4 Ways You Can Prepare to Age Well
What are the keys to living well no matter your age?
Eating right, exercising regularly, and maintaining social connections are a great way to start. But if you’re in your 50s, 60s, or 70s right now, planning for your future needs has never been more important.
Canada’s population is aging rapidly. Here in BC, the number of seniors has grown 17% in the past 5 years, and will continue growing until 2035. This will affect the support services available to seniors, and looking ahead now can help you maintain your quality of life.
Here are some ways to prepare:
Adapt your home. Stairs, bathrooms, and kitchens can present significant challenges for older adults, particularly if they require walkers or wheelchairs. Making changes in anticipation of future needs will help ensure you can continue to enjoy the comforts of home for many years to come.
Guard against falls. Falls are the leading cause of injury among older Canadians, but many preventative measures are easy to implement. Exercise helps maintain strength and balance. Getting rid of clutter, worn carpets, and loose throw rugs can eliminate tripping hazards. Explore options to manage chronic illnesses at home. As
Canadians live longer, chronic illnesses are on the rise. In addition to making healthy lifestyle choices that can delay or slow symptom onset, learning about managing your illness can help maintain your independence, and ease the burden on family caregivers.
Write advance care directives. Canadians are living longer than ever before but, for many, several of those years will include living with serious illness. Creating advance care directives can ensure you get to live your whole life on your own terms. It’s a formal way to let people know what kind of care you want in the future, and who you’d like making decisions for you, if
you’re ever unable to speak for yourself.
Eldercare Foundation has a longstanding commitment to advance knowledge and support people on their aging journey. We are pleased to support free
senior-focused workshops at the Yakimovich Wellness Centre. Learn more: www.gvef.org/yakimovichwellness-centre.

THERE ARE MANY BENEFITS THAT CAN ARISE OUT OF THIS KIND OF PLAY:
1. PHYSICAL—Table tennis promotes fitness, increased mobility, improved stamina and expanded flexibility. Regular exercise also contributes to cardiovascular health. Also, players often report an increase in hand-eye coordination.
2. SOCIAL—SITTC members aim to reduce isolation and build a sense of community. They do this by fostering social interactions, encouraging the formation of new connections and developing
a general sense of belonging.
3. MENTAL—By providing brain stimulation through various strategies and game play, many players experience enhanced cognitive functioning. Some neurologists have considered table tennis to be a game like chess in motion.
4. EMPOWERMENT—One of the goals of the SITTC is to boost the confidence of its participants. Its purpose is to establish a sustainable table tennis community that continues to grow and offer ongoing benefits to seniors. To this end, the club provides mentors who are actively involved in guiding and coaching any player who requests assistance.
5. COMPETITION—The SITTC environment strives to be friendly, non-competitive and inclusive. However, there is some support for competitive players. Coaching is available from qualified individuals and can lead to participation in the 55+ BC Games. Players from rank beginners to accomplished tournament enthusiasts are welcome at the Club.

TAge in place and keep your mind sharp
he Vista strives to help residents to stay engaged and enjoy their days. When you or your loved one’s memory and sensory perceptions become less reliable, it’s reassuring to know there are services available in your new senior living community, with specialized individual care for such cognitive challenges as Alzheimer’s and other dementiarelated diseases.
Known for luxury and comfort, the well-appointed contemporary and resort-like retirement community by Avenir Senior Living is designed to meet your lifestyle and personal care as your needs evolve. Welcoming social areas are sophisticated yet feel like home, and most have stunning ocean views. In a safe and secure environment, memory care will be provided to residents in 48 furnished studios on two floors, with 24-hour nursing support. The spacious studios allow each new resident to bring their own personal belongings to make it feel more like home. Each studio comes equipped with its own heating and air conditioning, private bathroom and shower.
Unique to Avenir communities, is the Cognitive Lifestyle program, through their nursing assessment process, identifies each resident’s individual cognitive skills and abilities. “As we fill up our second and third floors, we will separate our residents according to their cognitive level,” explains Jason Gurash, vice president, sales and marketing for Avenir. “Residents with early onset dementia will reside on the second floor, which includes a large outdoor patio for their enjoyment, and those with later stages will reside on the third floor.” He adds, “This allows our life enrichment coordinators to really get to know the residents and understand where they’re at so we can structure their daily activities and engagement accordingly.”
PRE-MOVE-IN, ORIENTATION
The Round Table Discovery Meeting is a process where the management team and nursing staff meet with each new family prior to their loved one becoming a new resident. “This meeting is an opportunity for us to learn as much about our new resident as possible so our staff can support a smooth transition,” says Gurash. “It helps us get to know their personality, medical history, their likes and dislikes, and allows us to focus on developing a person-centered care plan.”
A person-centered care plan takes into account the resident’s dignity, individuality, spirituality, preferences and meaningful engagement. These plans also include what’s important to the individual resident and what is relevant to their treatment and care. These plans are developed with the resident and family members involvement, allowing them to have a voice in their personal care and treatments. For example, an individualized care plan for each resident will include: when and what type of care they’ll receive, medication times, food preferences, personal privacy, personalizing their private space, activities they enjoy, and more.
RESIDENT’S ENGAGING ACTIVITIES
The care team guides residents through engaging activities focused on the seven dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, social, environmental, and vocational. They take a holistic approach to enrich the quality of their life each day. “We really strive to have our residents know they can do rewarding daily activities and feel fulfilled, so they are accomplishing things and engaging and enjoying their day,” says Gurash. “We know there’s a demand in the market right now and we’re excited to offer our services so families can have a sense of peace and comfort knowing their loved one is being
compassionately cared for.”
For more information about The Vista, visit liveatvista.ca or call 778-247-0780. Tours are offered daily. Open seven days a week. Avenir Senior Living is a proven leader in developing, designing, marketing, and operating exceptional senior care communities across North America. Avenir’s newest boutique retirement community, The Vista, in Esquimalt, is a resort-style living experience offering seniors different lifestyle choices and support services to comfortably age in place.

Six creative ideas to honour your loved one at a celebration of life
for
care
Written By Arbor Sta
Taking time to celebrate the extraordinary life of your departed loved one can be a healing and uplifting experience. To honour their legacy, we’ve put together 6 creative ways that you can celebrate their life. From recipe books to a simple photo collage, there’s something for every family.
1. SHARE YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY ON A CHALKBOARD.
Put up a large chalkboard at your gathering and ask everyone to write their favourite memory with that person. With fond memories on display, you can read stories you’ve never heard before. When everyone contributes, you’ll learn more about your loved one. It’s easy to source materials for your chalkboard from your local stationary or dollar store or a craft store like Michael’s.
2. CREATE A RECIPE BOOK WITH THEIR FAMOUS CREATIONS SO OTHERS CAN RECREATE THEM. Was your loved one known for their delicious pastries or cabbage rolls? Compile all of their dishes into a recipe book. For a more personalized book, you can add photos of them making these items, if there are any. Send a copy to a photo book company like Blacks or PIKTO and give them out to family and friends.
3. MEMORIAL COLLAGE
This is a great way to involve the entire family. Ask everyone to bring in their favourite photos of your loved one. Go through their yearbooks and photo albums and nd any images you’d like to include. Your Arbor funeral home will provide resources, like poster board and frames, where you can attach photos using glue or sticky tack.
Make it digital: Will some family members join your event by video call? One way to immerse them is by working with your Arbor funeral home to create a slideshow version
which can be played both online and by projection for those in person. Plus, by making it digital, you can also include video content.
4. CREATE A UNIQUE PLAYLIST OF THEIR FAVOURITE SONGS
Was your loved one a music lover? Why not compile all of their favourite songs to play during the event? Then, you can put all the songs onto a thumb drive and give them out as keepsakes afterwards. Alternatively, you can add them to a playlist on a streaming platform like Spotify or Apple Music so everyone can enjoy them whenever, wherever they are.
5. CREATE MEMORIAL STONES
Here’s a great opportunity to get a bit artsy. Stones can be placed in your garden as a unique and personalized keepsake of your loved one. You might source these from nature or from your local plant nursery or outdoor decor store. Set up a station at your event with paint, glitter, beads, and other materials people can use to decorate their stones.
6. MAKE A TRAVEL BOARD
If your loved one travelled a lot, consider putting a large map on display during the celebration of life. Then, stick thumbtacks on all the places they’ve visited. You can take it a step further and include any plane tickets, passports, or postcards of theirs.
Remembering your loved one can be as dynamic and special as their life.
At Sands Victoria by Arbor Memorial, we’re dedicated to helping you memorialize and uniquely remember your loved ones.

Why Wait – Eat Now!
Ask The Dentist!
by Dr. C Ross Crapo DDS
Q: I’m ninety years old. I’m in good health but my teeth on the lower are gone. I saw someone for an answer to my problem. He said I need dentures and maybe some implants. My partials are loose and so are my teeth – which are starting to hurt when I bite down. I told him I’m a fussy guy, not easy to please and he said maybe I should see somebody who does implants and makes dentures too. He said he doesn’t make many dentures so maybe a denturist would make the dentures and he would take out the teeth. That was eight months ago. Two months ago, I saw somebody who said he could put in the implants and do the dentures. He said I might be fine to have just an upper without any implants and the lower with implants because he said the lower one doesn’t stay in place as well. He gave me two options. One option was to put in three implants that will snap into a denture. The other one he said needs five implants and then a metal bar is made that is connected to all the implants. He said that it was better. It was certainly more expensive. Money is not really the issue but because of my age I think I’d like to spend less if the results are going to be the same. He said the lower denture would snap onto the bar if I went that way. So which is better – why should I go with one over the other?
A: As we get into our retirement years and beyond, we have a harder time adjusting to something artificial in our mouths. Even though upper dentures usually function quite well, it’s the balance and coordination
that is hard to manage. I’ve seen people have a terrible time for a year who were in your age group.
It’s worse with the lower because there’s no suction at all. Of the two choices you’ve been offered the option with the connecting bar is better because it supports all of the denture that will be snapped to it. You’ll have no problem if something gets under the denture because the bar stops the denture from being pressed into your gums. However, both options usually take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months before they’re working in your mouth and during that time you’ll be miserable.
A third option is a bridge connected to the implants on the same day. You’ll be able to eat immediately, there will be no pressure by the denture (right after surgery) on the gums and there will be faster healing with less swelling. The biggest advantage is that, like natural teeth, the new teeth don’t move, so you get used to them almost immediately.

Exploring Africa: A Continent of Diversity and Beauty
Detailed planning of an African safari can be an exciting and rewarding adventure and is essential to ensure a successful and enjoyable experience. Therefore, you should work closely with an experienced travel advisor specializing in travel to the African Continent, such as Authentic Africa Tours and Safaris
Consider the following five factors before meeting with your advisor:
1. DESTINATION:
• Africa offers a wide range of safari destinations, each with its unique ecosystems and wildlife. Participate in one of our local presentations to learn about the
different areas, safari types, and experiences, and to find a destination that aligns with your interests and expectations. Popular choices include Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, and Namibia. The next presentation in Victoria is scheduled for Sunday, November 05, 2023.
2. TIMING AND SEASON:
• The timing of your safari is important. Different regions have different peak wildlife viewing seasons. Consider the time of year you want to visit and the specific wildlife you want to see. Be aware of rainy and dry seasons, as they can affect accessibility and wildlife behavior. Consider low or shoulder

seasons to take advantage of lower pricing and fewer tourists.
3. INVESTMENT:
When:
• Determine your investment for the safari, including the level of accommodation, and desired activities. Safaris can vary widely in cost, so make sure your investment amount aligns with your expectations and priorities.
4. SAFARI DURATION:
• Decide on the duration of your safari. Longer trips allow for more comprehensive wildlife experiences, but they can also be more expensive, especially when visiting multiple countries. Balance your available time with your budget and preferences.
5. WILDLIFE INTERESTS:
• Identify the specific wildlife you want to see, such as the Great Migration or the Big Five, primates, birds, or specific species like cheetahs or wild dogs. Ensure your chosen destination aligns with your wildlife interests.
By considering these factors and engaging in a detailed conversation with your travel advisor, you can plan a memorable and fulfilling African safari that aligns with your preferences and expectations.

“The COVID-19 pandemic drove the ‘aging in home’ concept, where people preferred to stay in their homes and communities,”
explained Debra. “This exacerbated the “tea and toast syndrome,” where people would have a piece of toast and cup of tea for supper.” Your body doesn’t get the nutrition it needs and, just say after surgery, the hospitals will tell you that one of the things that brings people back is malnutrition, and the rising price of food and everything else makes it worse.”
The “aging at home” group is the business’s main customer base, followed by individuals coming out of the hospital..

Senior driving education vs assessment
Many geriatric researchers presenting at safety conferences agree that education, not testing, is the answer to seniors driving longer and safer.
Prior to intervention by family, government, medical personnel or police, seniors should take charge of their driving situation.
It is best to prepare for an impending driver assessment well ahead of time. It will relieve the stress of the unknown and the arrival of the dreaded letter. Seniors should be proactive, not reactive, when it comes to all sorts of things, particularly as it pertains to driving.
Many people believe seniors have a higher-than-normal crash frequency.
This is not true.
They do have a much higher chance of injury in a crash because
of the frailty brought on by advanced age, particularly those over 75 years of age.
Two presenters at a Driving School Association of the Americas conference made a very strong case that senior-driver harassment by governing bodies exists throughout North America. The most common crashes listed in order of frequency and cause of injury are:
• The left turn at intersections, crossing multiple oncoming lanes of traf c, causes injury for all drivers. This type of crash is often due to declining depth perception in seniors and lack of experience in teens.
• The fact that oncoming vehicle drivers could change to the outside through-lane at an intersection, without warning, and be hidden behind
the inside lane of two lanes approaching, was also a factor. For both seniors with slower reaction times and teens lack of experience, lack of scanning contributes to this crash.
• Rear end crashes are very common. This is caused by all drivers not understanding time and distance for stopping. Understanding the consequences of tailgating is a lesson to be learned by all.
Again, seniors are more likely to experience more injury than a teen.

Making the move to senior living:
“Tapestry at Victoria Harbour is the perfect community for me”
When Diane’s beloved treasures were carefully packed in boxes and loaded onto a moving truck, she choked back tears as they drove away from her beloved ocean-front home. “It was difficult to leave the beautiful place that I loved so much and had spent many years living in,” says Diane. “But I wanted to be the one to make the decision and to move on my own terms. Tapestry at Victoria Harbour is the perfect community for me.”
Diane had seen several friends avoid a decision to move even though there were many reasons to do so, simply because it seemed overwhelming or felt too early in their lives to make a change. She then watched as a choice was made for them or ended up quickly selecting a community that didn’t meet their expectations or needs.
Determined not to follow suit, Diane explored a number of seniors’ communities as she no longer wished to cook, wanted to focus on her wellness and desired a simpler model of living. Upon visiting Tapestry at Victoria Harbour, she selected a stunning twobedroom, two-bathroom suite. “I didn’t consider another community after seeing Tapestry,” she says.
For Diane, a well-known interior designer, Tapestry was the perfect fit from the minute she stepped into the community. She appreciated the warm ambience, comfortable design and picturesque location. Most importantly, the 10th floor suite she selected boasted expansive vistas with
views of the ocean, mountains and treetops – an absolute must for this nature lover.
Since moving into the community, Diane says Tapestry is everything she expected and more. “What I love most is the choices you have. I can be as busy as I want to or I can be solitary, which I enjoy.”
Diane has made it a priority to get involved in the community. She attends exercise class regularly, enjoys Pub nights and is excited to be part of Tapestry’s thriving book club. She especially enjoys dining in the community’s
restaurant where the extensive choices, chef-prepared meals and stellar service make for a delightfully satisfying experience.
Diane’s advice to older adults considering a move is simple: “Don’t wait. Don’t let the fear of change or anxiety hold you back. It could just be the best decision of your life.”
If you are an independent senior looking to live in a vibrant and sociallyconnected community, visit TapestryVictoria.com or call 250.419.4261. Schedule a tour and complimentary lunch.
Tapestry residents Brenda, Diane and Carmen, fully embrace an active and healthy lifestyle. They enjoy the opportunity to participate in many wellness activities, including daily exercise classes at Tapestry at Victoria Harbour.

Exploring the land of Patrick
Every March the world celebrates Ireland’s patron saint. But how much do you really know about St. Patrick and his adopted homeland?
Saint Patrick was the Christian missionary credited with converting Ireland to Christianity in the 400sAD. Since there are many legends surround his life it is difficult to find a definitive truth.
Many do not know St Patrick was not actually Irish at all. While his exact birthplace and date are not known it is believed he was born around the year 400AD in Scotland or Wales.
eventually escaped captivity after having a vision that told him to leave Ireland by going to the coast where he would find a ship waiting.
Following these instructions, Patrick made his escape. Eventually he made his way to France where he became a priest and following another dream, in which the people of Ireland were calling to him, he returned. He travelled throughout Ireland for forty years, preaching to the people and converted thousands, including the high king.
It is believed he died on the 17th of March, 460AD and that is why Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th. St. Patrick is just one of many legendary figures to come alive on a visit to Ireland.
This mystical land, that enchanted Patrick has had a similar affect on visitors from around the world. Perched on Europe’s Western edge, visitors can expect stunning scenery unfolding around every turn in this land steeped in history. Ireland offers a plethora of castles, cathedrals, cliffs and caves. From the lively capital of Dublin to the barren west coast to the longtroubled North every place has its own story to tell. Throw in some
whiskey, great music, legends and lore and plenty of Irish charm along the way and Ireland should be at the top of everyone’s destination list.
Victoria based Mile Zero Tours is off to Enchanted Ireland this October with a full 13-day tour of the Emerald Island. The tour includes all the must-see sites, a hefty dose of local culture, many meals and return airfare from Victoria. As always, enjoy complimentary home pick up and return service on this or any other Mile Zero Tours trip. For more information on this trip or others please visit MileZeroTours. com or phone 250 590 0811.
As a young man Patrick was kidnapped and sold into slavery as a sheep herder in Ireland. During his six-years in captivity, he became fluent in the Irish language. Patrick

1. EAT RIGHT:
A healthy diet may help slow or delay the progression of hearing loss. Make sure your meals contain foods rich in potassium (bananas, cantaloupes, tomatoes), folate (bell peppers, dark leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits), betacarotene (carrots, pumpkins), vitamin D (eggs, fish, fortified cereal or milk), zinc (oysters, chickpeas, cashews), and omega-3s (tuna, salmon, herring).
2. MOVE:
Making time for exercise is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. When it comes to your hearing, the good blood flow promoted by exercise is essential to the maintenance of the tiny structures in your inner ear.
3. DON’T SMOKE:
Pretty sure this won’t be news, but smoking is bad for you. The chemicals in cigarettes can make it harder for blood to travel through your body due to inflammation of the lining of your blood vessels, starving your inner ear of oxygen and causing irreversible damage.
FIVE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO MAINTAIN YOUR HEARING
5. WEAR YOUR HEARING AIDS:
If you have a diagnosed hearing loss, get hearing aids and wear them. If you think you have a hearing loss, but haven’t seen an audiologist, book a test. More and more research confirms that untreated hearing loss can have negative impacts on our overall health. There are strong correlations between untreated hearing loss and social isolation, which can contribute to cognitive decline.
4. USE HEARING PROTECTION:
Two of the most common causes of hearing loss are age and noise. You can’t stop the clock, but you can control your noise exposure. Hearing protection is relatively inexpensive and readily available. I never go to a concert without my music plugs. They turn down the volume to a safe level without distorting the music (we have lots in stock!). Muff style protection is great for operating small equipment.
If you’re due for a hearing evaluation, call Hear Inc. at 778-426-4876 to set up an appointment with one of our audiologist, or book online at HearInc. ca. We’d love to help you hear.
