Side Street Studio is Celebrating 40 Years of representing Local Artists! In 1984 Lilly Bohlin, Shirley Ann Bertz, Francisca Hayman, Rita Darling, Nanci Secter, Naomi Smith and Marjolyn Winkel rented the annex of an upholstery store on Fell Street to showcase and sell their work. The entrance to the store was on the side of the building, hence the name Side
Street Studio. Over the years they welcomed other artists to the collaboratively run space and built up a very loyal clientele for their locally handmade work. In the 90’s they moved to our current location on Oak Bay Ave and sold the business in 2000. I took over as the 4th owner in 2017.

Blossoming at Carlton House
At Carlton House, 90-year-old Grace Bartha snips a chrysanthemum and tucks it effortlessly into an elegant floral arrangement. It’s a move Grace has done many times before in her half-century-long career as a florist.
Grace was born in Yugoslavia in 1934, but her family soon immigrated to Canada where she grew up on a tobacco farm. From an early age she was drawn to the vibrant energy of city life, and at 18 moved with her husband to Toronto where she could finally be creative.
From there, she worked in fashion and got a degree in floral design. This path led her to Florida and California, where she enjoyed life as a florist designing for many prestigious hotels and beautiful celebrity homes.
In 2020 Grace’s second husband passed away, leading her to consider moving closer to family in Victoria. It was then that she discovered Carlton House: an independent living retirement
community in the Oak Bay Village.
Since moving, Grace has truly found her own unique niche using her ‘flower power’. Each week, she meticulously arranges flowers for the dining room, and rescues healthy blooms from outgoing lobby arrangements, giving them new life in beautiful creations around the building. She also beautifies the outdoors, as an active member of the gardening club.
Grace is known for her positivity and artistic individualism, which isn’t just limited to flowers. Her personal motto, “Look good, feel good,” is evident every day in her vibrant wardrobe and personal flair that echoes influences of fashion icon Iris Apfel.
Grace’s dedication to her craft and her community are a great example of the many wonderful ways one can thrive in community living at Carlton House. After all, it’s not just a place to live, but truly a haven where individuals continue to create, inspire, and blossom.

the best possible deals on the market. Big corporations tend to contract with their suppliers/ producers and are unable to take advantage other deals as they come available; they also will buy from centralized warehouses where prices are locked in and there’s no ability to shop the market. This is where The Old Farm Market thrives - by working with every supplier that we can create competition and drive prices down for our customers.
The heart of The Old Farm Market is affordable produce. We have thresholds to ensure we are
not overcharging our customers and we check weekly against 5 major grocery chains to make sure we’re the lowest price on every item possible. Shoppers are noticing, and customers are flocking to The Old Farm Market to save money on their grocery bills. As we get busier, our ability to drive our prices even lower strengthens as our buying power increases, and we pass those savings back to our customers. We want our shoppers to feel confident knowing that The Old Farm Market has honest pricing practices with the customer in mind.
We’re excited to announce that we’ve opened our Summer Center across from our Sandwich Bar. Come on down for an ice cream cone, smoothie, ice cream sandwich, lemonade, and more!
Local Supporting Local –that’s what The Old Farm Market is all about, and thanks to our incredible customers we can support our local economy. Our philosophy is that by providing exceptional affordability we help our local economy by saving customers money to spend at other local businesses. Thanks for supporting local!
