Don’t fall for Scams! Mother Computers offers tips for staying safe on social media

S

ocial media has become an integral part of our lives, especially for those looking to stay connected with friends and family. However, with the increasing use of social media, there are also risks of online scams, identity theft, and cyberbullying. HERE ARE OUR TOP TIPS FOR USING SOCIAL MEDIA SAFELY: 1. Be cautious when accepting friend requests. Scammers often create fake profi les to trick people into sharing personal information or money. They can sometimes use pictures of people you know or look familiar to you. Therefore, it’s essential to verify the authenticity of the person before accepting the friend request.

2. Use privacy settings. Keeping personal information private is very important. By setting your privacy settings to a higher level, you can prevent strangers from accessing your personal information, protect against fraud and identity theft. If unsure how to do this, Mother Computers can help. 3. Use strong and unique passwords. Seniors should use strong and unique passwords for their social media accounts. It’s also important to use different passwords for different accounts. This way, if one account is hacked, the other accounts will still be safe. Always have a back up recovery email and/or phone number attached to each social media account in case the password is lost or forgotten.

4. Be very careful when clicking on links. The links might look legitimate but it’s one of the most common ways to get scammed. Something as innocent-looking as entering a contest, downloading a recipe, or accepting a free giveaway can often be a scam. When in doubt, reach out to a tech expert at Mother Computers before clicking. For more than 20 years, Mother Computers’ friendly staff has been trusted in empowering residents of Victoria, of all ages, with the knowledge and tools they need to safely and confidently use technology. No matter your computer experience level, Mother Computers offers one-on-one sit-downs where you can learn new skills. Call today at 250-479-8561 and book an inhome or in-store appointment at our Knowledge Desk. mothercomputers.com

Audiology is so much more than hearing aids

M

ost people think of an audiologist as someone who tests hearing and fits hearing aids. That’s part of the role, but there is so much more that an audiologist can do for you. Audiologists at Hear Inc. are trained to identify and treat hearing loss, tinnitus, processing disorders and vestibular (balance/dizziness) problems for people of all ages. Our holistic approach starts with a thorough diagnostic assessment. The auditory system can be compromised by something as simple as excess wax in the ear canal or as complex as a tumor on the nerve leading from the inner ear to the brain. Based on the concerns an individual reports during the initial consultation, an appropriate test battery is determined and completed. These tests generally include basic audiometry (determining the softest levels of sound that can be detected), tympanometry (assessment of middle ear function), and speech discrimination (ability to recognize words). From there, more targeted tests are completed to assess each patient’s unique set of issues and recommendations are made for medical and/or audiological follow up. Audiological follow up may involve wax removal, hearing conservation, tinnitus management, vestibular assessment, Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) therapy, or hearing aids.

Tinnitus is ringing, buzzing, whistling, or other sounds in the ears without an external source. If tinnitus is disrupting sleep, affecting a person’s work and social life, or putting them at risk of depression or anxiety, tinnitus therapy may be recommended. At Hear Inc. we complete a thorough assessment of the auditory system, including ultra-high frequency testing and diagnostic Otoacoustic Emissions (OAD), and determine the best course of treatment from there. We use our eyes, ears and brain to help maintain our balance. Damage or disease can cause disorders in this system leading to dizziness, nausea, vertigo, balance issues and lightheadedness. At Hear Inc. we use Videonystagmography (VNG) to identify what portion of the balance system is damaged, leading to more targeted treatment. APDs affect the way the brain interprets information the ear hears. If someone reports problems understanding speech, especially in complex environments, but their basic audiometric testing is normal, we will recommend a battery of tests to determine if an APD exists. If so, there are therapies that can be initiated, often with very positive results. Call Hear Inc. at 778-351-1145 to schedule your evaluation with one of our highly trained audiologists.

f you are moving to a retirement home, you might be faced with the exciting, but daunting task, of designing your new space. This new home will be where you spend your golden years, so it’s important to make it comfortable and practical for your needs. Here are some tips to help you in the process:

HAYLEY ZUMKELLER PHOTOGRAPHY

DOWNSIZE BEFORE YOUR MOVE • Before you move, it’s important to decide what items you really need in your new home. Start by taking inventory of your current possessions. • Keep the things that are important to you and consider donating or selling items that won’t fit in your new space, or that you don’t plan on using in the future. Downsizing will not only save you money on moving costs but also help declutter your life!

MAXIMIZE YOUR SPACE • Maximizing space is essential when designing your retirement home. Many retirees choose to downsize their homes to save on utility costs, but there are plenty of ways to make the most of your space. • Maximizing storage space can go a long way in making your home feel more spacious. You can add storage options in less-used areas around the suite, such as movable cabinets or shelving. • Using multipurpose furniture like a sofa bed or storage ottoman can also help to maximize your space. By using every inch of your home, you’ll be able to enjoy all the comforts of a more spacious suite. • As a bonus, keeping things decluttered and open can also make it safer for those with mobility issues to get around. PERSONALIZE YOUR SPACE • Making your retirement home your own! Incorporating elements that reflect your personality and style, such as your favourite colour on the walls, unique artwork or photographs, or custom furniture, can help make your new space feel even more like home.

HAYLEY ZUMKELLER PHOTOGRAPHY

• Think about adding elements that inspire you, such as a reading nook or a meditation corner to make your space an even better reflection of who you are and what you need. • Most importantly, these unique touches will make the space more personal to you. • It’s not uncommon to feel both excited and overwhelmed during the moving process. Just remember: with a little planning and creativity, you can create a space that is functional, stylish, and true to you!

Gone but not forgotten

O

By: Laura Van Sprang is the manager of Sands Funeral Chapel of Victoria.

ne of the most rewarding things about being a funeral director is the privilege of meeting so many amazing people. When a family chooses our funeral home to assist them, they are usually pleasantly surprised with the connection that is made with their funeral director and team of funeral professionals. The directors know it’s going to happen, because it usually does and we look forward to it. But I’m going to let you in on a little secret… it is not only the families we serve that impact our lives; it is also those who have passed away. I have been personally inspired by so many people who are no longer with us. I did not know them, they did not know me and they will never know they made a difference in my life, but they did and they do. I can recount numerous occasions, sitting around the arrangement table with a grieving

family, listening intently to the incredible stories of a recently deceased family member. Hearing of their triumphs and tribulations, academic and professional successes, what they did for their family, their community, if they wrote, painted, invented, played a musical instrument, and the list goes on. I love the way people speak with such pride about their loved ones, it is truly a part of the healing, and we appreciate that they share this with us.

I’ll share a memory I have of a woman who was entrusted into our care after her passing. She was a very tiny lady who was almost 100 years old, and I envisioned her life as being calm and peaceful: just as she looked. Then, her adult children arrived to make the arrangements. Well, as it turned out, this tiny lady was only small in stature, but big in heart, integrity and determination. Widowed at an early age and left with three very young children to raise on her own, this single

FALL AND WINTER

mom who did not speak English, decided to move them all to Canada for a better life. Upon arrival she learned the language, worked hard, and persevered for her family. I was now sitting across from her children: a doctor, an engineer and a teacher, all who attributed their success to the tiny lady in our care. I was overcome with emotion and completely inspired by their story, their pride and especially, their mom.

Even something as simple as a zip-up robe can have an impact. When a daughter brought in a robe to have her mother dressed in for their fi nal goodbye, she said, “It’s not fancy, but it was her favourite.” I thought, a zip-up robe? I love it! The ties on my own robe were always coming undone and getting in the way. Not only do I now own a zip-up robe, but I bought one for my mom as well, and she loves it too! I was totally inspired by someone who is no longer here. I shared the news of my purchase with that family, and the grandson, who had bought the robe for his grandmother, thought that was pretty special. So, if you ever wonder if you will make a difference in this world once you’re gone, I promise that you will. Our legacies truly do live on through those left living; who tell our stories and proudly go on about who we were and what we did. And you never know what impact you may have or inspiration you may be to someone you never had the chance to meet. One day we will all be gone, but not forgotten.

Radiation and implants Ask The Dentist! by Dr. C Ross Crapo DDS

Q: Dear Dr. Crapo: Twenty years ago, I developed a lump under my jaw. I went through the tests and it was discovered to be a lymph node cancer. I went through surgery, chemo, and what seemed to me massive radiation. Today I’m alive and healthy, but over the years following the treatments I lost a lot of my saliva capacity and suffer from dry mouth. In that time, my teeth have been lost. We’ve tried to save them, but the decay was so aggressive that the dentist couldn’t keep up with it. The decay got into the nerves, then I needed root canals, and then crowns. It was the only way to keep teeth in my mouth. But then I started having decay below the edge of the crowns and the dentist would try to fi x that. No matter what was tried I’d get decay, so now I’ve got a mouth of sharp shards sticking out of my gums. I asked about implants; in fact I’ve had an implant in the front of my mouth that has worked but he said that the bone that received all that radiation may not be strong enough or healthy enough to take the implants. He said it’s mostly the back of my jaws that were affected, so I don’t really know if something can be done with implants for the front part of both my upper and lower jaws. A: Extensive radiation to any part of the body produces adverse effects. Large amounts of radiation to the head and neck may well produce permanent damage that results in pain, extreme dryness to the mouth, speech impairment, rampant decay,

and deterioration of the bone that supports teeth. It compromises the body’s capacity to heal – present and future. Can the body come back over time? In some cases, yes to a certain degree. In your case, you may have not received near the exposure in the front of your mouth. The fact that you’ve had a successful implant is a good sign. When reconstructions are done so that your bad teeth are removed and new bridgework inserted on the same day, the implants are placed in the area just behind the eyeteeth in such a way that the

attachments supporting the bridgework may be sitting two teeth back. It is designed this way because this is generally where the best bone is. The teeth you receive on the surgical day are put in place until the bone heals to the implants. When healing is complete a very strong titanium bar is constructed to ensure the bridgework can support a full set of teeth. You may fi nd this a very workable solution. If we can help, we’d like to. Call 778-410-2080 for a consultation. Based on actual patient cases.

A gourmet meal in the Palm Dining Room with your new friends doesn’t disappoint; after all, the cuisine is prepared by a Red Seal chef Paul Clark. Over some laughter and engaging conversation, you tuck into the weekly feature, braised lamb shanks, herb barley risotto, and sugar glazed carrots. “The dining room staff call us by name, and accommodate our likes and dislikes,” says Barb Studer, resident at The Vista, “and it’s only been two weeks!” “We’ve also danced to some live entertainment in the Fred and Ginger Lounge.” It all sounds like the makings of a five-star resort worthy of a premier vacation destination. As we age and begin to lose our mobility and sense of balance, bathing can not only become difficult but also a cause of additional stress and anxiety. Fear of falling and a fear of not being able to get out of the tub are two of the most common occurrences with many of our seniors today. Walk-in tubs have become extremely popular in the last decade and estimates show that people who go ahead and install a walk-in tub in their homes today, will be able to live independently for an additional five years. Walk-in tubs are exactly what the name implies, tubs that have large doors that open, and you simply walk in and sit down on a 17-inch-high seat. You close and lock the door and the tub fills rapidly while you are sitting comfortably and safely inside. All the taps and controls are easily accessible at your fingertips. Once you are done your bath, tum the dial and the tub quickly drains and you simply open the door and walk out of the tub. The various models all have numerous grab bars and nonslip surfaces making getting in and out worry free. Walkin tubs are designed for an aging population who desire to remain

independent for many years to come. Manufacturers have optional tub designs accommodating every shape and size of person and bathroom. There is a tub size that will fit in the space where your existing tub or shower is. Walk-in tubs can be as basic as a soaker tub to as deluxe as your own personal spa. Offering numerous options such as heated back, multispeed warm air jets, water jets, ozone, light therapy, aromatherapy, and more. The benefits of a walk-in tub are numerous. Many people crave being able to confidently have a bath again and find relief by just soaking in a warm tub. Owners say they believe they sleep better after a soothing bath. The warm air or water jets give a deep massage and help to stimulate circulation, thus carrying additional healing oxygen throughout the body to the hands and feet. This has shown positive results increasing mobility and helping to relieve the pain and symptoms of such conditions as arthritis, chronic back pain, fibromyalgia, diabetic and peripheral neuropathy, as well as various other acute and chronic conditions. The Canadian Government website

Perhaps, one of the best decisions I’ve made is when I decided to go ahead and put a walkin tub in my house. I no longer have a fear of falling and this will help me live in my home for many more years to come.” Jean S.

states that 1 in 4 seniors fall every year, and 25% of these falls are serious, leaving the victims permanently disabled and bedridden. A large

percentage of these falls take place in the bathroom. Aside from all the pain and suffering it also ends up costing the Canadian medical system two

billion dollars annually. Therefore, the British Columbia and Federal Governments are helping many people who decide to purchase a walk-in tub now. The help comes in the forms of a tax credit, a Provincial Sales Tax waiver, and in certain qualifying cases a $7,500.00 Government Grant. As we all age and the years fly by, many seniors are faced with the reality that taking proactive steps today and deciding to retrofit their homes with a walk-in tub is one of the best investments they can make to help them age in place, comfortably and independently in the home they love. g Sponsored content provided by Island Walk-in Tubs.

Senior driving education vs. assessment

M

any geriatric researchers presenting at safety conferences agree that education, not testing, is the answer to seniors driving longer and safer. Prior to intervention by family, government, medical personnel or police, seniors should take charge of their driving situation. It is best to prepare for an impending driver assessment well ahead of time. It will relieve the stress of the unknown and the arrival of the dreaded letter. Seniors should be proactive, not reactive, when it comes to all sorts of things, particularly as it pertains to driving. Many people believe seniors have a higher-than-normal crash frequency. This is not true. They do have a much higher chance of injury in a crash because of the frailty brought on by advanced age, particularly those over 75 years of age. Two presenters at a DSAA conference made a very strong case that senior-driver harassment by governing bodies exists throughout North America. The most common crashes listed in order of frequency and cause of injury are:

• The left turn at intersections, crossing multiple oncoming lanes of traffic, causes injury for all drivers. This type of crash is often due to declining depth perception in seniors and lack of experience in teens. • The fact that oncoming vehicle drivers could change to the outside through-lane at an intersection, without warning, and be hidden behind the inside lane of two lanes approaching, was also a factor. For both seniors with slower reaction times and teens lack of experience, lack of scanning contributes to this crash. • Rear end crashes are very common. This is caused by all drivers not understanding time and distance for stopping. Understanding the consequences of tailgating is a lesson to be learned by all. Again, seniors are more likely to experience more injury than a teen. Joan Wallace Driving School offers a free seminar for seniors at 2:00 pm every fourth Wednesday monthly. Elevate your space: 3 must-have faucets for modern bathrooms From function and fit to fabulous finishes, these options have it all

T

here’s no question—your bathroom is your sanctuary. Of course, it should also function for each family member, as well as your guests, with an equal balance of comfort and beauty. If you’re looking to remodel or refresh your design, small changes can often make a big difference. Classic sink faucets can do just that. It’s not a stretch to say chrome’s headlock on bathroom hardware has eased considerably over the years, and there are now many finishes to complete your bathroom look.

FAUCET FINISHES Today, matte black remains popular and is often a front runner for designers and homeowners alike. It’s frequently a go-to for its ability to transform a bathroom into a timeless contemporary design. “Matte black really stands out against lighter coloured bathrooms,” says Adam Young, marketing coordinator, with Splashes Bath & Kitchen, Victoria, B.C. “A lot of bathroom renovations are created with a neutral colour palette and complement matte black nicely.” “The texture is between glossy and flat, which reflects relatively little light,” he adds. “That resonates with a lot of our customers because it makes a strong statement that will maintain its design appeal for years to come.”

Your choice will depend on the type of sink you have, whether you’re retrofitting your existing sink or if you’re purchasing a new one, and how many faucet openings it has. The most common faucet mounts are widespread and centerset faucets. American Standard provides three distinctive options with their Townsend collection, influenced by the fortified architecture of the Manhattan Bridge. 1. The Townsend™ 8-inch Widespread Bathroom Faucet with two lever handles (model: 7353801.243), is an artisanal tapered design with a higharc spout for increased functionality and convenience.

FAUCET STYLES

“This is ideal for a luxurious bathroom with a larger sink,” says Young. “It provides more clearance above the sink for hand washing, or even rinsing your hair. You also have a bit more temperature control with the double handles.” Lou, a recent customer, gave a five-star review, and commented on the “classy, clean look.” It’s a “very sleek, smooth looking 8” faucet. Goes great with my white quartz bathroom vanity.”

When you’re looking to outfit your sink with the perfect faucet set for your needs, whatever you choose, you want a faucet that is properly sized, complements your bathroom’s design aesthetic, provides ease-of-use, and gives the best performance that aligns with your budget.

2. The Townsend™ 8-inch Widespread Bathroom Faucet with two lever handles (model: 7353841.243), was designed with visually appealing tapered edges and stylistic elements, clean lines and elongated spout, with low splash. “All three models have the lifetime drip-

free guarantee,” notes Young, “as well as they’re WaterSense® Certified and meet all ANSI/ASME low consumption, water conservation requirements.” “The maximum flow rate of 1.2 gallons per minute helps save water, without sacrificing performance.” 3. Townsend™ Single Hole SingleHandle Bathroom Faucet (model: 7353101.243), includes an adjustable hot limit safety stop that helps to prevent accidental scalding by limiting the amount of hot water allowed to mix with the cold. “This faucet is a great option for smaller sinks, perhaps the powder room with a pedestal sink,” says Young. “It functions seamlessly with a single-handed movement.” “Splashes Bath & Kitchen has all your renovation and new-build needs, and you can order directly from our new e-commerce site, Splashes.com.” Consult a Splashes Bath & Kitchen expert to learn more about American Standard’s Townsend faucet collection for your fixture needs. Avoid ER visits with a simple home safety audit

ith hospital emergency room visit wait times getting longer, we want to do everything in our power to keep our loved ones safe at home. Since an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, hiring a handyman to help with a few simple home safety upgrades might be the best money you spend this fall. If you have an aging loved one living in their own home, this is an excellent time to conduct a simple, but essential, home-safety audit. Begin today by scheduling a time with your loved one to go through their home together. When the date arrives, consider taking over some fall flowers or fresh pumpkin bread to help create a festive mood and ensure your loved one feels extra cared as they head into the winter season. Have a notepad and your smartphone handy to document any issues you detect; from the easy fi xes to tasks that may require professional assistance. Start by

asking your loved one about any concerns that already come to mind. Knowing how busy their children are, it’s common for aging parents to avoid bringing up small concerns or projects that may interfere with your weekend plans. Asking for help can be challenging, which is why conducting a home safety audit together is so important. Small repairs or improvements left undone may lead to significant, and most importantly, preventable falls or accidents. Be sure to make a thorough tour of the home. Document every issue no matter how big or small. Keep in mind that just because something needs to get done, it doesn’t need to be done by you. Not handy with the tools? Plan to do yourself and your loved one a favour: hire someone who is. While installing a shower assist bar may seem like a minor project, a faulty installation could lead to falls or injuries. If left undone due to a busy schedule, a non-existent assist bar

could mean your loved one will be relying on inadequate towel bars or slippery counter surfaces causing the simple act of bathing to become a dangerous activity. On your safety audit tour, give special attention to entryways, kitchens, bathrooms and stairways. Note where loose rugs should be removed, poor lighting could be upgraded with a new fi xture or where handrails could easily prevent a fall. Trusted help with minor home projects can be notoriously hard to fi nd on the Peninsula and in Greater Victoria these days but know that you don’t have to go it alone. Reach out to a home care provider to ask if they have someone on staff who can assist with your simple, but essential home safety upgrades. The value of an ounce of prevention rises dramatically as our loved ones age. If you had the help of a qualified professional, what would be the fi rst safety improvement you would make in your loved one’s home?
