he Redfern is a boutique collection of new residences coming soon to 1920 Oak Bay Avenue. Located above a curated mix of commercial spaces, including a prominent new location for Oak Bay Avenue’s Discovery Coffee, these one, two and three bedroom concrete residences have been thoughtfully planned with large living spaces and stylish features that are unique in their design. “We’ve had such a positive experience working with our neighbours and the surrounding community over the past two years,” said Peter Jawl, Jawl Residential. “It’s been a very collaborative process to make sure this building is beautiful, but also adds vibrancy and value to the neighbourhood.” Homes at the Redfern feature custom designer kitchens, full size laundry rooms
and pantries, spa-like bathrooms, bright and airy living spaces and energy efficient air conditioning. The building’s exterior will feature natural materials, oversized patios with lush landscaping and overhanging greenery, a rooftop garden, and a public seating area along Oak Bay Avenue. A new crosswalk is also planned to help residents and neighbours easily get to local shopping, dining, and parks, which are all steps from their front door. An amenity-rich underground parkade features 45 parking stalls, electric vehicle charging, secure e-bike and cargo bike storage, a pet wash, a car wash stall, and large storage areas for each residence. “We have worked closely with our team at Cascadia Architects and Jenny Martin Design to create what we feel is a rare and truly exceptional
opportunity to own a concrete residence on Oak Bay Avenue,” said Jawl. “Our presentation centre is open 1-4PM Friday to Monday or by appointment. We've had a great response so far from visitors who have come by to learn about everything The Redfern has to offer.” Homes at The Redfern are Now Selling. To learn more, visit theredfern.ca

“Why didn’t I make this move years ago?”
By Andrew Trinder, Director of Operations, VRS Communities Seniors Living Ross Place in Victoria and Lakeside Gardens in Nanaimo
One Month Free!*
I
n my previous life, now feeling like a lifetime ago, I used to operate high end hotels, clubs and resorts. I was happy, I thoroughly enjoyed my chosen career which started in London, moved to obscurity for a while in Andorra, then followed the high life in Bermuda for more years than I should have, surrounded by turquoise waters, wealth and fame (others, not me). I escaped this and moved to Victoria in 2005 initially to run the Aerie Resort and Spa, before I was hired to operate Ross Place Seniors residence. Honestly, I did not know if it would be a good fit for me, but decided to try. From the moment I walked through the door, I loved it. I was surrounded by wonderful people and felt a sense of worth. Right then, I knew I would never be going back to hotels. That was ten years ago and I still ask myself the question “why didn’t I make this move years ago?” Having now welcomed and gotten to know thousands of seniors who have chosen to move from their home into a community living setting, whether Independent or Assisted Living, I now recognize they are all faced with similar

questions (albeit more important than a career choice). “Do I want to change my lifestyle?”, “Do I want to live in a community?”, “Will I like the other people living there?”, “Do I want someone else to cook my meals, and will it be to my taste?”, “Will I be interested in attending all these activities they are telling me about?”. My best advice is this – we never know what life has to offer if we stay within our comfort zone. Stepping out into something new, whether it’s a new career or residence, can bring an even better future than you imagined. You just have to give it a try. Ten years later, what I now hear from so many of our residents is the same response I had, “Why didn’t I make this move years ago?”. Footpaths In Goward Park: An Appreciated and Appreciating Asset
C
hip-covered footpaths on the 2.4-hectare (6 acre) woodland lease area surrounding Goward House measure in total about 700 meters. Walkers hiking all arms of this woodland path can walk nearly three-quarters of a kilometer, or just under half a mile. So many positive comments received from admiring community and Goward hikers are telling proof these public footpaths are already an appreciated feature. That the footpaths will appreciate even further over time will be known only in the years ahead. Present protocols encouraging outdoor activities are further indications during the past year of significantly increased interest in hiking in Saanich’s natural areas and
parks. At Goward House, an index of this enhanced interest is the increased rate of monthly uptake of Goward woodland footpath brochures from the three outdoor brochure dispensers located along the footpath route. As more Goward House Society members and more walkers from the neighbourhood become familiar with these footpaths, and as these hikers learn about formerly blackberry-dominated areas of new forest now developing after a decade of ecological restoration, this footpath system will be an appreciating feature over time. From the lawn and garden area adjacent to Goward House there are several entry points to this public footpath system. Until recently, the two entrances to the footpath system directly from the parking area were

less obvious, particularly when Goward House parking spaces are fully occupied. Now thanks to Saanich Parks, there are two footpath signs clearly visible above the rooflines of parked cars. One of these signs near the tearoom at the southeast corner of Goward House is shown in the accompanying photo. A similar footpath sign is located on the north side of Goward House at the lowermost vehicle entry point off of Arbutus Road. Walkers, help yourselves to a footpath pamphlet from one of the three outdoor dispensers. The pamphlet contains a map of the footpath system and a brief description of the surrounding woodland. Enjoy the visual and other sensory benefits provided by this valuable footpath asset.

Eating Well and Aging Well
T
he saying “you are what you eat” is not far from the truth as a healthy diet not only keeps our body functioning optimally, but also provides the mental and physical energy for everyday life. Diet plays a crucial role in protecting us from getting illness and health conditions. And while nutrition plays an important role in any person’s life, the benefits for seniors are particularly significant. According to a Harvard publication, “lifestyle factors may help delay the onset of cognitive decline – the erosion in mental skills and memory often seen before

dementia – and dementia itself.” Food plays a prominent role in Harvard’s lifestyle factors, suggesting that cognitive health may be bolstered by a diet rich with fruits, vegetables and healthy sources of protein while limiting red meat and refined carbohydrates such as sugar and white flour. Smart food choices can also help to control cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure and cholesterol. To enhance or maintain their wellness through a focus on food and nutrition, many seniors are looking to move into communities that will actively support their goals, while encouraging full independence. With properties in Vancouver, Toronto and now Victoria, Tapestry has positioned itself as a leader in active aging, offering vibrant and connected communities where individuals can stay healthy, strong, engaged and socially connected. Tapestry understands that a healthy and well-balanced diet is a central element of aging well and staying independent longer. Residents of Tapestry at Victoria Harbour, which opened earlier this year, benefit from
the care and attention put into the dishes that are served. Across the full-service restaurant and casual pub, meals are prepared to order by professional chefs using the highest-quality, local, fresh and sustainable ingredients that reflect Victoria’s unique geography as well as the changing seasons. Menu selections are reviewed by a registered dietician and emphasize plant-based nutrients and highquality proteins – reflecting the goal of creating meals that are not only unique and delicious, but also healthy and balanced. And with cooking and nutrition classes integrated within the daily calendar of events and activities that address holistic wellness, residents are inspired to continue to create their own culinary creations in the comfort of their own full kitchen. Twisted Ankles & Bug Bites
ummer is a time to enjoy the great outdoors. For some people that means working in the garden, for others it means hiking or playing sports. As your Heart Pharmacist, my summer plan is to worry about you. We are concerned about your health and we want you to stay healthy. Here are our top two summer health tips. We all like to be more active during the summer months. While this is a healthy idea, it might lead to twisted ankles, knees, or other joints. How to care for a twisted ankle is a regular question I am asked during the summer months. With all joint injuries, sprains and strains, you must remember the phrase R.I.C.E. This stands for
Rest, Ice, Comfortable support and Elevation. Rest might seem obvious, but people are tempted to ignore this stage. The overexertion or over-extension might seem like nothing and you are tempted to just carry on. At this point, it would be best to stop what you are doing and take it easy. Further use of the joint or muscle will only lead to further damage and more infl ammation later. The next step is to cool the area. Applying a cold pack or frozen bag of peas will help to reduce swelling, bruising and pain. Do not apply very cold items directly to the skin (place them on top of a cloth) and don't apply for more than twenty minutes at a time. The next step
Worried about the safety of living at home alone, but not ready for long-term care or full home-care? Sometimes a little help means a lot.
Heart Pharmacy’s Heart at Home program helps with:
• Daily in-home medication support, ensuring that your loved one is taking their medications daily • Assistance with more challenging medications like patches, inhalers, eye and ear drops, and insulin • Regular reporting to your doctor and loved ones of any issues with medications or general health • Companionship and structure, with the same faces every day at consistent times

is called comfortable support. It used to be called compression, but wrapping a joint too tight might further aggravate the area. You can wrap the area with a tensor bandage or use a joint brace, as long as it is not too tight. Finally, it is helpful to elevate the injured joint. This might be hard to do for sore backs, hips or shoulders, but try your best. This will comfort the sore area and help to minimize further injury. Tensor bandages, sport braces, instant cold packs and other fi rst aid supplies are available at your local Heart Pharmacy. The second most popular question I am asked involves treatments for bug bites or stings. Whether it's bees, wasps, mosquitoes, or spiders, the treatment is still the same. First, remove the stinger, if it is still present. Don’t grab it and try to pull it out, instead scrape it off with something rigid. The edge of a smartphone or credit card works nicely. If you have one, apply a tab or two of Afterbite to
help with the pain and slow the spread of the venom. Next you should apply a cold compress to the area to help reduce swelling. Apply cold for 15 to 20 minutes for the fi rst six hours. If the reaction is minor, you could apply topical calamine lotion or hydrocortisone cream. If the swelling or itchiness is pronounced, taking an antihistamine by mouth might be your best bet. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl®) or chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Tripolon®) are your best choices. If the reaction or rash spreads quickly, or seems to be large, seek medical attention. If you carry an Epi-Pen for serious allergic reactions, this might be a good time to ensure it has not expired Get out there and enjoy all our lovely city has to offer. From the Sooke Potholes to Symphony Splash to Moss Street Paint in, there is much to see and do. Just remember to care for your health, as I want you to stay healthier for longer. Brought to you by your friendly Heart Pharmacy Pharmacist

I
By Laura Van Sprang, Manager at Sands Funeral Chapel of Victoria
can recall when I was around 8 years old, walking with my dad when we saw a long procession of vehicles coming our way. He told me we should stop and show our respect, as it was a funeral procession. He pointed out the long shiny black car and told me it was the hearse that was carrying the person who had died. He explained that all the other cars following with their lights on were that person’s family and friends and that they were processing together to the cemetery to bury their loved one. I remember they were all driving very slowly, much slower than the other cars usually did on that road. Most cars were letting them go by and some were even pulling over or stopping to avoid disrupting this respectful journey. I knew this was an important event and was in awe of how
everyone just knew what to do to show their respect. They too must have had dads who taught them about funeral procession respect when they were my age. It was not too long after this, I attended my grandfather’s funeral and experienced being a part of a procession fi rst hand. There was a powerful feeling of importance and community as I noticed the immediate attention from those on the road and sidewalk. Cars letting us go by, people on the street showing their respect; one man even removed his hat as we passed. My grandpa was certainly worthy of this recognition and effort and I remember feeling so proud. It felt right. I wonder what has changed since then. It wasn’t that long ago… this story is from 1984. Now that I am in funeral service, I have had the honour of being a part of many funeral processions. I still fi nd myself fi lled with a sense of pride as we lead our cortege of professional vehicles through the community, with family and friends following in such a traditional and respectful way. But unfortunately that feeling gets interrupted more and more it seems, as the years go by. People do not slow down anymore, stop or let you go by. In most cases I fi nd they actually speed up to get around us, to not get “stuck behind” our procession. It makes me sad. And if it makes
me sad, how does the family feel? In a feedback survey Sands received from one of our client families, we found out. We were pleased to read the positive comments about our staff and services, but one comment that was made, we discussed as a team in length. It read: “I know it is difficult, but it would be nice if there was a way for us to follow the hearse without other cars cutting in on the way to the burial site”. This was the procession experience for this family, a very different one than mine in 1984. Although we do our very best as funeral professionals to keep the procession together, ultimately if someone wants to cut in, they will. So after reading this, perhaps together we can help to change this fading community support for such a powerful tradition. And if you see a procession coming your way or in your review mirror… take a moment as we travel by to the fi nal resting place, to show your respect to the family and to the person we are honouring, who is being carried in the long shiny black car.
