Longmont Community Foundation Improving life in the St. Vrain Valley through philanthropy and leadership in order to strengthen the community is the mission set forth by the Longmont Community Foundation. “We’re here for the community – for everybody – to improve the community,” says Eric Hozempa, executive director. As a nonprofit organization created by and for the people of Longmont and the St. Vrain Valley, the idea of the Longmont Community Foundation first came about in 1988, but wasn’t formalized until 1994. The organization is managed by a paid professional staff and governed by a volunteer board of directors. The foundation offers several ways for community members to get involved and see their concepts come to life. “People see a need and we help them address it,” Hozempa says. “We are here to connect people who care with causes that matter.” Community members can give back through Donor-Advised Funds, The Community Endowment Fund or through offering to help improve the nonprofit community through volunteering . Donor-Advised Funds are established by families and /or individuals who wish to tackle a specific issue or cause in the community. Through a donor advised fund a family and/or individual can grant funds to many nonprofit organizations, schools or places of worship. “A donor advised fund is really a great way for individuals and families to receive a tax deduction, and create a fund that will benefit many organizations and the community now and forever,” Hozempa says. Contributing to the Community Endowment Fund is an option for donors who want the Longmont Community Foundation to utilize its knowledge of the community to grant funds to the most

pressing needs in the community. The Community Endowment is not designated to a particular agency, but rather for four established areas of interest. These interests include: Arts and Culture, Civic and Education and Health and Human Services. A volunteer committee of 14 individuals reviews the grant requests to the Community Endowment. Each spring the Community Foundation distributes funds from the Community Endowment and donor advised funds to nonprofits that serve residents of Longmont and the St. Vrain Valley. The board of directors for the Longmont Community Foundation oversees the Community Endowment and periodically sets priorities for its use and distribution. The Longmont Community Foundation’s Board of Directors recently issued a challenge to the community to double the foundation’s impact. Put simply, the board

It is the organization’s intent to teach members of the community how to become part of the solution to end domestic violence by providing resources to the relationship before the violence escalates. Started in 1998, L.E.V.I. began after a series of particularly violent domestic assaults occurred in Longmont. In an effort to prevent these activities from reoccurring, the community pulled together to form L.E.V.I., which is made up of more than 24 agencies that provide resources to combat domestic violence. Kim Heard, L.E.V.I. project coordinator, says she provides three main areas of support: referrals, prevention/education and public information. First L.E.V.I. steps up to assist those who are not connecting with the resources they need to change the situation, such as helping to find funding for car repairs, changing locks, gift cards or phone numbers of other agencies. For the prevention/education part of L.E.V.I., Heard provides public presentations to healthcare providers, schools, civic groups and businesses to enlist their assistance in stopping domestic violence. Longmont Humane Society Wellness Clinic When the Longmont Humane Society opened its new facility in 2008 with an on-site Wellness Clinic for animals, little did they know how much the community would embrace the opportunity for low-cost veterinary services. While the clinic started out offering just spay and neuters, they quickly found a demand for expanded services. “The biggest passion for our program is that we can offer the community the ability to care for pets at what they deem affordable, the real outcome is that we help to reduce intakes and surrenders at the shelter,” says Pam Pierce, clinic coordinator. With the ongoing demand for animal care, the Wellness Clinic plans to move late this fall to 230 S. Main St. – near the intersection of Main Street and Ken Pratt Boulevard – to offer more space and availability in scheduling appointments. Until now, community wellness appointments have only been available two days a week because other time was spent caring for shelter dogs. The new location will be able to offer animal care five days a week. The Wellness Clinic will continue to offer spay and neutering, as well as general wellness exams, general surgery for items such as wound care, microchipping, vaccinations, heartworm testing and

Healthy Glow Spray Tanning, created in March 2009 by former educator and reformed sun-worshipper Kate Olsen, offers the safest and quickest way to tan through the most unique at-home party experience ever. Known as Healthy Glow Gatherings, these parties consist of four or more guests who join together to enjoy expertly applied, custom spray tans, and to peruse an array of exclusive, sunless tanning products in the comfort of their host’s home. The unique products offered at the gatherings aim to cover the exfoliation, bronzing and protection aspects of a sunless tanning experience. Of these, some of Olsen’s clients’ favorites are the loofah flip-flops, facial bronzers and the Original Umbrella Stand and Umbrella set. Once teaching teens, she now finds herself educating people of all ages about sunless tanning technology in a fun and pampering environment. “Being able to expose my clients to a positive spray tanning experience and educate them about sunless tanning’s safe and natural results is very rewarding,” Olsen says. And, she notes, sunless tanning is much less intimidating when done with friends. In fact, one of Healthy Glow Spray Tanning’s mottos is, “Friends who spray together, stay together!”

Choosing an orthodontist is a big decision and something that Dr. Stephanie Ross of Longmont Braces understands. Through free consultations, Ross gets to know her patients and their needs before beginning treatments of any kind. As a Longmont native, Ross knew she wanted to return to the community and begin a practice. “I like the small town feel of Longmont,” she says. “It allows me the chance to really get to know my patients and their needs.” Before opening Longmont Braces in February, Ross graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where she earned a bachelor of science in biology. Near the end of her undergraduate studies, Ross became interested in dentistry and returned home to attend the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, where she earned a degree in dentistry. Ross continued her dentistry education with a general-practice residency in Honolulu, Hawaii, where she developed specialized skills for treating complex and multi-disciplinary cases. Elite Electrology Esthetic Spa Nestled in an old home in the Historic Eastside Neighborhood, Elite Electrology Esthetic Spa warmly welcomes all clients into a quiet, comfortable and relaxing space where skin care and esthetic needs can be met. Family owned and operated in Longmont since 1991, Helen Morse Walker started the business with a passionate desire to promote health and wellness. This is reflected in the more than 30 years experience she has in the health care industry. She is a licensed and certified permanent makeup artist, licensed esthetician, licensed massage therapist and certified electrologist. Walker is also a member of the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals and licensed with Boulder County Public Heath. She was also appointed to the State Advisory Committee, DORA, on Oct. 4. Walker says permanent makeup has become a popular option for women with allergies to makeup, young people with high activity levels, and those with physical disabilities that make it difficult to apply makeup. Mountain States Children’s Home has dedicated the last 50 years to helping kids deal with the challenges in life they have endured or are going through. Onsite counselors work with each individual kid to address the problems they may have had at home, such as breaking curfew and rules, skipping school or out of control behaviors. Some kids may even face depression, bipolar disorder or ADHD, which the counseling staff can work through. Barbara Noble, director of social services at MSCH, says when a kid first arrives at MSCH, the counseling staff will address a list of criteria for placement and determine what direction will be best for them. At that point, each kid gets an individualized treatment plan with goals to work toward. Family counseling is also extremely important to the program, because eventually the family will be reunited and any issues that are within the home environment need to be addressed. “It allows us to not only deal with the child and their issues, but what the entire family is facing,” she says. “The focus of our program is behavior based on helping to change behaviors.” While counseling focuses on the child and their family, learning about problem solving and

how to work together in a group setting is also important. Group therapy allows kids to do character building, fitness or even lawn care. Through the many facets of the Mountain States program, kids come out stronger and better able to take on things in their lives because they’ve been a part of a family with consistent structure. It’s the ultimate goal of Mountain States Children’s Home.

Ace Hardware Locally owned and operated by the Gust family, Ace Hardware has been serving the Longmont community for the past 20 years. Running and working in a hardware store came naturally to Dan Gust. Although he didn’t work in the industry prior to buying Ace Hardware, he had always been a handyman of sorts and loved the idea of helping others solve and fix problems in their home. Along with his wife, Karen, who heads up the kitchen department, his daughter, Kirsten Pellicer, who acts as vice president, and their helpful staff, Ace keeps its roots local and close to home. Ace Hardware still resides in its original building, but has increased in size, now three times larger, after several expansions

and remodels. Ace Hardware prides itself on being more than just a hardware store, but a place where customers can come for answers and advice. “We look for unique items that customers might not find elsewhere, says Gust. “We want people to think of us when they need something special or unusual. The different departments at Ace vary from the traditional to the unexpected. The kitchen department carries everything from a hand-held juicer to a full line of canning supplies, not to mention great and unique gadgets and gift ideas. Ace’s paint department offers customers the chance to match specific colors, as well as find complimentary colors to complete their decor. Customers can also pick up all their other painting supplies, including brushes and rollers. The front of the store is reserved for Ace’s seasonal department. From Christmas selections to summer patio sets customers can get a wide selection of hand-picked items they might not find

When stepping into Savvy Seconds Thrift Shop, it’s immediate to the eye that this isn’t just any thrift store, but one that takes pride in the quality of products it carries and how they get displayed. Locally owned and operated, Savvy Seconds has been giving the Longmont community what it deserves – quality goods at low prices – for the past two years. “We wanted to give Longmont a new appreciation of what a thrift store can be,” says owner Gerri Fitzgerald. “It’s like a retail store that is local and about helping the community.” For Savvy Seconds owners it's important to provide clean, undamaged, high quality merchandise to customers. Selected items include clothing, furniture, home decor, jewelry and pretty much anything a person could want or need in their daily life. Savvy Seconds also offers consignment for items such as large furniture, artwork and lamps. While offering top quality selections to the community is important, Savvy Seconds also helps out by supporting two local nonprofits throughout the year. Shop Kids Resale

SP-155493

Starting a store that caters to parents and kids was easy for Shop Kids Resale and Consignment owner Megan Johnson. As a mom of three boys, Johnson understood how quickly kids outgrow clothing, toys and other must-have accessories, such as high chairs and strollers. Johnson also knew what parents in the community were looking for, after two years of hosting Shop Kids events at American Furniture Warehouse in Firestone. In order to give her customers what they wanted – year-round savings on kid items – Johnson opened Shop Kids Resale and Consignment with the goal of not only providing savings, but a shopping experience like no other. Designed more as a boutique than a thrift store, Johnson prides herself on the layout of the store because it helps busy parents find what they need, while offering a safe place for their kids to play. “Our biggest compliment is that it is open and you can see everything,” she says. “There is no digging.” Johnson also guarantees that “if it’s not quality,

The Longmont Wellness Center Mental illnesses don’t discriminate. They can affect anyone at anytime. Those living with a mental illness often die 25 years earlier than those without a mental illness from preventable or treatable causes. This is why The Mental Health Center Serving Boulder and Broomfield Counties (The MHCBBC) has spent more than two years researching best practices and outcomes for treatment and will launch a whole new way of treating mental illness in Longmont this November. The MHCBBC is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life and reduce the burden of mental illness by providing comprehensive, community-based mental health services for those with the greatest need. With offices already located on Coffman Street in Longmont, the MHCBBC will complete the transformation of their former day treatment facility at 834 S. Sherman St. to become The Longmont Wellness Center. Through this facility and the new psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) program, therapists will no longer set goals for clients, but rather meet clients where they are in their recovery to treat the whole person, and not just the symptoms of their illness. In order to save lives and reduce the 25 year disparity in life of those living with a mental illness, mental health care and physical health care will be located in the same building. The MHCBBC has formed a partnership with Salud to house physician’s assistants at The Longmont Wellness Center to serve as a portal for clients to easily access primary care. The MHCBBC will also provide extensive wellness education to clients, helping clients to maintain a healthy body, as well as a healthy mind. The tenet of recovery in mental illness is rooted in the fact that those who have been

diagnosed with a severe mental illness can, and do, get better. The MHCBBC has synthesized information from well-regarded programs across the country to incorporate PSR, cutting edge outpatient services, wellness and integrated health care delivery into a comprehensive continuum. This new model represents a full partnership with clients, creating state-of-the-art treatment programs, which they hope, will serve as the model for mental health care for the nation.
