Breeze by the sea.
K
nown as a quaint, upscale retirement community, the town of Sidney is experiencing a shift in demographics that is moving the average age of its residents decidedly lower while ramping up the vitality factor. Residents love the seaside charm, small town vibe and remarkable hospitality of idyllic Sidney BC. "Sidney is much more diverse now," says Siobhan Newton, head of sales for Breeze by the sea, a new condominium development in Sidney. "It's not just in the people walking around, but also in the restaurants and in the building [that's happening]. It's still like being in a village, and it has that community feel, but it's more eclectic than it used to be."
Whether you are an art and culture buff, an outdoorsy type or have older or wee ones to entertain, there is something for everyone. Sidney enjoys a thriving arts and culture community that celebrates local artists and local crafts. From the seaside sculpture walk, to the beautiful totems at the Mary Winspear Centre, the lovely art galleries and local cafés, Sidney has it all. "Breeze by the sea in Sidney has excellent accessibility for everyone," says Newton. "If you are older and you're at the point where you can't drive, there are three major grocery stores, a theatre, wine boutiques, a liquor store, clinics and a hospital five minutes away.” Breeze by the sea, built by Homewood Constructors is a
collection of 37 one, two and three bedroom condominium homes that highlight the use of energyconscious materials, features and fixtures and offer private patios and spacious balconies complete with gas barbeque outlets provide opportunities for effortless entertaining. The remaining 3 bedroom homes start at $749,900. “Purchaser feedback has been fantastic, over half of the units are now occupied and new owners are enjoying the Sidney lifestyle, the pet-friendly atmosphere of the building, and the bright open floor plans of their new homes” says Newton. Risk factors for developing blood clots
W
e might take our blood for granted. It is just there, working hard to transport oxygen and nutrients around our bodies. It also transports carbon dioxide and waste products for removal. The only time we think about our blood is when we get a cut and see the red stuff ooze out. Generally this is not good, so our body tries to seal this hole. It does this with blood cells called platelets. Lets learn about how platelets work, in a very simplified way. Normally, your platelets circulate inside your arteries and veins and don’t do too much. However if there is localized trauma (damage) it can cause blood vessels to rupture. This can either be a bruise (trauma where the outside skin is not broken) or a cut where the surface of the skin is broken. The reaction of platelets is the same. Platelets come into contact with collagen which surrounds blood vessels and send signals to make themselves ‘sticky’ to try and seal the hole. This
stickiness forms a gel-like clot, which plugs the hole. Eventually your body fixes the damage and normality is restored. Troubles arise when blood clots form where they should not and block blood flow in arteries or veins. If clots form in the small arteries around the heart, this could lead to a heart attack. In the arteries in the brain, this is a stroke. If a clot forms in the lower legs, this could be a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Blood clots can form elsewhere, but this is not very common. About 1-2 out of 1000 adults will develop a serious blood clots each year in Canada. THERE ARE A FEW RISK FACTORS FOR DEVELOPING BLOOD CLOTS • Over 65 years of age • Obesity • Long travel (sitting for longer than four hours) • Smoking • Certain oral contraceptives • Previous history of blood clots
The Thrombosis Canada group has a great way of recognizing signs of a blood clot with the acronym. CLOTS. • Chest Pain • Light headedness • Out of Breath • Leg Tenderness • Leg Swelling Any of these symptoms should be brought to the attention of a medical professional promptly. Tapestry’s unique approach to senior living now available in Victoria
W
hen designing Tapestry, Concert envisioned a unique type of seniors community, recognizing that a new generation of older Canadians wanted lifestyle options that recognized their desire to continue to live purposeful lives in a vibrant and wellness-enriched environment where they could nurture mind, body and spirit. Concert, a respected real estate developer, saw the establishment of Tapestry as a natural extension of its business and an opportunity to create a unique model in an industry that was seen as institutional and health-care based. Today, Tapestry continues to shine with its focus on wellness and personalized service, and attract those who reject an outdated model of retirement living. For our current generation of active aging independent adults, this is good news. According to a seniors report from Statistics Canada, adults over the age of 65 are a rapidly growing segment of our population and are living longer and healthier lives than
previous generations. Seventy-five is really the new 65, and as mature adults live longer and desire to stay more active, Tapestry’s model of senior living remains a perfect fit for those seeking to continue to
pursue their purpose and passion, and live independently surrounded by like minded neighbours and friends. Tapestry currently operates four active aging communities for independent adults. Tapestry’s newest community, Tapestry at Victoria Harbour, opened its doors in February 2021 and offers residents a vibrant, socially-connected and engaging environment with programs and services aligned to the seven dimensions of wellness to ensure a holistic approach. At Tapestry, residents enjoy an exhilarating schedule of daily programming with activities including fitness classes, educational courses, social clubs, volunteer opportunities and more. Residents stay engaged and
socially-connected while enjoying the community’s beautiful amenity spaces such as the rooftop terrace overlooking the Inner Harbour, a full-service Restaurant and Pub, fitness centre and fireside lounge. Complete with full kitchens, the beautiful and spacious homes at Tapestry at Victoria Harbour allow residents to remain independent while enjoying the perfect community setting. If residents don’t feel like cooking at home, they can opt for healthy and delicious meals in the Restaurant or Pub, where professional chefs create mouth-watering options using local, fresh and sustainable
ingredients. Residents also enjoy exceptional services, such as weekly housekeeping, concierge and transportation. To celebrate the opening of Tapestry at Victoria Harbour, Concert is offering a $10,000* Move-In Credit, whether residents choose to own or rent. Book a private appointment and tour the display homes as well as the beautiful, completed amenity spaces. W By Laura Van Sprang, Manager at Sands Funeral Chapel Cremation and Reception Centre (Victoria)
What do I do now?
hen a “fi rst call” comes into the funeral home and there has been a death in the family, we are usually faced with one of these following statements: • We have made pre-arrangements and have things in place to move forward, or: • I have been through this before and have a pretty good idea of what to expect, or: • A more panicked and stressed voice stating: “I have never done this before…What do I do now?” In any of these cases, we are standing by ready to assist and guide the family through the next steps no matter how prepared or unprepared they fi nd themselves. Being that the topic of what to do and what is needed to be done after someone passes away is not your typical water cooler chat or subject of choice for a family gathering, you are not alone if you do not know what to do. Now that we’re on the subject, I’d like to share some information that may help you feel a little more prepared if you should be faced with assisting in a loved one’s fi nal arrangements or thinking about organizing your own in advance.
First detail some are not aware of is that Power of Attorney ends at death. The Executor of the Will would then have the authority to move forward with making arrangements. If there is no Will, we look to the Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Act/ Control of Disposition, which lists, in order, who is legally allowed to then handle all arrangements for the disposition and funeral. It is a good idea to know in advance who would be legally responsible to take care of your loved one, or even yourself after death. Once the family has been notified of their loved ones passing, the Executor or authorized Next of Kin, will need to contact a funeral home to assist you. With permission, they will pick up your loved one from the place of death and bring them into their care. A funeral arrangement can sometimes take a few hours depending on the services chosen and details to be discussed. An appointment should be made before heading to the funeral home, to ensure the time is set aside to answer all your questions and that your wishes can be discussed. There are no “silly” questions and funeral directors do not expect you to know all the answers at this time. We will be there to guide you through and always take into consideration that grief is present and needs extra patience, comfort and care. A few things to keep in mind that will be requested at the arrangement are: • The legal name, address and some form of identification of the deceased. • The deceased S.I.N. • Care Card #. • A copy of the Will (if available). • The decedent’s parent’s names, including their mother’s maiden name and where they were born, (if the parents information is unknown, we can still proceed). • Bring in some clothing, a current photo, and if you want to write an obituary- we can assist with that as well.
The funeral home will register the death with vital statistics. The death certificates can be issued once the doctor has signed the medical certificate of death and the vital statistics have been obtained at the arrangement. We work under the Privacy Act so all information given is protected. The family can order as many death certificates as they need at $27 per certificate (this may vary per province), which will be paid to Vital Statistics Office on your behalf. Your funeral director will work with your family to create the personal way you choose to say goodbye to that special person in your life, whether it be large or small. It could be a traditional funeral, a celebration of life or a more intimate send off with only a few people gathered. These days people are constantly missinformed that, “Funerals today start at TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS!” Of course, depending on what each family fi nds value in, it certainly can in some cases it may be more. It’s important to note there are so many
options to pay tribute and share your grief with the community. Your funeral director will work with you and your family to create a meaningful service that will also fit into your budget. Rest assured there will be educated, compassionate professionals there to guide you, from that difficult “fi rst call”, all the way through the arrangements and services, and also set you up with valuable information and resources to prepare you for the task of settling an estate. For further information or questions about “What to do?” Please do not hesitate to call 250 388 5155 or stop by at Sands Funeral Chapel Cremation and Reception Centre (Victoria).

Nikki Macdonald, Liberal Candidate for Victoria
I
am running to be Victoria’s next Member of Parliament because I believe now more than ever, we need experienced and strong leadership to get the support and resources to recover from the pandemic. Since the pandemic began in 2020, I have helped community and business leaders get the information and updates on the federal government programs that unfolded from CERB to small business loans. Having served as a senior advisor to PM Jean Chrétien and with an extensive network across Canada, I have been able to deliver. I listen carefully to Victorians to understand what they need to stay safe and to recover. With a strong policy background and a Ph.D. in public
administration, I used my expertise to convey that information to decision-makers to understand our community needs. I believe that it is vital to contribute to my community. I am proud of my volunteer work serving as a board member and supporting many local and national organizations. I learned early on watching my Dad the Hon. Donald S. Macdonald about how an MP can work with all levels of government to build new housing, address issues of poverty, and support all members of the community. I am running as a Liberal because I believe in values of inclusion, compassion and diversity. I am also deeply committed to improving the way we protect and
steward our environment. That is why I focused my academic research on ocean policy and why I continue to work in environmental governance and sustainable technologies. When elected, I will build on my research on the Salish Sea to engage all levels of government, First Nations, and across the border to develop a collaborative process that monitors and works together to better protect this unique ecosystem in which we live. When safe to do so, they very much look forward to welcoming back many returning guests as well as new faces. Mile Zero Tours has been busy planning tours with a focus on domestic travel. f you are a senior in your late 70s to late 80s and in good health, you probably want to live in your family home for as long as you can. Maybe you like to garden, or host large family visits, or maybe the thought of downsizing is so stressful you just can’t bear it. 5 signs you’re ready to look for a retirement community
By Andrew Trinder, Director of Operations at VRS Seniors Living (Ross Place in Victoria. Lakeside Gardens in Nanaimo)
U
nlike days of olde, retirement communities are no longer institutional settings, but instead provide a level of service more akin to a hotel experience. Looking to leaders in the hospitality sector, a retirement residence's focus should be as much on hospitality and customer service as it is ensuring a safe and connected way of living. Reasons for making the move are usually a combination of: 1 Feeling isolated at home and needing more social engagements and shared activities 2 Wanting relief from shopping, cooking and daily chores 3 Reducing your administrative commitments of life 4 Mobility challenges in the home 5 Requiring centralised care and 24/7 personnel
Like a hotel, the quality of these hospitality services, range of amenities and overall experience, can differ and is often reflected in the monthly living rates. Although the seniors living industry is dominated by national and international companies, there are BC-based, not-for-profit Residences, that offer quality services for seniors, and operate in an environment which deeply cares about the individual. Not only are non-profit residences owned and operated locally, they offer fair-market rates and invest profits back into the seniors communities in which they serve. Such a monumental change in your life requires time and research. Start by touring a few residences to find the best fit and make the right choice for you.
