If you’ve picked Valentine’s as the moment to get engaged, cupid rules your heart. How the question is popped differs from couple to couple but once that all-important question is answered, if you’re a savvy bride, your next thought is “I gotta get a florist!” Flowers and weddings have intertwined for eons, with bouquets getting their start during times when villages and towns were perfumed by open sewage and livestock leavings. “It didn’t smell good, so people carried around nosegays (little flower bunches) or pinned them to their lapels,” says Ashley Giles, stationary department manager for Sturtz and Copeland in Boulder. “When the smell got bad enough they’d turn their head and sniff the flowers.” These floral air fresheners morphed into the bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres weddings have today, although Carol O’Meara modern brides Colorado State needn’t worry about University Extension a crowd of unwashed guests. If you’re planning your big day, make flower shopping easy with these tips. • Plan ahead, booking six months in advance, if possible. “We’re available to do spur of the moment – we’ve had people come in and say ‘I need a bridal bouquet right away’ – but four weeks or longer is better,” says Brad Golter, owner of Longmont Florist and Floral Association of the Rockies board member. This gives the florist time to find perfect flowers, and if the bride’s nervous, “she can come in and see them before they’re put together to make sure the colors are right.” • Be ready to answer a few questions so the design can be customized around you. “I’ll ask the bride for adjectives to describe her wedding, one of which must be about style,” says Kristina Sutcliffe, owner of European Flower Shop in Boulder. “I want to see the silhouette of her gown, how tall she is. What I do for a 6-foot tall bride is different than for someone 5-feet-2.” The time you spend talking with the florist is crucial. “Flowers are what bind everything together. They’re art, they make the moment intimate,” Sutcliffe says. “Be sure the florist you pick gets you, and listens well.” • Don’t be coy about discussing your budget. “We can work with any budget, as long as we know what it is,” says Jerrica Park, co-owner of Boulder Blooms. Florists can offer suggestions on touches that make your day breathtaking without breaking the bank.
(Courtesy Alison Stoven O’Connor)
“The little elements, especially at the ceremony, make a difference,” says Park, pointing to 3-foot tall glass vases filled with water. Within them, spirals of silver wire lifted orchids up like bubbles. “At an upcoming wedding, these canisters will line the aisle, then we’ll move them to the reception to use them there, to double their use.” • Bring pictures of flowers or arrangements you like, but if you need a starting point, ask to see their photo books. “Tropicals are hot right now, but no matter what, conservative romance is still the most popular,” says Sarah Cioni, owner of the Painted Primrose in Boulder. “Roses, calla lilies – people love them along with the limey green of Israeli ruskus leaves.” • Make yours a green wedding with customized, plantable seed paper invitations. “They’re a romantic tie-in with flowers and earth friendly,” says Don Martin, president of Bloomin’, a Boulder-based card company specializing in wildflower-seeded stationary. “The whole idea of giving guests flowers, something they can plant that will come back year after year ... it’s symbolic of how special that event is.” Plantable paper or not, order your invitations early, Giles says. “Flowers are easier on the timeline; printing takes time. Order your stationary eight months out, if possible.” Sturtz and Copeland provides brides with a stationary timeline on their Web site, sturtzandcopeland.com/stationery.php. Then relax. As long as you’ve gathered people and plants together, your wedding will be perfect. Turquoise Tops Charts Pantone experts pick a soothing green-blue as color of the year By Paige McGlothlin McClatchy Newspapers
’Tis the year to dream about escaping that daily grind and trading it in for a tropical adventure. The counselors of color at Pantone, who consult with those in the home, fashion, beauty and advertising industries, have announced their “color of the year.” In 2010, Americans are all about “155519 turquoise.” This particular shade of turquoise leans just a bit more toward green than blue. It’s a soothing, spa-like tone. We spoke with Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, about the process of choosing the color of the year. “The color of the year is chosen thoughtfully, with the mood of the country in mind and what people are looking for ... world events and the arts are pulse points for those involved in the color industries,” she says. Fashion designers, she said, are asked about their color choices for the season as well. They recommend pairing turquoise with neutrals, navy for a classic look, or with a tomato puree tone, corals or pinks for an animated combination. In Pantone’s ongoing color-word association studies, consumers are asked questions such as “How does turquoise make you feel?” Invariably,

Dear Helaine and Joe: The attached pictures show a pair of antique vases that my mother obtained in the late 1930s or early 1940s. There are no markings, and the bottoms of the vases are milky white. Could you tell me about them? – B.W., Randolph, Mass. Dear B.W.: We want so desperately for things to be signed by the manufacturer, but when it comes to glass, this is seldom the case – which may be a good thing. Signed pieces of glass are often the products of companies with artistic aspirations, and most of these signatures can be easily faked. In the case of the vases in today’s question, these unsigned items are generally called “Bristol glass.” Now this can be confusing because there are two types of Bristol glass – one variety can be rather pricey, while the other category is not (as a general rule). Some history: Bristol, located on the Severn Estuary in southwest England, is about 105 miles west of London. Granted a royal charter in 1155, it gained county status in 1373. Bristol became a glassmaking center as early as the 17th century, and became renowned for quality glassware, especially its transparent blue and transparent green varieties. This type of Bristol glass – which was never made in the town of Bristol, England – is generally from the mid- to late-Victorian period, and we believe this pair is probably circa 1885. Such vases are not uncommon, and the insurance-replacement value for this pair of “Bristol glass” vases is $150 to $175 if they are more than 9 inches tall; smaller sizes are less valuable. Q: I have a poor credit history but a great rental history. Tell me, how can I take advantage of the $8,000 tax credit for Ilyce Glink & Sam Tamkin first-time Tribune Media Services home buyers? A: The $8,000 first-time homebuyer tax credit is a program intended to provide a little extra financial assistance to help those people who otherwise might not be able to afford a home. The funds can be used to help them get over the hurdles that come up when buying a first home. The $8,000 first-time homebuyer tax credit may be used by anyone who has never owned a home or has not owned property during the prior 36 months. In addition to some ownership requirements, there are income restrictions as well. If you’re single and have an adjusted gross income greater than $125,000 (or $225,000, if married), the tax credit is reduced or eliminated. There are other restrictions to the tax credit, but for most first-time homebuyers, if you make less than those amounts and have not owned a home in the prior 36 months, you should qualify. If you’re married, both you and your spouse must not have owned a home for the prior three years to qualify for the firsttime homebuyer tax credit. But you’ll have to hurry, you have to enter into a contract for the purchase of that home prior by April 30, 2010, and close on that home by June 30, 2010. Beyond qualifying for a homebuyer tax credit, the basic rules of purchasing a home still apply to you. If you have poor credit, you may not qualify for a loan to purchase a home. If you don’t have enough saved up to buy a home, you may not be able to put down enough cash and pay for the closing costs and other costs of purchase.
While you say you’ve had a great rental history, you may need to prove that by providing copies of checks that were cashed on time or a letter from your landlord to the bank, showing your on-time payments. What has caused your poor credit? Late or missed payments? Too much debt relative to the maximum amount of credit? Judgments entered against you? These pieces of negative information could prevent you from qualifying for a loan. While the Federal Housing Administration says it will grant a loan to a homebuyer with a credit score of 580, if you have 10 percent to put down in cash, in reality there are virtually no lenders that are willing to shoulder the risk. Most lenders won’t approve you for a loan if your credit score is below 640 or even 680. You should go over your credit report with a finetooth comb and determine what you have done wrong in the past that can be corrected. You can get a free copy of your credit history from each of the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and Trans Union) at www.AnnualCreditReport.com. At that site, you will be offered your credit score for about $8. You don’t need to pay the fee to get your credit histories, but you might want to know your credit score. Once you review your credit history from one or all of the credit bureaus, you will be able to tell where you have gone wrong in the past. The credit reports will indicate which accounts have been paid late, which accounts were closed with balances on them, which bills you never paid and where you have high balances left to be paid to creditors. If you have too much debt, this might not be the right time for you to take on more debt to buy a home. Renting may be better for you than buying a home – even with the first-time homebuyer credit. The $8,000 first-time homebuyer tax credit may be a great one-time hit, but you could quickly wind up in financial trouble if the property isn’t affordable over the long run. Samuel J. Now is the time to buy a flat-screen TV Article Resource Association
Americans may be curbing spending across the board, but many are still willing to lay down their dollars for a certain kind of luxury – the high-tech kind that hangs on the wall of your family room and makes you feel like you’re right there on the field at your favorite sporting event. Even though sales of flatscreen TVs have yo-yoed in the past year and a half, overall, analysts view the industry as healthy, and likely to remain so. In fact, a recent survey by PriceGrabber.com revealed that 20 percent of the men polled consider a flat-screen high-definition TV a necessity rather than a luxury. In 2009, more than 53 percent of American households have at least one HDTV, according to the Cable and Telecommunications Association for Marketing, the Web site
ScreenSleuth.com reports. That’s an 18 percent increase over last year, the site points out. Retailers haven’t missed the fact that flat-screen televisions are among the few big-ticket items Americans are still willing to buy. They’ve responded by lowering prices and offering deals and incentives. These deals, plus wider availability of products and services like designer wall mounts and HDTV programming make it a great time to upgrade your set to a flat screen. Consider these compelling facts if you’re considering purchasing an HDTV: • Some major discount chains are offering free shipping on flat screens if you purchase online and have the product shipped to a chain location near you. That means if the TV of your choice is out of stock in the store, you can buy it online and pick it up at your local

store without spending anything on shipping and delivery. • Manufacturers have started offering HDTVs with integrated Blu-ray players, so you can enjoy two of today’s hottest entertainment experiences in a single product. • Most major cable companies now offer a variety of high definition channels, including movies and sports, so you can enjoy the full benefit of your HDTV. • Online coupon Web sites offer coupon codes, discounts and deals on flat screens that will make you feel like you’re getting away with something. Finding an online discount is as easy as Googling the words “flat
screen coupon codes.” • Some manufacturers are offering extended warranties of five years or more on flat screens. That means your flat screen would likely be under warranty until the technology improves and you’re ready to upgrade to a new model. • Increased competition, including a number of new manufacturers, has helped drive flat screen prices down faster than practically any other entertainment technology. Anyone remember how long it took for VCR prices to fall below $500? Or for video game consoles to cost less than $200? By comparison, flat-screen TV prices have fallen quickly.
Q: My furnace is in my attic where I recently had insulation blown in. Ever since, my furnace is sweating and causes the ceiling to get wet. How do I stop the condensation? A: Any equipment that produces condensation and is located above a finished area of the home must have a drained catch pan installed under the unit to prevent the type of problems you are experiencing. There are two areas of the home that property owners fail to investigate on a routine basis: the foundation crawlspace and the attic. Any form of water needs to be addressed as soon as it is discovered. If homeowners discover water in their basement, they would immediately take actions. But some homeowners consider attics “out of sight and out of mind.” Elevated moisture levels lead to wood decay, rot, rust, mold and mildew. Hardwood looks stunning while saving space Keep your linen closet organized
Article Resource Association
“There probably isn’t a room in the house where we don’t store something,” writes Mervyn Kaufman in his new book, “Store It!” from Filipacchi Publishing. “Lack of space is certainly a challenge, but it is superseded in every instance by how best to use that space.” But before adding or rearranging storage in any room, Kaufman suggests you examine and evaluate. Keep what’s needed. Then, begin your space-saving journey. The American Hardwood Information Center, www.HardwoodInfo.com, recommends you consider the following creative tips for practical, yet beautiful, ways to increase storage potential throughout your home. First impressions are lasting ones, so if totes and umbrellas, shoes and boots are cluttering the entrance of your home, make them disappear without becoming inaccessible. Consider a bench with added storage space under a lift-up seat as a convenient clutter catcher, complete with niches for stashing caps, gloves and scarves yet a handy spot for shoe-boot exchanges. Splurge on a wall-mounted hardwood cabinet or a handsome hardwood storage piece to hide keys, garage door openers, newspapers and mail, keeping them out of sight yet close at hand as needed. Don’t let the idea of a formal living room dissuade you from making it a storage workhorse. A coffee table with an open shelf or shallow drawers can be more than an elegant surface for coffee service or a floral arrangement. Corners and wall space between and around windows cry out for hardwood chests and unique built-ins to display collectibles or stash coasters, cocktail napkins and other entertaining essentials. And the warm colors and unique grain patterns of hardwoods are guaranteed to enhance your room decor. Add greater functionality to your kitchen by incorporating hardwood cabinets with accessories that remove clutter and make neatness second nature – wooden dividers to organize drawers, carousel shelving so nothing gets buried in corner cabinets, deep cabinet drawers to store cookware or stacked dinnerware. And be creative. Fill unused space between base cabinets with retractable kitchen-towel bars or narrow
Linen closets often attract more than linens, turning into the catchall for anything bed- and bath-related. Here are some organizing tips. Purge and Prepare First, identify what you need to store in your linen closet. Professional organizer Betsy Peterson recommends categorizing items, and donating items you’re not using. For larger items, she advises homeowners to “think outside the closet.” Remember that “just because it’s a pillow doesn’t mean it has to go in the linen closet.” Stylish baskets help organize towels and toiletries in the closet.

pull-out spice drawers. Even install a shallow tilt-out drawer in front of your sink for sponges or small-scale cleaning tools. Today’s dining rooms double as libraries, music rooms or places to do homework or crafts. If cramped for storage, look for a dining table – new or heirloom – with drawers beneath its top surface. Beautiful hardwood storage – a hutch, sideboard or breakfront – lends practicality, warmth and style, as long as it complements the look of your dining table and chairs. A wall of books, whether in fine hardwood furniture or built-in shelving, makes use of wall space and adds character. Hardwood cabinet options abound as you look to increase the functionality of your family room. Near the TV, stereo or beside the kids’ play area, consider freestanding hardwood storage – a hutch, entertainment center, a clutch of bookcases. And utilize overlooked spaces by adding a low cupboard under a window – ideal for spare pillows and throws; building a window seat – either with drawers or a hinged top; placing a low bookcase against the back of a sofa. Simply organize and store essentials according to where you’ll use

them. Why not establish a unique “floating” home office? It doesn’t matter where you place it. What’ll make it work is where you “float” it and how you store what you want to keep there. Find and refinish a hardwood secretary, then give it wheels and let it “float.” It’ll be handy for bill-paying when the desk folds down and a decorative accent piece when not in use. Or mobilize a stylish hardwood desk or table with detachable storage shelves; then get to work. As room requirements change, “float” the workstation to its new home – whatever the situation will allow. And finally, end those bedroom blahs by eliminating clutter. Hardwood dressers with deep drawers increase storage efficiency. Nightstands with niches or shallow drawers are great for glasses, remote controls and reading material. Open shelving with pull-out baskets can store socks, hose, scarves and undergarments. And consider adding a window seat to store extra quilts and linens. True, only you may see the room, but an uncluttered bedroom – yours or your kids’ – is the most livable one.
Opt for Adjustable Shelves If you already have shelves, consider handy add-ons like under-mount wire baskets or shelf dividers. Each Item in its Proper Place Keep towels and bedsheets front and center. Store seasonal or occasional items in the back or at the top of the closet, or in another place entirely, like the front-hall closet. Stack beach towels behind regularly used towels, or higher up with other lessused items. Bulky items like comforters, quilts and pillows that are for guests or that are rotated seasonally can be stored. Towels To get the most storage space for bulky towels, it’s best to fold them in thirds lengthwise, then into a rectangle. Place on shelves at eye level or below, so the edges face toward the back for a neat appearance. If your closet is on the smaller side, consider rolling your towels for extra space. Sheets Corral multiple sets of sheets by storing them neatly in a matching pillowcase. If you have a lot of beds in different sizes, try buying differentcolored sheets for each one.
Quick, convenient and only a click away...it’s that simple
