Improve the look of Formica By Mary Beth Breckenridge Akron Beacon Journal

Q: My kitchen has white Formica countertops with black speckles. They’re getting older, but I like them and don’t want to replace them. How can I protect them and bring back the shine? A: Formica Corp. recommends Countertop Magic. It won’t return the countertops to their original luster, but it should improve the appearance and is safe for food preparation, the company says. Call 800-321-6330 to ask where it’s sold in your area. You can also order it at www.magicamerican.com. My mom swore by Jubilee kitchen wax for her Formica countertops, but it’s no longer made. However, its manufacturer, SC Johnson, recommends using Pledge Protection Plus instead and says it can be used on surfaces that come into contact with food. If you want something more protective, you might be able to apply a waterbased acrylic finish such as Minwax

Polycrylic. However, there’s no guarantee it will adhere to your Formica properly, a technical specialist for Minwax tells me. He suggests applying the product and waiting two hours; by that time, it should harden. If it’s still tacky or watery, it won’t adhere. Fortunately, you can just wipe it off at that point. Epoxy resin can also be used to recoat Formica countertops, but it will yellow over time. I also got mixed reactions when I asked manufacturers of the product about using it for that purpose. John Greer of AeroMarine Products recommends against it, because the finish won’t be as tough as the original Formica, and a thin layer can’t be applied smoothly with a brush. But Hilary Stephens of Environmental Technology Inc., which makes a resin called Envirotex Lite, says it’s an affordable way to extend a countertop’s life. If the yellowing doesn’t bother you and you want to try it, you first need to make sure the countertops are level, Stephens says. Then clean the counters with rubbing alcohol and let them dry.

Dear Helaine and Joe: This hand-colored print is titled “Rural Italian Ball,” with the notation, “Published and sold by Francois Vivares, According to Act of Parliament, November 21st, 1775.” Directly under the image is “Fran: Zuccarelli pinxit” and, on the other side, “F. Dear R.A.: This delightful picture features a couple dancing in a forest clearing or glade while a small audience watches on either side. A bucolic image, it has a great deal of pastoral charm. Francois Vivares and Francesco Bartolozzi engraved this particular piece, based on the work of the rococo artist Francesco Zuccarelli (1702-1788). The word “pinxit” next to his name on the engraving simply means that Zuccarelli painted the original image. His work was more lyrical than realistic, and his Arcadian scenes featuring picturesque peasants earned him an international reputation during his day. Contemporaries highly praised Zuccarelli’s work, and he developed a strong English market, owing to high-profile English patrons. He was so successful in that country that he became a founding member of the Royal Academy, and his work greatly influenced English landscape painting of the day. The printmakers, Vivares and Bartolozzi, were both expatriates living in London. An engraving is a print produced by carving an image into a metal or wooden plate. This is meticulous work, and these

designs tend to wear down with use. Engraving was the most popular way of reproducing art until the mid- to late-19th century when lithography and, a little later, photographic reproductions began to find an audience for mass consumption. In other words, for a long time, engraving became the method of choice for reproducing original art. But later, technology did provide a way to produce less expensive prints in greater quantities. The question today is whether R.A.’s hand-colored engraving is an original or a later reproduction. It is hard to tell for sure from the single photograph provided, but more often than not, engravings with the line “Published According to Act of Parliament” are originals because this was a form of copyright protection. Unfortunately, this print seems to have a great deal of discoloration on half of the image. The hand coloring does add value, but we think the insurance replacement for this engraving is $150 to $300.

Living Outside Outdoor rooms get outfitted from top to bottom Family Features

Outdoor rooms continue to be rated as essential by homeowners, given they are extensions of interiors and add real estate value. Yet, designing outdoor living areas comes with its share of challenges. Understanding the basics from the ground up simplifies the process. The patio is more than a hard surface. It can serve as the outdoor room’s focal point around which other materials and features are styled. The textures and shapes of stone flooring can lend a dimensional feel, while a deck’s color allows it to contrast or blend with the environment. When planning the floor, spacing is the most important component. Determining upfront if a dining area or outdoor kitchen is desired, and how many people the space will accommodate are key considerations. The patio should be planned to house these installations. Patios, along with outdoor structures, provide exterior spaces with foundational dimensions and protected placements for furniture and accessories. “Foundations delineate the room and establish

the space that belongs to the room, and that which does not,” says Sarah Kinbar, editor of Garden Design magazine, a leading outdoor design publication. “Edges and boundaries created by foundations are the outdoor’s answer to walls.” Outdoor product manufacturers offer exterior structures, furnishings, fabrics and designs to provide permanent enhancements that increase property values. Through a recent partnership, the outdoor room innovators at Walpole Woodworkers and ShadeFX Canopies unveiled versatility and quality as top priorities for outdoor spaces. As a result, the two companies launched a line of shade pergolas that combine cellular vinyl pergolas with retractable and integrated canopy systems. “As a design element, shade pergolas moderate the transition from indoors to outdoors,” explains Steve Ostrowski, president of ShadeFX Canopies. “The structure defines the space and provides a sense of privacy that makes dining tables and cushioned furniture feel more appropriate in outdoor areas.” Shade pergolas offer homeowners the ability to create sanctuaries that are covered from rain, protected from sun, impervious against wind, and immune from the stresses of daily life. Since the canopies are retractable, homeowners can switch from sun to shade at their leisure. The cellular vinyl pergolas are a low- to no-maintenance realistic wood alternative and last more than 25 years. The durable canopies offer 10 to 15 years of use. “With their height, depth and width, using shade pergolas adds dimension and substance to outdoor rooms,” says

Kristi Ritter Summer Stair

Lou Maglio, president of Walpole Woodworkers. “Outdoor structures such as these can reflect and enhance the integrity of a home’s architectural style.” When adding an outdoor structure, a homeowner should first decide where in the landscape to place it, keeping in mind views from interior windows, sunlight and proximity to the home. “Typical retractable awnings extend less than 16 feet, and a shade pergola can be used to cover a large area up to 600 squarefeet,” Ostrowski says. “A design decision is whether it should be affixed to or separate from the house.”

The remaining outdoor living area should be designed like any interior, implementing function and cohesive style. Outdoor fabrics and accessories should reveal personality while adopting juxtaposed colors, textures and lines that translate easily, as if the interior naturally extends outdoors. According to Kinbar, outdoor rooms have always existed; they are becoming more defined as new products arrive on the market that make these spaces as livable as indoor rooms. Resources help with seed success www.coloradohomes.com/Longmont

Whether you’re on a strict gardening budget or want to grow plants you cannot find at local nurseries, seed companies’ offerings are rapidly expanding. From new varieties, tropicals, natives, organic, drought-tolerant, heirloom or endangered selections and collections to entice hummingbirds, songbirds, butterflies, beneficial insects or bees, seed packets greatly expand a gardener’s horizons. Unfortunately, growing seeds to the flowering or fruiting stage is not as easy as Jack growing beanstalks. Some, such as zinnia, nasturtium, sunflower, larkspur, forget-me-not, morning glory and Chinese lantern readily sprout where they are cast if you plant them at the right time, follow their light requirements (some need light to germinate; others need darkness) and keep the seedbed moist. Others, including columbine, euphorbia, bluebonnet and perennial phlox, require special attention, such as scarifying (nicking the seed casing), stratifying (artificial chilling period) and humidity. Well-regarded seed catalogs include seed-starting tips on their websites. Some have photos or

The Taunton Press, which publishes Fine Gardening magazine, has a useful special issue titled “Starting From Seed ($7.99, www.finegardening.com). It answers questions you didn’t know you had and also showcases seed-starting products and lists some of the best annuals, perennials, herbs and vegetables to start from seed. The magazine clearly takes you through the complete process, starting with seeds you scoop out of a sun-ripened tomato you find tasty. If you are a tomato connoisseur, the magazine is worth buying for that story alone. Growing garden plants from seed requires specific techniques, carefully followed, and patience, often not a virtue in gardeners. Aside from the money saved and the vastly expanded plant palette, seeing the effort through from tiny seed to fruit or flower is one of the most rewarding aspects of gardening. – The Dallas Morning News

Country Kitchen

Overhaul Couple gets updated from ’80s to modern

Candice Olson HGTV

Deb and Greg were high-school sweethearts whose romance blossomed during summer vacations while she and her friends worked at Greg’s family’s chinchilla farm. Fast-forward 22 years: Deb and Greg are now running the family business and live with their five busy teens in the house where Greg grew up. They love that their kitchen is action central for the kids and all their friends. But they’d love it a whole lot more if their dated and worn-out kitchen was functional and easy to clean with a country-inspired look that flowed with the rest of the house. That’s where I came in – to create a contemporary and highly functional space with some of the rustic and traditional touches that Deb was hoping for. The L-shaped room was large but badly configured. With only one electrical outlet for small appliances, Deb’s work area was crammed into a dark, awkward corner next to the sink – a real shame when the big bay window in the eating area offers a view of the farm. The existing island was a dumping ground for the kids. There was a serious lack of storage. The cabinets, floors and appliances were all well past their best-before dates. So I called in my team and soon it was out with the old and in with the new ... everything. Custom cabinetry and a creamy shade set the tone for the new functional space, and the mushroom-colored quartz countertop is as durable as it is beautiful. The redesigned island with contrasting espresso cabinetry has the same hardwearing quartz countertop, but in cream. Then we tied it all together with a basket-weave-pattern marble-mosaic-tile backsplash.

Extra seating for dinner guests was high on Deb and Greg’s wish list. Seven comfy stools now surround the spacious new kitchen island. And its extra-deep sink is perfectly positioned for Deb to enjoy the view through the eating area. Deb spends a lot of time cooking and baking, so the floor needed to be comfortable and warm, yet tough to stand up to the family’s wear and tear. That meant gorgeous eco-friendly cork. Easy on the back and the dark, wide-plank format really grounds the space. Of course, with a new kitchen comes new appliances. Top-of-the-line, double-decker convection ovens, microwave, a dishwasher and the high-tech induction cooktop made perfect sense for Deb’s short-order kitchen. Induction technology cooks in a fraction of the time of conventional gas or electric, yet the elements stay cool to the touch. With five hungry teens and their friends to feed, Deb and Greg were wearing out the road to the grocery store. The 6-foot, side-by-side freezer-refrigerator combination became this kitchen’s piece de resistance. We solved the storage problem by running the cream perimeter cabinets right into the eating area. And framed the existing bay window with floorlength drapes in washable polyester with a raw silk feel, edged with pale mushroom panel; so fingerprints won’t show.

Deb and Greg’s stale, worn-out kitchen needed a fresh start. Top: After, beautiful finishes and practical design made this kitchen a warm and welcoming heart for Deb and Greg’s home. (SHNS/ HGTV)

Burnished-bronze finishes for the faucets, hardware, pendant lights and large chandelier all brought a traditional touch and casual feeling that was perfect for this family home. This stale, worn-out kitchen needed a fresh start. Beautiful finishes and practical design make it a warm and welcoming heart for Deb and Greg’s home. Now that’s divine. Only take funds from your retirement plan as a last resort

Q: I want to buy a house and I’m trying to clean up the debt I have on my credit history so my credit score will go up. Is it ever a good idea to pay down credit card debt using 401(k) money? Assume I have $20,000 in credit card debt at roughly 10 percent interest that would take about three years to pay off given current income and expense levels.

A: Taking funds from your 401(k) should be a last option, one just before turning to bankruptcy. There are many reasons not to do it, including strict payback requirements and penalties for early withdrawals from your 401(k) – and the fact that you might shortchange your financial future.

If you had taken your 401(k) cash out of the stock market in March 2009, when the market hit a low mark, you would have missed the run-up, which would have replaced some, or most, of what you had

lost. If your company allows you to borrow from a 401(k), you’ll have to be careful about being able to pay back the loan quickly if you lose your job or are fired. If you’re forced to take the loan as a distribution (because you’re unable to pay it back within the required timeframe), there are severe tax consequences, including possibly bumping up your income to a higher tax bracket (so you’ll pay even more in tax) and a 10 percent penalty if you’re under the age of 591/2. When might you pay off your loan with a 401(k)? If you’re paying 18 to 25 percent on your $20,000 in credit card debt, that’s a pretty hefty debt weight on your shoulders. Remember, with a distribution, you’ll

need to take out enough to cover the taxes and any penalties you owe. So, if you need $20,000 to pay off your credit card debt, and you’re under the age of 591/2, you may have to withdraw nearly $40,000 in order to get your $20,000. Is there anything else you can do to get this debt paid off faster? Can you cut back your budget severely? Can you get a parttime second job for a few months to begin making a dent in the debt? I’d rather see you explore all of these options before heading to your 401(k). Ilyce R. Tips for dealing with a drippy bathroom

May 15, 2010

By Karen Youso Star Tribune

Q: I get excessive moisture in my bathroom, to the point that walls and windows drip water even though I run the exhaust fan. Any suggestions? A: Be sure the fan actually exhausts to the outdoors (you should see the fan housing on the roof or wall above

the fan). It should not exhaust to the attic or other interior space. Also: • Check the fan for effectiveness. Pull apart a two-ply facial tissue and hold it up to the operating exhaust fan. If it pulls and holds the tissue to it, it’s probably effectively exhausting the bathroom. • Run the fan longer. Many people

make the mistake of running the exhaust fan only when showering or bathing. It needs to run for 15 or more minutes after you’ve showered or bathed. Noisy fans are annoying, so people often turn them off before they can finish their work. If you decide to replace your fan, get as quiet a model as possible.
