Yolande and Huy have gone from one extreme to the other. After years of living in a tiny apartment in New York City, a great job offer enticed the couple and their two young daughters north of the border and into a great big house. However, while they were thrilled with their new home, all of the newfound space had them feeling a bit small. Their basement, where they spent most of their time, was bigger than their whole apartment in the Big Apple. But the chilly room was tall on space and short on style. Huy, who grew up in Denmark, wanted the basement to reflect a clean, modern Scandinavian design. And they both wanted a place the whole family could enjoy – a room where Yolande could do her sewing, the kids could play games and they could all watch television together. So I grabbed my team and got set to turn Yolande and Huy’s icy warehouse of a room into a warm, inviting family room. The basement was already finished, complete with high ceilings and hardwood floors, so no real structural work was needed. I started by

putting up a creamy coat of paint and then divided the room into three functional areas: a lounge area, a work area and a play area. In the lounge area, I created a show-stopping feature wall with a new gas fireplace. The modern arrangement boasts a long, linear gas insert and a massive surround of gray-and-white-marble mosaic tiles. Not only is it eye-catching, it brings much-needed warmth into the cold space. I then flanked the fireplace with a custom-built cabinetry unit that holds a big-screen television, other media equipment, books and some display items. I put in a huge, modern, linen-colored sectional in this area that lends itself to great fireplace viewing and TV watching. I then punched up the color quotient with throw pillows in various configurations of yellows, blues and greens. To finish things off, I put in a coffee table, a few side tables and an area rug with a heated underpad. I turned the wall adjoining the feature wall into a work area. I installed a long quartz countertop that serves as a desk, installed a lot of storage and put up a pin board in a dreamy blue

fabric. I then added beautiful wood blinds to the windows above the countertop and put up stunning drapery on the French doors. In the play area, I put in a rounded table that is perfect for Yolande’s sewing or the kids’ crafts and games. Above this area, I put up a fun and funky light fixture in a woven, kid-proof fabric. I then installed an entire wall of custom cabinetry that looks like a series of cubbyholes and will keep the kid clutter hidden. This wall also boasts wallpaper in a large-scale lattice pattern that acts as a subtle backdrop to the cabinetry. After some final touches – including lamps, pictures, artwork and plants – the basement was ready for the whole family. By turning up the heat – artistically and literally – I turned this once-cold and cavernous basement into a warm, contemporary retreat that suits Yolande and Huy’s new life and their old New York state of mind. Now that’s divine. Interior decorator Candice Olson is host of HGTV’s “Divine Design.” For more ideas, information and show times, visit www.HGTV.com or www.divinedesign.tv.

Potted bulbs perfect for indoor garden Fragrant hyacinths are one of the joys of the winter indoor garden. Buy potted bulbs already forced and the hard work’s done. Even before the flower color starts to show, the green buds poking out from the top of the bulb give a hint of the flower shape to come. It’s fun to create an indoor winter garden by replanting an assortment of small potted plants into one larger pot. Pick up several potted hyacinths at the supermarket or home center and transplant the nascent bulb plants into a decorative pot with a drainage hole. Use a bagged potting soil mix. No food or fertilizer necessary. All the food the plant needs is stored in the bulb. – Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Center

amount of nitrogen fertilizer you put on your lawn. Too much nitrogen and your lawn mower will become your best friend, since your grass will grow so quickly you’ll need to mow often. The best defense against weeds is to grow a healthy, dense lawn that will out compete weeds trying to muscle in on your turf. If you have a thin lawn and want to over-seed it with grass this season, do not apply preemergent. Spring is a good time to over-seed cool season grasses into areas that are threadbare. For best results, core-aerate the lawn before you spread seed. The seed will fall into the holes made by the aerator, which act as ideal germination chambers for grass seed. As the seedling sprouts and germinates, its roots dig deeper into soil that has been aerated. When core-aerating, pass the machine over the area several times in differing directions, making hundreds of holes in the ground. Water the lawn lightly every day until the seed has germinated. Grass seed is a slow germinator, so be prepared to wait 14 to 20 days for it to sprout. The most common mistake in over-seeding is from impatience with the germination time – many gardeners give up too soon and cut off the water just when the young sprouts first emerge. If you have already applied pre-emergent, wait two to four months before trying to over-seed. The pre-emergent will breakdown in the sunlight during the summer months and allow for germination of new seed. The secret is in the lawn care. For better turf with minimum work, set the stage now for a dense, healthy yard by planning to weed and over-seed your turfgrass. Timing is crucial for controlling grassy weeds, whose seeds fell to the soil in fall. Lying quietly on the lawn until spring soil temperatures soar into the 50s, the seeds can sprout and grow quickly before you’re ready to stop them. Pre-emergent weed control is helpful in keeping weeds at bay, and for best results, plan now to put it on your lawn. The right time to apply pre-emergent weed control is mid-March to early April, two to four weeks before the seeds germinate. Too often the pre-emergent is put down after the seeds have sprouted; weeds already up and growing are unharmed by it. As with all products, follow the package directions when applying pre-emergent. Regardless of whether it is derived synthetically or naturally, like corn gluten, pre-emergents need only be applied in a light layer across the lawn. Put down too much, and there is a risk of stunting the grass’ root system, causing poor performance later in the summer when heat takes its toll. Corn gluten contains a fair amount of nitrogen, so if you opt to use it, decrease the

Selecting art to display in your home

Art &

Soul

A variety of art from different mediums are on display at The Great Frame Up in downtown Longmont. (Paul Litman/Times-Call)

By Annie Walsh

Longmont Times-Call

A

rt is a window into life and lifestyle. The artwork displayed in a home reflects passion, inspiration and taste. Still, finding the right artwork can be a

challenge. Collecting new art should be an exciting and explorative process. While there are no set rules to follow, there are a few tips that should make the process a little less daunting, and a little more fun. “The first things to consider are medium, subject matter and what people are passionate about,” says Dave Ianazzo, co-owner of The Great Frame Up in Longmont. “Art is supposed to make you happy – bring out emotions,” he says. Art is about passion and a subjective opinion on what is beautiful and meaningful. Try to stay away from fickle trends or what’s showcased as popular in catalogs. “You want to be able to look at that artwork years later and say ‘I’m really happy that I bought that,’” Iannazo says. When looking for a piece, think about color schemes, styles and the dimensions of the space. Art can be used to set a mood, add an accent or simply inspire. Joanna Kirves, executive director of Longmont Council for the Arts, has great advice for firsttime buyers. “Go galley hopping and look at all types of media,” she says. “You will find yourself drawn to the same styles or media at each place. Then focus on that and start looking for art you like.” If you’re willing to spend a little more on a

piece, try to find something that stimulates an emotional response. If the art is being used to fill a space, go for a more classic style. Another important element to consider is where the artwork will be displayed. In the bedroom, think about choosing a more intimate style. “Something soothing, relaxing, art that takes you somewhere else,” Kirves says. For the dining room, go for a more formal statement piece that can enhance conversation. The family room is a great place for an old movie poster and the bathroom works for fun artwork. “I even like art in kids rooms,” she says. “Start them early.” Don’t forget to consider that there are incredible, inexpensive prints of original works that can add life to any room. They are perfect starter pieces to focus your taste and style preferences. “Your first piece of art is a stepping stone,” Iannazo says. After the first piece, whatever the medium, expect that there will be more art to come. It may be difficult to walk passed a local gallery without finding the next piece of art that would work perfectly on a bare wall at home. Art is a lifetime investment, a way to tell guests who you are on a personal level. It’s not necessary to spend big bucks on trying to impress people if it has no personal meaning. Most often, the best art is something from the heart. A photo from a favorite vacation can be blown up, framed and look like something from a gallery, or a child’s finger-painting can look like an expensive abstract. Sometimes all it takes is a framed print to tie together a room, or even an entire house.

House bought for parents disqualifies buyer from credit

Difficult to distinguish between real and bogus Pablo Picasso lithographs

see if you qualify. I don’t believe the federal government will change the terms of the homebuyer tax credit, although stranger things have happened. If the housing market continues to deteriorate, the federal government might agree to extend the tax credit.

By Helaine Fendelman and Joe Rosson Scripps Howard News Service

Dear Helaine and Joe: We purchased this piece by Picasso 18 years ago and are curious about its worth. The print appears to be No. 126 from an edition of 200. It is in excellent condition. The print is signed in the plate and has a handwritten signature in the lower right corner. It is dated 12-4-58. – S.D., Spearfish, S.D.

Q: My friend has a home he lives in and owns a different house in another state about to be foreclosed on. The foreclosure happened because after his divorce, his name came off the deed to the property but not off the mortgage. His ex-spouse failed to make the payments. He owes about $290,000, but the property is worth only $200,000. Can he lose the equity in his primary residence and any money he has in the bank in this foreclosure? A: Your friend’s biggest problem is that he didn’t insist at the time of his divorce that his ex-spouse refinance the property to take his name off of the mortgage. I don’t know if the foreclosed property is in a non-recourse state. If it is a non-recourse state, then the lender would foreclose on the property and would not be entitled to go after other assets. Otherwise, the lender would have to file for a deficiency judgment. Your friend will need to hire an attorney to make sure that once the property is foreclosed upon, the bank will not have the right to go after him for any other money owed. Your friend might also want to talk to the divorce attorney who helped him out and get more information.

Dear S.D.: Before discussing art, we always make it absolutely clear that an appraisal cannot be done from photographs. There are too many variables, and an in-person examination is necessary to determine a value with any authority. Pablo Picasso entered the world in Malaga, Spain, on Oct. 25, 1881, and by his teenage years was skilled in drawing and painting. Throughout the years, Picasso’s style continued to evolve dramatically, and he helped invent cubism, surrealism and postmodernism. In short, Picasso is credited with helping to invent 20th-century modern art. Much of his work is considered to be extremely important, and the best, one-ofa-kind original pieces can bring prices well into the millions of dollars at auction. Picasso was extremely prolific, and it is estimated that he produced 50,000 works during his lifetime. This includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, rugs, tapestries and thousands of prints or lithographs. Between 1945 and 1949, Picasso produced a truly impressive grouping of

lithographs that number about 200 different images. These were produced in close cooperation with Henri Deschamps, a professional printmaker from Atelier Mourlot, the renowned art publisher and art workshop founded by Francois Mourlot in 1852. Picasso may have created the lithograph in today’s question for a peace demonstration held in Stockholm, Sweden, from July 16 to July 22, 1958. It is called the “Bouquet of Peace,” but there is some doubt whether Picasso actually created this piece. We feel there’s a possibility that this piece is bogus, and if we are correct, the value is less than $200. If genuine, the value would probably be in the $2,500 to $3,000 range. Q: In August of 2006, I bought a house for my parents because I had excellent credit. I was trying to help out my desperate parents, who were unable to buy on their own. They pay the mortgage each month and other expenses of the property, but the house is in my name. I lived there a year and then got married and moved out. Now my husband and I want to buy a house. My mother was going to be the co-signer with my husband. The problem is because I’m not a first-time homebuyer, I don’t Ilyce Glink qualify for the tax Tribune Media Services credit. Therefore, even though my husband is a first-time homebuyer and I’m not going to be in the mortgage, we can’t take advantage of this incentive. Is there anything I qualify for? A: I wish I could help you secure a homebuyer tax credit, but there’s nothing I can do for you. Unfortunately, the house that your parents now live in is in your name and you lived in that home for about a year. While there is no tax credit prohibition against being an owner of investment real estate, you cannot have owned a primary residence in the past three years. It sounds as though you’re close to being out of the property for three years, but the thing is, you have to sign a contract to buy a new home by April 30, 2010, and must close on the new home by June 30, 2010. I can’t tell from your e-mail whether the timing will work out or not. You can walk through a well-done questionnaire at HomeBuyerTaxCredit.com to

Educating consumers about predatory lending they can roll the costs into the loan. This makes for a higher loan amount and subsequently higher mortgage payments.

By Gay E. Kuhlmann Special to the Times-Call

Predatory lending refers to the use of unfair and abusive mortgage lending practices that result in a borrower paying more through high fees or interest rates than the borrower’s credit history warrants. It involves fraudulent practices that target vulnerable consumers and plays on the hopes and dreams of innocent people whose investment in their home is their security. Due to the complicated nature of mortgage transactions, it is often difficult for individuals to tell the difference between legitimate and predatory loans.

Do you feel pressured? • Be suspicious of harassing phone calls or solicitations from lenders who say they can give you a quick approval. • The same goes for lenders who offer “guaranteed” low-interest loans – as long as you apply over the phone and pay them money today. Does it sound too good to be true? • Check references and call your local Better Business Bureau to ask if their have been complaints about any of the lenders you are considering.

Protect Yourself from Lending Abuse Abusive or “predatory” lenders push unusually high interest rates and fees. They are often illegal, as well. Here’s how to tell a good loan from a bad one.

Do you trust the lender? • Before borrowing, you should know exactly what you are getting and what you are paying. Never be afraid to ask questions or explanations about fees, terms or conditions you do not understand and never sign a blank form. • Also, be sure that prepaying for credit life insurance is the best way to for you to go. It will protect your family by paying off the loan if you should die but paying up-front premiums can add to the monthly cost of your loan. • Think twice about a loan that has a

Have you shopped around for the best deal? • Check with other lenders, including banks and credit unions, for their rates and fees. • Compare the interest rates and the total costs with several lenders. • Beware of high up-front fees and percentage “points” even if the lender says

large amount due at the end of scheduled payments. This type of loan has advantages for some people but the final or “balloon” payment could be beyond your ability to repay. • Be cautious of lenders who tell you not to worry if you can’t pay for your mortgage – they will help you refinance your loan if you need to. Predatory lenders make money from the high fees and closing costs they will charge you to refinance your loan. Report Abusive Lenders If you have been a victim of lending abuse, let others know. Your complaint could save others from being victims, too. Call your local office of consumer affairs or your state Attorney General’s office – they are listed in the Government section of the phone book. Report your experience to the Federal Trade Commission. The agency looks out for predatory lending scams and frauds. Call 877-FTCHELP (382-4357), write to Federal Trade Commission, CRC-240, Washington, D.C. 20580, or visit www.ftc.gov to file a complaint online. Gay E. Mesa Yellow wins award Mesa Yellow is the first hybrid blanket flower with a controlled plant habit and prolific flowering. The 3-inch daisy like flowers and globe shaped seed heads offer a superior presentation of color which continues throughout the summer. Gardeners will be glad to know they can cut the blooms for casual bouquets. The flowers, when left on the plants, will attract butterflies. Judges noted the improved plant habit of Mesa Yellow with mature plants reaching 20 to 22 inches in a full sun garden location. The neat, mounded plants are adaptable to smaller space gardens or any type of containers. When planted near the inside edge of the container, they will cascade down the container. They are relatively maintenance free. Mesa Yellow plants proved to be wind and rain resistant, meaning the plants recover quickly from severe weather. – Special to the Times-Call

water. Place the container or pot near a window but out of direct sunlight. If you have a lidded container, cover it to hold in moisture until seeds germinate. If using a pot instead of a plastic-lidded container, cover it with a plastic bag during germination stage. Cleaning oven racks require a lot of elbow grease

March 6, 2010

By Rhonda Prast Star Tribune

Cleaning oven racks is a twice-a-year chore for me, unless I’m really doing a lot of baking and roasting. I have an easy way to clean the oven interior – my oven has a selfcleaning feature. I had cooked a lovely baked chicken in the oven without covering the bird with foil. What a mess. The racks were stained and sticky, but I did not want to use any harsh

chemicals to clean them. Bloggers and online sites are a great resource for cleaning suggestions. More good tips are always submitted from commenters on blog posts. Turns out I only used hot water (boiling hot), baking soda and powdered laundry detergent. Here’s what to do. Lay towels down first to protect the tub’s surface. Place racks on towel. Pour hot water from the tub – as hot as possible – to cover the racks. I added several kettles of boiling

water. Sprinkle on the baking soda and powdered laundry detergent. Let it sit overnight. The next morning, one of the racks took some extra elbow grease and an old toothbrush to clean all those nooks and crannies. The tub was easy to rinse since it had two boxes of baking soda in the water. Remember not to use the self-cleaning oven feature for racks and keep birds away from the kitchen when this feature is on – the fumes are toxic to birds.
