Make use of fall’s free-fertilizer By Joe Lamp’l Scripps Howard News Service

Fall is in the air. The mornings are cool and crisp, the leaves are changing and college football is in full swing. It’s clearly my favorite time of year. But those reasons aren’t what make it so great for me. As lovely as deciduous trees are when their leaves are in glorious shades of red, yellow, orange and rust, my favorite part of this season is after the leaves have fallen. Once the now-brown leaves begin to blanket my lawn and beds, I know that it is compost time. To be clear, I don’t relish the work of clearing off those leaves any more than you do. But I do have a deep appreciation for what they will mean to my garden and landscape a few months from now, so I am happy to prepare the way. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Where most people see leaf debris as trash, along with hours of raking, bagging and hauling, I see garden beds blanketed in rich organic compost. Before they fall to the ground, leaves contain 50 to 80 percent of the nutrients that are extracted from the earth by tree roots. I will recycle this precious resource to replenish the soil and nourish all that grows within it. As the leaves break down, earthworms will feast on them and then burrow deeper into the soil, de-

positing castings, and thus adding even more valuable nutrients and oxygen while improving drainage in the process. Beneficial fungi and bacteria will also assist in decomposition, consuming this raw leaf material and returning it in a nutrientrich form that can be utilized by plant and tree roots more efficiently and effectively than anything man has ever created. Within weeks after these shredded leaves are applied around my garden beds, they’ll begin a transformation into composted organic matter that promotes the life of soil-dwelling organisms. Which in turn fortifies the plants and trees to be more pestand disease-resistant. And what makes composted organic matter amazing is that no matter what condition your soil is in to begin with, compost will help make loose soil retain moisture, and compacted soil will drain better. As much as I relish this gift of nature for my garden, I see another opportunity to justify its use in the name of environmental stewardship. By keeping leaves, grass clippings and other yard waste at home, we can reduce overall landfill volume by 20 percent. Rather than ending up as unnecessary trash, these organic amendments could be going into our own gardens to enrich the soil while reducing the need for supplemental fertilizers and other unnecessary chemicals.

Modern

Styles

New look for homes is fresh and comfortable Article Resource Association

The “modern” of the new millennium is taking a turn from the past. Extremist modern decorating – with angled edges, geometric shapes and cube-inspired items – has evolved. Today’s soft-modern is welcoming and easy to live in – with delicate designs, flowing lines and understated details. Up-todate and unfussy, this new modern look is fresh and comfortable. “Soft modern decorating is really the wave of the future,” says Judy Riley, vice president of design at Moen. “It bypasses all the fleeting trends and features a comfortable, confident look that still manages to be fresh and current. Plus, its style is truly timeless – with clean, simple lines and a spacious, uncluttered feel – the soft modern approach will look as good in 10 years as it does today.”

To begin integrating soft modern style cues in your home, try these tips. • Light, fresh colors form the ideal backdrop for this decorating style. If you’re worried that neutral tones will show scuffs and dirt spots, don’t – paints, such as Porcelain from Pratt & Lambert are manufactured to be extremely durable. Porcelain actually allows you to scrub the walls without damaging the paint finish, so any accidental dirt marks or spills can easily be cleaned. • Following the direction of the walls, flooring should be neutral, comfortable to the foot and easy to maintain. Luxury vinyl tile, such as NAFCO by Tarkett, features attractive designs to fit any room of your house and closely mimics the classic, sophisticated looks of authentic tile, plank, stone, slate and other natural textures. • When considering lighting, make the most of natural light from windows and skylights. For accent lighting, try small pendant lights and wall-mounted lights – which can disperse light throughout the room for a soft, romantic

effect. • Furniture should be relaxed and comfortable – think sectional, overstuffed couches and chairs. Another trademark look of the soft modern style is that everything doesn’t have to match – an unmatched look is completely appropriate for this welcoming decorating trend. Once you’ve initiated the overall soft modern decor style in your home, you can choose certain rooms in which to concentrate. A good rule of thumb is to start with the rooms you use most, such as the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. • In the kitchen, the focal point should be your dining table. Any shape will coordinate well with a soft modern flair. However a solid wood table is not only beautiful, but is also easy to care for and virtually lasts forever. Another nice option fitting of this design style is a glass-topped table. You can get the best of both worlds with Crate & Barrel’s Halo table, which features a beautiful glass top that’s perfectly flat on the surface but has a deep,

light-refracting reverse bevel on the underside. A solid chestnut wood base echoes the halo with its own center top ring in a deep, rich cognac. • In the bathroom, concentrate on the often-used sink area. Here, it’s the faucet that should take center stage. For a clean, uncluttered look to complement a stylish sink, try the new Fina single-handle lavatory faucet from ShowHouse by Moen. Featuring soft modern style cues, highlights of the faucet include its high-arc, marquise-shaped spout, lever handle and contemporary-shaped base. The beautifully designed faucet also features a flow-optimized aerator for water savings. “We’re finding that homeowners are looking for softer, modern styles featuring smooth lines, curved surfaces and rounded features,” says Shawn Hardy, ShowHouse brand manager. “The Fina collection offers a unique combination of modern styling with graceful, elegant details – and now provides homeowners additional design options with the single-handle faucet.”

Additionally, the Fina faucet has been certified to meet WaterSense criteria, meaning the fixture meets the Environmental Protection Agency’s guidelines as an environmentally responsible and efficient product. The faucet flows at 1.5 gallons per minute (gpm), versus the traditional flow of 2.2 gpm – providing consumers the sensational water experience they are accustomed to, while reducing water usage by up to 32 percent. • Finally, in the bedroom, the center of attention should be the bed. Look for strong headboards which don’t overwhelm the room and add your personal flair to the style. Pottery Barn offers a number of styles which fit a soft modern design style – including the innovative Stratton Smart Technology headboard, which provides several built-in storage options as well as a centralized plug-in point for lamps, clocks, cell phones and more. To add the finishing touch to your newly decorated home, place carefully selected accessories in each room.

Paintings hold more than visual appeal By Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson Scripps Howard News Service

Dear Helaine and Joe: I inherited two paintings of sailing ships about which I would like some information. One is named “Racing to Bermuda” and signed by J. Arnold. The same artist painted the second, titled “Macquarie.” Are they valuable? – A.W. Dear A.W.: Some paintings have huge monetary values, but the majority of paintings that most people hang on their walls do not. The primary value of this latter group is in the aesthetic appeal they have for their owners, or perhaps in the sentimental and familial connections they may represent. Before the advent of photography, if a family had a painting on the wall, it was probably that of an ancestor or perhaps a depiction of the homeowner(s) or children. If, however, the picture was purely decorative, it was likely to be a landscape or – if the family lived near the water – a seascape. The majority of these seascapes or maritime paintings were done in the Dutch or English tradition, and there are many collectors in the United States and Europe who find them compellingly attractive. Images with human figures performing tasks, ships tossed in turbulent seas, ships in famous military engagements and ships with flags that are identifiable are among the most eagerly collected maritime paintings. As to who might have painted these two particular works, there are two choices – one is John Arnold, and the other is Jay Arnold. There is some thought that these may be one and the same artist, but that is open to some conjecture and no positive proof either way could be found. These two paintings appear to be both in his style and encompass specific subjects that he often depicted. Unfortunately, there is no biographical information about this artist that we could find, except that a number of his paintings have come up for sale in 2007 and 2008. Jay Arnold is a mid-20th-century artist whose work titled “Macquarie” sold for $400 at Myers Fine Art in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Nov. 30, 2008. This vibrant painting is a night scene, and should be valued in the $800 to $1,000 range for insurance purposes. We would like to have known the size of both of these paintings, but we feel that “Racing to Bermuda” is worth a tad less than “Macquarie” and should be valued for insurance purposes in the $600 to $700 range. Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson are the authors of “Price It Yourself” (HarperResource, $19.95). Contact them at Treasures in Your Attic, P.O. Box 27540, Knoxville, TN 37927. E-mail them at treasures@knology.net.

Spiders

not so spooky

Carol O’Meara Colorado State University Extension

A tarantula came to live in my office recently, which means the other staff leave me alone more often than I’m used to. He’s a cute little thing, about the size of a Buick, but despite the enormous binder sitting on top of his cage, the office pool on when he’ll escape keeps getting larger. Native to the southeastern part of the state, this Oklahoma brown tarantula (Aphonopelma hentzi) was captured doing what all males of his ilk do once they approach the end of their lifespan: wander about looking for love. After years spent quietly tending the burrow, when the end is near, males go forth into the world searching for a mate. Too often, their quest ends in tragedy on the highway, as drivers rarely slow down to wait at spider crossings. Plucked from the road and brought north by a human who meant to save him this fate, this hapless fellow was for sale when my friends spotted it. Knowing I’m a sucker for rescue tarantulas, they bought it to live out its days – around two to three months – as the best Do Not Disturb sign my office has ever had. While tarantulas are commonly found in southeastern and southwestern Colorado, they aren’t normally encountered farther north. The larger arachnids scaring people along the Front Range are those with names such as wolfs, cats and orb weavers. The largest we’re likely to find are burrowing wolf spiders, (Geolycosa spp.), which are inclined to stroll about, entering homes as they hunt for food. But though they’re big, hairy and have huge eyes, they aren’t after your children, so there’s no need to pummel them with a broom. Try collecting them in a large cup or Tupperware container and taking them back

outdoors. If spiders dangling from webs give you the shivers, you might want to avoid the banded garden spider (Argiope trifasciata). Easily the largest orb weaver Colorado has, this silverwith-black-and-yellow stripes spider is a craftsman at spinning perfect webs. Though harmless, the banded garden spider warns people when they’re too close by grasping the web and jumping up and down, looking like it’s getting the momentum up for a leap at your jugular. Don’t worry, they won’t go airborne, but you should back slowly away. More commonly found is a web spinner of a different sort in garages, sheds and barns. In these shelters the catface, or monkyface, spider (Araneus gemmoides) likes to live. The small head accents the huge, bulbous abdomen, which on females can swell to an impressive quarter-inch diameter. The pair of rounded bumps on their back is what gives the spider the look of a cat’s face. These, too, are harmless, even though their legs sport wicked spines. Because many spiders in homes are seasonal

invaders, removing debris in and around the home is important for control. Clean up any woodpiles, rocks and compost piles near the house. Garages, cellars and crawl spaces must be kept uncluttered, which may encourage some of us to accept spiders in the house rather than constantly cleaning. Check weather-stripping and seal crevices on the home. Spiders that enter from outdoors do so through small breaks around windows and doors. Screens, tight-fitting doors and windows will help keep them out. Inside, move boxes in closets around frequently and vacuum under furniture to disrupt webs. Spiders dislike having areas disturbed and will often leave if webs are frequently broken. Fearful people can keep spiders at arm’s length by using a vacuum to destroy webs and pull spiders to their doom.

Keep your message center “The trend in the past several years has been to get away from having a message center in the kitchen, but I think that’s a mistake,” says Chicago designer Jessica Kalina, of Kalina Kitchen & Bath. “Most people have always used the kitchen as a place to hang the car keys or for the kids to store their homework or even to check recipes on the laptop. If that describes your household, you shouldn’t take that component of the design away and expect people to be able to change their ways.” – HGTV

If you’re dreaming about upgrading your kitchen, you have plenty of company. As people spend more time at home, they’re feeling a pent-up desire to change things up, especially in the kitchen. Only two in 10 consumers say they’re completely happy with their kitchens and 42 percent say they’d like to change a few things, according to the Research Institute for Cooking and Kitchen Intelligence. With trends leaning toward warm colors inside the home, many homeowners long for the look of cherry and other rich woods in everything from furniture to cabinetry, but are hampered by the high price point of such products. The good news is this high-end look can be achieved easily and economically while creating a custom appearance and gaining design flexibility in the process.

will work with other changes you may wish to make later. For example, one versatile type of wood that offers the rich look of cherry without the high cost is Alder, combined with a deep, rich finish. This wood type is found in relatively few kitchens, so it offers an exclusive look with added design flexibility. Diamond Cabinets’ expanded finishes line, which includes delicious new colors such as chocolate, cider, cranberry and harvest wheat, is available on the company’s new Alder wood cabinets, as well as on its classic Rustic Alder cabinets. Another idea is to choose a cabinet finish that crosses over into a variety of wood types. A chocolate finish, for instance can be used on either Alder cabinets or on everpopular Maple cabinets. All of the finishes are designed to blend easily with a variety of home interiors, including those with classic, contemporary,

coastal or cottage-style design themes. Even if you modify your home’s design throughout time, your cabinetry can transition beautifully.

Greater Design Flexibility As you look for greater design flexibility on the exterior of your cabinets, think about the interior of your cabinets, as well. If you’re only installing a few new things, with a little extra planning you can squeeze every inch out of your existing kitchen footprint by making the most out of every cabinet. Some cabinets are designed with fashionable exteriors that can be modified with an extra interior drawer of space in an area that usually goes to waste beneath the cabinet. An ingenious cabinet design called a Toekick Drawer can be added to a kitchen base cabinet, bringing valuable extra space to stash hard-to-organize items such as cookie sheets or baking pans.

Garages have become the dumping ground for our homes. Many are so stuffed with clutter that there is no longer room even to park the car. By designing a zone system we can free up enough room in our garage for everything that needs to be there. Following a common-sense approach to garage organization, professional organizer Marlene Hansen says “activity zones should be placed as close as possible to where the items will be used.” In the case of garden tools, the ideal placement is near a side door leading to the yard. If the garage has no side door, then the next best location is a spot close to the opening. Regardless of your green thumb, Hansen urges that all fertilizers, herbicides and other hazardous materials be stowed in a locked cabinet or, at the least, out of reach of little ones. And if you prefer the grass seed to

end up on the lawn rather than in a chipmunk’s cheeks, it should be stored in a metal container. Another area in the garage that could use some organizing is the space in front of vehicles. “Many people pull their cars into the garage much farther than they need to,” says Monica Friel, a professional organizer in Chicago. The freed-up space at the front of the garage is ideal for a vertical storage system, on which you can assemble all the automotive supplies, tools and car-care items like buckets, sponges, soap and wax. For people on a budget, Friel suggests affordable particleboard shelving and common peg board-and-hook systems. Hobbyists and tinkerers should consider buying (or building) a sturdy workbench. – Courtesy Douglas Trattner, HGTV

Tax credit will end soon By Chris Kissell bankrate.com

“There is a motivation for first-time home buyers to act, and we are seeing that activity big time,” he says. “If that motivation goes away in regard to the tax credit, yeah, it’s going to have an impact. And I could see it being somewhat significant.” Any slowdown associated with a decision to let the credit expire likely would be felt quickly, as buyers realize they’ve run out of time to find, bid on and close on a new home before the credit elapses, Sipe says.

First-time home buyers across the nation are scrambling to close on their purchases before the scheduled Nov. 30 expiration of the government’s $8,000 housing tax credit. “In literally the last 30 days in my area, there is a massive sense of urgency for first-time home buyers,” says Chris Sipe, senior mortgage consultant at Mason Dixon Funding in Frederick, Md. “We’re experiencing really high volume.” “There is a motivation for Proponents of the credit say it has sigfirst-time home buyers to act, nificantly boosted and we are seeing that activity home sales activity. big time. Home decor this fall reflects realism in textures, colors, details

By Kim Cook The Associated Press

Perhaps the biggest theme in home decorating going into fall is comfortable, real, personalized style. “The perfect-home look is over,” says Deborah Needleman, former editor-inchief of Domino magazine. “It is so not of this moment. We’re living in a freer time in terms of design and style. You can simultaneously love modern design, rustic pottery, some piece you picked up on the side of the street – all these things can live happily together in your home.” Where fashion goes, home decor is never far behind. And this fall, home retailers continue to take cues from decades past, such as ’60s and ’70s styles ranging from loose and relaxed to sophisticated and worldly. Watch for country-style furniture; cottage print textiles; farm animal motifs; quilts as wall hangings and throws; folk art and faux general-store signage as wall art; flour-sack pillow covers; baskets and hooked rugs. This isn’t throwback decor, with armies of ducks marching across the kitchen wallpaper or plaid ribbons festooning every chair; the vibe is comfortable, yet contemporary. The floral prints are updated, and graphic prints are bold. Wisteria has some striking game boards, unique replicas of old weather vanes and a variety of colorful quilts. Pottery Barn also stocks a quilt collec-

tion, as well as crewelwork pillows, galvanized steel serveware and cool repro signage. Americana is big. You’ll see the flag and other patriotic symbols rendered in faux-vintage painted wood, distressed cotton and painted tin. The colors of the warmer months take on a deeper tone, so the lilac becomes plum, and the sunny yellow is now ochre. Burnt orange and deep crimson remain important hues. If there’s such a thing as American Boho, then its sister must be Global Boho: Russian folk prints, needlepointed rugs, Moorish motifs, hammered silver Thai vases, handcrafted pottery and exotic Asian furniture. Homegoods has been touring the East Coast this summer with a mobile home full of style ideas. They recently set it up in Manhattan; Needleman was on hand, admiring colorful silk pillows, faux croc trays, and other eclectic, luxurious yet affordable furnishings. She’s teamed up with the retailer on a fun “Stylescope” – an online quiz that helps you define your own style. Hers, she says, is Bohemian Classic. “A Bohemian look is a reflection of its owner’s particular tastes and interests, and also I think, an appreciation of the best of what other cultures

have to offer,” she says. Textures are prominent this fall: faux reptile, suede and hammered tin. Crate & Barrel has several embroidered floral rugs and pillows worth considering, as well as slubby cotton curtains reminiscent of barkcloth. The ’70s were also made for all things Mexican; now we see beautiful Mexican-style ceramics showing up in stools and decorative items. In fact, ceramics of every sort are important; you’ll notice a lot of interesting craft in lampshades, vases and trays. In the ’60s we were hipsters, in the ’70s we were disco fans. We’ll see some of the groove and the glamour of these eras now and through the holidays, with metallics, glass and fur playing a role. Black and white furnishings stay strong, with shots of purple, sapphire, lime and chrome yellow. Look for clear Lucite tables, shag rugs, patent leather and steel furniture, and a lot of white.

Add a new bath in your small home Article Resource Association

Smaller homes are making a comeback. More families are hanging onto their existing homes and improving these smaller properties, instead of trading up. Maximizing livable space is how the American Institute of Architects describes this new trend, a by-product of a down new-housing and real estate market. Smaller remodel projects – finishing attics and basements – readily achieve that goal, making the home more enjoyable today while increasing its resale value tomorrow. Nearly 130 million homes are currently in need of work, including adjustments to meet “changing preferences and lifestyles,” such as family members returning home to live, according to the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University. As the owner of a smaller home, you should know that adding even a small bathroom is among the best investments you can make, typically returning 65 percent or more of the cost on resale. In the attic or the basement, you can save money on a bath addition by using macerating plumbing, which requires no digging for under-floor drainage piping. For this same reason, you can also convert an

existing room or even a closet into a new small bathroom to better accommodate guests or even family members moving into your home. No digging for drainage means a quicker, less messy and cheaper installation experience.

Quality & Satisfaction Guaranteed”

Install an up Toilet Known as an up toilet or abovefloor plumbing, macerating technology is the way to go, says East Taunton, Mass., plumber Mike Sikorski, who installs Saniflo brand products. Plumbing waste and water are pumped through small-diameter piping, which can be located inside the wall, right into the sewer or septic tank. Sikorski estimates that this type of system saves his customers $1,000 on average, “and that’s on the low

side,” he says.

Saving Money is Key Cost-saving projects like these are among the ways homeowners will most likely focus their future remodeling dollars, according to the 2009 Remodeling Market in Transition report prepared by the Joint Center. If you’re staying put in your smaller home, but want to improve its livability and long-term value, consider adding a bathroom with macerating plumbing.
