Tonight, the Belfry Theatre launches its new season with Kat Sandler’s hit comedy thriller YAGA. YAGA was nominated for the 2020 Dora Award for Best Play.
YAGA is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between Indigenous and Ukrainian artists —a celebration of two unique worlds and cultures.
With Baba Yaga, the mythical mistress of magic, as our guide, we enter a world of murder and sex and romance, where nothing —and no one—is exactly as it seems.
As a special treat this November, we are tuning up and digging into the glorious music of this country’s best-loved icon. I Think I’m Fallin’: The Songs of Joni Mitchell returns to the Belfry after a record-breaking run in 2016.
In December, we welcome A WONDERHEADS Christmas Carol to the Belfry. This astonishing production features glowing ghosts, 10-foot-tall puppets, and not a word of dialogue. There are lots of treats in store for audiences as they are whisked away with Ebenezer Scrooge on his magical Christmas Eve adventure. Prepare to laugh, cry, and be utterly enchanted this holiday season!
The new year starts with our tradition of producing new work, Christine Quintana’s As Above combines elements from “The Secret Life of Trees” with the challenges facing a disgraced professor, as she opens herself to romance and a mysterious connection with her estranged daughter.
The season is capped off in April with a
monumental piece of theatre: the internationally acclaimed The Lehman Trilogy—winner of the 2022 Tony Award for Best Play. The history of the Lehmans, starting with their arrival as immigrants, charts the evolution of American capitalism. This stunningly theatrical production follows that journey - from rags-
to-riches - from 1844 to the cataclysmic events of 2008.
The Belfry is offering pay-whatyou-want prices on all tickets this season. All these productions are on sale now. To book, or for more information, give us a call at 250-385-6815 or visit belfry.bc.ca .

Twenty- ve years ago Janis Dunning and Jacques Lemay started the Canadian College of Performing Arts tucked away in Oak Bay, Victoria, BC. Today, the college has been named a Top Acting School in Canada by Casting Workbook, and alumni have gone on to be successful performers, creators, teachers, administrators, and activists; many of whom are being featured across Canada, on Broadway, and on the West End.
This year, in celebration of 25 years, CCPA has launched an exciting season of plays and musical theatre. In addition to several concerts and cabarets, CCPA’s 2023/24 subscription season comprises ve awardwinning productions.
The anniversary year kicks off a little ironically with an absurd and imaginative trippy political
satire of young people, forced to navigate the chaotic state of the world at one of the worst schools in history. The Weight of Ants, by David Paquet and translated by Leanne Brodie. CCPA holds the distinction of presenting the English language premier of this 2023 Governor General’s award winner for French drama in October. Lenin’s Embalmers by Vern Thiessen follows at the end of November. A gripping, hilarious, and somewhat timely
play about a Russian dictator who wants to live forever. This December the Broadway hit Peter and the Starcatcher spins the tale of how young Peter becomes the legendary Pan. Brimming with orphans, pirates, and the magic of fallen stars it will set the tone for the holidays. The multiple Tony Award winning Canadian hit The Drowsy Chaperone, a hilarious musical farce blending nostalgia with a contemporary air, will dazzle audiences with showstopping song and dance numbers in February 2024. The highly
anticipated Year-End Musical draws links to the College’s roots during co-founders’ Janis Dunning and Jacque Lemay’s time in Charlottetown, bringing the beloved East coast classic, Anne of Green Gables - The Musical to Vancouver Island. Performed at the McPherson Playhouse in April, this marks the rst time the Year-End Musical will be led entirely by Alumni. Managing Artistic Director, Caleb Marshall is proud of the talented network of Alumni, “It’s a mark of an institution’s

The wonderfully sunny Gloria will transport listeners to 18th century Venice, a remarkably enlightened citystate, and to the height of the Italian Baroque tradition. With its distinctive, lively and exquisite melodies and rhythms, Gloria remains in popular demand today. Movements have been adapted and used in a number of lms such as Shine (1996) about pianist David Helfgott, and The Hunter (2011).

The Victoria Philharmonic Choir’s 19th concert season dances through the Baroque and late Renaissance eras, with a more sombre detour into post-war France.
Directed by Peter Butter eld, the 80+ member choir gets an early start on the twelve feast days of Christmas with a November 18 performance of four of the cantatas in J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, with orchestra and soloists, at First Metropolitan United Church.
Beginning with the birth of Jesus and encountering shepherds and the three Magi, this musical setting of the Nativity story is Bach at his joyous best.
Next, the VPC is delighted to join the Victoria Symphony as guest choir for two performances of that perennial favourite, Handel’s Messiah, December 15 and 17 at UVic’s Farquhar Auditorium. And for many, Christmas preparations wouldn’t be complete without the choir’s annual carol sing-along concert at St. Mary’s Oak Bay. Maurice Duru é composed his Requiem at the end of WW2, weaving the Latin text, and melodies of 800-yearold Gregorian chant, into sophisticated French harmonies, which will be beautifully expressed on Christ Church
Cathedral’s Wolff organ, in March 2024.
Finally, in June, the VPC calls in the sackbuts, cornetti and lutes for a return of a chorister and audience favourite: Claudio Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespers. It’s the largest and most complex choral work composed before Bach’s time, and a rare treat for lovers of Renaissance polyphony and the unusual vocal techniques of Monteverdi’s era. Visit vpchoir.ca for details and ticket information. Tickets to Handel’s Messiah are available from the Victoria Symphony box of ce.
With this upcoming concert season, the Civic Orchestra of Victoria will celebrate its 40th anniversary as one of the region’s foremost community ensembles. For four decades, the COV has nurtured and supported local musicians interested in broadening their skills and musical repertoire. In turn, members of the orchestra have donated their time and enthusiasm to bring fantastic classical music to audiences in Victoria and beyond. Made up almost entirely of volunteers, the Orchestra is dedicated to giving back to the communities that have supported and encouraged forty years of musical expression and exploration.
Founded in 1983 by Charles Barber, the Orchestra has played under the baton of many directors over the years, including Stuart Knussen, Robert Cooper, János Sándor, Jean Marie Kent, George Corwin, Brian Wismath, and, most recently, Nathan Jacklin. Among many other accomplishments, the Orchestra has established the annual SingAlong Messiah, a long-running holiday tradition in which the audience becomes the choir for Handel’s famous and beloved piece (though non-singers are welcome as well!).
For this anniversary season, the Orchestra has planned a series of concerts lled with challenging and exciting music. The rst, “A Night in Vienna,” takes audiences on an Austrian tour under the direction of Michael Klazek, who will lead the ensemble in the overture to Franz von Suppé’s Pique Dame or The Queen of Spades, Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 2, and Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, featuring the talented Mary Backun, principal clarinetist with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, as soloist.
Following the Sing-Along Messiah in December, the Orchestra will perform a third concert whose program will remain a mystery for now. This will be an opportunity to introduce a new guest conductor to the local arts scene, and audiences can rest assured that they’re in for a treat.
For the Orchestra’s fourth and nal concert of the season, guest conductor Yariv Aloni has selected a trio of works: the overture to Otto Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, Aram Khachaturian’s Masquerade Suite, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2. It promises to be a thrilling end to this anniversary season.

extraordinary event is set to take place on Monday, November 13, promising soul stirring melodies and lyrics that are sure to captivate the hearts of music lovers.

Ray Wylie Hubbard: When F. Scott Fitzgerald issued his classic conclusion that ‘There are no second acts in American lives,’ he failed to envision the career
of legendary Texas troubadour
Ray Wylie Hubbard. A willing conspirator in the late seventies Cosmic Cowboy revolt that ushered in the mythical Outlaw era, Hubbard was a catalyst in the cultural upheaval that led to the peaceful coexistence of Lone Star music enthusiasts who comprised each end of the social and political spectrum of that troubled time. In the stellar company of iconic colleagues like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Doug Sahm and Jerry Jeff Walker, Ray Wylie Hubbard was an architect of the musical legacy that continues to inspire subsequent generations of up-and-coming Texas talent.
Hayes Carll: The country simplicity that imbues Hayes Carll’s songs can sometimes hide the social conscience and sharp humor that also runs through them, but if you want to find those things, they are there. In fact, Carll has spent over 20 years having a conversation about what it is we’re all doing here with anyone who will listen. He makes us laugh––but then he makes us cry. We judge a song’s protagonist, only for Carll to spin us around to commiserate with them.
James McMurtry: An outspoken wordsmith who has stepped out from under his father,
Larry McMurtry’s shadow. In James McMurtry’s new effort, The Horses and the Hounds, the acclaimed songwriter backs personal narratives with effortless elegance and endless energy This first collection in seven years, on New West Records, spotlights a seasoned tunesmith in peak form as he turns toward reflection and revelation. Familiar foundations guide the journey. These three troubadours together in one evening make this concert a rare opportunity for all music lovers.
Tickets are available Sept 22 Royal Theatre.
