Finding home – My Experience Joining a VRS Seniors Community By Anita Courtney, a resident of VRS Seniors Communities (which owns and operates Ross Place, Victoria, and Lakeside Gardens, Nanaimo)

M

y name is Anita Courtney and I have lived at a VRS Seniors Community for just over 2 years. I was both humbled and thrilled to be able to speak publicly about my decision to move to this community. Prior to arriving at a VRS Seniors Community, I suffered a stroke that left me unable to perform the tasks that go part and parcel with daily life. Like many

seniors, I was extremely reluctant to exchange the independent life I had for one that would now be spent in what a common stigma refers to as a “home” for the elderly. With a healthy amount of persuasion from my children, I am grateful to have found my place in a community that is, indeed, a home but it has become my home in every wonderful sense of the word! I grew up in Kelowna and gave more than 30 years of my life to a career in nursing. It was the most rewarding experience I could have ever hoped for and having worked in care, I can fully appreciate the

many moving parts of the seniors housing industry and what it takes to build and maintain a community at a seniors residence. My absolute favourite part of living here is the safety component, especially during these pandemic times. Despite Covid-19, VRS Seniors Community residents enjoy community lifestyle that allows them, from time to time, to forget about the pandemic currently wreaking havoc all around us. The management and staff are approachable and always place our needs and safety at the forefront of their agenda – this is our home,

and they truly provide the services that make us feel special. Parks during the Pandemic: A Perfect Project My husband and I had expected in retirement to travel to many international destinations and had made extensive plans for 2020 and 2021. We were disappointed to cancel our itinerary due to the pandemic. What to do? We discovered a brochure from Saanich Parks listing 157 of the 170 municipal parks. On February 3, 2021 we set out to visit the parks and concluded our excursions on April 6, 2021. The District of Saanich surprised us. The numerous parks are of such variety and size. Sports facilities, historical landmarks, children’s playgrounds, and artwork are all beautifully maintained. There

are self-guided walking tours and numerous trails which link the parks. Importantly, there are well managed indoor recreational facilities. When we concluded all of the Saanich municipal parks, the pandemic sadly had not concluded. We then embarked on visiting other municipal parks located in Oak Bay, Victoria, Sidney and look forward to visiting all the CRD Parks. How beautiful. We were amazed to see how well the parks were maintained by each municipality and learned that volunteers organize to be of assistance. The benches, in all of the

municipalities are a joy to offer remembrance of similar folks who treasured their retirement days. One memorable bench dedication said “we lived, we loved, we laughed and we left”. On our outing to Margaret Wright Park we met Vicki Saunders - a former Saanich councilor. She shared the history of her parents Stan and Margaret Wright who lived on that property which she still enjoys. Brydon Park was named for the first mayor of Saanich (1906). Additionally McMorran Park and Bruce Hutchinson Park honours distinguished citizens. We have experienced the best of a pandemic lock-down which has induced us to enjoy our neigh-

bourhood. We have achieved our goals to get our exercise in a land of beauty, learn new skills and meet very nice people accomplishing the same objectives. - The Jackson’s August 31, 2021

ovid has upended all of our lives in ways we didn’t expect to happen, and didn’t expect to last this long. The covid vaccine has been front page news for months now. But there is another vaccine, an old pro, that we want to talk about today: the flu vaccine. There are actually many ways that the covid pandemic affects how to think about flu season and getting vaccinated against the flu. I’m sure many of us feel like amateur epidemiologists at this point, but here’s a refresher on influenza: it’s a virus that we consider to be endemic, meaning it is always present in our population at some level, though during “flu season” which typically runs from October through March, the number of cases increase. The number of cases of flu (as well as many other viral infections- including covid) increase during wintertime as people gather indoors, reducing the ability to social distance, while also spending longer periods of time in indoor spaces with less ventilation. Every year people are encouraged to get the flu vaccine to prevent getting seriously ill from the flu. The reason you need to get vaccinated every year is because just like covid, when the virus is able to infect a high number of people, it is able to mutate. And so by the time the next flu season comes around, the flu virus has already mutated and the flu vaccine must be updated to reflect these mutations in order to continue offering protection against the newest form of influenza. Heart Pharmacy administered over 3000 doses of the flu vaccine just during the first two months of the 2020 flu season!

An Old Pro: The Flu Vaccine This year, we expect an even higher demand for the flu vaccine, and so we’d like to share what we can expect the process to look like this year. Firstly, you will be required to book an appointment to receive your flu shot; this ensures we can meet all covid screening, social distancing, and sanitization protocols. Heart Pharmacy will have an online booking system to help you schedule your vaccine appointment. Visit HeartPharmacy.com where you can sign up for flu vaccine updates. The publicly funded flu vaccine is the most common type of flu vaccine, and the one you’ve likely received in the past. We expect supply for this vaccine to start arriving in mid-October, but are awaiting confirmation from Island Health (VIHA) on exact dates. Supply arrives on a rolling basis, and we will be sending booking availabilities as we receive our doses. If you receive an email to book an appointment but are unable to find a time slot that works for you, do not be discouraged as we will make more time slots available when we receive our next supply delivery. We also offer a private-pay, high-dose flu vaccine for people 65+ called Fluzone. It contains four times the amount of antigen as the regular publicly funded flu vaccine. Antigens are what your body recognizes as a foreign invader and thus creates antibodies to protect against these foreign antigen invaders. By having more antigens in this vaccine, your immune system will create more antibodies to offer even greater protection against the flu. This does mean, that because

your immune system is recognizing a greater number of foreign antigens and creating a stronger immune response to the vaccine, you may feel more side effects that mimic mild symptoms of the flu, including muscle aches, a mild fever, or soreness at injection site. If you are interested in receiving a high dose flu vaccine, please call one of our pharmacy locations. For children and youth ages 2-17, we will have a small supply of FluMist vaccines - which are administered by a nasal spray, and are publicly funded for those who qualify. Now, it may sound more convenient to give the little ones a nasal spray versus an injection, but from our experience, for some

kids the nasal spray can be more unpleasant than a quick jab. We have yet to receive official word from Public Health on how many doses we will receive and when. Children aged 5+ can receive the flu vaccine via injection at the pharmacy, and it just may make the most sense for your family to have everyone get the injection type. On the day of your appointment we ask that you complete your consent form online before arriving at our store, wearing clothing that provides easy access to the shoulder. As with all vaccines, we ask you remain onsite for 15 minutes after you receive your vaccine to ensure there are no adverse reactions. You can expect to be at our location for a

total of about 30 minutes or less. If you have any questions about vaccines, or other health matters, speak with your Heart Pharmacist or your family physician; another excellent source of information about vaccines is the Immunize BC website (immunizebc.ca). Yearly flu vaccines are an easy step to maintain your health over the winter and have one less worry on your already busy plate. To be notified when flu vaccine appointments are available for booking, visit HeartPharmacy. com and sign up for flu vaccine notifications. Take care & be well. Brought to you by your friendly Heart Pharmacy Pharmacist

Yoga Class vs. Yoga Therapy Session

A

ll of yoga is potentially therapeutic. Yoga Therapy specifically applies yogic tools—postures, breathwork, meditation, and more to address an individual’s needs— physically, mentally, emotionally, & even spiritually. A certified yoga therapist has at least 1000 hours of training. The sessions are tailored to the specific concerns and goals of the client. The individual is empowered with choices to enhance their wellbeing. In contrast, general yoga classes offer instructions on yoga technique in a group setting. They are generally focused on the physical body and offer limited individual adaptations. Yoga teachers have a minimum of 200 hours of training. If you are uncertain about trying yoga, you may appreciate the expertise and individualized attention offered by yoga therapists. samanthalaurayoga.com
