added energy to the community. Our recreation facilities are among the best in the region, playing host to national sporting events and music performances by notable artists, as well as providing a range of programs and services for residents. The family-friendly Esquimalt Adventure Park is a popular downtown destination at all times of the year. Visitors and residents are flocking to our thriving arts and culture events, including the Memorial Park Music Fest, our annual Arts Festival, the Township Classics music series, and the awardwinning Esquimalt Farmers Market. The Township also hosts the popular Ribfest each September, attracting visitors from

throughout the region and Washington State. Esquimalt Town Square, currently under construction, will be a catalyst for sustainable development in the community for years to come. It includes civic, residential and commercial uses and will feature a public square and through-block art walk, easy access to transit, and bicycle and pedestrianfriendly spaces. Esquimalt is growing. In light of this, the Township has been working hard to encourage sustainable development that works for residents, the business community and visitors. Several new housing and commercial developments are underway adding opportunities for

families and businesses. Need we say more? Well, yes! There are no development cost charges levied on development projects, and Esquimalt has a revitalization tax exemption bylaw as an incentive for businesses and properties to beautify the corridor while also supporting heritage conservation. This makes Esquimalt not only a great place to visit, but to do business as well. Explore opportunities in Esquimalt. As you can see, we’re ready. Are you? For more information, visit: esquimalt.ca.

Hero Warship: HMCS Beacon Hill and her daring commander

Ted Simmons and Victoria Mayor commissioning the HMCS Beacon Hill.

he story of Victoria’s adopted ship, the HMCS Beacon Hill, and the courageous naval hero who commanded her, are the focus of a new exhibit at CFB Esquimalt Naval and Military Museum, opening 17 May. “Hero Warship: HMCS Beacon Hill and Her Daring Commander” celebrates the ship’s historical ties to Victoria, and the deep local connections between her commanding officer, Edward Theodore ‘Ted’ Simmons, and the city he called home. Ted Simmons became a celebrated hero of the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II. Yet he remains relatively unknown in his former home community, and his daring exploits have gone largely unrecognized. Like many other Canadians who sacrificed personal security for the uncertainties and danger of wartime service, Simmons displayed genuine bravery in the face of terrible — and terrifying — circumstances. As a member of the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RCNVR), he received a unique combination of gallantry awards for his bravery during the Battle of the Atlantic — he was awarded both the Distinguished Service Order and the Distinguished Service Cross. His hair-raising exploits, which included boarding a sinking German U-boat in search of ‘Enigma’ code books and equipment, served as the basis for the wartime motion picture Corvette K-225, featuring Hollywood star Randolph Scott. He was also featured in the National Film Board of Canada production, Corvette ‘Port Arthur’. The exhibit showcases the link between Simmons, his ship and the citizens of Victoria. It also explores his personal development and training as a naval officer in wartime. The grand opening takes place Friday, May 17 at 10 a.m. in the Museum Building 37 at Naden, off Admirals Road in Esquimalt.
