very March, the world celebrates Ireland’s patron saint. But how much do you really know about St. Patrick and his adopted homeland? Saint Patrick was the Christian missionary who is credited with converting Ireland to Christianity in the 400sAD. Since there are so many legends that surround his life, it is difficult to find a definitive truth. Many do not know that St. Patrick was not actually Irish at all. While his exact birthplace and date are not known, it is believed he was born around the year 400AD in Scotland or Wales. As a young man, Patrick was kidnapped and sold into slavery as a sheep herder in Ireland. During his six-years in captivity, he became fluent in the Irish language. Patrick eventually escaped captivity after having a vision that told him to leave Ireland by going to the coast where he would find a ship waiting. Following these instructions, Patrick made his escape. Eventually, he made his way to France where he became a priest, and following another dream in which the people of Ireland were calling to him, he returned. He travelled throughout Ireland for 40 years, preaching to the people and converting thousands, including the high king.
EXPLORING THE LAND OF PATRICK
It is believed he died on the 17th of March, 460AD, and that is why Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th. St. Patrick is just one of many legendary figures to come alive on a visit to Ireland. The mystical land that enchanted Patrick has had a similar affect on visitors from around the world. Perched on Europe’s Western edge, visitors can expect stunning scenery unfolding around every turn in this land which is steeped in history. Ireland offers a plethora of castles, cathedrals, cliffs and caves. From the lively capital of Dublin to the barren west coast, to the long-troubled north, every place has its’ own story to tell. Throw in some whiskey, great music, legends and lore, and plenty of Irish charm along the way, and Ireland should be at the top of everyone’s destination list. Victoria-based Mile Zero Tours is off to Enchanted Ireland this October with a full 13-day tour of the Emerald Island. The tour includes all the must-see sites, a hefty dose of local culture, many meals and return airfare from Victoria. As always, enjoy complimentary home pick-up and return service on this or any other Mile Zero Tours trip. For details on this trip or others, visit: MileZeroTours. com or phone: 250-590-0811.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET
C
allouses are thickenings of normal skin in response to increased pressure to the skin. As they get larger, they cause irritation to the area and can eventually become so severe that they can inhibit your mobility. In some instances, the callous can precipitate a serious health problem known as ‘skin ulceration’. Shoe changes and callous debridement can help alleviate these lesions. Using orthotics to change the weight distribution on your feet can be a life saver for many patients. Dr. Kent Butler, D.P.M., graduated with honours from the California College of Podiatric Medicine. He then completed a one-year surgical residency followed by a one-year biomechanics fellowship at the Pacific Coast Hospital in San Francisco. Specializing in biomechanics helps him to accurately assess a patient’s foot and leg function
during the gait examination. As a student, Dr. Butler worked for four years making prescription orthotics for podiatrists. Here, he learned various fabrication techniques and modification skills to facilitate orthotic function. Dr. Butler is the only podiatrist who personally handcrafts every step of each custom orthotic for his patients. Foot pain is not something you have to live with. Most foot problems can be treated successfully. Happy feet allow you to enjoy an active and healthier life. “I love my job and would be glad to help you with your foot health. My mission is to treat every patient with respect and honesty.” Dr. Kent Butler is located in the Royal Oak Shopping Centre, #207-4480 West Saanich Rd. Phone: 250-704-1178.

HEALING BENEFITS OF WALK-IN BATHTUBS
SINCE ANCIENT TIMES, WARM WATER HAS BEEN USED TO IMPROVE HEALING AND TREAT A WIDE VARIETY OF DISEASES.
T
oday, modern science is proving the amazing healing abilities of warm baths. And what better way to soak than in a safe, secure walk-in tub in your own home?
ARTHRITIS RELIEF
Millions of Canadians suer from arthritis. The Arthritis Foundation states that warm water stimulates blood ow to sti muscles and joints, keeping them more exible and comfortable.
Soaking in warm water also reduces the gravity that causes joint compression. A study conducted by two physicians in 1998 showed that 90 per cent of the pressure on joints was relieved by soaking in warm water. After only three weeks of regular soaking, patients had considerably less stiness, less pain and increased exibility. Walk-in tubs with jets can increase the therapeutic beneďŹ ts, as well as the enjoyment of walk-in bathtubs.
IMPROVED HEART HEALTH
A recent study conducted by the Mayo Clinic revealed that soaking in a nice, warm bath oered beneďŹ ts similar to those provided by cardio ďŹ tness exercises. Soaking in a warm tub was shown to increase heart rate while actually lowering blood pressure. A warm soak was not only far more enjoyable and comfortable than exercising, it put less strain on the heart, protected against arrhythmias and improved heart strength.
REST AND RELAXATION
Studies show that a 20-minute bath enjoyed an hour before bedtime relaxes sore, tired muscles and improves sleep readiness. A sound night’s sleep rejuvenates mind and body and increases your overall sense of well-being. In addition to stress relief, walk-in bath-tubs can increase immune function, boost your metabolism, lower blood pressure, manage diabetes and improve heart health.
bathing provides safety and makes it easier for the caregiver to help the patient into and out of the tub. The high sides allow for dignity and privacy.
PEACE OF MIND
The CDC states that two-thirds of all injuries occur in the bathroom. Bathtubs for the disabled oer peace of mind with their special built-in safety features. They oer a low step in for getting in and out easily. Safe, anti-slip surfaces mean you don’t have to worry about slip and fall accidents. Sturdy built-in safety bars make sure you can get up and down securely.
NORTH AMERICAN MADE
In this era of cheap outsourcing and shoddily made foreign products, it’s nice to know that some things, like walk-in bathtubs, are still made right here in North America. This means you get a well-made, high quality tub that is safe, works great and has a lifetime warranty.

TUB DIABETES HELP
According to the New England Journal of Medicine, simply enjoying a nice soak in a warm bath reduced blood sugar levels by up to 13 per cent in those suering from type II diabetes. Research indicates that reducing stress levels can also help improve blood sugar levels.
ALZHEIMER’S RELIEF
Bathtubs for the disabled are a blessing for those suering from Alzheimer’s. Secure walk-in bathtubs help allay fears that patients may have. Being seated during

The success story of Shen Yun
T
he story of Shen Yun Performing Arts is somewhat of a fairy tale — the journey of a small group of leading Chinese artists turning a dream into a reality by touching the hearts of millions of audience members around the world. That number is growing exponentially as the acclaimed classical Chinese dance company launches its 2019 global tour, with six companies touring simultaneously. This year, Shen Yun returns to Vancouver for the 13th time, playing 10 shows at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre March 22 to 31. Five of those shows are matinees, which is good news for Vancouver Island residents because they can take a morning ferry, see the show, and return in the evening without the added expense of staying overnight in Vancouver. What is it about this New York-based group of artists that has captivated so many theatre-goers worldwide — transcending culture, race and ethnicity? Certainly, Shen Yun draws top artists from around the world, including winners of international competitions in classical Chinese dance and music, charming showgoers through superb dance and a unique orchestra which highlights Chinese melodies in a seamless combination of Eastern and Western instruments. The program is a visual feast, showcasing exquisite, handmade costumes and state-of-the-art technology, with ground breaking animated backdrops that extend the stage and transport theatregoers into different realms that
depict the natural world as well as ancient Chinese art, such as classical Chinese gardens and heavenly scenes often portrayed in Buddhist paintings. Contributing to the extraordinary performance is, not only the artists’ and the entire team’s talent and vigourous devotion to excellence, but their deep belief in and embodiment of Shen Yun’s mission. Established in New York in 2006, Shen Yun was founded on the mission of reviving the authentic traditional culture of China through classical Chinese dance and music. The name ‘Shen Yun’ means “the beauty of divine beings dancing.” It reflects the company’s aspiration to share the ancient Chinese belief that the arts are a gift to humankind from heaven. Shen Yun masterfully presents the noble values and authentic artistry of China’s ancient culture rooted in 5,000 years of civilization. The effects are deeply felt by audience members. According to reviews, many audience members say they found the show calming, uplifting, inspiring or deeply spiritual. “Spiritually uplifting” was how theatre critic Coral Drouyn described the performance. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and you must not miss it!” she said. Richard Wolfe, former vice-president of technology at 20th Century Fox, said, “Unbelievable. Best show I’ve ever seen. If you miss this show, you miss the best show.”

t might be safe to say that people have heard about the recent measles outbreak in Vancouver and Seattle. Outbreaks of this sort are rare in Canada. In fact, Health Canada reported only 29 domestic cases of measles is 2018. Measles was thought to be essentially eradicated in Canada after 1979, due to routine vaccination programs. However, outbreaks of this nature do bring up the ideas of herd immunity and antivaccination support. This article will try not to be a debate for either side — just facts about the matter. Measles, like rubella, mumps and chickenpox, is a viral disease. Symptoms of childhood viral diseases tend to overlap. Symptoms include fever, runny nose, sore throat and skin rashes. Most health care practitioners might have not seen a case of measles. The unique characteristic of measles is the small, blue-white spot on a red background that can appear on the inside of the cheeks. Like most viral diseases, the infection pattern is similar. Symptoms of the infection might not show up for one to two weeks after exposure. People are infectious for a time period before, during and after symptoms appear. This a very vague timeline for this disease, but it does highlight the fact that you can be contagious without demonstrating any symptoms. The consequences of catching measles for most healthy people are annoying. Young children, infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk of developing complications. The most worrisome risks of measles infections are encephalitis (brain swelling), pneumonia and blindness. It is thought to be fatal in two to three of every 1000 infections. This might not sound like much, but according to the World Health Organization, 157,700 died from the measles in 2011. This is close to the population of Victoria City. Public vaccination programs are effective due to the theory of herd immunity. To explain herd immunity, let us imagine a group of cows standing in tightly packed circle. With 95 per cent of cows vaccinated, there is a low risk of an unvaccinated cow standing on the edge of the circle spreading the disease to another unvaccinated cow standing in the middle of the circle. Conversely, if only 10 per cent of the cows are vaccinated, it is easy to spread through the entire herd, as unvaccinated and susceptible cows might be standing side by side. More vaccination, less chance that susceptible people will come into contact with each other. The exact percentage of vaccination to reach herd immunity is not known, but is thought to be in the 85 per cent range. One of the reasons why there is a yearly influenza outbreak is that vaccination rates for the yearly flu shot are as high as 45 per cent in the general population. One fascinating story of herd immunity and measles occured in the winter of 2014 at the happiest place on earth. There were 110 California residents who contracted measles after visiting Disneyland. Forty-five per cent of those affected were unvaccinated, 67 per cent intentionally. Only 12 per cent of those affected were vaccinated. There were no numbers given for people attending the theme park during the outbreak, but anyone who has been to Disneyland can use their imagination. There are few contradictions to receiving most vaccines, and they are thought to be very safe. Side effects are usually limited to mild flu-like symptoms which last a few days. More, most serious complication of the measles vaccine is a treatable bleed risk that occurs in one of every 40,000 vaccines. I had to look hard to find this side effect. The evidence suggesting that vaccines are linked to autism spectrum disorder was discredited around 2003. Most of us who were vaccinated as children are thought to have lifetime immunity to measles. If you are not sure, or want to update your immunity, you can receive a free vaccine from pharmacies, physicians’ offices or from public health clinics. If you are unvaccinated, you can choose to receive a vaccine at any age — there is no age of medical consent in Canada. – heartpharmacy.com

Ping Pong for Parkinson’s Submitted by Silver Threads Service
R
esearch shows that exercise that is aerobic and learning-based is beneficial for those with Parkinson’s disease due to the protective factor of neuroplasticity. Anecdotal evidence shows regular exercise can reduce stiffness and improve mobility, posture and gait. Ping pong also challenges our cardio vascular system, which is good for everyone. Beyond the aerobic benefit, ping pong provides an activity that is fluid, has a rhythmic motion, core rotation, and strengthens the body with the side to side movement. Participants with Parkinson’s describe “getting into the flow” and a mental focus that is similar to meditation. It is relaxing, yet stimulating, at the same time.
The bottom line is that exercise will make you feel better and improve your health. Finding folks who are having a shared experience managing Parkinson’s can provide support and kinship in the journey. The social benefits are as important to our overall health as the physical ones. The Victoria Silver Threads is offering a new program that will encourage neuroplasticity, and is a great way for people with Parkinson’s to stay active. T
here was a family upset I witnessed several years ago that could have easily been avoided by timely end of lifer planning. It was a nasty upset indeed. Two family members were fighting in the chapel over who would get their parent’s cremated remains. Yep, a public, hurtful and unnecessary upset. It affected everyone who was in attendance at the ceremony and really hurt the surviving spouse and other siblings. It left an emotional tarnish on what was supposed to be a ceremony of loving good-byes. Now, you might say this was an extreme example, and perhaps it was, yet I have witnessed other family upsets that may not be as public but were just as hurtful, at a time when we could be saying our loving good-byes instead of fighting. A member of MSBC (Memorial Society of BC), who did their end of life planning well
in advance and involved family members in the preparations, told us of how graceful and loving their ceremonies for their mom were. One of the primary reasons for the loving send-off was that they worked out all of their differences during the planning phase. Getting everyone on the same page well in advanced resulted in a chaos free end of life celebration. Seeing the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to end of life planning, especially lack of planning, I created an “All Ready To Go” binder that houses all of my end of life paperwork, from my power of attorney to my funeral arrangements. It rests on a bookshelf in my home office, and all my family members knows where it lives and more importantly, the details it contains. Intending to avoid painful chaos for my loved ones at the end of my life, I chose to have the uncomfortable conversations
well in advance — conversations that got us all on the same end of life page. The conversation was a little bumpy, and we hung in there until we all agreed and understood how I want my end of life and my after-death care to be. Now it is done. Believe it or not, we all had a sigh of relief that the end of my life has been well planned for all my family and me. Whew! So please do choose to have what may seem to be challenging conversations about your end of life wishes well in advance. Join the Memorial Society of BC and record your plans on an arrangement form, send a copy to the staff at the MSBC, and keep a copy for family’s use somewhere in the home. It is a generous gift to your loved ones, indeed. You will be glad you did. memorialsocietybc.org
