CANDICE TELLS ALL
Revealing the secrets of indestructible design Do you have to sacrifice style when you have kids? It’s an age-old design question many parents ask – and my clients, Nicole and Trevor, are no exception. The young couple live in a charming house with their two small children, but when I met them they were up to their ears in diapers and teddy bears. The couple spent a good deal of time in a large living /dining room that was disorganized and uninspiring, but they didn’t know how to improve it. They longed for a stylish, Candice Olson adult space where HGTV they could relax and entertain, but also needed a place that could weather juice boxes and muddy sneakers. Now, I know a thing or two about managing crayons, sticky, chocolate-pudding fingers and the occasional baby-food spitup. So, I happily called in my crew and geared up to give Nicole and Trevor a kidproof space with a cool, industrial, grownup vibe. The secret to this type of makeover centers around the principle of indestructible design – blending form and function in ways that ensure materials, fabrics and furnishings are durable and chic. With this in mind, I chose a variety of stylish, hardworking elements for the redesign. Things like raked wood, impenetrable stone and smudge-proof metal fit well with my design. I began by painting much of the wall space a relaxing shade of cream, and

Dear Helaine and Joe: I was given two bureaus by an elderly friend. They were purchased from Pane’s Furniture in Boston sometime between 1910 and 1930. The top drawer of each piece has a mark that looks like a pot of flowers. I would like to sell them, but refinishing them would cost about $600. How much more would they be worth if I did have them refinished? – T. D.

putting up gorgeous brown cork wallpaper along one wall of the adjoining living and dining rooms. The living area had a big non-functioning fireplace, but its brown stucco finish made it an eyesore. So, I painted it a beautiful shade of cream, put down some stone tiles and flanked it with new shelving units. I wanted to install a gas insert, but (due to venting issues) opted instead for a decorative look that features candles, a mirror insert and a tempered glass safety screen. I got rid of the room’s outmoded furniture and put in a three-piece sofa in a resilient, creamy-colored outdoor fabric. I also chose a beautiful brown armchair, a round wooden coffee table and a dentproof vintage steel footlocker that will function as a side table. I then upped the color ante with a beautiful Ikat patterned fabric that contains shades of blue, green, brown and cream. The material was used to make drapes for both rooms and it served as my jumpingoff point for the accent colors in the space. I also put down a rugged, multicolored patchwork rug that can be trusted to hide all manner of kid spills. In the dining room, I installed a long,

durable white vinyl banquette along the cork-papered wall. This banquette will function as part of the seating for a new table that consists of reclaimed wood atop an indestructible steel base. I chose cool white dining-room chairs and two funky high chairs that can later be converted into toddler chairs. When choosing furnishings for children, I look for durability. After all, design is an investment – and it has to grow with you. I then lightened and brightened the rooms by putting up two industrial-inspired pendant lights above the diningroom table and two lamps on either side of the fireplace. Lastly, I added a host of accessories – vases, artwork, accent pillows – and made sure the breakables were well out of reach of curious little hands. The verdict? Ignore the naysayers. I say you can have it all – kids and style. By combining resilient yet fashionable fabrics, finishes and furnishings, Nicole and Trevor’s space went from bland to beautiful and is now ready for splendid dinners, relaxing evenings – and a messy tyke or two.
Dear T. D.: During the 20th century, some furniture manufacturers branded their products or applied labels in a drawer. Unfortunately, we could not see the trademark on these pieces well enough to identify them. As for Pane’s Furniture, it might be possible that T. D. is referring to Paine Furniture, which was founded in Boston in 1835 and went out of business in 2000. There is no question that these pieces were manufactured and not handmade, and we date their origin much closer to 1930 than 1910. The style of this chestof-drawers is popularly called French Provincial. American manufacturers made a variety of styles under this “French Provincial” umbrella, and the pieces in today’s question fit into this category. These two items probably were part of a bedroom grouping that also included either one or two beds, perhaps a vanity and bench, and one or two bedside tables. In almost every instance, refinishing diminishes the value of antiques significantly. The insurance replacement value of this chest and dresser base in their current condition is somewhere between $350 and $500. Refinishing them will not raise it much, if at all.

Since Minneapolis-based Fair Isaac invented the concept of a credit score, it’s been one of the key factors lenders consider when deciding whether to approve your loan application. That hasn’t changed. In fact, lenders are now looking for higher credit scores than ever before. Managing your credit history is a skill that’s becoming increasingly important, as we move to an electronic society. You need to regularly check your credit history, and if there are errors or your history contains erroneous information, you’ll need to work on correcting those problems. You’ll also need to think about how each credit account you open or close, and how you use the lines of credit that you have, will affect your credit history and ultimately your credit score. Having a higher credit score will save you thousands of dollars throughout the life of any loan you take out. You can get a free copy of your credit history and pay for your credit score (around $9) at AnnualCreditReport.com. This is the site maintained by the three credit reporting bureaus: Equifax, TransUnion and Experian. Have a vibrant living space
Having a vibrant living room is a must, but it doesn’t have to break your wallet. Consider these tips, and let the magic happen. • Collect one nice piece from everywhere you go to add meaning to your decor. Look with different eyes at heirlooms you’ve inherited – old books, dishware, stitchery, clothing, even your grandfather’s pipe – to see how they might be displayed. • Good rugs are costly. Search garage sales and Internet auctions for better buys. Even with fading and wear and tear, used rugs can be cleaned and blemishes camouflaged, depending on how you place the furniture. • Add details to an inexpensive light fixture to give it a designer look. Coat it in a bold paint color, add fringe and beads, or change the crystals. Introduce pattern and texture by stenciling and/or upholstering the existing shades. • If you can’t travel to foreign destinations yourself, take advantage of shops that sell affordable handmade crafts and other decorative imports, including masks, dolls, statues and unusual artwork.

splashing your walls with open air scenes, here are a few ways to beat the winter doldrums: • Landscape indoors through art. A great way to make your home feel cozier in the winter is to decorate with landscape art that reminds you of the beauty of the season.
• Feed the fire. There’s nothing better than the natural heat and aromas created by a flame burning in a fireplace during a cold winter day. • Bring the forest inside. The natural smell of pine is invigorating and reminds us of being outside. – ARA

Reflect Action No matter how big your bathroom feels to you, there’s no downside in making it feel bigger. Use mirrors to make the room appear larger than it is. Sink into It Sinks play a pivotal role in the usability and desirability of both bathrooms and kitchens. In baths, replace dated, singlebasin vanities with dual-sink models, which are in high demand by homebuyers. For kitchen sinks, opt for a blend of practicality and beauty.
