his summer, Longmontarea youth will get the chance to experience several of the opportunities the Colorado outdoors has to offer. St. John the Baptist Catholic School will host a hiking and outdoor adventure summer camp to give kids a basic understanding of hiking, cycling and fishing. “We are trying to get kids outside and give them some ideas of things to do other than playing video games all summer,” said Mike Colley, who is the physical education teacher at the school. He will be running the camp this summer alongside his wife. The camp will run the week of June 24-28, from 9 to 11 a.m. each day. St. John’s Vice Principal Mary Wellems said registration for the camp will likely begin shortly after the school’s spring break, which begins April 8. The $50 camp will be open to any children in grades three through six. For more information, call 303-776-8760 or visit http:// johnthebaptist.org. Colley plans for campers to spend the first couple days hiking Rabbit Mountain and Hall Ranch, where he can teach them about the flora and fauna in those areas. He also plans to teach them about wilderness preparation and safety. Later in the week, they will take bike rides on Longmont greenways. He will take campers fishing on the last day of the camp. Campers will be welcome to bring

their own gear, but aside from the bicycles, everything will be provided. Colley stressed the importance of getting youngsters out of the house at a young age. “If (the campers) get out now and understand that being outdoors can be fun, it will help them throughout their lives,” Colley said. This camp was actually a long
time in the making, according to Wellems. She said she and Colley talked about it a couple of years ago, but it was not practical because of the time Colley was spending with his family. “We‘ve been trying to figure something out to get the kids outside,” Wellems said. “We’ve been hashing this out for two years now. This year we decided that it is a good time.” Colley served as a park ranger be-

fore he became a teacher at St. John’s. He hopes he can share his own passion for hiking and biking to create enthusiasm for the outdoors among the campers. “My goal is to reach out to the kids and have them enjoy the wilderness as much as I do,” Colley said. “I just want them to come away with an understanding that we live in Colorado, and it’s a beautiful state, and we have so many opportunities so close around Longmont.”
