Help Esquimalt celebrate 50 years of Earth Day! ave you had a chance to celebrate Earth Day with Esquimalt? The Township holds an annual event at Highrock Park full of informative displays, activities for all ages and notably - goats! These capricious caprids are routinely used to help get rid of invasive plants. Even the prickly Himalayan Blackberry is no match for their ravenous appetite. Local schools and community members work with Parks staff to raise awareness about keeping our local parks and urban forests safe and

healthy. Activities include invasive species removal, planting and trail building. A number of exhibitors will be on hand this year to provide environmental information. The following groups will be in attendance: • Orca Rescue Society • Esquimalt Farmers Market • Island Health Clean Air Bylaw • Rocky Point Bird Observatory • Robert Bateman Foundation • Victoria Natural History Society • Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary
• World Fisheries Trust This year, Earth Day offerings are amped up with special events throughout the week. Highlights include: • Week-long informative displays about heat pumps, green energy upgrades, food waste and recycling; • Screening and panel discussion of the documentary, ‘Wasted’. Panel members are Janiene Boice, Senior Director, Mustard Seed Street Church; Holly Dumbarton, Project Manager, Food Eco-District and Paula and Nairn from the Zero Waste Emporium;
• Esquimalt Clean-Up Project, where dedicated volunteers help remove litter from the popular E&N trail & tracks. The event runs rain or shine, so make sure you come prepared with warm clothes and boots if necessary. Dogs must be on-leash in the park from Tuesday, Apr. 21 to Thursday, Apr. 23. Esquimalt’s Earth Day celebration is made possible with the support of many local sponsors. A big thank you goes out to Country Grocer and Coast Environmental. Esquimalt Recreation Centre Sunday, Mar. 22, 6 to 8 p.m. Family fun 5km walk/run through the beautiful streets of Esquimalt. Stroller, wheelchair and dog friendly. This is an event where we can gather and enjoy the company of friends and families and raise funds for Child Find BC. The funds raised will help Child Find BC continue to do the work that they do to keep our families educated and safe in our world today. Join us for this annual event. Esquimalt 5K presented by Lab Health Physio Archie Browning Sports Centre Saturday, April 4, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Join the most scenic 5K in the region—journeying through Saxe and Macaulay Point Parks. This event attracts all levels, walkers to elites, and includes chip timing, a healthy living marketplace, refreshments and coffee, mini-massage treatments (limited quantities available - please sign up at event), and a family corner with a variety of activities for all ages. The Story of Food Waste Esquimalt Recreation Centre Monday, April 20; 7 to 8:30 p.m. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, take in this free screening of ‘Wasted! The Story of Food Waste’.“ Can you imagine if every time you opened your wallet, a third of your cash fell out - and you did nothing about it? Consider the fact that one-third of the food grown annually for human consumption is never eaten, for one reason or another, it ends up in the garbage. ‘Wasted! The Story of Food Waste’ aims to change the way people buy, cook, recycle, and eat food.
Esquimalt’s Earth Day Celebration at Highrock Park Highrock Park, Wednesday, April 22; 10 a.m to 1:30 p.m. Township of Esquimalt Parks staff will coordinate this Earth Day Celebration, working with local schools and community members to raise awareness about keeping our local parks and urban forests safe and healthy. Activities include invasive species removal, planting, trail building and, again this year, hungry goats will be assisting with weeding out invasive species and having a great meal at the same time. The goats are an important part of the cleanup as they are able to access ground too difficult for people to reach. Several local schools will participate with some 600 students pitching in. Activities for the students include invasive species removal, planting, trail building and nature walks.
