“PHYSICAL ACTIVITY - EVEN IF YOU DON'T LOSE AN OUNCE, YOU'LL LIVE LONGER, FEEL HEALTHIER AND BE LESS LIKELY TO GET CANCER, HEART DISEASE, STROKE AND ARTHRITIS. IT'S THE CLOSEST THING WE HAVE TO A WONDER DRUG.” — TOM FRIEDEN
COPING WITH
Arthritis THERE ARE A NUMBER OF WAYS TO EFFECTIVELY MANAGE CHRONIC ARTHRITIS PAIN, INCLUDING MANAGING YOUR WEIGHT, EATING A BALANCED DIET, EXERCISING, MAINTAINING A SENSE OF HUMOUR AND ASKING FOR HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT.
A
rthritis is a common problem among older adults that can severely affect their quality of life. Many people coping with the pain and discomfort of arthritis find it overwhelming. However, there are ways to effectively manage chronic arthritis pain. Becoming active and engaging in a regular exercise program is important for maintaining healthy joints. Synovial fluid is released to the joints through movement, thereby cushioning them throughout motion. Managing pain will be an important aspect of working through arthritic episodes. The Aging in Place Experts at Care & Company Senior Care Victoria recommend the following strategies to assist the reduction of arthritis pain:
1. Healthy living. Weight is something to consider when looking at arthritis management, as extra weight puts more stress on your knees and other joints. Every pound of extra weight adds about four pounds of pressure to the knees. A person who is 20 pounds overweight has an extra 80 pounds of pressure on their knees. Joint replacements such as hip or knee can be caused by a combination of arthritis and weight gain. 2.Eat a balanced diet. Although there are no diets or dietary supplements that will cure your arthritis, some people do find that their symptoms improve as a result of changing what they eat. Healthy diets include rich whole grains, fruit and vegetables. Eat foods low in saturated
fat, and include Omega 3 fatty acid rich food such as salmon, avocados and nuts. 3.Keep moving. Avoid holding one position for too long. Endorphins are stimulated through pain receptors to assist the body in handling pain. Exercise increases and releases endorphins, helping you to feel better during and after exercise. Strengthening the muscle structures around the joints will also help support joint health, aiding in pain relief and quality of movement. Stretching exercises help keep joints mobile and prevent stiffness. 4.Maintain a sense of humour. Focus on positive thoughts. Surround yourself with positive people and engage in hobbies. 5.Ask for help. Maintaining independence is essential to self-esteem, but independence at the cost of your health and happiness may
be detrimental to your quality of life. Achieve a balance by educating family members and friends about the disease and the limitations it imposes, and enlist their support. Ask for help with specific tasks. Various types of support services are available to ensure the needs of the senior are met. Home support workers, registered care aides, certified medical exercise specialists and a variety of nursing staff will help you live at home and provide you with the care you require. For more information on arthritis and the recommended steps to manage joint health, or to learn more about in-home care and exercise options, call Care & Company Senior Care Victoria at: 250-382-2328. Eye injuries can happen in an instant BY YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBOURHOOD HEART PHARMACIST
P
erhaps the most enjoyable part of writing these articles is finding a topic. I learned that April is Sports Eye Safety Month, at least according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. This seems like a worthy topic. I was not aware that, according to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), 700 workers sustain an on-the-job eye injury every day in Canada. Wearing eye protection seems like such a simple thing to do. It only takes a moment to lose an eye. In this article, we shall discuss eye safety and first aid. Wearing eye protection is such a simple thing. Most of us do it without thinking about it. Woodworkers enter the shop and put on their safety glasses, or at least they should. Gardeners go outside and put on their sunglasses, or at least they should. Any activity where debris is flying around or you might run into something pointy, you should be wearing eye protection. If you see someone doing an activity like this, point out that they should be wearing eye protection. Don’t be Canadian and apologize — you are
thinking about their safety. If you are an employer, it is your duty to ensure your people are safe. Wearing eye protection during sports is also a good idea. It is already recommended with young children. Kids wear full face gear in hockey and lacrosse. I have seen some softball batters with full face protection. There s a long list of sports where eye protection is a good idea. I always wear eyeglasses when mountain biking; more than once, an insect has bounced off my glasses. These good habits should be carried on into adulthood. If you work in an environment where eye injuries are possible, ensure that safety equipment is available. Naturally, the number one item is a properly fitting pair of safety glasses. Vision correction glasses might not be good enough; they are meant for fashion and might not be strong enough to protect your eyes. Also, make sure eye wash stations are available and are in working order. The stations should be easy to reach from where an eye injury might occur. Remember, if you do injure your eye, you might have to find the eye wash kit with your eyes closed. If you do get something in your eye, do not
rub your eye in order to try and remove it. This can lead to more damage, or even scratching of the cornea. Try to flush out the object or liquid with cool water or the eye wash kit. If there is an object stuck to the dark centre of the eye (pupil), try to flush it out with water. If this does not remove it, put on a pair of dark glasses and seek medical attention. If the debris is on the white part of the eye (sclera), you can have someone try and brush it way with a moist cotton swab or cloth. If this does not work, as above, seek medical attention. Do not put pressure on the eye and do not try to remove imbedded objects from the eye. Seek medical attention if these eye symptoms occur: pain in eye or eyelid; vision
loss or changes; visible wound, persistent discharge or blood; or if the eye or eyelid just don’t look right. You eyes are delicate and should be protected — you only get two. Injuries can happen in an instant whereas prevention take time and planning. This can be said about most things. So just wear your eye protection, and don’t get me started about the importance of sunglasses. heartpharmacy.com
Stopping cancer and other illnesses BY LOUIS HOOLAEFF, HR, HC, ACS
COULD THE CURE BE IN THE CAUSE?
I
t’s time to educate ourselves on real prevention and elimination of illness. The big ‘C’-word stops just about everyone in their tracks, and rightfully so — it’s the most feared disease. Researchers predict that onein-three people will develop cancer in their lifetime, and that number is expected to rise to one-in-two people. If you had a young child with chicken pox, would you take that child to the doctor and ask them to cut out all the pox in the child’s skin,
or burn them out, or poison them out? Of course not! You would know that the pox marks were a local manifestation of a systemic disease that affects the child’s whole body, and that when the child’s body gets well, the pox marks will go away. If a person has cancer or any other illness, that person is not sick because of the cancer. The cancer has manifested because the whole body is sick. The focus must be on getting the whole body well, not on getting rid of the tumor. When the body gets well, the tumor will go away, just like the pox marks in the skin of a child
with chicken pox will go away when that child’s body gets well. When the immune system is healthy and vibrant, cancer is kept in check. Cancer is caused by the way we eat and the way we live. This must be addressed to reverse it. Certain enzymes are proteins that ‘catalyze’ (increase the rate of) chemical reactions and target cancer cells without harming normal cells. It was discovered that salvestrols destroy cancer cells. Salvestrols are the natural defense system in fruit and vegetables against fungal attacks; that’s why they are only found in those species subject to

fungus damage. Cancer is itself a form of fungal attack, and that’s why salvestrols are effective against it. An overly acidic body system, where toxins cannot be eliminated and settle in the organs, can cause cancerous tumors. Cancer is not a disease — it is a survival mechanism. It is a warning for us to improve our diet and start to cleanse our body. A publication by Dr. Edward Howell, “Enzyme Nutrition” on enzymes and research by former M.D. Michael O’Brien, shows that enzymes are extremely beneficial to our health and are the system fighters. A plant-based, mostly raw diet
and supplements with ultra powerful plant enzymes and proteolytic probiotics is extremely important if we want to be free of illness and disease. As a health researcher and health consultant, I have researched numerous alternative methods. We need our medical system to diagnose and treat, and if we develop a medical condition, we should consult our medical provider. But we should keep ourselves in good health in the first place. We can live an illness-free life and regain our youth. Learn more at: LeadingEdgeHealth.org Phone: 250-220-1262.

hether you are a seasoned marathon runner or a novice triathlete, treating your body well is a major determinate of your performance. The following tips can help you train, perform and recover optimally.
4) Eat well: You don’t need fancy supplements — food is often the only medicine we need. If you are consistently having symptoms of poor performance and recovery despite your best efforts to eat well, have a naturopathic doctor work with your diet so they can make appropriate recommendations for you.
1) Get enough restorative sleep: Sleep is an essential for athletic recovery. DHEA, growth hormone and melatonin work together to achieve this. Deepest sleep needs balanced blood sugars. Eating a snack of carbs and protein such as apple and nut butter in the evening keeps sugars stable and optimizes melatonin production.
5) Start slow, set goals: Set realistic goals for performance — take it slow and steady. Helpful apps include Strava, Couch to 5K Runner and PEAR personal fitness coach. The apple watch and Fitbit are also easy devices that help you track your performance. With so many fun events coming up this spring, including the TC 10K this weekend, these easy habits will help you perform your best and feel great doing it. hydrateiv.ca
2) Eat breakfast: Breakfast determines your energy levels in the day. Some healthy options for breakfast include: egg, avocado on greens and whole grain toast; Greek yogurt, berries, chia and nuts; or steel cut oats, nuts, and protein powder with almond milk. 3) Stay hydrated: Being hydrated is essential for

he doors are open at the new Neuromotion Centre for Rehabilitation, located at 775 Topaz Ave. “It makes so much sense to have everything in one building for individuals needing assessment or treatment for a neurological condition. For a lot of patients, it is very stressful to make multiple trips all over town for appointments and consultations,” said senior physiotherapist Hillary Acosta. “We are especially proud that MOVE Adapted Fitness is in the same building, ready to help people who have gone through the more acute stages of recovery with our therapists and have graduated to their own personalized exercise program.” Hillary Acosta offers just one of five services in the new centre. With 19 years of experience in neuro-physiotherapy, her passion is helping people every day make progress towards their physical goals. Hanging out their shingle with Neuromotion Physiotherapy and MOVE are: JoAnn Klassen, Audiologist — offering on-site diagnostic hearing evaluations will be key for the understanding of an individual’s ‘full picture’, especially when it comes to treating neurological conditions such as vertigo and concussion. James Tarrant, Orthotist — has extensive experience prescribing, designing and custom fabricating all orthotic devices for children and adults with neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions. David Rosen and his team of occupational therapists — help people regain independence with their daily activities following injury or illness. Dr. Jacqueline Pierce, Physiatrist — is a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation, treating spasticity and pain management, migraine issues, improved patient mobility and function, orthopaedic issues and assessment for bracing and prosthetics. “The Centre offers personalized care. It will be easy for our team to sit down together to discuss a client’s progress and figure out the best way forward for them” said Acosta. neuromotionphysio.com
