We have uncrated the world of entertaining for you!

Davidson Chambers was created by mutual friends (Janice & Davidson) who have always shared a love of food (mostly dips and cheese!), decor and a passion for retail and shopping. e sharing of this enthusiasm created a friendship that now is measured only in “how old is Erin now”, the youngest of Janice’s three children, who was seven years old when they fi rst met. Erin is 34 now. Even though the locations might have changed over those years, the love for food and decor hasn’t, it’s only grown into so much more. e love of entertaining just added to the mix.

Both Janice & Davidson have let food be their guide for all their travels. Together or not, the bond of food has been shared, sometimes in pictures and talking about the story a er, or bringing back that prized item to share. ey both have an English heritage (yes not known for the fi nest culinary scene in the past, but so much be er now) but the classics and comforts of that heritage still bring back lots of memories of family, vacations and home.

So why Vancouver Island and Sidney? Well, both had lived in Vancouver for over 20 years. It has evolved, changed and has so many home decor stores, while the island has not seen as many. However, in Sidney, there is an evolving retail presence, more people moving from the surrounding cities nearby, and a more slower, balanced pace. Along with the convenient location, only minutes from one of the largest ferry ports in British Columbia, it is the gateway to the island and o en the fi rst stop for those coming

DAVIDSON CHAMBERS is excited to be open in its fi rst location on the island. Located in the heart of Sidney, this landmark building started its life back in the early 1940’s at the Victoria Airport. Like many of the other buildings on Beacon Avenue it was moved to its current spot a er World War II and has been home to many businesses over the year. e transformation has begun, giving new life to this historical building. We are looking forward to sharing our vision for great entertaining and home decor, inspiring you to plan that next dinner party, choose the perfect gi for the host/hostess or update your everyday dinnerware. Overcoming gravity

Q: Dr.Crapo: I am a caregiver with charge of a handicapped patient. Years ago, she had dental implants and a fi xed set of teeth to replace a lower denture. She had a full upper denture at the time. A er she got her lower teeth, I noticed her upper teeth seemed loose. is seemed a bit ironic as it had been her lower teeth that were loose before the implants. For years now this wonderful girl has not had the benefit of upper teeth because they will not stay in. We’ve had the denture relined but to no avail. Part of the problem is that she has a very hard bite and grinds her teeth terribly when we put the upper denture in. e dentist says that her ability to give him the proper position of her bite is impossible. So here we are with no way to provide upper teeth. e money she once had has been reduced

If

so that only her monthly expenses can be provided. How do we get the upper denture to stay in place? Most denture wearers I’ve spoken with love their upper dentures. ey say they’ve never had a problem. Please help me understand.

A: You ask a great question about a very serious problem. When an upper denture is loose and won’t stay in place it makes the individual feel very insecure.

ere is nothing he/she can do to keep it in place – speech is impaired and eating is reduced to soup. Loose lower dentures are a pain but gravity with help for the tongue o en manages the problem - even during chewing and speaking; in fact, many folks do this balancing act without a thought.

Having said that, I saw a gentleman in the past six months whose upper dentures would not stay in place. e

palate was flat, and he could generate no suction to keep his teeth in place. His social life was deeply impaired, and he was sick of his soup diet. In his case, two implants were placed to retain his upper dentures. Once gravity was overcome the hard palate provided all the support needed to chew and grind his food. He couldn’t be happier to have his life back. In your patient’s situation, this solution would keep the denture in place, but severe grinding forces could cause the implants to fail. More implants will be needed to make her situation stable and long lasting because the bone in the upper jaw is relatively so and strength is gained with more implants. ough this has not ended on a happy note, we will help if we can.

Trouble understanding speech even though your hearing is ‘normal’?

Trouble understanding speech even though your hearing is ‘normal’?

You might have an Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). APD is a condition that a ects the way the brain processes auditory information. It is not a problem with the ears themselves, but rather with how the brain interprets and makes sense of sounds. Individuals with APD o en have normal hearing sensitivity but struggle to extract meaning from what they hear e ectively.

APD can manifest in various ways and can a ect both children and adults. Common symptoms of APD include di culty understanding speech in noisy environments, trouble following verbal instructions, struggling to di erentiate similar sounds, poor listening skills, and experiencing heightened sensitivity to certain sounds. ese di culties can impact communication, learning, and social interactions.

e exact causes of APDs are still not fully understood, but several factors can contribute

to their development. Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to APDs, while others may acquire them due to head injuries, chronic ear infections, or exposure to excessive noise. APDs can also coexist with other conditions such as a ention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), or learning disabilities. Understanding the underlying causes can help healthcare professionals tailor interventions and support strategies accordingly.

To diagnose APD, a comprehensive evaluation by an audiologist is necessary. e assessment typically involves a combination of tests that evaluate various aspects of auditory processing, such as auditory discrimination, auditory memory, and auditory sequencing. ese

tests may include speech-in-noise testing, sound localization, and auditory pa ern recognition tasks. e assessment process is crucial for identifying specific areas of di culty and understanding how an individual processes auditory information. It helps develop a targeted treatment plan tailored to each person’s unique needs. While there is no cure for APDs, various interventions can help individuals manage their auditory processing di culties e ectively. Treatment options may include:

a. Environmental Modifications: Creating an optimal listening environment by reducing background noise and improving acoustic conditions can enhance an individual’s ability to process auditory information.

b. Auditory Training: Engaging in structured auditory training programs can help improve specific auditory skills, such as sound discrimination and auditory memory.

c. Assistive Listening Devices: e use of assistive devices, such as frequency-modulated (FM) systems or personal amplification devices, can enhance speech perception and reduce the impact of background noise.

d. Educational Support: Collaborating with educators to implement strategies that accommodate the individual’s auditory processing needs, such as preferential seating, visual supports, and repetition, can facilitate learning and academic success.

e. Speech-Language erapy: Working with a speechlanguage pathologist who specializes in APDs can help individuals develop compensatory strategies, improve language skills, and enhance overall communication abilities. Auditory processing disorders can present significant challenges in daily life, but with proper assessment and interventions, individuals with APDs can learn to manage their di culties e ectively. By understanding the causes of APDs, seeking professional assessments, and exploring appropriate treatment options, individuals and their families can navigate the journey towards improved auditory processing and communication skills. With support and appropriate interventions, individuals with APDs can thrive and reach their full potential.

If you feel you or your child would benefit from an Auditory Processing assessment, call Hear Inc. at 778-351-1145 to set up an appointment with audiologist, Martine Schlagintweit, at our Saanichton location.
