V
acations come in many forms. Some people want nothing more out of their vacations than to get some rest and relaxation on a beach while others prefer the adventure of traveling to faraway lands and seeing some sights. Would-be vacationers who aren’t sure where they fall on that spectrum might be surprised to learn there’s one type of vacation that provides both R&R and adventure. Cruise ships are loaded with luxury amenities that passengers might expect to find in high-end resorts. And because cruise ships typically dock in various ports during their time at sea, travelers who want to experience new and unique cultures can get their fill of adventure. “Fulfilling travel dreams since 1998, we’ve made it our mission to be the best at what we do – providing an incredible travel booking experience by offering the best travel deals to the most sought-after destinations with the world’s premiere travel suppliers. Some people may only know cruise ships from the stories they hear of ships stranded at sea. For example, in early spring of 2019, a Viking Sky ship suffered an engine failure, temporarily stranding the ship and its roughly 1,300 passengers off the coast of Norway. As scary as that situation may have
seemed, it’s important to recognize that the ship was ultimately towed to safety and that all passengers and crew were okay. In fact, a 2017 study from the cruise and tourism consultants group G.P. Wild notes that while worldwide cruise ship capacity grew by more than 41.5 per cent between 2009 and 2016, the number of significant operational incidents in that same period declined to just 19.4 incidents per year. Safety is just one of the many reasons why would-be vacationers may want to take to the high seas on their next getaway. • Convenience: People who want to jetset around the world don’t need a jet to do so. In fact, a cruise ship is a much more convenient way to visit multiple locales on a single trip. Cruise passengers won’t have to worry about checking in and out of multiple hotels, which also saves them the hassle of unpacking and repacking their bags several times during their trips. “Often sailing at night, river cruises are more port-centric than their larger cousins in that one can expect to spend the majority of days exploring the lands before returning to the ship to enjoy an incredible meal, relaxing evening and a more subdued social atmosphere. River cruises continue to increase in popularity and have plenty to
offer virtually every kind of traveller in every age group.â€? • Family-friendly: Many cruise lines offer cruise vacation packages that cater to families. Packages vary by cruise line, but such offerings tend to have kid-specific activities planned throughout the trip, affording parents a chance to get some alone time together. Many cruise lines even boast late-night kids’ activities, giving parents a chance to enjoy romantic dinners together. “With CruisePlus and travel partners, you’ll have the opportunity to explore lands that have enticed you and fed your yearnings for travel, exploration and knowledge.â€? • Variety: Like resorts, cruise ships come in various shapes and sizes. Some travelers may want the feel of being on a floating city, while others may want something more intimate. Many cruise lines offer both experiences and everything in between. Cruise vacations make the ideal getaways for those who want to combine R&R with the thrill of visiting exotic locales. Let us introduce you to some of the most popular and dreamt of destinations around the world as well as some of the destinations that are off the beaten path. Companionship for the Lonely
M
any of our clients have family living in the same city, but they have children of their own, two jobs, a dog and so many other extra curricular things happening in their lives. It is a breath of relief for families to have someone else provide the companionship and friendship a care aide or companion can bring to their parent. Providing a companion to sit with Bill for a couple of hours in the evening can complete his life. Like Bill told us, he has music, walks, bus rides, outings with his friend, and at least one or two activities per day, but having the extra companionship at night would complete his life. Often the senior is isolated, even in their own community. They may live in assisted living in their own apartment, however the only contact they may have with each other is at meal times. June was too weak to go to her meals for a few weeks and had her meals delivered. She said that no one just stops in to see how she is doing, and she can be days without seeing anyone.
“The days are fine — it’s the nights alone I don’t like!” says Bill, who lost his wife six months ago. “I miss Gladys, because we would watch ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and play cards after supper. Now the evenings are so quiet!” Bill has a family friend, Betsy, that takes him out during the day. He remarks, “I don’t know what I’d do without Betsy (he has three daughters). If Gladys hadn’t arranged that Betsy look out for me after she passed, I just don’t know what I would have done.” Betsy not only takes Bill to doctor appointments, but sees that his dentures are reworked so he can chew his food, picks him up for a drive when she takes her five kids on after school activities such as violin and piano lessons, and goes on long drives on sunny days. One day she told the office, “Bill’s
with me now for a gourmet lunch — hotdogs!” Because she is surrounded by children under 12, they call him Grandpa Bill, and his heart is so warmed by the attention. The senior doesn’t rely so heavily on the family to provide those same pieces of assistance, meaning that when family visit, it’s a fun time to share with children and grandchildren. Providing a companion to our lonely seniors is rewarding. Not only can we provide that companionship, but we can go shopping, to the library, visit the doctor or dentist, arrange for the garburator to be fixed, and flip the fuse that operates the stove. Care & Company: Senior Care Victoria is always looking for new staff to join our fantastic team. If you have a strong professional background and are thinking about pursuing caregiving, we offer a two-day course covering all the basics to get you started. Our next dates are April 4 and 5. Call us at: 250-382-2328 to register.

T
he globally acclaimed Shen Yun Performing Arts is returning to Vancouver once again with an all-new program, playing 10 shows at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre March 13 to 22. There will be six matinee performances, with two on weekdays — Tuesday and Thursday — which is good news for seniors because they can get the ferry discount. Return shuttle service is available from the Tsawwassen and Horseshoe Bay ferry terminals for all six matinee shows. Based in New York and comprised largely of Chinese artists living overseas, Shen Yun came into being in 2006 has expanded exponentially since then, growing from one touring company to seven-each, with its own live orchestra. During the 2020 season, the group will play in more than 100 cities across the Americas, Europe, Asia and Oceania. Shen Yun’s mission is to revive China’s authentic, divinely inspired 5,000-year-old culture through live orchestral music and dance, and bring it to audiences around the world. Each show presents a landscape of legendary characters from the Middle Kingdom’s long and storied history, lively drumming acts, grand-scale dances, vocal soloists, a full orchestra with a mix of Chinese and Western instruments, and unique animated backdrops. The story-telling is done through classical Chinese dance, an ancient art form that
enables Shen Yun to depict the myths, legends, characters and heroes from ancient China so well, such as the renowned Yellow Emperor, the great generals Yue Fei and Han Xin, Emperor Taizong of Tang, the brave heroine Hua Mulan, and the fearless Monkey King. The handmade costumes worn by performers span China’s regions, dynasties and ethnicities, and are inspired by authentic couture. According to reviews on Shen Yun’s website, audience members often remark on the colours, costumes and music, and say the show left them feeling uplifted or inspired. Here is a selection of quotes: “It’s a magical performance. In the soft moments, in the quiet moments, and the energetic moments, you really are transported. It’s really beautiful.” — Christine Cushing, Canadian celebrity chef “I always feel uplifted when I come to see the show… When I leave the show, I feel like I’m floating out — like all of the worries of the world have been taken off your shoulders and you feel like you are in a better place.” — Agnes Bristow, Canadian writer and film producer “There is a massive power in this that can embrace the world. It brings great hope… It is truly a touch of heaven.” — Daniel Herman, former Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic Shen Yun is an experience not to be missed!

There is so much that happens in the first month of the year: holiday bills, kids are back to school, snowbirds plan to travel south and it’s flu season. Maybe it is best to start new habits in February — it’s a quieter month. February is also Heart month. Perhaps the best resolution you can make to help your heart, other than getting regular exercise, is to stop smoking. Let’s looks at all the reasons to stop smoking and ways your local pharmacist can help you stop. While the number of people who smoke have been dropping steadily over the years, it is still a major health concern. Health Canada estimates that 100 Canadians die from smoking-related illnesses every day. This does not take into account health care dollars spent on cancer, heart and respiratory diseases. I had hoped to find a whole bunch of scary facts about what smoking does to your body. This was surprisingly difficult. Few stop smoking websites published this information, perhaps it is because we have heard it many times before. How can your local pharmacist help you quit smoking? You can obtain nicotine replacement therapy free of charge from your community pharmacy. The B.C. Smoking Cessation Program helps B.C. residents stop smoking. Once a year, all B.C. residents are eligible for a single, continuous 12-week course of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). You can choose from nicotine patches, gum, lozenges or the nicotine inhaler. To

obtain your NRT products, you need to ask your pharmacist if you are eligible. You must be registered with BC Pharmacare. Then fill out and sign a declaration form. That’s it. The rest is up to you. Do not be discouraged if you don’t succeed with your first attempt. Quitting smoking is extremely difficult, especially for long term smokers. With any failure, no matter what type, it is best to learn from your mistakes. Why did you start smoking again? Was it something that you saw or did that triggered your craving for nicotine. Was it availability to cigarettes? Or are some habits just hard to break? Make a note of what caused you to start smoking again and try to overcome this obstacle next time. There will be a next time, it often takes people a few attempts to successfully quit smoking. Don’t forget to visit your local pharmacy to obtain your free 12-week NRT therapy, even if you do not succeed on your first attempt. Supposing you obtain your first four weeks of NRT therapy in February and stop after four days. If you wish to restart in July, you will not be eligible for the remaining eight weeks. Remember it must be 12 weeks of continuous therapy. If you need some help with motivation, there are many great resources available. Perhaps the best is the Quitnow.ca website. There is information about how you can plan to quit smoking with concrete suggestions about how to deal with cravings and changing your habits. At this website, you can sign up for personalized coaching, receive daily supporting emails or texts. But perhaps the best motivational source is yourself. You are capable of quitting smoking, and you know it. Watch this space in the month of February for Heart Pharmacy events to help you, and your heart, stay healthy. heartpharmacy.com
moking has been linked to many different illnesses. It’s widely known that cigarette smoke can impact respiratory and cardiovascular health, but there may be a new reason to quit, particularly for those plagued by chronic inflammation. Researchers at Sweden’s Umea University, in collaboration with researchers in the United States, found that nicotine strongly activates immune cells to release DNA fibers decorated with pro-inflammatory molecules called neutrophil extracellular traps, or NETs. Continuous exposure to NETs can harm tissues and may explain why smokers are vulnerable to inflammatory diseases. NETs have been implicated in several inflammatory diseases, such as arthritis, cancer and small vessel vasculitis. This evidence presents yet another reason why people should quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke, or never begin smoking at all. — MC

Health Care vs Disease

s we age, we realize the need for self care. Our full lives can carry a lot of stress. ur healthcare resources are being pushed to their limits. Rising disease rates continue to result in increasing costs and rising doctor waiting lists. Looking at this logically, what is missing most in our health care system is health! Obesity, diabetes, cancer and other dis-eases are increasing at unprecedented rates. High calorie devitalized products drive compulsive overeating behaviour and are destroying the health of an entire generation, especially our children. Childhood nutrition has a significant impact on lifelong health. Many of the chronic diseases of adulthood have their beginnings in childhood, and if we’re serious about preventing them, we need to focus on whole food and plant-based nutrition for kids. We are eating more calories than ever, but the foods we are eating are seriously deficient in vital micro nutrients. High micro nutrient-rich whole-foods are the
way to get essential nutrients while giving us the satiation and ‘full’ feeling our body craves. In the China Study by T. Colin Campbell, Jacob Gould Schurman, Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University and Thomas M. Campbell II, a physician, examine the link between the consumption of animal products (including dairy) and chronic illnesses such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, cancers, etc. The authors conclude that people who eat a predominantly whole-food, plant-based diet, avoiding animal products as a main source of nutrition, including beef, pork, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese and milk, and reducing their intake of processed foods and refined carbohydrates, will escape, reduce, or reverse the development of numerous diseases. Our current model of healthcare has turned into a system of disease care, merely treating symptoms rather than the underlying cause of disease. And one of the key factors for good health are plant based enzymes. Many people that have
gone the plant-based lifestyle, removing excess toxins from the body and supplementing with powerful whole-food supplements, were able to eliminate their greatest health challenges — even some so-called incurable illnesses (eg. Gentleman with death-bed cancer pronounced cancer-free in 60 days.) See video on website. Enzymes must be in the body first before protein can be effective and before minerals can be utilized, we need protein, and before vitamins can be absorbed, we need minerals. This is the order of nutrients in the body. (Not all enzymes are created equal). In fact, if the supplements we consume are not designed according to The Laws of Nature, our best intentions and hard-earned dollars are being flushed away— literally! Condensed article

cells. As cellular health improves, tissues function more efficiently, leading to removal of waste products and excess fluid. Massage can also relax muscle tissue and reduce inflammation and strain. Researchers at McMaster University in Canada found that massage affects the activity of certain genes, which directly reduce inflammation in muscles — the same results that would occur if a person took pain medication.

Researchers tested people who exercised and received massages afterward against a control group, discovering that “massage dampened the activity of proteins known as ‘inflammatory cytokines’, which cause inflammation and pain. It also increased levels of proteins that signal the muscles to produce more mitochondria, the cell structures that produce energy and help muscles recover from activity.” Inner Balance Massage is a holistic studio that’s been helping

What do I do now? preparing for the task of settling an estate
Written by: Laura Van Sprang, Manager at Sands Funeral Chapel Cremation and Reception Centre (Victoria) hen a “first call” comes into the funeral home and there has been a death in the family, we are usually faced with one of these following statements: ‘We have made pre-arrangements and have things in place to move forward’, or ‘We have been through this before and have a pretty good idea of what to expect’, or ‘We have never done this before… What do I do now?’ In any of these cases, we are standing by ready to assist and guide the family through the next steps. I’d like to share some information that may help you feel a little more prepared if you should be faced with assisting in a loved one’s final arrangements or thinking about organizing your own in advance. First detail some are not aware
W
of is that Power of Attorney ends at death. The Executor of the Will would then have the authority to move forward with making arrangements. If there is no Will, we look to the Cremation, Interment and Funeral Services Act/ Control of Disposition, which lists, in order, who is legally allowed to then handle all arrangements for the disposition and funeral. The Executor or authorised Next of Kin, will need to contact a funeral home to assist you. A funeral arrangement can sometimes take a few hours depending on the services chosen and details to be discussed. An appointment should be made before heading to the funeral home, to ensure the time is set aside to answer all your questions and that your wishes can be discussed. We will be there to guide you through and always take into consideration that grief is present and needs extra patience, comfort and care.
The death certificates can be issued once the doctor has signed the medical certificate of death and the vital statistics have been obtained at the arrangement. We work under the Privacy Act so all information given is protected. The family can order as many death certificates as they need at $27 per certificate, which will be paid to Vital Statistics Office. Your funeral director will work with you and your family to create a meaningful service that will also fit into your budget. Rest assured there will be educated, compassionate professionals there to guide you, from that difficult “first call”, all the way through the arrangements and services and also set you up with valuable information and resources to prepare you for the task of settling an estate. The Passing of a Friend
A
friend of mine passed away a while ago. It was indeed sad to lose him. The beauty of his death, though, was that he and his family were ‘All Ready to Go’. His end of life paperwork, advanced care directives, will and funeral arrangements were all in place, and the surviving family members needed only to follow the plan they had created and
agreed to. There was a palpable sense of relief within the core family. Knowing the details were handled, they could allow themselves to miss him, to grieve well and not be distracted by the many decisions that death demands we make. Those decisions being made well in advanced freed family and friends to remember their deceased loved one,
getting lost in the stories they all enjoyed telling and hearing, instead of vanishing into the details. Being All Ready to Go sets the family free to reminisce, to remember and to review a life well lived. CONNECTIONS A new Saanich publication for older adults
A
s Saanich continues to implement their Parks, Recreation and Community Services Older Adult Strategy, we are excited about the latest achievement. The Older Adult Strategy has four priorities; programming continuum, collaboration, age-friendly spaces and enhance communication. Our latest goal reached is under ‘enhance communication’. When creating the strategy, we realized many older adults were unaware of the variety of low cost or drop-in opportunities that can be found in recreation centres, where centres are located, or how to get to the centres if you don’t drive. Many people viewed our recreation centres as only for the young or just for “sweat and spandex”. It was also evident that many felt our all-encompassing Active Living Guide was hard to read and navigate.
To help address this thinking, we felt we needed to create a separate magazine geared to older adults and separate from the information-heavy Active Living Guide. We wanted to create a new guide that would highlight low cost or free activities, wellness programs offered for those with health challenges such as dementia, stroke or surgery rehabilitation, as well as include information on other Saanich senior centres, clubs, resources and promote social connection opportunities. We are very proud to introduce our first edition of this new magazine, proudly named CONNECTIONS. In this new publication, you will find a listing of programs available for
free or below $30, a map of where facilities are located, details on BC Transit options on how to get to your activity and financial assistance if necessary. Drop-in sports, fitness and waterfit schedules are included but information on other seniors centres in Saanich: Saanich Silver Threads, Cordova Bay 55+, Goward House and Cedar Hill Social Club is available as well. CONNECTIONS can be found at the recreation centres, however most will be delivered directly to apartment buildings, libraries, non-profit organizations, seniors

Valentine’s Day
alentine’s Day is a celebration that many think is about the romantic kind of love. But what if we celebrate other kinds of love and think about other ways to mark the occasion, even if you are single and not in a romantic relationship! Love Others
Pay it forward. How about doing a random act of kindness and surprise someone with an unexpected gift? A card or letter or buying someone a coffee shows you care and will lift someone’s spirits. Love Thyself
Valentine’s Day is a good time for introspection and self-reflection. The love you receive is a direct correlation to the love you have for yourself. Take time to exercise self-love such as thinking of a positive phrase to say to yourself. Love thy neighbours and friends
Love isn’t just for romantics, but for non-romantics love, too! Consider planning an outing with neighbours and friends to connect and be entertained. Silver Threads Service has two special Valentine’s Day events that fit the bill. On Wednesday, Feb. 12, the
Saanich Centre is hosting the Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner event. The menu consists of garden salad, followed by stuffed roast pork loin with cranberry stuffing, and for dessert, chocolate mousse. Dinner starts at 5. Following dinner, entertainment will be provided by musical trio Steve, Sherry and Dale. Tickets are $18, and reservations are required. On Friday, Feb. 14, the Victoria Centre will hold a Valentine’s Day Tea. Enjoy tea, coffee and sweet treats while listening to local singer Bob Meikle. The tea will run from 1 to 3 p.m., and tickets are $7.35. Advance booking is required. The Saanich Centre is located at 286 Hampton Rd., call 250-382-3151 for details. The Victoria Centre is located at 2340 Richmond Rd., call 250-3884268 for info. Visit: silverthreads.ca to find out all about our organization. Senior Living Priorities
A
re you newly retired and wondering where to start with retirement living? What are your senior living priorities? First off, what is senior living? Sometimes referred to as a “retirement community” and a “seniors’ community”, these terms are used interchangeably. You may have heard terms from the past like “the home”, “the lodge”, “seniors’ home”, “nursing home”, “old-folks home” or “care home”. These old terms conjure negative institutional images and experiences, maybe from your parents or grandparents era. Senior living today honours the success of your working life and living an active, social, independent life in a beautiful environment with like-minded people — successful people like yourself to fulfill your social needs. Where do you start? What should you look for and what questions should you ask? First thing to look for is location. What city and neighbourhood would you like to live? Do you want to live near your children and grandchildren? Do you want to live in the same neighbourhood you currently live?
What amenities are in the vicinity, either walking distance, short drive or a short taxi ride? Is the location easy to drive to and from for you, your family and guests? You’ll want to look for amenities that support you for exercise, entertainment and socializing. Is it in a safe neighbourhood with a walking path, coffee shop, grocery store and pharmacy within walking distance? Next, ask what services and amenities are offered. Think about what you like to do. Does the senior community support your social, physical and intellectual activities? Is the culinary program in keeping with your lifestyle and expectations? Is there a diverse seasonal menu, and is the food appealing and nutritious? Are there appealing wine and beer choices and choices in dining environments including indoor and outdoor options? Look for an active schedule with choices that appeal to you. Is there a gym, exercise classes, music program, intellectual stimulation? Think about what fulfills you
now and what will fulfill you as you age. Will the community support an independent lifestyle; can supportive living be added as needed without having to move? Is there licenced care, including aging-in-place for end of life? Can the community accommodate you and your spouse, even if you have different activity, social and medical priorities? Is the community family friendly with programing for quality time with grandchildren? Can your friends and family join you in a comfortable, open, welcoming environment for activities, coffee, dining or a glass of beer? Ask about the building features and builder/operator reputation. Is the building wood or steel and concrete construction. Are the building features senior friendly without feeling institutional, for example, aesthetically pleasing grab bars in the bathroom, motion sensor lighting and wider doorways. Look for safety and security features like a 24 hour concierge, emergency call system and CCTV.
Asking questions about location, amenities, food, activities and building features will go a long way in helping you decide if a senior living community is for you. The Aquara development by Element Lifestyle Retirement is a harbourside community in Songhees in Vic West. Its built-in care for 65+ seniors combines maximum quality of life with support as needed. Aquara’s lifestyle continuum is attentive but not intrusive, and provides homes for active and independent seniors and for those needing greater assistance and intervention, with up to 24-hour care. Aquara is unique in Victoria for their choice of either purchasing or renting in an aging-in-place retirement community. Upon completion, Aquara will offer 47 condos, 75 rental suites and 35 care units. Now offering pre-sales and pre-leasing, the Aquara Discovery Centre is open at #110 - 645 Tyee Rd. The Aquara development site is located at Kimta and Tyee Road in Victoria, Victoria, B.C. aquara.elementlifestyleretirement.com
