VICTORIA'S 23RD ANNUAL SKA & REGGAE FESTIVAL

W

ith three years of energy stored up, Victoria's 23rd Annual Ska & Reggae Festival is finally ready to welcome the world back to the heart of our beautiful city as we gear up to once again celebrate the roots and worldwide influence of ska and reggae music. Featuring over 30 incredible, exciting acts from around the globe and right here in Canada, Victoria Ska & Reggae Fest is ready to reclaim its place as one of the most musically diverse, vibrant festivals in North America. Jamaican-rooted music has been a global force for generations – both in the fans that attend the shows and the artists who perform the music. More than ever, this years lineup reflects the cross-generational appeal and cross-genre influence of the music with acts like The Wailers, King Yellowman & K'reema, Jo Mersa Marley (Grandson of reggae icon Bob Marley), Too Many Zooz, Five Alarm Funk, Bedouin Soundclash, Katchafire – just to

name a few. As always at Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival, you can expect to hear some of your old favourites and discover some new favourites. Although music is the main thing that brings us together every year, our festival also features free workshops with key festival performers, incredible local art through the Rocksteady Multimedia Arts Collective, as well as culinary delights inspired by the cultural roots of festival performers. We are always striving to make our festival accessible to as many people as possible and our mission remains unchanged. With the lowest ticket prices you'll find at a major festival, almost all shows being all-ages and three nights of FREE programming on our signature main stage at Ship Point, Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival remains a Festival of the People. It's been too long and we can't wait to welcome back the world.

ossini’s own words, on his own score: “Dear God, here it is finished, this poor little mass. I was born for comic opera, as you well know! A little skill, a little heart, that’s all I have. Be merciful then, and admit me to Paradise.” Take the playful opera composer G.ROSSINI, 60 singers, 2 grand pianos and a harmonium, set them in the majestic space of a Cathedral and … what you get is an evening of exuberant music making! Peter Butterfield conducts the Victoria Philharmonic Choir in Gioacchino Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, a work whose title reflects the composer’s characteristic wit, as it’s the very opposite of small and solemn! Soloists are soprano Jennifer Turner, mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabo, tenor Benjamin Butterfield and bass Louis Dillon. Although the words are from the traditional Latin Mass, the Petite Messe was not written for a church service, but was commissioned by a Parisian countess for her private chapel, where it had its premiere in 1864. The VPC will perform the original version accompanied by two pianos and harmonium, which Rossini himself preferred to the larger, orchestral score he wrote to prevent anyone else doing it after his death. At the keyboards are well-known pianists Kinza Tyrell and Kimberley Bartczak, with organist Michael Molnar on the harmonium. The VPC presents the heavenly results of Rossini’s work on Saturday June 11, 2022 in Christ Church Cathedral, at 7.30 pm. FOR CONCERT DETAILS AND TICKETS (AVAILABLE IN MAY) PLEASE VISIT VPCHOIR.CA.

ADVENTURE IS CALLING AT CAMP QWANOES Scott Bayley Executive Director Camp Qwanoes

“C

amp is going to be more exciting than ever this summer!” according to Bayley. With Dr. Bonnie Henry removing COVID restrictions for overnight camps, they can’t wait to welcome children and youth to full capacity camps. “Now our goal is to make summer 2022 the best summer ever! It’s time to come back together for some amazing adventures, new friendships and all the wonder and discovery that is part of camp,” says Bayley. Whether they’re exploring a giant floating Aqua-Park, racing a friend down a spectacular ocean zip line called the Jet Stream to the beach, or skateboarding on a world-class concrete skate park,

there is something for everyone. Since 1966 kids have been experiencing these kind of adventures and a whole lot more at Qwanoes, nestled beside Maple Mountain on a quiet bay in Crofton about one hour north of Victoria. “Our staff can’t wait to welcome everyone back!” Speaking of the impact camp clearly has on kids, Bayley says, “What really makes a week at Qwanoes so special is that we love kids. Qwanoes is a safe place where kids are not only accepted but valued. Kids can just be kids here and enjoy an escape from our fastpaced, plugged-in world. Campers can gain not just new-found confidence, but also a new-found hope for their future.”
