HOW I BECAME A LATER-IN-LIFE YOGI
It was my granddaughter who started me on Yoga. For many years she practiced regularly and extolled the virtues of deep breathing, inner peace, and relaxation. When she shared with me, her talks always had a hint of “you should try this”. I would smile, nod, and think to myself “Yeah, right”.
It was about a year ago I saw Silver Threads Service, an organization for those of us older than 55, had a Gentle Yoga class. I signed up but kept it to myself. No point in creating expectations I couldn’t keep.
The first class was a pleasant surprise. The room was calm, quiet, and with candles all around. (All battery operated, no open flames in case someone falls over.) There were “props”, for those situations when the floor is too hard on your back. Just use a foam block prop. Can’t quite reach your toes? Use a strap prop to get a stretch. Ingenious really. At the second class, everyone relaxed into it. We snickered in solidarity at the involuntary groans from one of our classmates. Shortly followed by outright sympathetic laughter at some other involuntary
noises. If you get my drift.
The instructor was great with us. She enjoyed teaching us and guided us with good humour. She learned about our ailments and adapted for us. Educating us along the way. I went to every class in the session and even practiced at home. My flexibility improved, and I was sleeping better. I signed up for the next session.
Then one day, in conversation with my granddaughter, I confessed that I was following a Yoga practice. I cheerfully stated that I enjoyed the poses, especially the Savasana at the end of the
class. She is my biggest and best cheerleader. I am grateful to her, and to Silver Threads for making me a Later in Life Yogi. Namaste. Gentle Yoga Class are available Mondays from 1:00 to 2:00pm at the Victoria Centre and Thursdays in the morning at Saanich. Chair Yoga is Tuesday and Thursdays at Victoria. Riobel is shaping the future of water with Canadian design innovation
Evoking the timeless elegance of lighthouses, the Nibi collection is Riobel's latest design
INTRODUCING THE
NIBI COLLECTION
Riobel unveils Nibi, the newest design collection in its repertoire of unique bathroom fixtures.
The Nibi collection exemplifies what sets Riobel apart, moving faucet design away from the traditional by infusing each piece with a unique story. The Nibi collection draws inspiration from the metaphor of the lighthouse.
Nibi Collection
The lighthouse — engineering marvel, architectural icon, and oceanic beacon — symbolizes durability and stability. Its distinctive, tapering form is echoed in every piece of the Nibi collection.
This is Riobel's vision: a blend of novel and familiar, minimalist without being starkly industrial or so avant-garde that it may look dated in a few years.
COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS
The Nibi collection includes fixtures for bathtubs, sinks, and shower sets.
Nibi faucets come in various styles, including top handle, side handle, and two-handle options. There’s even taller Nibi faucets designed for vessel sinks. All Nibi pieces are offered in black, brushed gold, brushed nickel, and chrome finishes.
SMALL DETAILS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
Small but significant details, like clearly marked handle positions, exemplify the thoughtful Nibi design.
"An adjustable aerator pivots to fine-tune the water stream direction, preventing splashing," says Sara Luzopone, showroom consultant at the Victoria Splashes Bath & Kitchen. "Nibi's substantial handles can be easily moved with any part of one hand or arm, offering more ergonomic and hygienic functionality."
RIOBEL'S DESIGN FLAIR
Inspired by the sculptural shapes of contemporary architecture, the Riobel design team creates distinctive and innovative brassware. Based in Saint-Jérôme Quebec, Riobel seamlessly blends European elegance with North American innovation.
Visit a Splashes Bath & Kitchen location or Splashes.com to learn more about the Nibi Collection. Pieces from the Nibi collection are on display at many of our Splashes Bath & Kitchen showrooms.

Ask The Dentist!
by Dr. C Ross Crapo DDS
Q: Over my lifetime I’ve had a good deal of work on my teeth. I’ve lost a number of teeth to one thing or another but nothing dis guring. About three weeks ago I visited the dentist and he discovered a lot of decay. I had a lot of x-rays and moulds were made of my teeth. I went back and discovered that my condition was worse than I thought. After
Implants and Dementia
a good discussion, the dentist suggested I bring my husband back to go over the options. On the second consultation, my husband told the dentist that I had been diagnosed with a form of dementia, which is true. There are times that I am very lucid but other times when I’m quite forgetful. At this appointment, the dentist suggested a couple of treatment plans. One had me root canaling and crowning most of the teeth, in fact all the teeth that could be saved. He said this could be done and then implants put in where the non-salvageable ones were right now. He said dentures were an option but my palate wasn’t a
good shape for having them and the lower denture is never a good idea – my husband has upper and lowers and never wears the lower one at home. He said I could also have my teeth out and get implants that hold in the dentures. He thought in the long run, that might be best. It’s hard to think of losing my teeth so I’m just working this out in my mind. What would you do?
A: When decay is rampant, teeth can still be saved if they are treated appropriately (yes root canals and crowns may be the answer). This plan requires a high level of home care i.e., excellent ossing and brushing. In some cases, very specialized home care products are mandatory to get everything clean throughout the day, every day.
Dentures are dif cult to habituate oneself to in senior years. When you couple that with poor anatomy in the mouth, you may feel crippled in your ability to chew your food and easily carry on a conversation because the dentures will move around and make function uncertain. Lastly, it seems to me that rampant decay coupled with times of forgetfulness, mandate a solution where decay is not a problem and caring for dentures that may be misplaced regularly or lost, is not possible. I’m saying that teeth xed to implants in your mouth, giving you good function, is the best solution.
Yes, you will still have to see the hygienist often but your chewing ability, your speaking ability and quality of life, will ultimately be better.
If we can help, we’d like to. Call 778-410-2080 for a consultation.

Aging in the right place – what you need to know
WHAT IS THE C.A.R.E. FAIR?
What’s in a name? Why did we create the C.A.R.E. Fair? We know many acronyms, those of businesses and government agencies; and now we know COVID. What we all learned with COVID was what was happening to seniors during the pandemic, those in care and those isolated at home, was shocking.
CFUW Saanich Peninsula and CFUW Victoria wanted to address this catastrophe, nding ways to push for change locally and nationally. We joined with our colleagues across Canada, studied the research and global reports. We surveyed members across BC to better understand their lived experiences and bene ted from the support of then BC Seniors’ Advocate Isobel Mackenzie.
What we found is that Canada is an outlier in terms of availability, affordability, and access to services for seniors compared to many industrialized countries. We learned that many people want to “age in place” but lacked knowledge on services, found services underfunded or grossly inadequate, and with insuf cient oversight.
We developed a template to improve the quality of services offered for aging in place and began lobbying government for change. Out of this effort
CFUW Saanich Peninsula developed the idea of a C.A.R.E. Fair (Community Access to Resources and Engagement) to provide a forum where seniors can learn what is available in the community to “age in the right place” and to live life to the fullest.
With a grant and support from local sponsors here we are. Our 75 members have worked hard to organize this event which illustrates our motto: The power of women working together.
The generosity of spirit by our sponsors has been inspiring, as we started planning this event without any initial nancial backing - but given the restricted availability of a venue to accommodate an event of this size a decision had to be made and our group proceeded “on a wing and a prayer.” The Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney was booked for Thursday, June 6, 2024.
The C.A.R.E. Fair has 60 booths for attendees to gather information and get answers to questions. Concurrently there are 11 presentations scheduled throughout the day, all of which are free to the public.
The new BC’s Seniors’ Advocate, Dan Levitt, will be opening the event and will provide an overview of his background, the role of his of ce, current issues and challenges facing seniors in BC, systemic ageism, and the of ce’s priorities for the coming years.

Sunrise breakfasts to sunset dinners at The Vista
It has been widely reported that the growth of the senior population in Canada is one of the most signi cant demographic trends in our country’s history. It has been estimated that at the end of 2023 there will be approximately 7.5 million people in Canada who will be between the ages of 65 and older. This growing demographic poses an amazing opportunity for companies such as Avenir Senior Living, a family-owned and operated company from Brentwood Bay, BC who specialize in serving seniors each day in their communities.
For today’s senior many will consider making a major lifestyle shift from their traditional living environment and consider a move into a senior living community. While on this journey they will tour many communities to determine what is the best t for them. A recent study of 500
seniors conducted by the E15 Group found that 94% of seniors will look at the quality of food while making their decisions.
Additionally, 77% of seniors studied stated that menu variety was important and 66% said that staff friendliness was top of mind.
That is why at The Vista, the newly opened community opened by Avenir, there was an emphasis on designing and creating unique amenity spaces that would exceed their residents’ expectations and offer a wonderful working environment for the staff.
The most unique feature of The Vista is the 11th oor which features the Palm Dining Room, Fred & Gingers dance hall, English High Tea room, French Bistro, Polo Lounge, Art Studio, Gym, and outdoor patios. All these resident areas are surrounded by oor to
ceiling windows offering breath taking ocean and city views which is what inspired the name The Vista.
“From the dining room our residents can watch the cruise ships and other sea vessels come on go on any given day” says Maria

Eligon General Manager. “When speaking to our residents, many tell me that they have never seen another dining room like this at any other community they toured before choosing us” continues Eligon.
With Avenir’s long history in the senior living industry, the data from the E15 study was not surprising to them. Quality of food, menu variety and staff friendliness have been paramount to Avenir over the years.
“I have been a chef since 1988” says Fred Bjarnason – Director of The Vista Hospitality & Food Services “and I love serving our residents foods that they enjoy and that bring back memories for
them”. “One of my passions is to incorporate our resident’s family recipes into our menu” continues Bjarnason “this makes our resident feel a part of the dining experience and we then name that item after them or their family, it makes it really fun for everyone”. Chef Fred holds the culinary designation of the Canadian Chef de Cuisine (C.C.C.) which is highest designation for chefs in Canada.
The Vista truly is a senior living community that you must see it to believe. Tours are offered seven days a week and independent living rental suites are still available. Call today to schedule your tour at 778-247-0780 or visit our website LiveatVista.ca

Heart to Home Meals
That’s the premise behind Heart to Home Meals, which aims to empower individuals with healthy food choices and bring meals to your door.
The business, launched in Victoria in June of 2022 by Scott & Debra Downton, offers more than 200 meals, soups and desserts prepared to the highest standard.
“Our chefs follow the Canada Food Guide, and we have a global executive Four Seasons chef who has travelled the world, cooked for celebrities, and makes nutritious
food taste really good,” said Scott. “He creates all these options and then at the peak of cooking, the meals are ash frozen to lock in the nutrition and avour.
You get the meal, put it in the oven for 30 minutes or in the microwave for 10 minutes, and it’s almost as though the meal was just cooked. The smells ll your kitchen, the avour bursts in your mouth.”
Serving Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, the business has rapidly grown, with approximately 1,800 customers, including a network of veterans. Meals come in three different sizes: mini, standard and hearty for larger appetites.
Nutrition options are colour coded for easy classi cation. They include meals for limiting sodium and carbohydrates, gluten, saturated fat, high- bre diets and additional protein, to name a few.
“The COVID-19 pandemic drove the ‘aging in home’ concept, where people preferred to stay in their homes and communities,”
explained Debra. “This exacerbated the “tea and toast syndrome,” where people would have a piece of toast and cup of tea for supper.” Your body doesn’t get the nutrition it needs and, just say after surgery, the hospitals will tell you that one of the things that brings people back is malnutrition, and the rising price of food and everything else makes it worse.”
The “aging at home” group is the business’s main customer base, followed by individuals coming out of the hospital.. hearttohomemeals.ca

Cure for Hearing Loss?
Iremember way back in the 80’s when I was in university, one of my audiology professors said there would someday be a cure for hearing loss, but it wouldn’t happen in our lifetimes. Turns out, she may have been wrong. Scientists and researchers are actively exploring possible ways to restore hearing. They are coming at it from different directions resulting in some very exciting ndings. Let’s delve into some of the most promising treatments offering hope to those living with hearing impairment:
GENE THERAPY
Gene therapy aims to correct genetic mutations that cause hearing loss. Scientists are exploring the use of harmless viruses to deliver healthy genes into the inner ear. This innovative approach holds great promise and has shown positive results in animal studies and could potentially restore hearing in
individuals with genetic hearing disorders.
STEM CELL THERAPY
Another avenue of research is stem cell therapy. Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can develop into various specialized cells in the body. Scientists are investigating the use of stem cells to regenerate damaged sensory hair cells in the inner ear. Animal studies have demonstrated encouraging results, with stem cells successfully restoring hearing in certain cases. However, further research is required to optimize the effectiveness and safety of this treatment before it can be applied in humans.
DRUG THERAPIES
Several drugs are being investigated for their ability to protect and regenerate hair cells, improve auditory nerve function, or reduce in ammation in the inner ear. These pharmaceutical

interventions have the potential to slow down or even reverse hearing loss caused by age, noise exposure, and certain medications. Earlier this year a group in the Netherlands reported improvements in puretone audiometry and speech perception in noise measures in 20-25% of patients in their phase II trials.
Scientists continue to unravel the complexities of hearing loss, and while there is much progress that needs to be made, the future holds the potential for breakthrough treatments that could restore hearing and it could happen well within our lifetimes!

Senior driving education vs assessment
Many geriatric researchers presenting at safety conferences agree that education, not testing, is the answer to seniors driving longer and safer.
Prior to intervention by family, government, medical personnel or police, seniors should take charge of their driving situation.
It is best to prepare for an impending driver assessment well ahead of time. It will relieve the stress of the unknown and the arrival of the dreaded letter. Seniors should be proactive, not reactive, when it comes to all sorts of things, particularly as it pertains to driving.
Many people believe seniors have a higher-than-normal crash frequency.
This is not true.
They do have a much higher chance of injury in a crash because of the frailty brought on by
advanced age, particularly those over 75 years of age.
Two presenters at a Driving School Association of the Americas conference made a very strong case that senior-driver harassment by governing bodies exists throughout North America.
The most common crashes listed in order of frequency and cause of injury are:
• The left turn at intersections, crossing multiple oncoming lanes of traf c, causes injury for all drivers. This type of crash is often due to declining depth perception in seniors and lack of experience in teens.
• The fact that oncoming vehicle drivers could change to the outside through-lane at an intersection, without warning, and be hidden behind the inside lane of two lanes approaching, was also a factor.
For both seniors with slower reaction times and teens lack of experience, lack of scanning contributes to this crash.
• Rear end crashes are very common. This is caused by all drivers not understanding time and distance for stopping. Understanding the consequences of tailgating is a lesson to be learned by all.
Again, seniors are more likely to experience more injury than a teen.

TSix creative ideas to honour your loved one at a celebration of life
aking time to celebrate the extraordinary life of your departed loved one can be a healing and uplifting experience. To honour their legacy, we’ve put together 6 creative ways that you can celebrate their life. From recipe books to a simple photo collage, there’s something for every family.
1. SHARE YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY ON A CHALKBOARD.
Put up a large chalkboard at your gathering and ask everyone to write their favourite memory with that person. With fond memories on display, you can read stories you’ve never heard before. When everyone contributes, you’ll learn more about your loved one. It’s easy to source materials for your chalkboard from your local stationary or dollar store or a craft store like Michael’s.
2. CREATE A RECIPE BOOK WITH THEIR FAMOUS CREATIONS SO OTHERS CAN RECREATE THEM.
Was your loved one known for their delicious pastries or cabbage rolls? Compile all of their dishes into a recipe book. For a more personalized book, you can add photos of them making these items, if there are any. Send a copy to a photo book company like Blacks or PIKTO and give them out to family and friends.
3. MEMORIAL COLLAGE
This is a great way to involve the entire family. Ask everyone to bring in their favourite photos of your loved one. Go through their yearbooks and photo albums and nd any images you’d like to include. Your Arbor funeral home will provide resources, like poster board and frames, where you can attach photos using glue or sticky tack. Make it digital: Will some family members join your event by video call? One way to immerse them is by working with your Arbor funeral home to create a slideshow version which can be played both online and by projection for those in person. Plus, by making it digital, you can also include video content.
4. CREATE A UNIQUE PLAYLIST OF THEIR FAVOURITE SONGS
Was your loved one a music lover? Why not compile all of their favourite songs to play during the event? Then, you can put all the songs onto a thumb drive and give them out as keepsakes afterwards. Alternatively, you can add them to a playlist on a streaming platform like Spotify or Apple Music so everyone can enjoy them whenever, wherever they are.
5. CREATE MEMORIAL STONES
Here’s a great opportunity to get a bit artsy. Stones can be placed in your garden as a unique and personalized keepsake of your loved one. You might source these from nature or from your local plant nursery or outdoor decor
store. Set up a station at your event with paint, glitter, beads, and other materials people can use to decorate their stones.
6. MAKE A TRAVEL BOARD
If your loved one travelled a lot, consider putting a large map on display during the celebration of life. Then, stick thumbtacks on all the places they’ve visited. You can take it a step further and include any plane tickets, passports, or postcards of theirs.
Remembering your loved one can be as dynamic and special as their life.
At Sands Victoria by Arbor Memorial, we’re dedicated to helping you memorialize and uniquely remember your loved ones.

Tapestry resident enjoying her ‘grand finale’ to a life well lived
There are a lot of misperceptions about aging, but Brenda, a resident of Tapestry at Victoria Harbour, is quite happy to put them all aside by living life to the fullest.
Brenda and her husband Bert had spent 14 years splitting their time equally between Victoria and Ontario when, she says, they realized they needed to “put down our tools and start to play – we had earned it, and it was time to allow ourselves to do that.”
Once the couple made the move to Tapestry at Victoria Harbour, Brenda says she experienced a profound change. “I walked in the door, and a whole new life opened up.”
Brenda says Tapestry offers her all the things she loves. On any given day she might attend an early morning tness class, followed by some kayaking or a brisk walk (she tries to get 8,000 steps a day), or even a stroll on the local beaches where she has discovered rockhounding and the relaxation of being by the ocean. Her full day is often topped off with drinks or dinner with friends.
“Tapestry’s 7 Dimensions of Wellness are so much a part of how we live,” Brenda says. In addition to
physical wellness, the dimensions include intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and social, among others.
Brenda adds that her life now at Tapestry is more active, less stressful, and very invigorating. “I feel tter. A person's age should not be de ned by their chronological age, but rather how they feel in their head, how they are living, and how they perceive themselves,” she says.
The couple recently spent time sipping champagne and reminiscing about their 55-year marriage while relaxing on a beachfront bench. Their life together, Brenda says, has been marked by mutual respect, humour, and forgiveness.
“We are really enjoying this
segment of our lives,” Brenda says. “We say to each other that this is the grand nale of a life well lived, and that we are so fortunate to be able to enjoy our life at Tapestry.”
