Bilingual street signs for Downtown Duncan By Ian Locke, Executive Director, Downtown Duncan BIA n 2019, the Downtown Duncan Business Improvement Area Society (DDBIA) was successful in its application to receive funding through the BC Rural Dividend Grant program. One of the projects approved for funding through this program is an initiative to get bilingual street signs made for the downtown Duncan area showing street names in both Hulíqíumiínum and English. Project manager Amanda Vance has been working closely with Cowichan Tribes for nearly a year now, even taking private lessons in Hulíqíumiínum herself in order to better understand the names being chosen and the cultural significance of the consultation processes. A series of six official meetings were held where both elders and youth workshopped potential names to be chosen. Once completed, the proposal will be taken to Duncan City Council later this spring in the form of a short documentary film and presentation given by a live delegation. The DDBIA hopes that projects like this can reflect the business community’s leadership in building relationships and fostering meaningful cooperation with our local indigenous population. We hope that this campaign will yield a successful result and can set an example for other cities and towns alike across the province and the country. Keep an eye out and stay tuned for more on this, including public release of the documentary film piece in production now.

Create your sleep sanctuary by Dawn Howlett

W

e are becoming more aware of the impact of certain products on our environment and our health. Mattresses can be responsible for exposing us to an

array of chemicals while we sleep. Mattresses are also hitting the landfills at an alarming rate since the industry started making cheaper models that don’t last as long as they used to. Recent scientific studies show that polyester and synthetic fibres found in mattress casings and bedding break down over time and dislodge during washing. They make their way through the sewage out into our coastal waters where marine life ingests them. Even more disturbing, it has been determined that these fibres float in the air where we breathe them in. The broken fibres are small, and they can enter our bodies through our skin. Investing in naturally made mattresses and bedding is a win-win. We end up with a higher quality product, plus we get that good feeling

knowing we are part of a global movement that is making a difference. Doing what’s best for ourselves as well as for the planet feels great. Everybody wins. Natural fibres are breathable, so our body heat can easily pass through and out. Our bodies have a built-in temperature regulating system and bedding needs to be breathable in order to support that. Otherwise, we wake up hot and sweaty, removing covers to release the heat build-up and disrupt our precious sleep. There are no harmful chemicals, pesticides or toxic dyes added to certified organic bedding. The amount of chemicals that we are exposed to due to pollution and manufacturing out there in the big world is increasing all the time. Creating a sleep sanctuary in our homes

HEALTH BENEFITS OF OILS & VINEGARS

“Recent studies consistently support that the Mediterranean diet, based on virgin olive oil, is compatible with a healthier ageing and increased longevity.” Consumption of olive oil has been associated with reduction of total cholesterol and increase in the high density cholesterol (HDL-C); improved sensitivity of cells to insulin, which helps prevent metabolic syndrome associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure The Marvelous Wonderettes Until March 28 Chemainus Theatre 9737 Chemainus Rd. and obesity; decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and more. POTENT ANTIOXIDANT

Phenolic compounds are potent antioxidants found in virgin and extra-virgin olive oil, and give unrefined olive oils their distinctive flavours and high degree of stability. NATURAL PAINKILLER

Recent research has identified the antioxidant called oleocanthal — only found in extravirgin olive oil. Oleocanthal has a potency strikingly similar to that of the drug Ibuprofen in inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (Cox) enzyme that causes pain and inflammation.Finding a nutritional way to reduce pain and inflammation could be a solution for people suffering from pain. ABOUT POLYPHENOLS

Polyphenols are a class of antioxidants found in a variety of foods. Recent studies indicate that potent phenols are responsible for many of the health benefits associated with consuming fresh, high quality

extra virgin olive oil. Phenols in olive oil decrease over time or when exposed to heat, oxygen and light. HEALTH BENEFITS OF BALSAMIC VINEGARS

Italians have been relishing balsamic vinegar for centuries. Today, balsamic vinegar is one of the most popular condiments available in grocery stores and is used in sauces, marinades, dressings, dips, desserts, etc. The popularity surge of this dark, syrup-like condiment is because of its remarkable taste and health benefits. Authentic balsamic vinegar is aged for a minimum of three years to a maximum period of

Sleep Solutions has many solutions beyond purchasing a mattress that can begin your journey toward a better night’s sleep. Starting with a baseline of clean, green and breathable bedding gives us the best chance for an amazing sleep. The moisture wicking ability of natural fibres help keep bedding dry and dust mite free. Balsamic vinegar retains most of the nutrients present in the parent grapes and comprises nutrients like iron, calcium, potassium, manganese, phosphorus and magnesium in adequate amounts.
