Wine from all the best places

! h s u Cr E

France, Italy, Portugal & Scotland!

ach summer — staff, volunteers and board members from the Belfry Theatre raid some of Greater Victoria’s best wine cellars to find rare and unusual wines to auction off at Crush, the theatre’s fundraising wine event. Crush starts with wine and cider tastings. Guests can sample more than 50 wines from 42 vineyards and five cideries. The tastings are accompanied by Chef Craig Stoneman’s dazzling hors d’oeuvres to complement the fine wine and cider tastings. Sommelier Pamela Sanderson of Hire a Somm will guide guests through a fun and friendly, but competitive, blind tasting at her station. At 6 p.m., we will move to the auction room for the start of the live wine auction.

Part of the allure of Crush is the rareness of the wines on offer. Most are not available in liquor stores, and this is a unique opportunity to buy some truly collectable wines — at all price points — that have been held in private cellars, purchased abroad, or were released in very small batches that subsequently sold out. The star of this year’s live auction is an 1845 bottle of ‘Cossart Gordon Madeira Solera Bual’ from Portugal. The live auction will feature wine from France, Italy, Portugal, Australia, British Columbia, and two exceptionally rare offerings of single malt scotch whisky from Scotland. Sommelier and wine educator Earl Wilde will introduce each auction lot and auctioneer Roshan

Vickery will get the bidding started. Wine enthusiast Robert Moyes is preparing comprehensive wine notes for the event’s auction catalogue. His notes are updated frequently and are available at belfry.bc.ca/crush in advance of the event. An accompanying silent auction features wine gift baskets and packages, dining, travel and other unique experiences of interest to the wine lover in every price bracket. CRUSH TAKES PLACE AT THE DELTA OCEAN POINTE RESORT, 100 HARBOUR ROAD, VICTORIA, ON OCT. 21 AT 5 P.M. TICKETS $95 AVAILABLE AT: BELFRY.BC.CA/CRUSH OR 250-385-6815.

C

FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON.

oordinator Deanna Walters invites you to start your Christmas shopping. She is thrilled to announce new and returning exhibitors. Some of these exhibitors include: Sweet Life Canada will be selling handmade Floral Candles. The candle wax must reach the perfect consistency before the colour and fragrance are added to each flower. The flowers are arranged using leaves and flower buds making each floral candle a unique gift. The company Lost Things was started with a simple found coin. It was an old penny and the exhibitor wanted to create something unique. Lost Things has come a long way since then. Her jewelry is made from coins she has found or been gifted. Each piece is made with love and gratitude. Field & Vine Gift Co creates luxury gift boxes that feature local foods and specialties, each with its own theme for special occasions. Each gift box is lovingly assembled with the finest products sourced from the coastal farm and wine communities of B.C., with a focus on Vancouver Island. Rootside Provisions make delicious craft cocktail mixers with fresh, local and organic ingredients. Their current product line includes a ginger beer mix, tonic syrup, classic dry, cardamom and citrus. There will be more than crafts at this year’s fair. New to the fair is Zero Waste Emporium, Vancouver Island’s first Zero Waste grocery store. They have officially opened downtown on Douglas Street across from the Victoria Public Market.

They have everything you typically would find at a regular grocery store, but completely package free and available in bulk. They will have earth-friendly personal care products and zero waste items like bamboo toothbrushes, string bags, reusable straws and beeswax wraps just to name a few items. Popular food specialty exhibitors include Beaver House Fudge, Epicure Selections, Seafire Soups, Baba’s Bakery, Circle Canning, Bake My Day Gluten Free, Ace Curries To Go, Coconama Chocolate Co., Maples Sugar Shack, Salt Spring Artisan Vinegar, Queen Bee Farms & Apiary, Filan Farm Artisans, Korean Kick, Beanboy Creations, Rockin Risotto and Rockery Winery. Out of Hand OUT OF HAND — 30TH ANNIVERSARY

Modern Market

O

ut of Hand Modern Market celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and it’s bigger and better than ever with a curated selection of beautiful goods made by hand by 125 of Western Canada’s most accomplished and talented artists and makers. Buy directly from the creators of stunning jewellery, pottery, fashions, food, wine and spirits, décor and more. New market owner and producer, Bethany Wilson, is excited to present this year’s curated line-up of participants. “Artists and makers chosen for Out of Hand offer a wonderful diversity of outstanding handmade goods created locally and from across Western Canada. For some, it is the only time they will be offering their goods for sale in Victoria, giving local shoppers a very unique opportunity,” she says. “Exciting makers and designers from the Vancouver area for instance, including Adhesif Clothing and Red Pot Pottery, who rarely come to Victoria, choose to include Out of Hand among a small group of prestigious shows that they attend.” Adhesif Clothing, Red Pot and Flux & Stone are just three of the 125 creators you’ll find at Out of Hand Modern Market this November. Live music and an onsite bistro make for a wonderful holiday shopping experience. In recognition of Out of Hand’s 30th Anniversary, the first 30 people at the door each day will receive free admission. Out of Hand Modern Market takes place Friday, Nov. 23, through Sunday Nov. 25 at the Victoria Conference Centre, 720 Douglas St. in Victoria.
