BLACK FRIDAY NOVEMBER 26, 2019
The history of Black Friday “BLACK FRIDAY” The term “Black Friday” was originally associated with gold prices and manipulation on the part of speculators Jay Gould and James Fisk. This scandal occurred in September 1869. Commodity prices plummeted 50 percent as a result, and the term “Black Friday” was coined to refer to that drop. The phrase “Black Friday” also became famous for all the wrong reasons in 1966. Philadelphia police used it to refer to the Friday traffic jams and crowding in downtown stores from tourists and shoppers who flooded into the city in advance of the ArmyNavy football game held the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. Bigger crowds and rowdiness contributed to long hours and stressful shifts for local police. BLACK FRIDAY REINVENTED The retail industry started using the term “Black Friday” in the late 1980s. Spin doctors turned previously negative connotations into positive ones by associating the phrase
with stores turning a profit and moving accounting ledgers from “red to black” thanks to big year-end sales. Retailers and consumers rallied around low-cost “doorbusters” and other discounted prices. Interestingly enough, according to the National Retail Federation, Black Friday really hasn’t been the most lucrative day for retailers over the years. In fact, greater profits and larger crowds are often seen on the last Saturday preceeding Christmas. SHOPPING WEEKEND EVOLVES While Black Friday may have been the catalyst, in recent years shoppers have made the entire weekend of Black Friday a lucrative one for retailers. Many stores now open on Thanksgiving and extend sales through the entire weekend. Small Business Saturday and Sunday promote patronizing mom-and-pop stores. Cyber Monday emerged when online shopping became a popular way to grab deals, and it marks the close of the opening weekend of the holiday shopping season. In 2017, Black Friday weekend attracted 174 million shoppers who spent an average of $335.47, according to the NRF.

NOVEMBER 26, 2019 BLACK FRIDAY
Let the shopping season begin! Black Friday sales have become a staple of the holiday shopping season. Many items are deeply discounted and shoppers may wait in line for lengthy periods of time to snag some of the season’s hottest gifts.
S
hoppers often target high-profile, expensive electronics. In fact, according to the retail advisor and trend forecaster NerdWallet, technology products are among the most sought-after products among Black Friday shoppers. According to the shopping resource Deal News, shoppers poised to purchase one of the latest smartphone offerings this shopping season may find that Android products are more available and more heavily
discounted than Apple products. Although Apple recently debuted its iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X, the iPhone X is unlikely to be marked down, so shoppers in the market for discounted iPhones might be wise to focus their efforts on the iPhone 8. Shoppers also may have their eyes on gadgets for their homes. In 2016, products like Amazon’s Echo were topsellers, and connected home technology continues to excite consumers. Black Friday isn’t all about technology, however.
Kitchen cookware and small appliances also attract shoppers on Black Friday. Typically high-priced items like stand mixers, brewing systems, vacuums, and blenders are popular among Black Friday shoppers. isions, ar, telev e y h books, c a E ps,note to p la , gaming tablets es, and n o s h tp r e shelve sma ly off th f s le o n s o con bers rd num in reco Y. BLACK FRIDAY NOVEMBER 26, 2019
Greener ways to shop Black Friday Shoppers who are braving the chilly temperatures of the early morning hours may have sales on their minds, but they can ensure Black Friday shopping suits their environmental ideals as well. TEAM UP Come Black Friday, shoppers can travel to stores together to reduce the amount of vehicles on the road. Carpooling or ridesharing to stores can prevent excessive vehicle emissions. Carpooling also has the added benefit of allowing drivers to utilize carpool lanes on major highways. This keeps cars moving at steady speeds, improving fuel efficiency and reducing the likelihood that fuel will be wasted while sitting in stop-and-go traffic.

BRING REUSABLE TOTE BAGS Black Friday shoppers shouldn’t forget to pack tote bags among their shopping supplies. Reusable bags help cut down on the waste produced from plastic or paper shopping bags. Tote bags tend to be durable as well, which may make it easier for shoppers to carry around all of the items they purchase on Black Friday.
LOOK FOR MINIMAL PACKAGING When making purchases, choose items that feature the least amount of packaging. Items with minimal packaging will result in a lot less waste making its way into landfills.

Waking up early in the morning can leave even the most seasoned early-risers feeling a bit bleary-eyed. Many such shoppers rely on a jolt of fresh-brewed caffeine to get moving. Shoppers can skip disposable coffee cups that fill up landfills and bring along their own reusable insulated mugs or thermoses. Some coffee vendors may even provide refills at discounted costs.

Black Friday shopping tips People of a certain age might remember the often hectic Black Friday of old, when shoppers would line up outside stores in the wee hours of the morning hoping to land the best deals on gifts for their loved ones.
SHOP LOCAL Shoppers who want to venture out on Black Friday but still avoid crowds should skip shopping malls and big box stores in favor of local retailers. Shopping local is a great way to keep money in your community, and local shops tend to have more unique offerings than chain stores. One-of-a-kind gifts can be a great way to show loved ones how much you appreciate them. And local

shopping districts likely won’t draw the massive crowds or produce the long checkout lines that consumers are likely to encounter at malls.
and you can then present that price to the cashier at checkout. Many retailers are willing to match lower prices from other retailers, but you won’t know unless you ask.
COMPARISON SHOP Comparison shopping can make Black Friday even more deal-friendly. If you’re stuck on a long checkout line, use the time spent waiting for the next cashier to look for the same item online. You might find it’s less expensive somewhere else,
