The Vista’s new memory care studios help optimize resident’s quality of life
T
he Vista strives to help residents to stay engaged and enjoy their days.
When you or your loved one’s memory and sensory perceptions become less reliable, it’s reassuring to know there are services available in your new senior living community, with specialized individual care for such cognitive challenges as Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. On the heels of The Vista’s Oct. 12 grand opening, the 11-storey residential retirement community is finalizing its licence for its Memory Care studios, which is expected to be approved before the end of 2023. Known for luxury and comfort, the well-appointed contemporary and resort-like retirement community by Avenir Senior Living is designed to meet your lifestyle and personal care as your needs evolve. Welcoming social areas are sophisticated yet feel like home, and most have stunning ocean views. In a safe and secure environment, memory care will be provided to residents in 48 furnished studios on two floors, with 24-hour nursing support. The spacious studios allow each new resident to bring their own personal belongings to make it feel more like home. Each studio comes equipped with its own heating and air conditioning, private bathroom and shower. Unique to Avenir communities, is the Cognitive Lifestyle program, through their nursing assessment process, identifies each resident’s individual cognitive skills and abilities. “As we fill up our second and third floors, we will separate our residents according to their cognitive level,” explains Jason Gurash, vicepresident, sales and marketing for Avenir. “Residents with early onset
dementia will reside on the second floor, which includes a large outdoor patio for their enjoyment, and those with later stages will reside on the third floor.” He adds, “This allows our life enrichment coordinators to really get to know the residents and understand where they’re at so we can structure their daily activities and engagement accordingly.”
PRE-MOVE-IN, ORIENTATION The Round Table Discovery Meeting is a process where the management team and nursing staff meet with each new family prior to their loved one becoming a new resident. “This meeting is an opportunity for us to learn as much about our new resident as possible so our staff can support a smooth transition,” says Gurash. “It helps us get to know their personality, medical history, their likes and dislikes, and allows us to focus on developing a personcentered care plan.” A person-centered care plan takes into account the resident’s dignity, individuality, spirituality, preferences and meaningful engagement. According to Candice Peterson, BSN, RN, director of care, it also includes what’s important to the individual relevant to their treatment and care. These are developed with the resident’s involvement, allowing them to have a voice in their personal care and treatments. For example, an individualized
care plan for each resident will include: when and what type of care they’ll receive, medication times, food preferences, personal privacy, personalizing their private space, activities they enjoy, and more.
RESIDENT’S ENGAGING ACTIVITIES The care team guides residents through engaging activities focused on the seven dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, social, environmental, and vocational. They take a holistic approach to enrich the quality of their life each day. “We really strive to have our residents know they can do rewarding daily activities and feel fulfilled, so they are accomplishing things and engaging and enjoying their day,” says Gurash. “We know there’s a demand in the market right now and we look forward to getting licensed to open our Memory Care studios. We’re excited to offer our services so families can have a sense of peace
and comfort knowing their loved one is being compassionately cared for.” For more information about The Vista, visit www.liveatvista.ca or call 778-247-0780. Tours are offered daily. Open seven days a week.

Senior driving education vs. assessment M Ahead of the any geriatric researchers presenting at safety conferences agree that education, not testing, is the answer to seniors driving longer and safer.
Prior to intervention by family, government, medical personnel or police, seniors should take charge of their driving situation. It is best to prepare for an impending driver assessment well ahead of time. It will relieve the stress of the unknown and the arrival of the dreaded letter. Seniors should be proactive, not reactive, when it comes to all sorts of things, particularly as it pertains to driving.
Two presenters at a Driving School Association of the Americas conference made a very strong case that senior-driver harassment by governing bodies exists throughout North America. The most common crashes listed in order of frequency and cause of injury are: •
Many people believe seniors have a higher-than-normal crash frequency. This is not true. They do have a much higher chance of injury in a crash because of the

frailty brought on by advanced age, particularly those over 75 years of age.
•
The left turn at intersections, crossing multiple oncoming lanes of traffic, causes injury for all drivers. This type of crash is often due to declining depth perception in seniors and lack of experience in teens. The fact that oncoming vehicle drivers could change to the outside through-lane at an intersection, without

Rear end crashes are very common. This is caused by all drivers not understanding time and distance for stopping. Understanding the consequences of tailgating is a lesson to be learned by all.
Again, seniors are more likely to experience more injury than a teen. Joan Wallace Driving School offers a free seminar for seniors at 2 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of every month.

Activity helps seniors remain independent and self-reliant
A
s highlighted by the U.S. National Institute on Aging, one of the continuing misconceptions about getter older is that seniors should “take it easy” and avoid exercise to reduce the potential for injury. As many studies have shown, however, this is an outdated misconception as any level of activity has been shown to help individuals maintain their physical and mental health and remain independent and self-reliant. Tapestry at Victoria Harbour understands the importance of maintaining wellness through life’s journey. Remaining active helps individuals at every age increase energy, improve sleep and maintain strength, stability and balance. A focus on wellness enhances an overall sense of personal well-being. Tapestry’s commitment to wellness is reflected in its hiring of kinesiologists, who have specialized in the study of human movement, including physical activity and sport and their resulting impacts on health and quality of life. As key members of the wellness team, they design group and individual programs to help residents maintain and improve their overall wellness. Fatima Rabago, a kinesiologist at Tapestry at Victoria Harbour, is committed to helping residents debunk the idea of the “frail senior.” Fatima, who is a fierce wellness advocate, finds tremendous satisfaction in supporting residents to achieve goals they may never have thought possible. One Victoria resident, after working regularly with Fatima, was able
to stop using a walker. She now attends fitness classes regularly and says the biggest benefit of improving her physical condition has been “using exercise to heal instead of medicine.” What makes Tapestry’s wellness approach so unique is that its kinesiologists take a holistic approach. They consider nutrition, mental sharpness and emotional strength in addition to physical fitness. With access to internal resources, they create well-rounded programs that extend beyond the gym. Each program begins with an initial assessment to identify goals and establish a roadmap to help residents be successful every step of the way. Dedicated support keeps residents energized, motivated and encouraged, and the community’s kinesiologists modify programs to meet evolving needs. If you are an independent senior looking for a unique community that offers endless opportunities to enhance your wellness, visit TapestryVictoria.com or call 250-419-4261. A pallbearers’ role in the funeral service Laura Van Sprang
or perhaps it is your first time … maybe even your first funeral.
When I was young, I remember reading the poem Footprints by Margaret Powers, which is still one of my favorite pieces of writing today.
Rest assured, there will be a team of funeral professionals onsite to guide you and lead you in the process.
It impacted me greatly, particularly the part where the individual sees only one set of footprints in the sand. When you continue reading, we find out they haven’t been abandoned, but rather had been carried during the lowest and most hopeless time in their life. This poem reminds me of the human connection we have for one another. To know that someone cares so deeply for you, they would bear some of the weight when they are needed most.
Including pallbearers in a service is a time-honoured tradition that should be considered even if a cremation is chosen as the final disposition. We also see individuals chosen to carry the urn for a service, on its own or with two to four urn bearers using an urn arch. This is a beautiful way to enter and exit the chapel and the cemetery with an urn. There are no rules to who can perform the respectful duty.
That’s special. It only seems fitting, and in our nature, to want to provide that time-honoured tradition of carrying our dearly departed loved ones to their final resting place.
Even if someone is unable to carry to the casket or urn physically, perhaps due to a disability or being of a young or old age, they can still participate by walking beside the casket or urn as an honourary pallbearer. As our family members age, we are often faced with less family and friends available and it’s a good idea to have the conversation about who you would call upon, when the time comes, for you and your family members. It is also OK for you to let important people in your life know that it would be something you would be available and honoured to do. It is so impactful to watch a casket being carried. The weight that is being taken on is more than just the individual them self – it is also the love, the loss, the honour, the memories, and the realization of this being the final journey, that will be taken together.
Being asked to be a pallbearer for a family member or close friend who has died can be a very emotional yet meaningful experience.
When we are at our most vulnerable and no longer have the ability to carry ourselves, what an amazing gift and duty we perform for our loved ones, ensuring they are carefully transported on that final journey, by those who loved them most.
Being chosen is a clear sign that you are a trusted and valued individual who has played a significant role in the person’s life to be given this responsibility.
Many times, it is those who once carried us as children, that we may one day be called upon to carry ourselves, and our two sets of footprints, will again become one.
You want to make sure it is done with the dignity and respect it requires. Possibly, you have participated as a pallbearer before

One night I dreamed a dream. I was walking along the beach with my Lord. Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to me and one to my Lord. When the last scene of my life shot before me I looked back at the footprints in the sand and to my surprise, I noticed that many times along the path of my life there was only one set of footprints. I realized that this was at the lowest and saddest times of my life.

That always bothered me and I questioned the Lord about my dilemma. “Lord, you told me when I decided to follow You, You would would walk and talk with me all the way. But, I’m aware that during the most troublesome times of my life there is only one set of footprints. I just don’t understand why, when I needed you most, You left me.” He whispered,”My precious child, I love you and will never leave you never, ever, during your trials and testings. When you saw only one set of footprints it was then that I carried you.” Footprints (by Margaret Fishback Powers)

etailed planning of an African safari can be an exciting and rewarding adventure and is essential to ensure a successful and enjoyable experience. For the best experience possible, work closely with an experienced travel advisor specializing in travel to the African Continent, such as Authentic Africa Tours and Safaris. Consider these five factors before meeting with your advisor: 1. Destination: • Africa offers a wide range of safari destinations, each with its unique ecosystems and wildlife. Participate in one of our local presentations to learn about the different areas, safari types, and experiences, and to find a destination that aligns with your interests and expectations. Popular choices include Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, and Namibia. The next presentation in Victoria is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 5. 2. Timing and Season: • The timing of your safari is important. Different regions
have different peak wildlife viewing seasons. Consider the time of year you want to visit and the specific wildlife you want to see. Be aware of rainy and dry seasons, as they can affect accessibility and wildlife behavior. Consider low or shoulder seasons to take advantage of lower pricing and fewer tourists. 3. Investment: • Determine your investment for the safari, including the level of accommodation, and desired activities. Safaris can vary widely in cost, so make sure your investment amount aligns with your expectations and priorities.

Loose teeth and implants don’t mix ADVERTISING FEATURE
Q: One of the unspoken but hard rules I learned as a child was that of personal sacrifice. So, as our children needed things we counted their needs more important than our own. This guided our spending so if we as parents had a need it was taken care of in the most economic way. I give you this background because as my wife and I had tooth concerns we often put them off until the tooth had to be pulled. I have only a few teeth left up top and on the bottom. I saw a dentist and he noted that although they were still functioning, some were getting loose. He told me that I had adequate bone for implant supported teeth but I’m getting on in years and as for me, these teeth are still working… well almost. Recently, I lost a bridge. I don’t have any molars and only one or two teeth past my eye teeth. On my upper left side, the eye tooth and everything back behind is gone.

sure that that crown supported by an implant only hits when the patient makes maximum biting pressure on the natural teeth. Implants are wonderful but if abused with too much pressure the bone around them will slowly resorb away. In your case if your teeth are loose they may well move enough to allow extreme pressure on the two or three implants you’re talking about. Take these facts into your discussion with your dentist. Do what is best for you. It’s your time now. If we can help, we’d like to. Call 778-410-2080 for a consultation. When the dentist told me the extent of the treatment I could and perhaps should have, I thought that was too much for my age so I asked if I could just put one implant in a missing tooth spot in my lower front teeth and a couple on the upper left to replace the lost bridge. He said he’d take a few more records and then we’d talk. I really think at my age it would be foolish to spend a lot of money when I may not be around in a few years. Your thoughts please. A: The key to your dental problems is the state of your loose teeth. Often times people in and out of the dental profession feel that implants are the answer to making loose teeth more stable. They reason that loose teeth can only be helped by integrating or “slapping together” the loose teeth with solid implants. Experience shows this is not a predictable strategy as loose teeth actually back out of their joining ties. This experience has been repeated many times to the dismay of the dentist and disappointment of the patient. Secondly, it’s important to know that all teeth move microscopically – even the ones not seen to move as the dentist tries to ascertain tooth stability. When implants are placed between natural teeth and crowns fixed to them, it’s important for the dentist to make

The Canadian Club of Victoria
T
he Canadian Club of Victoria provides an informative, engaging, and friendly forum to explore the issues that matter to most Canadians. With our local roots dating back to 1906, it is a nonpartisan meeting place for the inquiring, the influential, and all Canadians alike. Charles McCullough, a journalist in Hamilton, and four of his friends, founded the first Canadian Club in 1893. McCullough sought to foster interest in matters affecting the welfare of Canada – just 25 years after Confederation. Soon after, The Canadian Club of Toronto was founded in 1897 and other clubs followed across Canada. The Honourable Vincent Massey described them as forming “…the only organization in Canada that exists for the primary purpose of promoting a faith in our country and a love for it.” Before instantaneous news coverage, prime ministers used the clubs to reach out to Canadians – particularly in times of crises like the outbreak of war. The Men’s Canadian Club of Victoria was formed in 1906, followed by the Women’s Canadian Club of Victoria in 1909. The two clubs amalgamated
into one club in 1995.
membership.
Today, the Canadian Clubs of Canada offer news-makers the opportunity to speak in depth about key issues to their various audiences. There are approximately 40 Canadian Clubs across Canada, including in the cities of Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria.
We meet for lunch on the third Tuesday of the month from September through June with two exceptions, explained below. Our guest speakers make 20 to 30-minute presentations, and then take questions from the audience. These lively and thought-provoking sessions enable us to delve more deeply into the topic of the day, providing insights and inspiration. And the three-course luncheons also get rave reviews!
We bring together people who share a keen interest in Canadian life. Our programs provide context, perspective, and a deeper level of understanding of the issues shaping our nation. Our mission is to promote Canadian identity by presenting a forum for inspiring speakers to provide insights on issues of importance to Canadians. We provide a non-partisan forum to explore social, cultural and political topics, looking beneath the headlines of the day to explore more fully the factors shaping Canadian life. No invitation required! You are warmly welcome to attend our monthly luncheons, seasonal celebrations and special events. It is our hope that you will find these events to be meaningful and rewarding, and will decide to support our mission by joining our
In December and April, instead of a lunch meeting, we hold special events. For December, we hold a tea party at the Empress. This tradition goes back for 110 years. How to protect your loved ones from loneliness this winter 12 | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2023
“W
orse than smoking 15 cigarettes a day.” These were the findings a recent study revealed about the dangerous health impacts of loneliness and social isolation. Turns out a game of crib, a midweek lunch date or a drive around town may be just what doctors should be ordering this winter. Loneliness is “associated with an increased risk of heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline,” stated PLOS medical journal. A separate report from the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health even went so far as to declare loneliness an Immunometabolic Syndrome emphasizing the damaging effects of loneliness on everything from stress response to glycemic control and fat metabolism.
Twenty per cent of B.C.’s population is over 65 and nearly 30 per cent of seniors live alone. A staggering 43 per cent of seniors report feeling

lonely on a regular basis.
Loneliness, social isolation and associated declines in health are issues affecting our entire province – but this topic is of special significance for those of us with a loved one who is living on his or her own. Loneliness researchers emphasize the importance of strong relational support systems – not simply for short-term happiness, but for staving off numerous degenerative and cognitive disorders. Now is the perfect time. With the long days of West Coast winter just around the corner, now is the perfect time to boost the support systems (and immune systems) of our loved ones who are living alone. Be encouraged: the emotional weight and responsibility of your loved one’s well-being need not fall solely on your shoulders, even if you are the primary caregiver and source of relational connection. A little awareness, thoughtfulness and

planning can make a big difference. You don’t need to go it alone. In fact, it’s better for everyone that you don’t. The broader the network of caring individuals in our loved one’s weekly routine, the better. Welcoming a professional companion caregiver into your loved one’s support system will provide multiple layers of benefit. New relationships create healthy mental stimulation – an important benefit for the cognitive health of anyone entrenched in familiar routines. Such relationships, though they may be only a few short hours per week, will provide an invaluable layer of
support for family-caregivers in case of illness, unexpected surgery or out-of-town travel. No longer driving? Not a problem. Plan to get out of the house. Ask your loved one if there is an activity or club they would like to join. Logistics need not be a barrier. Did you know you can hire transportation services specifically designed to
serve seniors? Weekly outings or clubs that once were the source of much connection can still be an option even for those who are no longer comfortable driving or taking public transportation. Anticipation brightens the darkest of days. Finally, as much as you can, schedule your visits or outings. The anticipation of a pleasant event is said to offer an even greater emotional boost than the event itself. If you add companion care visits or assisted-transportation outings into the weekly routine, create an easy-to-read calendar for your loved one so they have a powerful visual reminder they are not alone. Long, dark winter days may be inevitable, but loneliness doesn’t have to be.

Why having a games night is a great activity for seniors E
veryone loves a good games night – but did you know that it is actually very beneficial for seniors to participate in games, and not just because they are fun? Here are three reasons why having a games night is a great benefit to you or your senior loved one. MEMORY AND BRAIN HEALTH Card and board games are excellent for helping improve memory and brain strength. Stimulating the brain via colours, letters, and numbers enhances brain function, helps with age-related ailments, such as dementia. Games like crossword puzzles and chess can be great for keeping the mind strong. HAND MOBILITY Another great thing about a games night is that you will be able to work on hand mobility. Playing games require players to use different fine motor skills like grabbing, holding, and laying cards or pieces down in an organized way. Games are a great way for seniors to keep their hands active and strong
while also having fun! SOCIAL A games night is the perfect place to meet new people as seniors home residents have a common topic to discuss (the game) and can always turn the focus back to the game to help with any social anxiety you may have. Games night is a great way to meet people who like similar things and develop new friendships. A great social game to play with others is bingo, which encourages interaction and keeps your memory sharp. On top of meeting new people, games night is a great place to hang out and socialize with existing friendships or just go and have fun playing great games! claim what you don’t get back as a contribution towards medical expenses on your income tax.
The downside of bundled pricing is that the initial out-of-pocket is higher and you may end up paying for services that you don’t use. Also, it gives the impression that the cost of hearing aids is higher than it actually is. UNBUNDLED: With this payment option, you pay for your hearing aids when you receive them and pay for the services you follow up services required only as needed. THIS IS GREAT FOR THOSE WHO: 1. want to keep the initial outlay of money as low as possible, or 2.

A factor most people aren’t aware of is that different companies may have completely different pricing models.
BUNDLED: In B.C., generally the hearing aids and all the future services associated, such as followup appointments for maintenance and adjustments, are paid for when the hearing aids are purchased.
Some roll all the associated costs into the price of the hearing aid (bundled), while others split the costs out based on what the wearer needs (unbundled).

The downside of this option is that many extended benefits plans acknowledge claims for hearing aids, but not for audiology services, so your reimbursement may not be as high. As we age and begin to lose our mobility and sense of balance, bathing can not only become difficult but also a cause of additional stress and anxiety. Fear of falling and a fear of not being able to get out of the tub are two of the most common occurrences with many of our seniors today. Walk-in tubs have become extremely popular in the last decade and estimates show that people who go ahead and install a walk-in tub in their homes today, will be able to live independently for an additional five years. Walk-in tubs are exactly what the name implies, tubs that have large doors that open, and you simply walk in and sit down on a 17-inch-high seat. You close and lock the door and the tub fills rapidly while you are sitting comfortably and safely inside. All the taps and controls are easily accessible at your fingertips. Once you are done your bath, tum the dial and the tub quickly drains and you simply open the door and walk out of the tub. The various models all have numerous grab bars and nonslip surfaces making getting in and out worry free. Walkin tubs are designed for an aging population who desire to remain

independent for many years to come. Manufacturers have optional tub designs accommodating every shape and size of person and bathroom. There is a tub size that will fit in the space where your existing tub or shower is. Walk-in tubs can be as basic as a soaker tub to as deluxe as your own personal spa. Offering numerous options such as heated back, multispeed warm air jets, water jets, ozone, light therapy, aromatherapy, and more. The benefits of a walk-in tub are numerous. Many people crave being able to confidently have a bath again and find relief by just soaking in a warm tub. Owners say they believe they sleep better after a soothing bath. The warm air or water jets give a deep massage and help to stimulate circulation, thus carrying additional healing oxygen throughout the body to the hands and feet. This has shown positive results increasing mobility and helping to relieve the pain and symptoms of such conditions as arthritis, chronic back pain, fibromyalgia, diabetic and peripheral neuropathy, as well as various other acute and chronic conditions. The Canadian Government website
Perhaps, one of the best decisions I’ve made is when I decided to go ahead and put a walkin tub in my house. I no longer have a fear of falling and this will help me live in my home for many more years to come.” Jean S.
states that 1 in 4 seniors fall every year, and 25% of these falls are serious, leaving the victims permanently disabled and bedridden. A large
percentage of these falls take place in the bathroom. Aside from all the pain and suffering it also ends up costing the Canadian medical system two
billion dollars annually. Therefore, the British Columbia and Federal Governments are helping many people who decide to purchase a walk-in tub now. The help comes in the forms of a tax credit, a Provincial Sales Tax waiver, and in certain qualifying cases a $9,000.00 Government Grant. As we all age and the years fly by, many seniors are faced with the reality that taking proactive steps today and deciding to retrofit their homes with a walk-in tub is one of the best investments they can make to help them age in place, comfortably and independently in the home they love. g Sponsored content provided by Island Walk-in Tubs.
