A Respite Rescue at VRS Communities answered prayer. Still, I was a bit apprehensive about my new neighbours. Even though I was comparatively younger, the residents made me feel so welcomed. The people at VRS Communities understand the undeniable benefits of intergenerational friendships. My inclusion in a community with an older demographic left me with so many positive experiences and memories. It didn’t take a long stay at VRS Communities for me to realize that age truly is just a number. With each day spent in the company of my newfound friends and neighbours, whether we were

y name is Tracie. I am 52. A couple of months ago, in the midst of moving apartments, I suffered a serious car accident, which left me wheelchair bound and unable to navigate the stairs at my new home.

After spending an excruciating month in hospital, I moved into respite at a VRS Seniors Community. Although I have nothing but gratitude for the incredible medical team I left behind in the hospital, I was ready to trade my hospital bed for a more home-like environment. VRS Communities’ beautiful respite suite was an

young or old no longer mattered. I should also mention that the staff at VRS Communities are a diverse group of ages. They made me feel supported, included and seen. Social isolation and loneliness can be one of biggest contributors in the decline of seniors, and I’ve been able to see first-hand how living in a supportive community helps people stay connected. My experience at VRS Communities was enhanced by the wonderful connections I made, and my involvement in recreational activities that improved my wellbeing during a difficult time.

After more than two months of respite living at a VRS Seniors Community, I am recovered and saying farewell to my new family and friends. I am thankful to the residents and staff for so much more than the health care and support I received during my recovery. I am thankful for the friendships, the life-lessons, and a home filled with beautiful memories. I look forward to returning (albeit in a few years). The Vista, Retirement Living “Nice to Haves” Are Just T

SILVER THREADS SERVICE

CELEBRATING 65 YEARS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE

The year was 1956, and in the City of Victoria a public meeting was held to address the needs of seniors. Out of this meeting, two committees were created, one of which was the Personal Services Committee and the beginning of Silver Threads Service. With a newly formed Board, one staff member and community support, the organization set to find resources to provide such services for the “welfare of elderly people and to coordinate and stimulate community services”. Providing information, support, companionship, recreation, and a social centre were as important in the 1950’s as they are today. The Colonist Newspaper held a “Name the Agency” Contest in 1957. The winning name chosen was “Silver Threads Service,” submitted by Mrs. Ibbotson, who won $50 from Woodwards Department Store. A crest was designed by 16-year-old Victoria High School student Harold Ridgeway. The first location of Silver Threads was in Spencerhouse on Cook Street. Over the years we have operated in Esquimalt, Sidney and across the CRD with Meals on Wheels. Our longstanding relationships with the City of Victoria and the District of

Saanich continues today, with centres in both municipalities. Our centres are located in Saanich at 286 Hampton Road and in Victoria at 1911 Quadra Street. Membership gives those 55 years and better access to both centres. Today, the organization serves a wide variety of social and recreation needs of older adults, from online classes, technology training, discussion, art and writing groups to energetic Pickle ball, Zumba Gold, table tennis and fitness classes. There is something for everybody 55 years better and a variety of interests. During the month of November, Silver Threads Service will celebrate the occasion virtually. Watch for stories and posts in the Times Colonist, on Facebook and on our website. Celebrating 65 years will also be a theme in the launch of our Annual Fundraising Campaign. For more information on the 65th Celebration, call Tracy Ryan at the Victoria Centre at 250-388-4268. Source materials from Silver Threads The Centre with a Heart by Anne Holman

s Canadians we are blessed to live in such a diverse and large country. However, oftentimes exploring our own, albeit very large, backyard takes a backseat to overseas bucket list destinations. Canada certainly has an abundance of wondrous destinations worth visiting. From coast to coast, our country is bursting with charming towns, natural geographical wonders, and fascinating histories. Mile Zero Tours, a local Island-owned tour operator, knows and understands this and specializes in crafting fi rstclass guided tours from Vancouver Island to some of Canada's most breathtaking gems. One such tour, the Epic Canadian Rail Journey, is the ultimate Canadian expedition. This 16-day trip escorts travellers on a scenic rail journey across the continent, with overnights in Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. Guests witness the dramatic change in topography between provinces, from snow-capped mountains to endless prairies. The trip is complete with quintessential Canadian excursions including cruising into the mists of Niagara Falls,

admiring the views from atop Montreal’s Mount Royal and visiting the most photographed lighthouse in the world in Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia. Other fabulous Canadian highlights include: New Brunswick’s Bay of Fundy, home to the highest tides in the world; Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, a town on the edge of the Arctic Ocean; Cavendish, the picturesque seaside village that inspired Lucy Maude Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables; and Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site and geological phenomena. November is fall prevention month

hat if I told you there was a serious health crisis that many people might not be aware of. That it is the leading cause of injury-related hospitalization for older adults. That every 10 minutes this event sends an older person to the hospital, and that it is responsible for 60% of head injuries. This event must be motor vehicle accidents, right? Nope. Heart attacks or strokes? Wrong again. I too, was surprised to learn that the leading cause of hospitalization in older adults is a fall from a standing height. There is no single reason why people fall. If there was, we would of course work to prevent it. In many cases, there are multiple risk factors which can increase the risk of falling. Reducing these risk factors applies to everyone, not just seniors, however with seniors, the consequences of a fall can be more severe. Falls cause 90% of hip and wrist fractures. Let’s look at some of the easiest ways in which to prevent falls for everyone. Perhaps the easiest way to prevent falls is to have your eyes checked on a regular basis. If you have vision issues or incorrect glasses, it can make judging distances difficult. It can also make obstacles, like stairs or curbs, hard to see. So visit your eye doctor on a regular basis. Stay active. Regular exercise increases lower body strength and helps improve balance. You do not need to start jogging or swim endless laps to improve muscle strength and balance. Most community centers have low impact activities suitable for all age ranges and abilities. You can try tai-chi, chair yoga, line dancing or pole walking. The options at my nearest seniors center had at least 20 different classes to choose from. There were also classes specifically designed for fall prevention. Exercise is also social and can make you feel better, but this is just an added bonus. Make your home safer. This is the best place to think about fall prevention. Take a few moments to look around your home. Or better

is usually noticed when you get up from sitting or lying down. It can make you feel lightheaded or dizzy. Pharmacists often recommend that people on blood pressure medications stand still for five seconds when they first stand up. This way if you do feel dizzy, you can just sit back down. Never jump up and race to answer the phone or the doorbell. Wait five seconds before you start walking. November is fall prevention month in Canada. This is a good time to take a fresh look at hazards around the house. If you want to learn more, visit findingbalancebc.ca, it is a great resource for preventing falls. still, have someone else evaluate safety in your home. Here are a few ideas to increase home safety: • Ensure there is proper lighting in all areas of the home, especially around stairs • Use non-slip mats in the bathroom and on shower floors

• Consider grab-bars or tub handles in the bathroom and around the toilet • Have a night-light in areas where you walk at night • Keep pathways wide and clear of clutter • If you have pets, ensure they are not underfoot before walking Check with your Pharmacist to see if any of your medications increase your risk of a fall. Medications that lower your blood pressure might cause issues. Pharmacists often warn patients about the risk of something we call “postural hypotension.” Some medications are helpful for reducing your blood pressure, however, they can reduce your body’s ability to deliver blood when needed.
