Retirement Living in Victoria lement came to Victoria in 2018. Victoria was chosen because it is one of Canada’s most desirable locations for retirement. “Right by the harbour and in very close proximity to downtown, our property at Kimta and Tyee Road is ideal for our intergenerational vision for aging-in-place,” says Candy Ho, Director and Vice President of Element Lifestyle Retirement. “Everyone benefits from connection. Seniors participate and give to our culture through the sharing of their values, experience and wisdom. They continue to grow and learn from our younger generations who shape the future,” added Ho. The spirit of Element is rooted in legacy. Candy Ho, along with her father, Don Ho, Director & President, started the company in 2012 with OPAL by Element in Vancouver. They work closely with Candy’s sister, Wendy Ho, VP of Project Development, and are fortunate to have a collaborative team who

share their passion for making a difference. Candy’s father, Don has been involved in the retirement development industry in B.C. since the 1990s. He was the leading co-founder of the B.C. Senior Living Association (BCSLA), an organization committed to inspiring, supporting and advocating for seniors. He was the first to provide assisted living in a community environment, and was instrumental in the government’s formation of the Registrar of Assisted Living. Candy is currently a board member of BCSLA. AQUARA by element offers the opportunity to purchase or rent in a community where you can live independently, stay in the same unit for supportive living, or move into licenced care for 24/7 registered nursing care. This makes it easy for couples with different needs to stay together and receive the help they need. Young 65+ retirees can enjoy their lives fully during their active years while having complete peace of mind knowing they will not have to move again due to increased care needs over
time. In offering condominiums and intergenerational events and activities, AQUARA creates the comfort of home within a vibrant gathering place for friends, family and community. This is where people can receive support and care without being engulfed in an energy of suffering and degeneration. You’ll find a culture of hard-working, compassionate, competent and passionate professionals at AQUARA by element. From the design details and ambience and attitude of staff, residents experience warmth and intimacy, heart and sincerity. “It is our utmost privilege to create communities that contribute lasting, positive social impact and better ways of living, in ways that affect all generations. This sense of fulfillment and purpose is our greatest reward. Any financial success comes as a result of doing the right thing by all people. Consequently, this allows us to sustain the quality of our services and environment we
promise to deliver, and to create more such communities.” The new Discovery Centre is open at #110-645 Tyee Rd. You can experience the model condo with all of its senior-friendly attention to detail, and find out more about the development. AQUARA by element is working diligently to finalize their plans in time to launch their sales and rental reservations this summer. Element is working to open Opal in Vancouver this summer/fall. It is 100 per cent sold, 100 per cent of rentals are reserved, and there is an 80 per cent waitlist. The next project slated is Oasis — a 17-acre village that has passed third reading in the Township of Langley, which won Element an international award over 950 retirement projects assessed worldwide for its intergenerational vision. Prebiotics and Probiotics not the same The Generous Gift of Being All Ready to Go
I
remember once chatting with an older fellow who was nearing the end of his life. During one of our ‘chats’, I asked him about his end of life preparations, and was he prepared for his immanent death. His response was a little shocking to me — “Hell, I won’t be here to worry about it. I’ll let my family handle it all.” And so ended the discussion. He was unwilling to talk about it, and would leave the mess for his survivors to clean up. A nasty mess it was that the family had to deal with, and it robbed them of good-byes and grieving time. The lack of planning created all manner of financial and legal woes, never mind deciding what casket to purchase and how much to spend on funeral services. The ensuing chaos and infighting was unpleasant for everyone. I have found over the years that one of the most loving things we can do for family and friends is ‘be all ready to go’. To have our end of life
well planned and organized in such a way that our family can spend their time being together, grieving their loss and remembering their newly deceased loved one. Having our will, representation agreement, advanced care directives, and funeral arrangements written out and filed in a convenient and easy to find file or binder is a generous and loving gift we can leave for our loved ones. At the time of death, having a great plan in place allows family members to follow a well-laid out action plan while not having to agonize over the many challenging decision they would otherwise have had to make. We have handed those choices over well in advance. The more complete your end of life plan, the more graceful and loving the final weeks, days and hours can be. Be generous and loving and get yourself All Ready to Go — do it out of love for your family and friends. It is a kind and generous gift!

World Table Tennis Day T
able tennis, also called ping pong, originated during Victorian England where it was originally played as a parlour game. The term “ping-pong” was used as a catchy phrase by the company J. Jaques & Son Ltd., and hence was trademarked by them in 1901. Table tennis became a competitive sport in 1988 at the Summer Olympics, and has since honed its rules for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Organizations like the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) formed and have taken table tennis to a whole new level worldwide. In 2015, ITTF created World Table Tennis Day to get people interested in this competitive sport, and has since been celebrating so that more people can learn about the sport. ITTF developed a table tennis for ALL program with the aim to make the sport popular, universal and inclusive. The term “ALL” means more people, and is inclusive of age, gender, social status, culture and physical ability. Celebrate World Table Tennis Day by taking part in the second annual friendly, all-inclusive game. There will be players on hand to show you the ropes if you’ve never played before, or even if you haven’t played for a long time. All equipment will be provided.

M Exploring the Islands of the People
H
aida Gwaii, meaning Islands of the Haida People, formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands and sometimes referred to as Galápagos North, or simply the Edge of the World, is a destination for anyone looking to explore a truly exotic and enchanted land. The archipelago, made up of 150 islands, rests just a little beyond the western edge of the continent about 100 kilometres off B.C.’s north coast.
The Islands are a place to experience the endless extent of nature. Massive cedar and Sitka spruce trees tower high above, while rocky and sandy beaches cover the coastline where waves crash and coastal breezes roar. The islands are home to a myriad of marine and terrestrial species. Watch toward the sky as eagles and falcons soar in abundance, or down below where orcas fall through the waves. Beyond the mystical landscapes and the Island’s plentiful flora and fauna, Haida Gwaii offers much more to the discerning explorer. People have called these lands home for thousands of years, and the Haida culture is ever-present. The past can be seen first-hand at ancient abandoned villages where Haida ‘watchmen’ work closely with Parks Canada to protect these important cultural sites. Their history can be seen among the foundations of long abandoned longhouses and the remnants of great totem poles that are slowly returning to nature. The displays at the awardwinning Haida Heritage Centre at _ay Llnagaay bring the Island’s story and legends to life.
... THOSE WILLING TO MAKE THE JOURNEY WILL BE REWARDED WITH AN EXPERIENCE LIKE NO OTHER. The many layers of history are reflected today in the art, tradition and culture of Haida Gwaii and its people. There are plenty of opportunities to interact with the locals — a mix of Haida and non-aboriginal descent. Perhaps join a locally guided boat tour through the remote wilderness, or dine on a feast from the sea at the seaside home of a Haida chef. While not all that far away, travelling to the edge of the world can be tricky to navigate. The small population and remote location do not provide for the simplest connections. But those willing to make the journey will be rewarded with an experience like no other. Mile Zero Tours is a Victoria-based tour operator that is offering inclusive tours to Haida Gwaii. The nine-day small group adventure has departures in June, July, August and September. The fully escorted tour combines BC Ferries spectacular Inside Passage cruise, BC’s North Coast and Haida Gwaii. All transportation, many meals, locally guided tours and museums, as well as airfare back to Victoria or Vancouver are all included. ortgage renewal got you stressed? It doesn’t have to be this way. As our lives get busier, it can be ever so tempting to sign the mortgage renewal offer when it arrives in the mail. All it takes is one signature, and then you don’t have to deal with it again for another five years. This is what 80 per cent of people do. The reality is that the renewal offer sent out almost never represents the bank’s best offer, and usually it’s not even close. Talking with a licensed mortgage professional at renewal time can literally save you thousands of dollars. Not only will they help you negotiate the best possible interest rate, but they will also help you find a mortgage that suits your specific goals and needs.

Take a Hike for Hospice BY YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURHOOD HEART PHARMACIST
T
ake a hike, it’s good for you. Maybe I should rephrase that sentence. Regular exercise in Victoria’s beautiful surroundings can have many health benefits. I think that sounds a bit better. Grammar aside, there are many benefits from getting regular exercise in the great outdoors. In this article, I shall mention some of the health benefits of walking that you may not have thought about. Can walking in a park make you happier? Most of us believe this, but now there is science that provides proof. A team from Stanford University published a study in the July 2015 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science called, “Nature experience reduces rumination and subgenual prefrontal cortex activation”. This is quite an impressive headline that boils down to “walking in nature can make you happier.” These researchers scanned the brains of people who walked in a park, or in a high
traffic urban setting for 90 minutes. The people in the park showed decreased activity in a region of the brain associated with depression compared to those who were walking alongside busy traffic. You should take your children or grandkids for a walk — it is good for their bones. This idea is backed by science, too. Researchers at Oregon State University found that children who got regular weight-bearing exercise had stronger bones than sedentary children. You might not be aware of this, but 60 per cent of the risk of developing osteoporosis in adulthood can be attributed to lack of bone density created in childhood. How much exercise is needed per day? These researchers felt that 40 to 60 minutes at any point throughout the day was good. This is consistent with Health Canada’s recommendations for physical activity. Regular exercise for children can also make them smarter. Again, this statement is backed by science. In Sweden, researchers tracked the
physical activity and academic achievement of twins. Apparently, there is a large registry of twins in Sweden which provides all sorts of interesting health info. What they found is that regular physical exercise between the ages of 15 to 18 years leads to greater cognitive performance at age 18. So now that you are in the great outdoors, and have had a lovely walk around the Inner Harbour, why would you need to have your blood pressure checked? As always, science has a great reason. Researchers from Indiana State University found that 18 per cent of patients screened at community events were found to have undiagnosed high blood pressure. Stop by the Heart Pharmacy booth at the Hike for Hospice and have your blood pressure checked by one of our pharmacists. While you’re there, ask to try a portable fingertip electrocardiogram device called Kardia. Undiagnosed atrial fibrillation, a type of irregular heartbeat, is a significant risk factor for strokes. The Kardia device can determine if you might have atrial

Once you have been diagnosed with diabetes, your doctor will choose the best treatment based on the type of diabetes you have, your daily routines, and any other health problems. EXPERTS SAY YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR DIABETES. HERE ARE FOUR WAYS TO CONSIDER.
many factors to consider when exercising to manage diabetes. Senior Care Victoria’s Aging in Place Experts say you can control your diabetes by: 1. Track your glucose levels. High glucose levels (hyperglycemia) or low glucose levels (hypoglycemia) can be risky to your health. Its important for seniors to talk to their doctor about how to check their glucose levels at home. 2. Make healthy food choices. Learn how different foods affect glucose levels. For weight loss, check out foods that are low in fat and sugar. Let your doctor know if you want help with meal planning. 3. Get exercise. Daily exercise can improve glucose levels in older people with diabetes, but who do not exercise during peak insulin activity periods. Blood glucose levels should be between 5.5 and 7.7 mm/dl. Exercises at low intensity for a longer duration. Keep a form of fast acting carbohydrates with you to treat low blood glucose. Ask a certified medical exercise specialist to help you plan an exercise program at home or in the gym.
4. Take your diabetic medication. Tell your doctor if you have side effects or cannot maintain your medication. Your doctor may want you to see other healthcare providers who can help manage some of the other conditions associated with your diabetes. Talk to your doctor about how to stay healthy. Over time, people with diabetes may need both lifestyle changes and medication. At first, learning all you need to know about diabetes may seem daunting, perhaps even a little frightening. Fortunately, many services are available to help you learn more about diabetes and what you can do to manage the condition. Learn as much as you can about diabetes. The more you learn, the better equipped you will be to make the lifestyle adjustments that come with good diabetes management. Maybe your list has 10 different, otherwise impossible, activities you’d like to conquer, like participating in a marathon or skydiving. Maybe your list includes reuniting with a long lost friend. The sky is the limit when it comes to the items you include on your list. Just be
sure to challenge yourself to do the things that you might not normally do otherwise. LEARN A NEW ACTIVITY Learning a new activity is a great way to thrive emotionally, physically, mentally and socially as you age. You might take dance lessons or learn to play a musical instrument. Maybe you will join a gym and commit to a weekly exercise regime. Or you may decide to volunteer with youth at a community centre or school. The point is, never stop learning and trying out new things throughout your retirement.

Plan a brunch with friends. Take a new route on your daily walk. Intentionally look for new opportunities to connect with your spouse or partner. Treasure each day for the simple, yet priceless gifts that you are given. As you enter your senior years, you are blessed with time to do what you want, to go where you want and to live how you want. By staying active physically, socially and mentally, you can improve your overall health and create lasting memories to highlight your retirement. Jump right into your new life during retirement.
