Frontier Honda

Stonum Automotive

Frontier Honda has been a fixture of the Longmont auto dealership scene since 1987, selling new and used Hondas and servicing those in need of repair. General Manager Roger Pfau credits Frontier Honda’s many reader choice wins to a friendly service department, great products and employees who have been with the company a long time and understand customer service. There is an aging crew at Frontier Honda, Pfau jokes, because it is a great place to work and many people have been there since the early days. “We really focus on taking care of the local customers more than anything,” Pfau says, “it’s the local people that keeps us moving.”

This is one of many reader’s choice wins for Stonum Automotive, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting. “We are so thrilled to have won again,” says shop owner John Stonum who attributes his shop’s success to the “extremely qualified staff, great customer base and top notch equipment.” The priority above all else, even profit, is fixing customers’ cars and making sure they’re happy, Stonum says. Open since 2004, Stonum Automotive tries to give back to Longmont through sponsorship of local schools, fundraisers and community activities.

Ten years ago Longmont natives, Brandi Abernathy and Cindy Rillos, noticed an absence in their community; a hip yet comfortable salon that offered a total style experience. Thus, Studio Boom was born. Together with their co-owner Annie Bowlby, Brandi and Cindy continue to ensure that Studio Boom stays on trend. “Studio Boom is unique in the fact that we have a stylist for every type of client,” says Abernathy. Every stylist at Studio Boom has their own specialty and style, making it easy to find a perfect fit for your needs. Abernathy says, “I think we continue to receive this award every year because we are able to cater to such a wide variety of clientele.” ‘Cater’ is no exaggeration. Far more than just hair, Studio Boom offers extensive additional services including airbrush tanning, teeth whitening and lash extensions making them a true one-stop style shop.

BEST HANDYMAN

BEST MEDICAL/HEALTH FACILITY

(303) 995-0730, raythehandyman.com

1950 Mountain View Avenue, Longmont, luhcares.org

Ray was the 2012 Readers’ Choice for Longmont’s Best Handyman, and the award is just as well deserved in 2013. Ray has been providing his handyman services since 1999 and has the fairest prices around. He will work from your list of multiple to-dos or he’ll tackle just one. His services include laying tile, driveway crack sealing, drywall repair, replacing smoke alarm batteries, fence or gate repair, tree trimming and a wide variety of other tasks. Ray says working with his hands is something that has just always come naturally to him. “Some people are gifted to play several musical instruments or capable of speaking several languages. I can look at something and know how to build it, fix it or make it.” References, referrals and word of mouth back up Longmont’s vote that he is the best handyman in town.

Dedicated to making this community a healthier place, Longmont United Hospital strives to provide the best in healthcare. Their more than 280 highly qualified physicians, caring employees and the latest in medical tools and technology allow them to provide sophisticated services in an environment optimal to healing. Healthcare at Longmont United Hospital is more than treating a patient’s physical needs. Their philosophy is, “Health, wellness and healing require the gentle understanding of the powerful connection between a patient’s body, mind and spirit”. The little extras make all the difference, for example, they offer family dining rooms on each floor, healing massage to patients and educational opportunities to the community through a variety of programs designed to help patients and their families cope with illnesses, come up with a personal fitness program or deal with mental illness.

Connecting every sector of the community, dedicated OUR Center volunteers come from communities of faith, business and large corporations to serve people in generational poverty to the newly poor who have fallen from the middle class. “I believe this diversity of service and support makes the OUR Center so well known,” says executive director Edwina Salazar. The charity’s food bank distributed a remarkable one million pounds of food last year, serving 137,065 meals, while the homelessness prevention program significantly reduced the individual and family rate in Longmont. Building on that success, the OUR Center will expand with self-sufficiency programs for health care, financial skills and housing.

Paws 2 Groom is all about a happy environment. The three groomers – who help to create a family environment by calling themselves “aunties” – cater to special needs animals. “It’s a play date; we want everyone to enjoy coming in to see us,” Osterman said. The groomers keep detailed records of clients with a record of medical issues, and alert owners if they notice something different from the last grooming. Customers also enjoy the six-station self-wash, which provides “everything but the dog,” Osterman said.

Firestone photographer Corrie Kraft launched her photographer business eight years ago, after finding herself less than thrilled with her wedding photos. “I didn’t really know my style, and I thought ‘there’s got to be a better way to do this,’” she said. After some classes and a lot of self-teaching and practice, Kraft’s business took off. “Others describe me as telling the story of what’s happening,” Kraft said. “It doesn’t have to be anything special, just capturing the realness.” Kraft works all along the Front Range and the mountains, shooting weddings and portraits. She loves capturing families and children, but holds a real love for shooting couples, describing her wedding photography style as fresh, romantic and chic.

Open for 11 years, the Longmont Recreation Center continues to be a “high quality, top of the line building,” that “offers something for everyone,” said Ben Wagner, interim campus supervisor. With pools, a gym, a climbing wall, a workout area, a track and classes – including highly popular Zumba – Wagner said the Longmont Recreation Center strives to be available to as many people as possible. In addition, he said the staff is welcoming and care about their patrons. “Most everyone (staff) lives in the community and builds friendships and relationships with patrons,” Wagner said. “This is a lot of people’s ‘other place’ besides work and home. They have comfort coming here because of the staff.” Aquatics Supervisor Karen Charles said the Longmont Recreation Center’s aquatics program is all about “consistency and quality of staff trainings.” A majority of swim instructors have the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification, a 30-hour class, while all swim instructors attend monthly training sessions about such topics as safety and how to teach certain skills. In addition to using the American Red Cross’s Learn to Swim program, the Longmont Recreation Center aquatics staff also developed a parent/child swim program, a preschool swim program, and BLAST, an accelerated swim lesson program that focuses on the four competitive swim strokes and streamlined body position. Lessons are taught year-round at Centennial Pool and the Longmont Recreation Center, with Kanemoto and Sunset pools offering summer lessons as well to accommodate the increase in numbers over the summer.

Hover Manor Senior Living Community

Life Care Center of Longmont

2451 Pratt St., Longmont, (303) 776-5000, lcca.com/72/

At The Life Care Center of Longmont, the staff puts each person first, taking an individualized approach to that person’s needs. Open since 1979, the center now offers more than 50 occupational, physical and speech therapists, and nearly two years ago added an in-house physician, which has made a “huge difference,” according to Joleen McGee, community liaison for The Life Care Center of Longmont. The center offers acute and long-term care, as well as outpatient rehab. They focus, said McGee, on the customer service model of making the individual the most important consideration. “Our staff are very compassionate, dedicated individuals who make a daily difference in the lives of those that we care for,” she said. “It’s human life we are caring for.”

Started 34 years ago as a non-profit, Hover Manor Senior Living Community remains committed to the mission originally established by Beatrice Hover. “Our current mission is to empower seniors to live the life they choose by offering innovative, affordable and dignified choices in housing and services,” said Lisa Czolowski, CEO. One of the ways they do this, said Czolowski, is by committing to person-centered care based on the Eden movement, which brings a culture of change into senior residences. Care is based on the preference and rhythm of the residents, established when they enter Hover Manor. They also offer the Hover at Home program, a service that focuses on affordable, in-home support services such as handyman, transportation, and other non-nursing care. Hover Manor’s success is a direct result of its people, said Czolowski, from the staff in whom she sees “daily examples of going above and beyond,” as well as an “abundance of love and respect,” to the volunteer board who “give a lot of time to support the staff and make sure we have the training and tools to be successful.”

516 Main St. Longmont Sunflower Spa opened in November 2005 as a full-service spa, offering skin care, body treatments, nail care and waxing. “We’re not a destination spa, but a community day spa,” said owner Patrice vonMetzger. To this end, vonMetzger and her staff strive to remember people and to build repeat business. “We try to remember details about people,” she said. In an industry that is notorious for high turnover, according to vonMetzger, many of her staff has been with Sunflower Spa “a long time;” a third of the staff has been there for more than five years. “A majority of the people who work at Sunflower Spa work hard, but are really happy with what they do,” she said.

Owners Mike and Nania Shea started Mike O’Shays 32 years ago. A big reason why the restaurant still draws crowds of enthusiastic patrons is Mike’s dedication to making people happy. “Mike is as hands-on in his 32nd year as he was in his first year,” said O’Shays manager Todd Johnson. Patrons like O’Shays rotating menu filled with classic American fare, Mexican delights, seafood, gluten-free protein plates, as well as forays into new culinary trends. And Mike makes sure everything tastes good. “He tastes things every day, three times a day,” Johnson said. Long known for its rotating menu of desserts - try the cheesecake, if you haven’t before O’Shays maintains a call list for customers to alert them when certain sweets take their turn coming from the kitchen. “When we have a dessert they like, we call people,” Johnson said. That’s exactly the kind of dedicated service that makes the fixture on Main Street a fixture among local eateries. With such a wonderful array of food and premium drinks, delivered by excellent and friendly staff, it really is no surprise that Mike O’Shays continues to be voted the best of in so many ways.

In less than two years, the Wing Shack has made its mark on the taste buds of locals in search of the perfect hot wing. Owned and operated by three generations - Bob Blume, son Mike Blume, and grandson Jacob Vickers - the Wing Shack serves up mouth-watering menu of appetizers, to begin with. “People like the appetizers so much because they are hand made,” said Debbie Blume, office manager at Wing Shack. That includes unique morsels like hand-breaded fried pickles, or fried mac-n-cheese, not to mention standards like homemade and hand-breaded onion rings and homemade chips. But it’s the 14 kinds of sauces that keep customers coming back for the restaurant’s namesake. From traditional to exotic, the Wing Shack coats its crispy wings in tempting flavors. And customers’ suggestions are always welcome. In fact, they often make their way onto the menu. “About every month we introduce a new sauce that people have suggested,” Blume said.

Since 2012, Einstein Bros. Bagels has been rating its dozens of stores located across the nation through customer surveys. This past March, the Longmont Einstein’s earned a top award for its customer service. Add that to the fact the bagel shop focuses on one thing - making good bagels for breakfast and lunch - and it’s no wonder the store on Clover Basin Drive earned this year’s Reader’s Choice Award. “It’s a simple operation,” said store manager John Shannon. “Our bagels are always cooked fresh and consistently and our cream cheese is far better than anything you’ll find in a store.”

It focuses on fresh ingredients. It uses local food sources. And when you walk in the door, it feels like you’re at a friend’s house for dinner and drinks. Those are the key ingredients that make Harold’s Restaurant and The Bayonet Room such a great eatery and bar. In just its first year, Harold’s, owned by James Unger and Susan Pratt, has already earned a reputation as a hotspot in local lounging and dining. That’s due to the jovial, friendly vibe and to the eatery’s emphasis on local goods. Even the bar fare in The Bayonet Room is hand crafted and locally sourced. “It’s a 1940s-themed craft-cocktail lounge,” said general manager Noah Heaney. “We focus on local, unique spirits, a very eclectic wine list and local beers. And all of our bar juices are made fresh daily.” On the restaurant side, Harold’s has developed relationships with local farmers and producers to stock its made-from-scratch kitchen each day. “We work in a symbiotic relationship with the community to grow the community as well as the restaurant,” Heaney said.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries

Matt Alexander and Nick Reckinger, both Georgia natives, started Georgia boys BBQ a few years back and the Longmont Q crowd quickly lined up to chow down on the pair’s authentic brand of pork, chicken, hot links and brisket. Everything the boys serve is made from scratch, and with care. “Georgia style is a dry rub meat left to sit in its rub for at least 24 hours and then smoked for as long as it takes,” Reckinger said. Try the hard-to-find-elsewhere Brunswick stew, or stomach-pleasing gumbo (made by chef and Louisiana native Tim Armour) as a starter to your barbecue next time you visit.

BEST BREAKFAST/BRUNCH

Lucille’s Creole Cafe 518 Kimbark St., Longmont, (303) 774-9814, luciles.com

Dinner can be an event, lunch can be on the go, but breakfast is a ritual. For years, people have been making a stop at Lucille’s Creole Café a morning ritual for breakfast or brunch. “It’s breakfast all day every day,” said manager Marshall Gephart. “People count on us come rain or shine.” They count on Southern Louisiana-style comfort food like beignets or biscuits with chicory coffee, Calas pancakes, rice pudding porridge and eggs Pontchartrain. And Lucille’s setting, a well-kept house on Kimbark Street, makes it feel like you’re right at home during your morning meal. Only the food is better.

With more than 250,000 topping combinations, Five Guys Burgers and Fries has a fully customizable menu of veggies, condiments and sauces customers can add to their sandwiches. The Five Guys store in Longmont provides enthusiastic service alongside the tasty options everyone can enjoy. “It’s the type of burger you’d make at home if you were trying to impress your friends,” said Molly Catalano, director of communications at Five Guys. “We use fresh, quality ingredients without being super-fancy.” Whether you’re in the mood for a hamburger or cheeseburger, with or without bacon and two patties or just one, customers can mix and match toppings until they find a favorite. “Once people get the right topping combination,” Molly said, “they have ‘their’ burger.”

Pete’s Place/Papa Frank’s in Frederick prides itself on serving the best in home-style cooking. Daily specials spotlight the restaurant’s wide variety of homemade dishes, from all-you-can-eat spaghetti to specially priced ribeye and prime rib. “Everything is homemade,” said Tom Rizzi, chief cook and bottle washer at Pete’s Place. “It’s all done in-house: sauce, sausage, meatballs, we cut the steaks – everything.” The positive reputation of Pete’s Place/Papa Frank’s has spread outside of Frederick; Tom said people come from south Denver, Cheyenne, Aspen and other far-off locations for the homemade food. “They think it’s worth the trip,” Tom said. “If they want a good meal, they come here.”

With breakfast, lunch and dinner options, customers can find a taste of Mexico that is “authentic, affordable and always fresh,” said Craig Morales, co-owner of Santiago’s with his wife Annette. “We believe we only have one chance to impress a customer,” Craig said. One consistent customer-pleaser is Santiago’s selection of burritos. Breakfast burritos come filled with a different meat each weekday, with a chef’s choice on Saturday. For later in the day, Craig said popular deluxe burritos like the beef and bean, and steak are “good for afternoon or nighttime.” Though the burritos can be served plain with a choice of bean, cheese and a variety of meats, Craig said customers often return for Santiago’s green chile. Available in hot, mild or half-and-half, the green chile can be served inside or smothered on top of all burritos. The deluxe choice takes the smothered option and adds lettuce, cheese and tomato on top.

True to its name, Martini’s Bistro offers a custom menu of cocktails perfect for any palate. “Customers have control over their martinis,” said owner Frank Kaven. “People like the fact that we serve martinis in a shaker, and change the menu frequently based on taste and season.” With more than two dozen varieties of the eponymous cocktail, it’s hard to pick a standout. However, Frank identified the specialty martini Cirque Du Ciroc as a burgeoning favorite. Made with Ciroc red berry vodka, Cointreau, Grand Marnier, Leopold Bros. Blackberry Liqueur and an orange twist, Frank said the Cirque Du Ciroc is only growing in popularity. With summer upon us, now is the perfect time to enjoy a drink outdoors. Seating 90 people and nestled in a quiet, residential setting, Frank said the patio (including a lounge area with sofa seating) is a relaxing spot for lunch, dinner or happy hour. “You’re not sitting on the street or in an alleyway,” Frank said. “Our patio is like your own backyard.”

Loaf & Ladle

Nicolo’s Chicago Style Pizza

At Loaf & Ladle, they take customer service seriously. “We treat everyone like guests in our home,” says Lance Thorne, owner with his wife Jackie. This Longmont fixture has been open for 25 years and has been in Thorne’s family for much of that time. “We have put in some of our mom’s and grandmom’s recipes – like gumbo (we’re from New Orleans), roast beef po’ boys, and Cajun seafood. I think we’re liked because everything is homemade, just as you would at your house. We start our pies from scratch every day. I make soups for the next day; my great grandma was Cajun French and said you had to do that.” Lunch favorites are Reubens, shrimp po’ boys, all kinds of sandwiches. They are open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, serving soups, sandwiches, salads and homemade pies, and don’t forget to have a soda from their soda fountain.

How do you make prize-winning pizza in this pizza-loving city? At Nicolo’s they put the toppings under the cheese. Picture pizza crust, topped by sauce, then toppings, then cheese. Owners Jeanne and Kent Blythe have been in business for almost a decade. “We want to thank our customers; without them we wouldn’t be here. We’re a neighborhood place. We have a lot of regulars as well as new people. What’s special that we do is that we use a lot of fresh dough throughout the day, grate our cheese here so it doesn’t dry out, make sauces and salads fresh every day, and serve fresh-baked desserts. We serve beer and wine, too.” The owners or family members are there every day “to make sure everything is done right. We have a wonderful staff. Our core staff has been with us a long time – some from the beginning. They are part of the extended family.”

Snarf’s Sub Shop

645 Ken Pratt Blvd., Longmont, (303) 774-1441, www.eatsnarfs.com

A few key factors make Snarf’s a popular eatery. “Maybe it’s because the atmosphere is great, or because of ingredients like our bread, which is baked at Blue Point Bakery in Denver and delivered to us every morning,” says Assistant Manager Miguel Maus. “We are trying a new gluten-free bread. We’ve gotten great feedback from customers who tried it. We’re glad to accommodate people.” Every month Snarf’s features a different specialty sandwich, like buffalo chicken, pot roast, or Cubano slow-roasted pulled pork and ham. “We always feature great sides. We have 12 flavors of ice cream, milk shakes, floats, ice-cream cookie sandwiches made with the cookies we bake every morning.” There is another, more subtle ingredient: a Colorado attitude. Snarf’s is uniquely run. Snarf’s was born in Colorado, and they have lot of regulars come in. It’s upbeat. Even standing in line is okay because the smells are so good. There’s the anticipation of knowing you’re going to get an awesome sandwich.

Thank You for voting us #1 BEST CARBON VALLEY RESTAURANT! Since 1908

The Longmont Theatre Company was born out of a need for a creative way to raise funds for Longmont United Hospital, in 1957. After the fundraising committee realized the amount of work necessary to uphold a theatre company, they went their separate ways, but the performer’s passion lived on under the name of the Potpourri Players throughout the 1960’s. The company eventually purchased and renovated the Trojan Theatre, which is where they currently reside. The upcoming show, “A Little Night Music” begins May 17 and runs through the end of May. Main stage tickets cost $15 to $17 and can be purchased on the Longmont Theatre Company website or by calling the box office.

City Star Brewing: integrating taste and a love for their community one pint at a time. Combining their passion for delicious craft beer and entrepreneurial talents, co-owners John Way and Whitney Taylor opened City Star Brewing in early May 2012. A taproom centric brewery, City Star houses a modest 3.5-gallon brew system. Much of what is produced is sold directly in the tasting room. City Star Brewery is a standout. From its barrel tables, colorful walls, concrete bar, wood reclaimed from the building, chalkboards made from old windows reclaimed from the building, exposed original ceiling, historical photos of Berthoud, to the 10-foot barrel chandelier crafted entirely by Way, it’s an original work of art. “We believe investing in the brewery, taproom and employees are keys to a long term sustainable and successful business,” Taylor says. City Star is open seven days a week and will be revealing construction of a new merchandise area and introducing a new “mug club” program.

“Mary’s Market & Deli has the best Gluten Free pastries and granola I have found anywhere,” touts one happy reviewer. Mary has been gluten intolerant all of her life, and has converted her baked goods and family dinners to be gluten free also, without compromising taste. Family style lasagnas, pot pies of different varieties, foccacia, pies, muffins, cookies, quiche, exotic wild game sausages, and Chicken Cordon Bleu are all items on the menu. Their buffalo pot pie is easily the best pot pie this writer has ever sampled, and there was no compromising on taste. The pie crust practically melts in the mouth. The Rib House

1920 South Coffman St., Longmont, (303) 485-6988, theribhouse.com

The Rib House in Prospect is famous for - you guessed it - ribs. Tracy’s Famous Illegal Babyback Ribs are named for Tracy Webb who co-owns the restaurant with his wife Merry Ann. As the first business in Prospect, opening in 2001, The Rib House drew people to the area and helped build the Prospect business community, Webb says. There are a lot of good people and businesses in Prospect and they help each other out, he says. The Rib House encourages customers to check out the other establishments in the neighborhood. “We want everyone to succeed.”

Ares Thrift Shop

818 Coffman St., Longmont, (303) 532-3344 , aresthriftshop.com

Open since 1991, Ares Thrift Shop gives vouchers to many organizations in Boulder County including substance abuse programs and the Boulder County Safehouse to provide free clothes and goods to those in need. Paying customers purchase clothes, books and housewares at a low, secondhand price that keeps the place running and the staff paid, making it possible to give away items for free to those who need it, says Jim Rodgers, co-owner with wife Josie Rodgers. Ares has recycled four million items through Boulder County, he says. A consistent clothes sizing system makes browsing and purchasing convenient, and a constant rotation of stock keeps customers returning.
