ndependence, safety, compassion, empathy. These are the hallmarks behind every decision staff at The Vista makes. And they keep them at the forefront of their mind, as our parents or grandparents are able to age in place at Vancouver Island’s premiere retirement community. Currently under construction and scheduled for completion in August 2022, The Vista is an

11-storey building encompassing the perfect fusion of design, style, comfort and liveability. “Our communities are often compared to a cruise ship on land, where everything that you need is provided,” says Wayne Melvin, general manager for The Vista. “That’s what is most appealing about us, so that when people move in, they’re not worried about home maintenance, housekeeping,

The level of assistance staff provides across those different types of residences will vary and cater individually to the resident and their family’s needs: 24/7 monitoring of emergency response devices will be provided to alert an attendant should the need arise. Given the unprecedented heat dome that shrouded the south coast in the summer of 2021, residents can be assured of comfort knowing that each suite comes with its own individually controlled air conditioning unit. “For many residents, they just

require some assistance in the morning – maybe it’s getting laundry done, assistance with their medications or just getting ready for the day,” Melvin says. “For a lot of seniors, if they are getting that little bit of extra help, it allows them to maintain their independence much longer and they have the energy to enjoy all of the programs and amenities The Vista has to offer.” Perhaps the single-biggest advantage The Vista offers is flexibility. No matter where residents find themselves in life – whether it be their age, health or social interests – The Vista provides a wonderful balance. “When people make that decision to move, they only want to move once,” Melvin says. “Our goal is to get people to move when they want to move, not because they have to move. we want them to understand that those services that they may need as they age can be provided where they are.” Those services will include transportation provided for community outings to shopping centres, community centres or local events. As an added level of convenience, The Vista is located directly on a major bus route. The staffing cohort will include professionals across a myriad of disciplines to ensure a maximum level of comfort and care: licensed practical nurses and registered care aides, specialized lifestyle activity aides, dietary staff, Red Seal chefs and environmental staff. “We are extremely fortunate to have the staff we do, because this is a very specialized type of service. It is not the type of work that just anybody can do,” Melvin says. “The characteristics of compassion and empathy displayed by our staff are humbling to observe. You must be a sympathetic listener and understand the needs of the resident you’re dealing with, so the care and service provided is respectful and appropriate to their circumstances.” Melvin adds that COVID-19 policies, both now and the future, will always be followed, as resident and staff safety are always of paramount importance. The Vista will also closely monitor new trends around hygiene practices, environmental sanitation, and technology. “We’ve learned a lot over the last two years around how to maintain services in restricted environments, using enhanced environmental monitoring and doing what is needed to protect our residents and staff,” Melvin says. The Vista comes with more than a generation’s worth of experience and understanding that will maximize a resident’s quality of life and enjoyment in a setting uniquely suited to life on the West Coast. “We are a Victoria-based family owned and operated company,” Melvin says. “and our desire is to become a pillar of the community for many years to come.” For more information, visit liveatVista.ca. or call 250-8854481 at our Sales Centre to arrange a personal tour.

Why didn’t I make this move years ago?

I

By Andrew Trinder, Director of Operations, VRS Communities Seniors Living, Ross place (Victoria) and Lakeside Gardens (Nanaimo)

n my previous life, which now feels like ages ago, I operated high end hotels, clubs, and resorts. I was happy. I thoroughly enjoyed my career, which began in London, moved to (obscure) Andorra, and then followed the high life in Bermuda – where I stayed for more years than I should have, surrounded by turquoise waters, wealth, and fame (others, not me!). Eventually, I escaped and moved to Victoria in 2007 to run the

now recognize they all face similar questions: “do I want to change my lifestyle?, do I want to live in a Aerie Resort and Spa. While there, community?, will I like the other I was hired by VRS communities people living there?, do I want to operate Ross Place Seniors someone else to cook my meals Community; honestly, I did not know if it would be a good fit for me, and will it be to my taste?, will I be interested in attending all these but decided to give it a try. activities they offer and are telling From the moment I walked me about?”. through the door, I loved it. I was surrounded by wonderful people and felt an innate sense of worth. Right then, I knew I would never go back to operating hotels. With this sense of having fi nally found a place that felt like home, I asked myself the question: “why didn’t I make this move years ago?”. Having now welcomed and gotten to know thousands of seniors who have chosen to move from their home into a retirement community, whether that be in Independent or Assisted Living, I

My best advice and answer to all these questions is this – we never know what life has to offer if we stay within our comfort zone. Stepping out into something new, whether it’s a new career or residence, can bring an even better future than you imagined. You just have to give it a try. After 10 years of working at

VRS seniors communities, what I hear from so many of our residents is the same response I had when I decided to take the leap: “why didn’t I make this move years ago?”. For more information about Ross Place visit RossPlace. ca or for more information on Lakeside Gardens visit Lakeside-Gardens.com

eniors are understandably nervous about having to take a driving road test. That’s why we are the best for your retest! Most seniors do not properly prepare for the test preamble. They have been driving for longer than most examiners have been alive. So why is it that they have such a difficult time with the road test? The answer is simple. It is not a road test, but rather a checking test. Before going on the road test, a standard vision test is administered, and after that an explanation and reminder session about traffic signs is done. The examiner knows that seniors, for the most part, are experienced drivers. The examiners are there to see if seniors are doing the proper safety checks. But first, the parking

lot vehicle check list must be completed. Here is where things can go terribly wrong. Before the road work begins, all safety controls on the car are examined. This includes the lights, low and high beam, signal, and brake lights, along with the horn, licence plate Prepare for your Road Test insurance decal. Before leaving for the road, the senior will show the hand signals. It is advisable to know the controls for temperature, defrost, AC, and wipers. While on the road there will be skills assessed while turning left or right, at stop signs, lights, and uncontrolled intersections. Playground and school zones, and various speed zones will be encountered along with the surprise construction zones. Turning around with a 3-point, 2

point or a U Turn will be carried out. Parallel parking fortunately is not included. Included in the test, the senior will be given several instructions to follow and execute. This is one of the cognitive tests to test short term memory, while asking to change the interior temperature, turn on the wipers or toot the horn. There will be a short break and another round of multiple instructions to follow and return the reverse route just completed. Updating driving skills is essential for success, attending one of our free webinars is recommended. Call to participate, offered on the 4th Wednesday of every month. schedule@wallacedrivingschool.com

As we all are learning to live with COVID-19 and keep ourselves well in body and spirit, we need to find ways to reconnect to people and activities that provide a sense of well-being. Being isolated has serious negative impacts on our health. Music is one activity that may be of interest to you. Whether it is listening to or making music yourself, music can be soothing, put you in a relaxed state of mind and bring positive memories from your past back. At the Victoria Centre of Silver Threads Service, the Strength from Within Song Circle group meets Mondays at 1:00pm for a joyful hour of singing with musician Patrick Smith and his trusty guitar. The group sings and listens to swing songs from the 20’s through the 50’s, pop songs from the 50’s to the present, and folk songs from many cultures. Songs by familiar artists such as The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, John Denver, and The Everly Brothers are played. Song sheets, tea and coffee are provided and there is no pressure to perform, we gather for the joy of singing together. The next date is May 9th. How Sunlight Can Improve Your Sleep

ll animals, plants and microbes have some sort of circadian rhythm - an internal “body clock” that is synced to a 24 hour cycle. Our circadian rhythms adjust to the natural daily pattern of sunlight: waking us as the sun rises, and preparing us for sleep when the sun goes down. If you’ve ever worked an overnight shift or traveled to a different time zone you know the awful experience of your circadian rhythm not matching your environment.

So how does our internal clock know what time it is? Specific cells in our eye get activated by bright light and send a signal to our brain to coordinate our circadian rhythm. The part of the brain responsible for this process is called the suprachiasmatic nucleus. In our modern lives our circadian rhythms get confused figuring out when it’s morning and we should be awake, and when it’s nighttime and we should be preparing for sleep. We don’t get enough bright light in the morning,

yet flood our eyes with overhead lights and bright screens in the evenings. We can improve the accuracy of our internal clock and therefore improve our sleep by tidying up the signals we send to our brain. In the morning, get at least 10 minutes of natural sunlight, outdoors, within 30 minutes of waking. Why do you have to go outside? The brightness of natural sunlight is 32,000 to 100,000 lux, while artificial lighting is only 300 lux. Natural sunlight is over 100

Worried about the safety of living at home alone, but not ready for long-term care or full home-care?

times brighter than artificial light! And while our eyes cannot pick up on this difference visually, the cells in our eyes responsible for syncing our circadian rhythms absolutely can. By getting natural sunlight in the morning we send a very clear signal to our brain: “It’s morning! Wake up!” And this sets in process a 24 hour cycle that makes it easier to fall asleep at night. To tidy up the messages we’re sending to our suprachiasmatic nucleus in the evening, avoid overhead lighting and other bright lights. When under overhead

lighting, our brain receives the signal “It must be midday - the sun is directly above us.” Table lamps, candles, and moonlight are all acceptable sources of light and are much more cozy, psychologically getting you relaxed and ready for sleep as well. Try going for a short walk each morning this week and not using overhead lights at home after sunset. Scientific research has shown that these two things can improve your sleep…and who wouldn’t love an excuse to buy a few more candles?

Elevated Culinary Experiences at Tapestry

T

apestry at Victoria Harbour is a unique seniors’ community for so many reasons: a dedicated focus on wellness recently acknowledged as number one in North America, exceptional amenities and programs, and services delivered by dedicated employees who make even simple pleasures feel luxurious and indulgent. One of Tapestry’s most inspired offerings is its extraordinary approach to creating an exceptional full-service culinary experience in the elegant restaurant and the casual pub. This progressive approach begins with the Executive Chef who creates menus in collaboration with local partners to source ingredients that are fresh, seasonal and sustainably produced. The new spring menu, for example, features salmon sourced from Kuterra, near Port McNeill, and locally sourced meats from a family-owned butcher with a 70-year history on Vancouver Island. Once menus are created, Tapestry’s registered dietician ensures that meals are delicious and nutritionally well-balanced. Especially unique to Tapestry is a commitment to the highest service, where chefs not only prepare each meal, but also serve residents and their guests. “Removing a server, who is

the intermediary, offers so many advantages,” says Mark Andrew, Senior Vice President, Tapestry. “The residents benefit from our chefs’ knowledge and their intimacy with how each menu item was prepared, right down to the last ingredient. As well, our chefs appreciate the opportunity to develop familiarity with each resident’s preferences and receive direct feedback to inspire future menus.” With cooking and nutrition classes integrated within the daily calendar of events and activities, residents are inspired to create their own culinary creations in the comfort of their own contemporary full kitchens. Tapestry’s sophisticated homes are as comfortable as they are stylish, striking a perfect balance between tranquility, independence and access to the many activities in this vibrant active aging community. Experience the Tapestry difference for yourself. Join them for a personalized tour of the display homes and enjoy a complimentary lunch. With Tapestry currently offering significant incentives whether you choose to own or rent, the time has never been better to explore Tapestry at Victoria Harbour by Concert.
