Living with grief Adjusting to Life after Loss

T

he death of someone close to you can be a life-transforming event, affecting all aspects of yourself and your life. It may feel as if your world has been shattered. The grief you feel when someone important to you dies is a part of the love you felt for that person and your meaningful connection with each other. Grief is a normal part of life and a natural response to loss. While grief is a universal experience, there are often individual differences in the ways that people grieve. As you are learning to live with your grief, you may find that your feelings and responses vary and fluctuate. This is normal. In fact, the question “is my grief normal?” is often asked by people who are seeking grief support. The bereavement counselling team at Victoria Hospice recognize that while grief is unique to your relationship with the person who died, there are some common themes. To help you understand the responses you experience on your grief journey, Victoria Hospice has developed a variety of resources. Victoria Hospice is pleased to host several workshops on “Living with Grief: Adjusting to Life after Loss.” The first opportunity to attend this

free workshop is on Thursday February 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at our Community Support Centre, 1024450 Chatterton Way. Subsequent workshops will take place in April and June. The workshop will: • Explore the many ways that grief can impact our lives. • Describe how grief naturally works to help us live with our losses. • Learn about the differences between grief and mourning. • Identify ways to support healthy adjustment to loss. There will be a demonstration, discussion, and a take-home grief worksheet and written information. Learn about the resources available through Victoria Hospice to support you and those you care about with the grief process. Victoria Hospice offers professional bereavement counselling and support groups that are open to everyone; no prior connection to Victoria Hospice is required. Most of these services are free thanks to our generous donors. To learn more about Victoria Hospice Bereavement Services and register for this free workshop, call 250-519-3040 or visit www.victoriahospice.org.

C

onsidered by many to be the final frontier, Canada’s Yukon and Northwest Territories remain an unchecked item on many a traveller’s bucket list. Far more than a frozen wasteland, Canada’s North is absolutely brimming with life. Long days of sunlight in the summer and unbelievably breathtaking sights as far as the eye can see await you in this beautiful untouched wilderness. It’s a region where Canadian heritage is accentuated, with breathtaking flora, abundant fauna and a culture formed by the union of Indigenous Peoples and European settlement. Each summer, local tour operator Mile Zero Tours operates fully guided tours to the Yukon and Northwest Territories. On the 12-day tour, travellers experience Northern culture firsthand. Highlights include trying your luck at gold panning in the Klondike, taking in a show at the famed Diamond Tooth Gerties, riding back in time on the White Pass and Yukon railway, traveling the Top of the World Highway and soaking up the midnight sun. Stunning landscapes with breathtaking vistas can be seen across the North on trips to Tombstone and

Kluane park. But perhaps the most memorable part of this journey is hearing the heart of the locals through enthralling tales and legends of this magical land where the compass leads rather than the clock. While all this would certainly make for a once-in-alifetime excursion, the true highlight of this journey is venturing well beyond the Arctic Circle to the shores of the Arctic Ocean over the majestic expanses of tundra by airplane to the far northern community of Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Explore the vast Mackenzie River Delta on a boat trip with local guides. Then travel the new Arctic Highway to the secluded seaside community of Tuktoyaktuk, nestled on the edge of the Arctic Ocean. Learn about northern life both now and in days gone by, taste traditional arctic fare and dip your toe in the waters of the Arctic ocean. For many, travelling to remote destinations like Canada’s North may seem like an unreachable destination. But on a guided tour with Mile Zero Tours, your dream becomes a reality. The tour operator makes travel at any age a possibility for residents of Vancouver Island and offers home pickup and return

If the shoe fits, wear it

Y

OUR FEET ARE IMPORTANT. The employees at Walk in Comfort Shoes think that feet are one of the most important parts of your body and they want them to be healthy and perfect in every way — and stay that way. They make sure your shoes fit right. For instance, the ball of your foot should fit comfortably into the widest part of the shoe. They say you shouldn’t buy shoes that feel too tight and expect them to stretch to fit. Your heel should fit comfortably in the shoe with a minimum amount of slipping — the shoes should not

Walk in Comfort

The name says it all ride up and down on your heel when you walk. Wearing badly fitted footwear can present a slew of issues such as ingrown toenails, bunions, plantar fasciitis and circulatory problems. For most people, wearing dress shoes can be a toss-up between pinched toes and aching feet. Buy shoes that fit. You might get a bit of stretch in the width of the shoe — but

there is no way a shoe can stretch in length. Don’t plan on your shoes stretching over time, buy what fits well and feels good. The experienced staff at Walk in Comfort are dedicated to providing comfort, quality, style, and outstanding customer service. Employees at Walk in Comfort differentiate themselves by declaring “we like to measure and fit” and they aspire to measure and fit every foot that comes in the door. Their name says it all. hen Yun Performing Arts’ 2020 international tour is in full swing, with its much-anticipated run at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre taking place from March 13-22. That’s just a few weeks away and tickets are selling fast, as Shen Yun has grown hugely in popularity and acclaim and is now a global sensation. It’s a show that transcends all cultures and nationalities. Six of Vancouver’s ten scheduled shows are matinee performances, with two on weekdays-Tuesday and Thursday-which is good news for seniors because they can get the ferry discount. Return shuttle service is available from the Tsawwassen and Horseshoe Bay ferry terminals for all six matinee shows. New York-based Shen Yun has seven touring companies-each with its own live orchestra. During the 2020 season, the group will play in more than 100 cities across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. For 5,000 years, divine culture flourished in the land of China. This treasure was nearly lost in the 20th century, but Shen Yun is reviving the Middle Kingdom’s rich culture through live orchestral music and dance. Each show presents a landscape of legendary characters from the Middle Kingdom’s long and storied history, lively drumming acts, grand-scale dances, vocal soloists, a full orchestra with a mix of Chinese and western instruments, and unique animated backdrops. The story-telling is done through classical

Chinese dance, an ancient art form that enables Shen Yun to depict the myths, legends, characters, and heroes from ancient China so well. The handmade costumes worn by the performers span China’s regions, dynasties, and ethnicities, and are inspired by authentic couture. The easily understandable language of music and dance is enhanced by two bilingual emcees who introduce each piece and provide some background information. According to reviews on Shen Yun’s website, audience members often remark on the show’s positive energy and say they felt uplifted or inspired after seeing it. Here is a selection of comments: “A story of courage. A story of appreciating history. I’m deeply inspired and profoundly moved.” — Rita Cosby, CBS Television Anchor “It’s a performance that truly nourishes and lifts the spirit.” — Stephen L. Norris, Co-founder of The Carlyle Group “There is a massive power in this that can embrace the world. It brings great hope… It is truly a touch of heaven.” — Daniel Herman, former Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic “Exciting to watch and really inspirational!” — Stewart F. Lane, six-time Tony Award-winning producer It’s a captivating experience not to be missed. Let Shen Yun take you on an extraordinary journey through 5,000 years of one of the world’s most profound civilizations!

Activities with your teenage grandchild

I

n an age of bigger, better and faster technology, leaving less room for person to person contact, what can we do to increase our bonds with our teenage grandchildren? Physical activity may not come to mind, but activity doesn’t have to be about the exercise. It can be about experience, interaction and making a difference in someone else’s life. Over the past year, a teenage boy with a smaller frame than the majority of his friends, was becoming less confident, less willing to try new things or engage with peers. This same young man, who is looking to find his place in this world, would light up when he spent time with older adults. He became animated, sharing what he learned at school and when adults shared their knowledge and life experiences with him. Without the peer pressure of “being cool”, older adults can offer a safe space for teens to be themselves. This young man’s aunt lives less than a 10-minute drive away from him. When she

What do I do now? preparing for the task of settling an estate

By: Laura Van Sprang, Manager at Sands Funeral Chapel Cremation andReception Centre (Victoria)

W

hen a “first call” comes into the funeral home and there has been a death in the family, we are usually faced with one of these following statements:

‘We have made pre-arrangements and have things in place to move forward’, or ‘We have been through this before and have a pretty good idea of what to expect’, or ‘We have never done this before… What do I do now?’ In any of these cases, we are standing by ready to assist and guide the family through the next steps.

I’d like to share some information that may help you feel a little more prepared if you should be faced with assisting in a loved one’s final arrangements or thinking about organizing your own in advance. First detail some are not aware of is that Power of Attorney ends at death. The Executor of the Will would then have the authority to move forward with making arrangements. If there is no Will, we look to the Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Act/ Control of Disposition, which lists, in order, who is legally allowed to then handle all arrangements for the disposition and funeral. The Executor or authorised Next of Kin, will need to contact a funeral home to assist you. A funeral arrangement can sometimes

take a few hours depending on the services chosen and details to be discussed. An appointment should be made before heading to the funeral home, to ensure the time is set aside to answer all your questions and that your wishes can be discussed. We will be there to guide you through and always take into consideration that grief is present and needs extra patience, comfort and care. The death certificates can be issued once the doctor has signed the medical certificate of death and the vital statistics have been obtained at the arrangement. We work under the Privacy Act so all information given is protected. The family can order as many death certificates as they need at $27 per certificate, which will be paid to Vital Statistics Office. Your funeral director will work with you and your family to create a meaningful service that will also fit into your budget. Rest assured there will be educated, compassionate professionals there to guide you, from that difficult “first call”, all the way through the arrangements and services and also set you up with valuable information and resources to prepare you for the task of settling an estate. Safe Step Tubs

Choosing a professional company vs. buying a tub from a store

T

he digital world has taken over, especially when it comes to shopping, even if you’re looking to invest in a walk-in tub for yourself or a loved one. Walk-in tubs provide a wide variety of benefits for seniors and choosing the right one will result in maximum benefits. We wanted to discuss the importance of buying a walk-in tub from a professional company versus a reseller. Professional Company:

The difference a specialized and professional company can make is gamechanging. A company that specializes in a specific product will be your one-stop shop. From advice to installation to servicing the tubs, they are the experts you can count on. These experts will also provide in-depth knowledge and tips on how to take care of a walk-in tub. They know exactly how it was made, how to use the tub to take advantage of all of its benefits, and most importantly, how to choose the best walk-in tub for your needs. Compared to just a reseller, the team at Safe Step Tubs is always available to answer your questions, along with providing you with the knowledge you need to use your tub effectively. What else makes Safe Step Tubs unique?

They are manufactured in North America. From the design to the construction, it’s all done in North America. We are experts in walk-in tubs providing seniors with comfort and independence, allowing them to bathe and relax. As a company that specializes in walk-in tubs, we understand this is an investment,

which is why we offer different financing options & discounts, along with free consultations and professional installations. Rest assured that you will not only get excellent customer service but a walk-in tub that will last you a lifetime. Purchasing from a store:

Although it can be convenient to walk into a store, it’s not always beneficial, especially if you are wanting to get in-depth information about walk-in tubs. Store associates will know basic information about walk-in tubs, such as the country it was made, and what the most common benefits are. One of the biggest disadvantages you will face is you won’t have direct access to an expert for any in-depth questions and concerns you may have. This could leave you feeling uncertain about your potential purchase. Another big disadvantage of purchasing a tub from a store is you will have to arrange for the installation and go through several people to ensure it’s done correctly. any of us have experienced back pain. It is believed that this is the second most common form of pain. In case you were wondering, headaches are the first. This issue came to my attention when I participated in a rare activity in Victoria — shovelling snow. In the past, it was mostly older people who experienced back pain, but now more children are reporting back problems. This is thought to be caused by poor posture, sports injuries and carrying heavy backpacks. No matter who you are, back pain can be treated and (even better) avoided. Your back is a very complex structure. There are many muscles, tendons and ligaments that help your back straighten and twist. There are three things that usually cause muscle injuries. The first is: too much force for the muscle to handle, such as lifting too much. The best example of this is bending at the hips and lifting a box that is too heavy. The second is frequency — doing the same movement over and over. This type of injury is often experienced when people try to shovel too much snow. Shoveling involves repeated twisting of the lower back. The third is posture, holding the muscles in inappropriate positions for extended periods of time. Classic examples of this include sitting in a chair that has poor support for the lower back. Many of these stresses often combine to cause back pain. Perhaps the best way to prevent back problems is to keep your back strong and flexible. If you have any back problems, speak with your doctor or physiotherapist before trying these exercises. To strengthen your back, you must first strengthen your stomach muscles. These muscles help support your back. The best exercise is called an abdominal crunch. Lie on your back, with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Something soft under your back can make this exercise more comfortable. Place your hands behind your head, keep your chin up, look at the ceiling and curl your shoulder blades off the ground. This exercise only requires a small movement. Don’t pull up with your hands, don’t curl your chin to your chest and focus on using your stomach muscles only. Another great back exercises require you to be on your stomach with your arms

stretched out in front of you. Gently lift your arms and chin off the floor and SLIGHTLY arch your back. Hold this for a few seconds and lower them to the ground. Now try it with your legs. The alternate way to perform this exercise is to simultaneously lift your left leg and right arm, hold, then lower them. Repeat this with the opposite limbs. Remember to do it gently and only arch your back slightly. The first few times you do this take it easy, don’t do too much. Remember the second cause of back injuries is too much repetition. Prevention is fine, but how do you treat the symptoms of back pain? Pain relievers come in two general forms, topical (applied to the skin) or oral (taken by mouth). There are four main types of over the counter oral pain relievers in Canada: ASA, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and the now available, naproxen. They work very similarly, but they all have their slight differences. The most popular pain relief option is acetaminophen (Tylenol). It is known to help reduce the sensation of pain, but it does not reduce inflammation. The other over the counter pain relievers (ASA, ibuprofen and naproxen) have the benefit of reducing inflammation as well as all pain. You can also find muscle pain specific products which contain a muscle relaxant called methocarbamol. This muscle relaxant can be very effective, but can make you drowsy. Ask your Heart Pharmacist about which pain relief option would be best for you. Are there any warning signs associated with a sore back? There are several things to watch for. The pain should last no longer than two weeks. It should not be accompanied by a high fever. You should not experience numbness or pain in your lower limbs. Also, you should not have difficult or painful urination. Any of these symptoms should be brought to the attention of your doctor quickly. For more information about back pain and treatments, look at the BC Health Guide. You might have a paper copy in your home, or read it online at healthlinkbc.ca. Don’t forget to make sure you have a good, firm mattress. The back needs support while you sleep. This also applies to your chairs; make sure that they support your lower back and don’t slouch when you sit. Be good to your back and it will always ‘back you up’. heartpharmacy.com

are is defined as the provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance and protection of someone or something — and thankfully providing care is easily instilled in many of us. The question is not always how to care, but how to find the support you require to navigate care for yourself or someone you love. There are many options available to serve different levels of care needs. When aging in place, it is important to break down what care might look like at home. Taking the steps to understand what it is you require and what that looks like can be challenging. Many people are resistant to care because they have been independent for so long. This independence can be hard to let go of, however it is often beneficial to find help. An hourly, overnight or live-in caregiver has the skills to aid with things such as bathing, feeding, dressing, toileting, catheter care, mobilizing and transferring, as well as shopping, driving, cleaning and cooking. Often, hospitals are over-loaded with seniors waiting to go home with care. So many of our elders cannot go home without some level of care at home. Often live-in care is provided for several weeks or months until the client is stronger and requires less assistance. Frequently, upon discharge from hospital, clients require overnight care. The family caregiver is also the spouse, and getting a good nights’ rest can be a challenge. The family caregiver cannot function all day when up most of the night as well. Family will hire an overnight worker to sit with their parent with dementia to allow the spouse

to get a good night’s rest. You or your loved ones will be able to keep your desired lifestyle for as long as possible, in your own environment. Respite care and companionship is provided within the home or in the community, with special mind given to those struggling to manage dementia or Alzheimer’s care of a loved one — giving you peace of mind while allowing room to find a healthy balance in your own life. Providing care to a loved one can be challenging at the best of times, with ongoing physical and emotional demands. When looking for support for your loved one, it is important to maintain an understanding of what the best fit looks like for you, your loved ones and your family. Companions, caregivers and health care aides may be custom matched to best suit that of your family members’ needs and level of care. Whether providing home support or companionship, developing relationships with the seniors through consistency of care and support matters. Navigating care in Victoria is no easy task, and we are here to help. Let us know how we are able to support you through the complexities of caring for you and your loved ones. Last of all, seek out a Consultant on Aging (CPCA) that can answer all your questions. They will be able to provide you with the information you seek and direct you to agencies or individuals that will help you with your care needs. Care & Company: Senior Care Victoria is always looking for new staff to join our fantastic team. If you have a strong, professional background and are thinking about pursuing caregiving, we offer a two-day course covering all the basics to get you started. Our next course dates are April 4 and 5. Call: 250-382-2328 to register. seniorcarevictoria.ca

Senior Apprenticeship: Aging 101 Lost and found.....the world of sound

W

e all get only one body in our lifetime, which carries our head around and allows us to experience the extraordinary planet we call earth. Our senses of hearing, vision, smell, taste, and touch are afforded to us through an amazingly complex system of sensors, receptors, and processors that curate our experience of the world. For many of us, these systems have decades of flawless performance, with no regular tune-

ups or warranty recalls required. However, at some point, the aging process will pay a visit and initiate our enrolment in the Senior Apprenticeship program. It is a popular program, part of the core curriculum of life, and although we may rather take a different elective, there is no escaping aging 101. The program tends to provide opportunities to experience losses in our sensory interactions with the world, which may diminish our participation in activities we once enjoyed. Registered audiologist, JoAnn Klassen at Aud-Ability Hearing, has experience working with many people and she is always puzzled

as to why senior apprentices tend to delay addressing their changes in hearing: Family members will often “encourage” a hearing evaluation. Social gatherings may become more tiring and less enjoyable due to increased listening effort. It may seem that very few people speak clearly anymore, and a mumbling epidemic is in full force. When your arms are no longer long enough to read the label on the soup can, most people will gladly wear glasses. A diagnosis of hearing loss however, is not always embraced with the same enthusiasm. Research tells us that people wait an average of 7 years from the time they notice a hearing problem to

the time they do something about it. But why? Why would you put off doing something to improve your connection with the world around you? For many, denial of hearing difficulty helps to keep their self concept intact. Ironically, pretending to hear things when one clearly did not typically makes the hearing loss more obvious. Hearing and communicating are very complex processes that engage multiple centres in the brain, including those involved with working memory, attention, and other executive functions. In fact, the idea of a “cognitive auditory system” has been proposed by some researchers.

By addressing hearing loss when it first starts, you can take the appropriate steps to keeping your auditory system and your brain active and engaged. JoAnn Klassen encourages you to have a hearing evaluation by an Audiologist. This will provide you with a clear picture of your hearing health and gain understanding of the changes to your hearing. An Audiologist can provide counselling and strategies to help you modify your interactions with the world and if necessary, use hearing aids and assistive devices to maintain access to your soundscape. audabilityhearing.com
