P. Nodder and his son, Richard. Frederick Nodder flourished from about 1770 to 1800. He is perhaps best known for his illustrations in “The Naturalist’s Miscellany,” a compilation of
birds, mammals, crustaceans, reptiles, insects and fish from around the world but with a focus on species from the South Seas. The Nodders teamed with George Shaw (1751-1813), the zoologist of the British Museum and a fellow of the Royal Society, to produce “The Naturalist’s Miscellany,” which was later assembled into a 24-volume set after being serialized between 1790 and 1813. Shaw provided the text and the scholarship for this work, while Nodder and his son contributed the superbly hand-colored copperplate etchings. “The Naturalist’s Miscellany” was initially published in octavo size, approximately 6-by-9.5 inches, and these dimensions worry us in light of D.M.’s report that his or her examples are a mere 4by-6 inches. We hope this is only a measurement of the image area because if this is the size of the entire etching, it cannot be from the first editions, which will diminish their monetary value. If the more typical examples belonging to D.M. are from the first edition and in good condition, the insurancereplacement value ranges from $150 to $250 for each. Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson are the authors of “Price It Yourself” (HarperResource, $19.95). Contact them at Treasures in Your Attic, P.O. Box 27540, Knoxville, TN 37927. Q: My husband and I have decided to stay in our present home after considering a move. We’re doing this under the condition that we remodel our master bathroom. Because of the savings of staying where we are, my husband said I could go “crazy” and pick out any fixtures I want for the remodel job. I already have my toilet and tub picked out, but I need help thinking outside the box for my bathroom sinks. Can you suggest some exotic or nonstandard materials available for bathroom sinks that I can choose from? – Judy A: I can tell that even though your husband said you can go “crazy” picking out the new bathroom fixtures, you’re being very cautious in making your decisions so that you’ll end up with your dream bathroom. Here are my three choices for nonstandard materials for a bathroom sink that you may want to consider. • Glass – Yes, high-density glass sinks are in great demand for many high-end bathrooms. Glass lavatories are translucent in appearance and feature handcrafted quality, making them surprisingly stronger than expected. • Marble – For a natural look, it’s tough to beat a stone sink. Marble sinks are cut and polished from actual marble slabs, and their look and feel are the real deal. As far as styling, the stone designs are usually best suited for vessel-type sinks that sit above the counter, which allows viewing of both sides of the sink. • Stainless steel – Yes, good old stainless steel, which is usually found in kitchens, is also available for the bathroom. Styles include self-rimming top mounts, under-mounts and even vessel-type sinks. – Ed Del Grande, HGTVPro.com
One of the great joys of gardening is sharing plants with friends. And many plants can be reproduced without the long process of cross pollination and seed production, simply by taking a part of the existing plant and tending it until new roots or shoots form. Quite a few plants have the ability to grow new roots from pieces of stems that have been separated from the parent. These are reSean Conway ferred to as stem Cultivating Life cuttings. Another form of propagation, which is frequently used in the nursery industry but seldom practiced by home gardeners, is to take root cuttings. The plant’s roots are cut into small pieces and placed in sealed plastic bags containing either sand or perlite. New shoots will sprout from the pieces of root within weeks to months. A third method of propagation is called division. In this case, the plant is reproduced by separating a single clump, much like separating Siamese twins. The best way for novice gardeners to try their hand at propagation is to do stem cuttings. Many types of garden plants can be propagated this way, but I recommend practicing on houseplants as a great way to learn the technique. Start by filling a small pot with sterile, porous medium such as perlite or sand. Choose a plant such as a begonia that has soft, succulent stems, and use a

sharp instrument such as an X-Acto knife to cut a 1- to 2-inch piece of stem just below a leaf. Next, dip the cut end of the stem into a rooting powder. Rooting powder contains root-stimulating hormones and can be purchased online or at your local garden center. Using a pencil, make a small hole into the moist sand or perlite, and place the cutting into it. Repeat the process, and then gently water the medium again to firm it up around the cutting, removing excess air pockets around the stems in the process. Next, place a plastic bag over the pot
to create a humid environment for the cuttings. This will mitigate moisture loss and encourage roots to form. Place the cuttings in bright light but out of direct sun. Remove the bag for about a half hour each day, and keep the medium moist. Roots should begin forming within a week to 10 days. Gently lift the cuttings with a fork to inspect for roots. Once they form, move the newly rooted plants into pots of their own with soil. Sean Conway’s television series, “Cultivating Life,” airs Saturdays at 12:30 p.m. ET on WGN America. A new green, powerful laundry method Maybe lugging huge jugs of laundry detergent is part of your fitness regime, building up your biceps hauling around those bulky bottles. But if you’d rather travel light, check out new Method Laundry Detergent. A 20-ounce bottle of the ultra-concentrated detergent, which is 95 percent plant-based, can do 50 loads. Pump just four to six squirts from the bottle and the laundry gets clean. An extra squirt or two does the trick on a tough stain, too. People always say that good things come in small packages, and in this case, they’re right. Producing Method Laundry’s compact recyclable bottle requires less plastic, and that means less energy, as well. Method Laundry Detergent comes in three varieties – Free + Clear, Peony Blossom and Fresh Air – and in 20-ounce and 10-ounce sizes, priced at $15 and $8. They’re just hitting the shelves in some areas at Whole Foods, Lowe’s and other grocery and drug stores and will be available at Target by mid-February. Bankruptcy requires wait before refinancing

Casement windows help aging people Metro Services
Q: My daughter and her ex-husband bought a house in 2000 with a variable loan. They were planning to refinance to a conventional loan, but never did. They ended up filing for bankruptcy and were paying off what they owed on the house. They were divorced two years ago and she got the house. Her payments increased approximately $250 per month Ilyce Glink when the loan adjusted. Tribune Media Services The bankruptcy was paid off and satisfied in October 2009. Can she now get her house refinanced with a conventional loan, and how should she go about it? A: Conventional lenders today require borrowers who have had a bankruptcy to wait two to five years after the date the bankruptcy is discharged before being able to qualify for a loan. Since the housing and credit crisis, lenders have significantly tightened their credit standards. Your daughter will need credit of at least 580 to 620 just to qualify for an FHA loan. And, she will need “seasoning,” which is a nice way of saying she needs at least two to five years to allow her credit history and score to recover. She should speak with a lender to get an idea of what she needs to do in order to get her finances into shape. But she should be prepared to continue to pay on this loan for some time to come. Here’s another thought: With interest rates as low as they are today, your daughter should look at her loan documents and understand how her monthly payment is computed. If her loan payments initially were set too low to pay off the amount that was actually owed on the loan, the amount she now sees may actually reflect what it takes to pay a mortgage – even at these low interest rates – on her house. The interest rate on her loan may have come way down, but she needs to pay for real estate taxes, insurance and the principal and interest payments on her loan may now be reflected in her new payment. It’s possible that no new loan will give your daughter a lower interest payment. If her loan recently adjusted and she didn’t obtain a loan that was targeted to people with bad credit, she should benefit from the current drop in short term interest rates. When your daughter looks over her loan documents, she might want to have a conversation with a good and reputable mortgage lender to determine how her interest rate is set, how her monthly payment is computed and what her real estate taxes and insurance payments are on a monthly basis. Once she understands that information, she will be in a better position to determine what to do going forward.

Let’s face it. As the body gets older, it can’t easily perform the same day-to-day tasks that it could when it was younger. That includes opening, closing and caring for windows in the home. “When you’re in your 30s or 40s, opening a Double Hung window requires no special thought,” says Christopher Burk, product manager with Simonton Windows. “However, as you get older, your back and hands may feel the strain more of operating these ‘lift-style’ windows. By the time you’re in your 50s, it makes sense to think about installing easy-to-operate windows in the home, such as Casement windows that require no lifting action.” Casement windows, which operate on a crankout system with a side-hinged sash that opens outward for ventilation (up to a full 90 degrees with most windows), can be used in all areas of the home. Casement windows are especially appealing when combined into large bay or bow window configurations because they allow a maximum amount of light and airflow into the home. For those senior homeowners looking for a smaller crank-out window style option, Simonton offers both Awning and Hopper windows. With Awning windows, the sash is hinged on top and the window cranks out and upward. A pull-out Hopper window is easy to operate and the sash is hinged on the bottom of the window. A special panel insert, made to resemble acrylic block, is also available as a privacy feature on a Hopper window. Finally, Burk recommends Slider windows.
Two-Lite Slider windows are easy for older people to operate without straining back or arm muscles. (George Remington/Metro Services)
“Slider windows glide effortlessly from side to side, so there’s no strain on arms or back muscles to operate them,” Burk says. “The Slider windows provide great views with either 2- or 3-lite configurations and allow for maximum ventilation in the home.”
AARP Recommendations According to a checklist of home safety aspects available from the AARP, ease of operation is tops on their list for window considerations for seniors. Another item to consider is the availability of sturdy, easy to operate locks to secure windows in the home. “While locking systems are important, we’re also seeing an increasing number of homeowners ordering windows featuring impact-resistant glass to enhance security in the home,” says
Christopher Burk, product manager with Simonton Windows. Another consideration of window selection for seniors should be long-term maintenance and care. Burk stresses that vinyl-framed windows require only minimal cleaning. “With vinyl window frames you never need to worry about upkeep such as the scraping and repainting required with wood frames,” Burk says.
