The McLean Real Estate Group have a passion for all things real estate!
T
he team at the McLean Real Estate Group believes in a hands-on, grass roots, back-to basics approach to real estate with quality over quantity, customized personal service, market expertise and a focus on the details. With the majority of their realtors born and raised in Victoria, they pride themselves on knowing about neighbourhoods, the people who live there and the owners of local businesses. They enjoy promoting local restaurants and shops and thrive on being your source for information in addition to finding you the perfect home. The client success stories and sheer amount of testimonials on the McLean Group's website prove that their real estate clients truly do value their experience, appreciate their organization and trust their strategies and negotiation skills. Team leader Geoff McLean says "we particularly enjoy working with seniors and understand that selling and purchasing property
can be overwhelming", adding "we work with compassion and efficiency to ensure that our clients can focus on their lives, while the team focuses on their real estate". Their successful comprehensive marketing strategy includes targeted Facebook advertising, email marketing, content, marketing and personalized 1-to-1 outreach. 5 THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN BUYING A HOME WHEN YOU ARE OVER 55: • How much of a mortgage can you afford? If you are not purchasing the property outright, it is a good rule of thumb to make sure your monthly payments don’t exceed more than 25% of your monthly budget.
• Find a qualified Financial Adviser: Ask your friends and relatives who they use and pick the top 3 and interview each one until you find a good fit.
• Size of property: At this stage, your children may be out of your house, and larger living spaces are no longer required. You really need to assess how much square footage you need. Be ruthless!
• Your living arrangements: Think about what type of property you want. Would you consider moving in with your family? Would you relocate to a condo or perhaps get a roommate?
• Is outdoor space important to you? Would a townhouse appeal to you which would provide you with a bit of garden space so you can spend time outdoors gardening? Or would a condo suit you just fine?
can count on the McLean Real Estate Group to help you out! They provide a complimentary home evaluation with no obligation, and always welcome questions.

t’s not too early to start thinking about your travel plans to get through the unbearably mild west coast winter. Is travelling by train into the snowy Canadian Rockies on your bucket list? If so, perhaps this Mile Zero Tours guided tour is right for you! Picture this: Fall asleep to the gentle rumbling of the train engine in your cozy private sleeper cabin aboard VIA Rail. Wake up to the
smell of hot breakfast, roll over and open your window to a postcard image of winter wonderland. Perhaps you will be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the many elk or big horned sheep who frequent the area, or luckier still to see a bear or coyote from the safety of your cabin. Feast your eyes on snow-topped evergreens and towering mountains including Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Rockies, as you make your way towards Jasper. But the journey isn’t over when the train arrives in Jasper. From here, pamper yourself with three nights at the luxurious Jasper Park Lodge Resort. Spend your days Christmas shopping at the many boutiques, enjoying light winter
activities such as carriage rides or snowshoeing, or rejuvenating your mind and body at the spa. At night, curl up with a book by the fire, and why not - add a glass of wine! This is your opportunity to escape the stress of the holiday season and truly unwind. From Jasper, the deluxe guided tour takes you further east. Spend one night in Edmonton at the Fantasyland Hotel in West Edmonton Mall, and get ahead with your Christmas shopping. The next morning, enjoy a flight with WestJet back to Victoria, arriving home rejuvenated and ready to take on the season. Ready to go? How to mix contemporary styles with classic designs Combine styles for your uniquely personalized space

T
oday’s the day. You’ve decided to make a few upgrades to your traditional bathroom, maybe just some small changes to update and refresh, you think. But before you know it, you’re down the rabbit hole, considering an entire renovation and wondering if you can keep some of your favourite classic pieces and mix contemporary styles to achieve your desired results? The short answer, yes. Absolutely. Ultimately, once you’ve decided if you’re upgrading or rebuilding, the next step is to understand how to effortlessly blend styles, and the best way to strike a balanced look in your bathroom or kitchen. When combining styles, fi rst you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the differences between modern and contemporary, and how these can work together with traditional elements that blend cohesively.
MIXING DIFFERENT DESIGN STYLES “Bathroom and kitchen styles generally fall under modern, contemporary, traditional, or transitional (a fusion of modern and traditional),” explains Andrew Silbernagel, marketing manager, Splashes Bath & Kitchen. “Modern and contemporary have slight differences, even though people use the terms interchangeably. Modernist style refers to the design period of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and is about simplicity and function, but with strong lines and natural and neutral or earthy colours.” The modern Moen EuroCube Bathroom Collection for example, combines precise geometric lines with superior performance for the well-appointed bathroom. “On the other hand, contemporary is fashion-forward, constantly evolving with the times,”

he says. “It’s going to change with what’s currently popular, which right now is very similar to modern, the very minimalist look but a lot softer, curvier.” Some notable contemporary features for the bathroom or kitchen include square, clean lines and unique fi nishes such as matte black, gold, brushed gold, or modern brass. Popular brands include Blanco, Brizo and Duravit for modern and contemporary fi xtures. A timeless elegance is associated with traditional style, which is classic, comfortable and calm. With traditional fi xtures, you’ll see edges are soft and smooth, blending seamlessly. Rubbed bronze and polished nickel fi nishes complement traditional designs. The Kalia Rustik Bathroom Collection is a gorgeous solid brass example of traditional design that would easily blend with modern or contemporary. Silbernagel says if you’re mixing multiple styles, one of them will end up being slightly more dominant; therefore, it’s a good idea to choose one for your accent pieces and one as your base. Consult a Splashes Bath & Kitchen expert today to learn more about mixing contemporary styles with classic designs, and view their exceptional selection of brands and products at one of seven Vancouver Island showrooms, including Victoria at #101-740 Hillside Avenue and Westshore at #315-895 Langford Parkway.
“Antique or traditional styles often work really well as accents because they have a lot of character and stand out nicely, leaving you with modern or contemporary for your more minimalist base,” he says. For instance, your traditional fi xtures would pair well with a minimalist modern vessel sink, or a clawfoot tub married with a modern tub fi ller or sleek wallmounted tub spout, balance nicely. For the kitchen, consider a classic traditional chandelier with modern fi xtures, or wood countertops. The fourth style, transitional design, is a measured balance of modern and traditional elements. It fuses the warmth of rustic charm with modern simplicity to achieve a look of casual sophistication. It’s known for a subtle and clean colour palette to create relaxing and uncomplicated rooms.
SMALL SPACE STORAGE SOLUTIONS Silbernagel suggests incorporating medicine cabinets like those from Kohler or Paris Mirror, because they pull double duty in your bathroom. “Adding mirrors helps make your space look bigger, plus you gain valuable storage space,” he reveals. Vanities solve a lot of storage dilemmas, too, and if you have a non-traditional space, Splashes offers Stonewood Bath Cabinetry for custom-sized vanities. In the kitchen, the Franke Chef Center Kitchen Sink has integrated shelf, waste, and compost buckets, plus roller mats, cutting boards and other accessories that fit right over the sink itself—the perfect option for limited counter space. “Come in and meet one of our expert product consultants,” says Silbernagel. “We have the knowledge and quality products at competitive prices to help you craft a mix of contemporary styles with classic designs, or any look you’re trying to achieve for your dream bathroom or kitchen.” For more information, visit splashesonline.com

ou can’t put a dollar figure on it, nor can you simply go to the store to purchase it – few things in life are more important than certainty and piece of mind. It’s these invaluable, intangible qualities that go into every decision and programming choice at The Vista, Vancouver Island’s premiere retirement community. The air of uncertainty during the unprecedented weather events of 2021 – fi re, flood and a calamitous heat dome – put our most vulnerable populations, namely seniors, at risk. While the summer heat may soon be approaching, residents at The Vista, and their loved ones, can be assured of total comfort and safety knowing that each suite comes with its own individual climate-controlled unit. “Lots of infrastructure within seniors’ housing can’t withstand those temperature swings, but our modern, state-of-the-art facilities come with individually climatecontrolled suites to ensure that level of comfort and care,” explains Wayne Melvin, general manager for The Vista.
Currently under construction and scheduled for completion in Fall 2022, The Vista is an 11-storey luxury community encompassing the perfect fusion of design, style, comfort and livability. Support for B.C. 55+ Games a ‘perfect fit’ for Berwick Retirement Communities Games highlight the importance of sport and active lifestyles at all ages
S
upport for active lifestyles for seniors is integral to Berwick Retirement Communities — which is why it is proud to support the Greater Victoria 2022 55+ B.C. Games. Berwick is the presenting sponsor for the Games, to be held Sept.1317. The event offers an opportunity to celebrate and support healthy adults 55 and up through fun and competitive sport and recreation activities. “The power of sport is an engaging but powerful force that unites, heals and improves our health at all ages in our lives,” says Amir Hemani, Berwick’s CEO. “The drive at Berwick to harness an active aging lifestyle for the seniors living with us makes our involvement with the 55+ B.C. Games a perfect fit. The spirit of volunteerism will continue to foster community while supportive but fierce competition will bring out the drive in all participants. We are beyond excited to see the Games begin.” Several Berwick residents have competed in the Games. Among them are Joan Tebbutt of Berwick Comox Valley, who participated in golf; Kathleen Lamb, also of Berwick Comox Valley, who participated in race walking; and Lois Smith of Berwick Qualicum Beach, who medaled in swimming. And others will be volunteering. Eleanor, a resident of Berwick on
the Lake who represented Canada in field hockey at the Worlds in Amsterdam, held Canada’s national high-jump record for women and was inducted into the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame, is one of several volunteers eager to contribute to the celebration of athletics. Supporting an active aging lifestyle through programming and purpose-built amenities is one of many ways Berwick aims to celebrate diversity in older age. Residents of the soon-to-open Berwick Parksville, for example, can enjoy a state-of-the-art fitness centre, two pickleball courts, a putting green and multi-purpose lawn bowling. “Everyone has different personal needs, desires and aspirations for their health,” says Lesley Sikorski, director of sales, marketing and internal community engagement for Berwick. “And we know that a lifestyle anchored in wellness can increase the chances of individuals accomplishing those goals.” For more information or questions, contact: Lesley Sikorksi, Director of Sales & Marketing, Berwick Retirement Communities Email: lsikorski@berwickrc.com Cell: 1-250-634-1736 Telephone: 1-250-940-1319 berwickretirement.com

This is What Thriving in Retirement Looks Like – Meet Don
W
inner of the prestigious 2021 “Best in Wellness” award, Tapestry at Victoria Harbour is Victoria’s premier retirement community. A thriving and connected community, Tapestry is where individuals experience healthy and fulfi lled lives. One such resident, Don Ross, embraces an active and healthy philosophy that made moving here one of the best decisions he has ever made. In 2021, he explored the possibility of living in a community where he could enjoy an active social life and continue to pursue his passions. In his search for a new home, Don visited several established seniors’ communities in Victoria. He knew almost immediately that many were not for
him - but that all changed when he visited Tapestry. “From the moment I arrived, I guess you could say that Tapestry was the perfect fit for me,” says Don, thinking back to his fi rst visit and the initial six-day trial stay he enjoyed. “Everything was excellent; the food, the chefs, the social activities, the focus on
wellness and the employees. I simply couldn’t have asked for more.” Don has since made many new friends and established strong connections with other residents he now considers family. He is proud to be the Chair of the Social Committee and enjoys organizing activities that help other residents stay active and engaged. “I always believe if you stay active, you’ll be healthy,” says Don with a smile. “You have to keep moving and you’ll be ok. As they say, a rolling stone gathers no moss!” At Tapestry, every aspect of the community is designed with the residents’ health and wellness in mind. A daily schedule of events
and programming keeps residents engaged and socially connected while enjoying beautiful amenity spaces such as the restaurant, fi reside lounge and the rooftop terrace that overlooks the Inner Harbour. To experience the Tapestry difference for yourself, you can join them for a personalized tour of the display homes and enjoy a complimentary lunch. With Tapestry currently offering significant incentives whether you choose to own or rent, the time has never been better to explore Tapestry at Victoria Harbour by Concert.
